NFL Draft Best Picks of All-Time From Every ACC School

Who are the ACC’s greatest NFL Draft picks of all-time? Here are the top three best picks from each ACC program.

Who are the best NFL Draft picks from every ACC program? Which players turned into the greatest stars at the next level?

The ACC takes a backseat to no one when it comes to NFL draft bragging rights from its current programs.

The bulk players might not be there like it is from the SEC and the Big Ten, but you want high-end talent?

From Dan Marino to Jim Brown, and from Lawrence Taylor to Derrick Brooks to Aaron Donald, there’s a lot for the ACC to chirp about.

This isn’t a list of the top pro players to come from the ACC schools – these are the best draft picks.

Players who had great careers for teams other than the ones that drafted them don’t get enough credit, or aren’t on the list at all.

The goal for any draft pick is to get a player who performs at a high level for a long period of time, so longevity matters over one short burst of greatness.

It’s going to be one of the craziest offseasons yet with the transfer portal, a whole lot of big transitions, and several key teams needing to do a whole lot of work.

Before diving into the nuts and bolts of each team with our team-by-team Preview 2022, here’s the spring version quick look, prediction, and ranking of each ACC team.

Don’t get into any sort of a twist with these ACC rankings – you could take about ten of the teams, mix them up in any order, and you’ll probably be right.

Seriously, if you want to swap 11 and 12 on this with, say, 4 and 5, go for it – that’s how even this league should be. If you thought last year was weird in the conference, just wait.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Boston College vs Wake Forest Game Preview, ACC Tournament

Why Boston College Will Win

The Eagles went on a big run to put away Pitt without a problem in the 66-46 in over Tuesday. They were great defensively, they hit 47% from three, and they put together one of their better performances in a few weeks.

Even though the losses lately, the shooting ability has been there, moving the ball around isn’t a problem, and there aren’t enough mistakes to allow for too many easy points.

Wake Forest isn’t big on the offensive glass and it turns the ball over way too much, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Here come the threes.

Wake Forest isn’t Pitt when it comes to hitting the outside shots, leading the ACC in attempted threes and hitting about nine per game. Boston College did a nice job in its last game to get here, but it’s the worst team in the ACC at defending the outside shot.

These two only met once this year and it wasn’t pretty. The Demon Deacons rolled 87-57 by hitting 54% from the field and keeping Boston College from doing anything offensively.

As long as the Eagles can’t get on the move, expect more of the same.

Wake Forest vs Boston College: What’s Going To Happen

Boston College is playing with house money, and here comes the defensive pressure.

Again, the Eagles are shooting well lately. They’ll have to trade twos for threes, but Wake Forest isn’t above going cold from the outside for stretches. There are problems when the three isn’t going down, and it’s going to take a while to get the outside shooting going.

The threes will come through in the second half and Boston College won’t have any answers.

Wake Forest vs Duke Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Wake Forest can’t quite get over the hump.

It’s been hovering around the top 25 with a recent appearance, and there’s not much of an NCAA Tournament concern, but it has too many hiccups. It’s been solid, though, against some of the ACC’s stronger teams.

It got rocked by Duke 76-64 back in mid-January, but that’s partly because it had one of its worst three-point shooting days of the season. Granted, that’s what Duke does defensively, but Wake Forest is far more prolific from three than it showed.

It’s been hitting everything else from the field – it leads the ACC in field goal percentage – and it should move the ball around well enough to get around that Duke D on the perimeter, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Duke Will Win

Again, the Duke defense is just that good.

Wake Forest doesn’t have to hit from three to win, but going inside on the Blue Devils is a problem and it’s been hard for most teams to do much of anything from three.

Duke has allowed teams to hit 40% or more from three just once since Thanksgiving.

Wake Forest doesn’t do enough on the offensive glass, and for all of assists and ball movement there are way too many turnovers – way too many – but …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Again, the shooting.

Duke is incredible from the field, but Wake Forest has the ability to keep the pressure on with a whole lot of points coming in a whole lot of ways. The first performance against Duke was one of the team’s worst scoring days of the year – it’s going to push this into the 70s.

Duke will rise back up at home after losing to Virginia the last time out in Cameron Indoor, but it’s going to be in for a fun fight.

