Northwestern vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

Who’s the hottest thing going in college basketball right now?

Okay, there might be others on better winning streaks, but Northwestern went  from being an easy out with a 12-6 record to a possible 5 seed – or higher – after going 8-1 in the last nine games.

Having a slew of home games has helped, but it’s afar more than that. The defense has been amazing at stopping teams from three, there aren’t a ton of turnovers, and the D is forcing a ton of mistakes. All of that, and it’s living on the defensive boards – there aren’t a lot of second chance points allowed.

But …

Why Illinois Will Win

It’s not like Northwestern can shoot.

It wins games ugly. It can score – it put up 80 on Iowa’s bad defense when everything was dropping – but it’s the worst shooting team in the Big Ten connecting on 1st 41% of its chances.

It doesn’t do enough from three, it’s just okay on the move, and it has to win games by forcing mistakes and playing great D.

Northwestern is 12-1 when hitting 43% or better from the field,  Illinois allows teams to make 41% of their shots. That, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Illini might be struggling just when they need to kick it all in, but the problems have mostly been on the road. They’ve won their last four at home and are 13-2 overall in Champaign.

Northwestern is playing with extreme confidence and the defense is terrific enough to make the Illini go cold for long stretches. Illinois will still find a way to come through by doing a strong job on the offensive boards.

Illinois at Indiana Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

The Illini are scuffling a bit, but they’re still doing a nice job from the field, the inside presence is solid, and they crank up enough threes to matter.

They’re not hitting those outside shots, but they do enough to draw out the defense to crank up the production inside. On the flip side, Indiana is stingy with its three – it makes them when it takes them, but it doesn’t take a lot of them – and the defense doesn’t come up with a ton of mistakes.

For a turnover-prone team like Illinois, it’s catching a bit of a break. In general it has been okay when it’s giving the ball away, but it can’t do that here.

However …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Indiana Will Win

The Illinois defense appears to be taking a bit of a break, at least on the road.

It couldn’t stop anything Penn State wanted to do, and it couldn’t get the one big defensive play to slow down Iowa in the 81-79 loss.

Indiana might have lost to Northwestern, but let’s just say the officiating in that was … interesting. The team has been a killer at home – another lost to Northwestern was the lone defeat so far in Bloomington – and there weren’t any problems with the Illini in Champaign a month ago.

The shooting has been great, the offense is doing a solid job of moving it around, and as long as it’s okay on the boards there shouldn’t be a problem.

And …

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana just needs to get to 70 points.

Illinois is 15-0 when holding teams to under 70 and 2-8 when allowing that many or more. Indiana has been held to under 70 just ten times, and just three of those were at home – two were to Wisconsin and Rutgers.

Indiana will get to 70 in a close battle before pulling away late on the free throw line.

ReliaQuest Bowl What Happened

– Massimo Biscardi hit a 27-yard field goal with four seconds to play to give Mississippi State the 13-10 lead, and Marcus Banks added on to the final score with a scoop and score for a 60-yard touchdown after a desperation final bunch of laterals by the Illini to close out a hard-fought, tough game.

Illinois got up 10-7 at going into halftime helped by a two-yard Tommy DeVito touchdown run and a 52-yard bomb of a field goal from Caleb Griffin, but that was it for the scoring.

– Mississippi State got a – let’s just say, very, very questionable – touchdown from Justin Robinson on fourth and goal from the eight to help tie it up. His foot appeared to be out, but it was called a touchdown and wasn’t reversed. That started a fourth quarter run of 16 unanswered points.

ReliaQuest Bowl Fun Stats

– Illinois was without star RB Chase Brown. It ran 29 times for 35 yards and a score – the O line allowed seven sacks and ten tackles for loss.

– Will Rogers completed 29-of-44 passes for 261 yards and a score with two picks for Mississippi State. Illinois QB Tommy DeVito completed 23-of-34 passes for 253 yards and ran for a score.

– Mississippi State outgained Illinois 390 yards to 288

ReliaQuest Bowl What It All Means

This was the first game for Mississippi State since the death of head coach Mike Leach, and it won with defense and not a high-octane offense. The Illinois defense had a lot to do with that, but the running game cranked out over five yards per carry and QB Will Rogers came up with an okay game to go along with two picks.

This closes out the season with three straight wins – including a victory over Ole Miss – and was the first win for new head coach Zach Arnett. Under Leach and former head man Joe Moorhead, Mississippi State was 1-3 in its previous four bowls before this.

