It might be the most underappreciated great sports day on the calendar – the Friday after Thanksgiving.

It’s not the big Saturday full of the biggest rivalry games, but it’s always a deep and interesting slate.

Warning, I’m in a punch-drunk state after consuming more calories in one day than I have over the entire season. The annual College Football 15 weight gain just kicked in over the last 45 minutes. If these picks are wrong, it’s because my too-fat fingers hit the wrong keys.

I’m also going to warn you that I’m not head over heels in love with these picks. I’m in deep like, but I’m not quite sure where this relationship is going, and there’s a reason.

Friday-after-Thanksgiving games are extremely weird and don’t often hold to form. I’ll get into that as we go.

I’ll do the regular 10 Best Predictions Against The Spread piece for all of the giant Saturday showdowns – that will come later on Friday. But for the giant Friday slate, here are the 5 Best Predictions for today.

Click on each game for the preview

5. Colorado at Utah

LINE Utah -23.5
ATS PICK Colorado

When I say Friday-after-Thanksgiving games are weird, I primarily mean something like this.

Utah doesn’t need this- it already has the Pac-12 South won and is off to the conference title game next week. It would actually be a good thing if it just sat its starters to rest up for whatever comes from the Pac-12 North on Saturday, and it’s not going to show off anything quirky that anyone can use.

Oh, I think Utah will win – it’s Senior Day, and of course a Kyle Whittingham team will always try – but the one thing this team can’t do is get banged up or bruised with the Pac-12 Championship and Rose Bowl appearance there for the taking.

Meanwhile, Colorado is still battling.

It beat Washington last week, it wasn’t bad at UCLA until the game got a bit out of control, and the win over Oregon State was a game-changer for the conference.

If Utah needed this game in any way it would ramp up the intensity and take this by the 23.5, but that’s not the case.

Call this a guess that the Utes will be more business-like and win this comfortably – like the 38-29 win over Arizona two weeks ago, with a letdown coming late – and won’t have half of the intensity it showed against Oregon six days ago.

By the way, call this a test-case theory for Pitt at Syracuse on Saturday. Pitt doesn’t need the win with the ACC Championship coming up, Syracuse at home has to win to go bowling,

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Illinois vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

The Northwestern offense has a whole lot of problems, but that’s okay – Illinois doesn’t really score.

The Illini got 23 in the loss to Iowa last week, and that was a stretch. This is a grinding team that wants to keep the score around 17-14, and that fits the Wildcats just fine.

Northwestern will be slow and go, and as long as it can stay conservative and not force anything with the passing game, this will be close in the fourth quarter. The game will never get away from the offense.

But, really …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Illinois Will Win

Northwestern just doesn’t score. At all.

It hasn’t pushed past 14 points in any of the last five games and isn’t going to get into the 20s unless something crazy happens.

Illinois isn’t going to do anything wacky, mainly because it’s not able to. Run, run, and run some more on a Wildcat defensive front that allowed 260 yards or more in three of four games before getting a Purdue team that threw for a bazillion yards.

Keep it conservative, own the ground game, win the turnover battle. Illinois can do that, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

There’s still a distant outside chance that Illinois can go bowling at 5-7 if a whole lot of bowl slots are open and the games need someone based on the Academic Progress Rate. For now, just beating Northwestern would be a big deal for the program.

Don’t expect any fireworks. The game will go by in a snap as both teams keep the clock moving, but Illinois will be +2 in turnover margin and get just a little more going with its ground game.

No goofing around

No gimmicks – the Kansas train finally came to a crashing halt, and in spectacular fashion. However, that was an overall plus to save my bacon after an offseason lobbying effort to get everyone to go over on the KU season win total of 1 or 1.5.

No obscure Group of Five on Group of Five action – because, to be honest, I couldn’t find anything.

No, it’s time to gear up and get in shape for what’s coming with the monster Thanksgiving Week around the corner – I’ll do this Wednesday before the Thursday and Friday games and then another version Friday night – leading into the conference championships leading into the bowl games.