2022 College Football Schedules: All 130 Teams

Wake Forest Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Demon Deacons miss from the Coastal Division?

It’s not a bad deal. The Demon Deacons get Duke as its Coastal road game – and it’s at the end of the regular season – and North Carolina is a home date. There’s no complaining about missing Miami, Pitt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech.

In the Atlantic Division, the Clemson game is at home to kick off ACC play, but going to Florida State and NC State will be a problem.

Wake Forest Football Schedule What To Know: It’s spread out, and that’s not bad

Unlike some teams – Syracuse, for one – who have a major imbalance of home and road game timing, Wake Forest only has five road games, and there isn’t any run of three in four weeks.

Three of the last five games are on the road, but there’s only one game outside of North Carolina – at Louisville – after October 1st.

Wake Forest Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not a bad slate, but there can’t be any misfires in the winnable games against Vanderbilt, Liberty, and Army. Win those three non-conference games and it should be a good start to the season before dealing with the bulk of the road games over the finishing kick.

It might take a few breaks like Florida State, North Carolina, and Louisville to struggle to have another big season, but there are more than enough winnable games to be a factor again.

Rutgers vs Wake Forest TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Preview

Well look at what we’ve got here. It’s an interesting curveball that might make this one of the more fascinating bowls of the late part of the season.

Texas A&M couldn’t go because of COVID issues, so in comes a Rutgers team that had the highest APR – Academic Progress Rate; the first criteria among programs that didn’t get to six wins – among 5-7 teams.

There’s a plus side to that. Even a healthy Texas A&M would’ve been missing a slew of key parts. It just means more to Rutgers.

Which style can take over the game early on? Wake Forest wants to go fast, keep the Scarlet Knight defense on its heels, and strike in a hurry with its exiting offense that can score points in bunches. Rutgers wants to grind this down to a dead stop.

– There’s no sugar-coating this – Rutgers can’t and doesn’t score. There’s a chance Wake Forest turns the lights on on this game in a hurry with a whole slew of early points, but the Scarlet Knight defense has been able to crank up the defense at times with a whole slew of takeaways.

The best Rutgers win was against … Illinois? The team didn’t have a win over anyone that went to a bowl game and failed to score more than 16 points in any of its seven losses.

Wake Forest had a magnificent run with an ACC Championship appearance. The loss to Pitt obviously wasn’t a plus, but it was great moment for the program just to get there. Win this, and a great season becomes something special. Lose, and it becomes the team that lost to the 5-7 fill-in.

It’s all about the bowl games coming up next – those require an entirely different skillset – but first, we close out with college football’s Championship Week.

There are just 11 games – normally there are 70+ games to pick and choose from – but you don’t care. You just want the magic to happen.

So let’s do this. Be bold. Be brave. Be …

Eh, whatever. I promised five picks, here’s seven, but with a twist.

5. Kent State vs Northern Illinois & Pitt vs Wake Forest point totals

LINE Kent State vs Northern Illinois 74.5, Pitt vs Wake Forest 71.5
Point Total Picks Over

I’m combining these two games together for one simple reason – it goes against everything I believe in.

If you’ve been with this piece all year, hopefully you did alright with the belief system of ALWAYS taking the under on a mid-70s point total, and go crazy if it’s in the high-70s or – if we’ve been good people who deserve something nice – in the 80s.

Too many things have to happen to get to over on a 70+. Bad weather, turnovers, a parachute not opening, it could be anything to keep two offenses from trading haymakers.

That’s why I’ll throw in a polite suggestion of under on the 73 in the Conference USA Championship between UTSA and WKU. Yeah, yeah, yeah they combined for 98 in the first meeting, but that Roadrunner defense will show up just enough to keep Bailey Zappe and friends from going off.

I won’t lie, the MAC Championship scares me because MAC Championships are weird.

They almost NEVER go according to any form or reason, one side always wets the bed and turns it over a gajillion times, and … this should be wild.

Kent State just doesn’t do defense against decent offenses. Forget that these two combined for 99 points in the first meeting, it’s indoors, the Golden Flash offense is going to be even quicker, and one of the two sides should take care of at least 50 of this by itself.

And the ACC Championship? Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman and Pitt’s Kenny Pickett are about to put on a show.