Illinois was missing a few key guys in the secondary along with RB Chase Brown, and it came within a bad call for a Bulldog touchdown from possibly pulling this off. However, this showed the need for more of a downfield passing game – WR Isaiah Williams did what he could with a slew of yards after the catch, finishing with 114 yards – but there wasn’t any running game and the O line couldn’t keep Tommy DeVito from getting hit.

Even with the loss, this was a terrific second season under head coach Bret Bielema, coming up with the program’s first winning season since 2011, establishing a tough defensive style and attitude going forward.

The Illini haven’t won a bowl game since 2011 going 0-3 since.

Illinois vs Mississippi State ReliaQuest Bowl 5 Things To Know

ReliaQuest Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

It’s the first game of 2023, and it’s the first game for Mississippi State without the late head coach Mike Leach. Overall this was a solid season under Leach with wins in three of the last four games – including a win over arch-rival Ole Miss – on the way to a good 2023 bowl game, but of course the season and this game will be remembered for Leach.

Nothing is going to immediately change under new head coach Zach Arnett. The Bulldogs are still going to throw the ball a bajillion times, the defense is going to be solid, and the team should be able to handle the Illinois style.

Illinois was one of the 2022 season’s best surprises. Under head coach Bret Bielema, the offense was tough up front, the defense was among the best in the country, and it all worked well enough to destroy Wisconsin – and end the Paul Chryst era – beat Iowa, and push Michigan to the brink. It was a rough finishing kick with losses to Michigan State and Purdue keeping it out of Big Ten Championship, but this season was just the beginning of a strong new era of Illinois football.

Here’s the problem. It’s missing some of its key stars. Chase Brown was as good as any running back in the country, Luke Ford was a terrific tight end, and the opt-out losses in the secondary against this passing team is devastating.

– This is the first bowl game for Illinois since losing the 2019 Redbox to Cal. The last bowl win was against UCLA in the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger, and the program is a rough 2-4 in bowls since 1999’s blowout win over Virginia in the Micron PC. Bielema has been decent in bowls – he went 2-1 at Arkansas – but he was just 2-4 at Wisconsin with two straight Rose Bowl losses before leaving for the Hog gig.

Mississippi State was terrific in bowls games for a long stretch – going 9-2 in 11 bowls from the 1999 Peach up to the end of the Dan Mullen era with a win over Louisville in the 2017 TaxSlayer. Under Joe Moorhead and Mike Leach, the Bulldogs went 1-3, getting rocked by Texas Tech 34-7 last year in the Liberty.

It’s the inaugural ReliaQuest Bowl, but you probably know it better as the old Outback Bowl. It’s been SEC vs Big Ten after Wisconsin beat Duke in 1995 with the SEC going 16-10 and winning the last two. Last year’s 24-10 Arkansas win over Penn State was better than the final score, and the previous five were all decided by one score.

CFN Experts Picks: Jan 2 Bowls

Why Illinois Will Win The ReliaQuest Bowl

The defense really is that good.

It might be missing a few very, very important defensive backs – more on that in a moment – but the style and the D should still work. The Illini finished second in the nation in total defense behind Air Force, it was first in scoring defense allowing just 12.2 points per game, and most importantly in this, it’s No. 1 in the nation in passing efficiency defense.

The defense allowed fewer than 2,000 yards this season and just eight touchdowns, and it picked off 22 passes. No, the team didn’t face a slew of high-powered passing teams, but the losses mostly came against teams that could throw.

There’s one massive difference between what Indiana, Michigan State, and Purdue did in their three wins and what Mississippi State does – downfield passes.

The Bulldogs will throw it 50 times, but there’s no rushing yards, and there’s nothing happening when it comes to the deep shots. The passing game averages under ten yards per completion – the third-lowest in college football – meaning the Illini will allow short passes, and then have to make the tackle. They can do that.

However …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Mississippi State Will Win The ReliaQuest Bowl

CB Devon Witherspoon and S Sydney Brown. Those are two NFL starting defensive backs Illinois won’t have around, and it’s going to matter.

The Illini defense will hold its own. Mississippi State will have a hard time moving the chains, it’ll have to deal with a ton of third down moments, and Illinois is as good as anyone in the country at coming up with third down stops. But the new parts in the Illinois secondary will hurt just enough to allow Will Rogers and company to keep things moving.