Both defenses are coming off of oddly dominant performances, and Pitt hasn’t allowed more than 30 points in seven of its last nine games, but …

There’s no pressure. There’s no playoff spot on the line. These two are about to let it rip.

I’m doing the combined-pick thing again next, and then come the big calls …

ACC Championship: Pitt vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

The pass rush.

It gets overlooked with QB Kenny Pickett and the high-flying offensive fun show taking up most of the spotlight – and rightly so – but Pitt has just enough of a defense to be a problem for the Wake Forest attack.

In this – what’s sure to be a wild and crazy offensive show – merely holding serve might be enough.

The Panthers have gone back-and-forth with Oklahoma State throughout the late part of the season for the nation’s top spot in sacks, and they’re phenomenal at generating tackles for loss. Again, just coming up with one big sack might just be enough.

And then there’s the other big part of the Pitt puzzle – control.

Pickett and company might throw the ball a ton and put up a bazillion yards of total offense – fourth in the nation averaging 512 per game – but this is also an attack that owns the clock and is more measured than warp-speed.

Pitt leads the ACC in time of possession, and Wake Forest really, really doesn’t. The Panthers will have the ball for around ten minutes more, but …

College Football Expert Picks, Championship Week

Why Wake Forest Will Win

You don’t need to control the clock and the tempo when you’re scoring 43 points per game with blinding speed.

The idea is to keep defenses on their heels and make them live in a constant backpedal.

Spread everyone out, let QB Sam Hartman – who only seems like he’s been there long enough to have been Tim Duncan’s recruiting chaperone – make the right read, and the brilliant Demon Deacon receivers will take it from there.

No, Wake Forest might not own the clock, but it controls games in a different way. There aren’t enough penalties to matter and there aren’t any turnovers – the team leads the ACC in turnover margin.

And yeah, no one’s going to confuse the Wake Forest defense for Georgia’s, but this group does get into the backfield to generate pressure and it’s phenomenal at taking the ball away.

The offense makes the other side press and take chances to keep up. That’s when the interceptions happen. However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

What’s Going To Happen

Look, we all know you’re going to be watching the Big Ten Championship that’s going on at the same time. It’s Michigan, it’s for the College Football Playoff – it’s okay.

This game will be better.

The MAC Championship between Kent State and Northern Illinois will push this for the day’s most entertaining offensive fun-show, but it’ll be a back-and-forth fight full of big pass plays and lots of momentum swings.

Demand close to 800 passing yards between these two terrific quarterbacks, no safe leads, and expect the Pitt defense to close this out late with a few big plays in the backfield.

Wake Forest vs Boston College Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Demon Deacons might have lost two of their last three games, the defense that was never that great has been a disaster, and …

Win, go play for the ACC Championship. It’s that simple.

No. this D isn’t exactly Georgia’s or Wisconsin’s, but the offense keeps on putting up massive numbers averaging 490 yards and 43 points per game, and there’s no way Boston College can keep up if this gets rolling.

The Eagle defense doesn’t generate enough pressure to bother veteran QB Sam Hartman, the Demon Deacon defensive front is good enough to get into the backfield, and for the most part this season, turnovers haven’t been an issue.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Boston College Will Win

Wake Forest has to put a stop to the mistakes immediately.

It turned the ball over just seven times in the first eight games, but it gave it away eight times in the last three. Boston College isn’t a takeaway machine, but it’s able to force bad things to happen every once in a while.

This has to be when the Eagle offense opens it up full throttle.

On the plus side, the running game has been solid over the last few games after a rough midseason stretch. However, the passing game has been too inconsistent with just one game with over 200 yards in the last six.

Having QB Phil Jurkovec back has helped, and he needs to take advantage of the horrible Wake Forest defense that gives up way too many big plays. The secondary is bad, the run D is worse, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Wake Forest is going to bomb its way into the ACC Championship.

It won’t do anything easy – the defense is just that awful, allowing 42 points or more in four of the last five games – but Boston College hasn’t faced any sort of a passing game like this.

It missed Sam Howell and North Carolina, it missed Devin Leary and it missed Brennan Armstrong and Virginia.

It didn’t lose NC State’s Devin Leary, and it lost 33-7.  It doesn’t miss Sam Hartman.