Yes, Illinois, Michigan State, and Purdue were able to stretch the field a bit, but none of them were Tennessee when it came to winging it around. Illinois lost four games this year, going 0-3 when giving up 208 yards or more, and the fourth loss came to Michigan State, who completed 66% of its passes – the best completion day by anyone against Illinois.

Mississippi State was below 208 passing yards just once – it threw for 203 against Kentucky – and was only below 60% three times. It’s 8-1 when it hits 60% or more of its throws.

There’s that, and …

Why Illinois Will Win

Northwestern hasn’t been able to figure out that whole scoring thing as the season has gone on.

The offense will move the ball a bit, but turnovers are a massive problem – two or more in eight games and six in the last two – and it’s having an impossible time putting the biscuit in the basket.

Northwestern lost to Maryland 31-24. That was the only time in the last eight games it scores more than 14 points, and now it’s going against the No. 2 defense in college football that allows 259 points and 13 points per game.

As long as the Illini can get up fast and don’t royally screw up, it should have this, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Northwestern Will Win

Can Northwestern throw a bit?

It couldn’t do it against Ohio State or Purdue, but the defense was able to keep the score in check – the weather conditions had everything to do with that against the Buckeyes – but the passing game has occasionally been okay enough to be at least accurate.

That’s how you bother the Illinois defense – you have to throw against it. Michigan State, Purdue, and Michigan were all able to run in their wins against Illinois, but that was set up by being decent enough through the air to be a bother.

The Wildcats have to mix up the offense a little bit and the run defense has go one up with a special day.

There’s no shot without holding the Illini to under 160 rushing yards, but …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

There won’t be enough from the the Northwestern offense, and there won’t be enough big plays from the defensive side to make up for it.

Illinois might have lost its last three games, but it doesn’t turn the ball over – just three in the last five games.

It won’t be anything pretty, but Illinois will take its second win in a row over Chicago’s Hometown Team.

Why Illinois Will Win

Can Michigan throw?

JJ McCarthy was fantastic after taking over the starting quarterback gig, but the passing attack has chilled a bit over the last three weeks. It’s hard to argue with five touchdown passes and no interceptions in easy wins over Michigan State, Rutgers, and Nebraska, but the accuracy wasn’t there – that matters.

What went wrong for Illinois in the losses to Michigan State and Purdue? Michigan State and Purdue could throw a bit, and they did – the Spartans hit 66% of their throws and the Boilermakers threw for 237 yards and three scores.

That’s how you beat Illinois – you throw. Michigan wins by running.

The playbook is simple. Get through the first half, wear teams down, and let the ground game take over. That has worked game after game after game, but Michigan isn’t going to be able to do that against an Illinois defense that allowed 100 rushing yards just twice in wins over Minnesota and Wyoming.

So …

Bowl Projections

Why Michigan Will Win

Again, can Michigan throw?

More accurately, can Michigan be … accurate?

The Wolverines failed to connect on more than 57% of their passes just twice – again, the layups against Nebraska and Rutgers – and Illinois is 0-3 when allowing teams to hit more than 53% of their throws.

Yes, that means Illinois is 7-0 when holding passing games down, but that’s a tad bit misleading. The Illini didn’t exactly go against Bryce Young or Hendon Hooker in those seven wins.

Michigan might just be that strong to overcome the Illini defensive front.

Penn State has a D, and Michigan ran for over 400 yards against it. Iowa was able to hold up well, and Indiana didn’t do a poor job, but in those two games McCarthy was too busy throwing well.

No one has been able to keep Michigan under four yards per carry, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Poor old Illinois. That was a cute run and all, but now it’s over, it’s basketball season, and everything is back in its rightful place.

Be very, very, very careful here.

The world is already looking ahead to Michigan going to Ohio State for a showdown of 11-0 unbeaten teams to see who – for all intents and purposes – will win the Big Ten title and be off to the College Football Playoff.

This game is absolutely perfect for Illinois – at least in theory.

The defense should be able to hold up, the offense that’s sixth in the nation in time of possession will take the air out of the ball, and the No. 1 team in college football in pass efficiency defense will be all over the Wolverine receivers.

The Michigan defense will rise up when it absolutely has to – especially with Illinois star RB Chase Brown banged up – but there will be a whole lot of sweating for late November.