But first, a bonus pick because I can’t resist, and because I’m not messing with a streak after falling into last week’s calls of Utah State outright over San Jose State (48-17 Aggies) and Nevada covering the 3 against San Diego State (SDSU 23-21).

It’s arguably the biggest game of the weekend, and I’m not going with it because I’m compromised.

For nine months I picked Utah to beat Oregon outright, and now 1) I hate Utah giving away points, 2) the pick fits my narrative, and that’s not a good thing – forgive the nauseating pretentiousness; I just chugged a latte at 2 am – and 3) I was yelled at by Oregon people that it’s not going to be as obvious as Oregon loses to Utah, Oregon beats Oregon State, Oregon beats Utah for Pac-12 Championship and goes on to beat random-good Big Ten team in the Rose Bowl.

Whatever. Of course that’s what’s going to happen. Utah -3. (BTW, biggest badass game preview photo ever for that.)

10 biggest college football games, 10 biggest college football picks. Here we go, starting with …

Click on each game for the preview

10. Virginia at Pitt

LINE Pitt -14.5
ATS PICK Virginia

Forgive me for doing this for a second week in a row.

Last week I loved the over in Virginia-Notre Dame, but that was based on Cavalier QB Brennan Armstrong playing. As it turned out, he couldn’t go with his injured rib and the team was a disaster in the 28-3 Irish win that didn’t come within ten miles of the total.

I might change this on the fly if news comes out about Armstrong one way or another, but at the moment the line is based on him not playing.

If he plays – and I’m guessing he tries everything to get out there with the Coastal Division still up for grabs – the line might plummet fast and the 14.5 should be a gift. However, that doesn’t quite jibe with the point total of 66.5.

If he’s not playing, UNDER if you can still get the 66.5. If he is playing, stay away from the total.

CFN Week 12 Experts Picks: College

9. SMU at Cincinnati

LINE Cincinnati -11
ATS PICK Cincinnati

I know this goes completely against my unwavering belief that Cincinnati not obliterating everyone with this schedule of meh is a disqualifier for the College Football Playoff, but I don’t believe in SMU at all.

No, Cincinnati hasn’t been as good as it should’ve been against awful teams, but yeah, Navy is quirky, and yeah, Tulsa is tough – and loses after bringing a decent fight – and the team did pull away from Tulane and USF.

SMU has been good enough over the last few years to get to the big stage, and then lose. Last year it was the 42-13 loss to Cincinnati. In 2019 it was the 54-48 loss to Memphis, and in 2018 – granted, that team was just okay – it was a 48-20 loss to UCF.

Cincinnati QB Desmond Ridder is playing better lately than he’s getting credit for, the lack of a consistent running game shouldn’t matter in this, and …

If this 2021 Bearcat ride ends, I think it happens either at East Carolina next week or against Houston in the AAC Championship.

CFN Week 11 Experts Picks: NFL

8. Oklahoma State at Texas Tech

LINE Oklahoma State -10.5
ATS PICK Oklahoma State

Interim head man Sonny Cumbie is coaching up this Texas Tech team through a tough situation. It fought well in a loss to Kansas State, got picked apart by Oklahoma, and then pulled off a Big 12 game-changer with a win over Iowa State. However …

Oklahoma State is fabulous.

This defense is incredible – it has yet to allow more than 24 points and gave up just 23 total in the last three games – the offense is finding its stride, and for all of his Mike Gundyness, Mike Gundy is really, really good at this and has his team peaking at the right time.

Texas Tech freshman QB Donovan Smith looks like a superstar to build around after ripping up Iowa State. However, Iowa State doesn’t get into the backfield like Oklahoma State does.

Donovan, meet the No. 1 pass rush and No. 3 defense in college football.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Illinois vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

Iowa might have changed around its quarterback situation, and the passing game improved, but it’s not like the offense is about to crank up 500 yards and 45 points.

The Hawkeyes need takeaways to win. The offense continues to be the worst in the Big Ten – averaging fewer than 300 yards per game – as it relies on the defense to hold up and keep things close.

Illinois doesn’t turn the ball over. It leads the Big Ten and is among the best in the nation in turnovers, giving away just eight so far. The team has a way of keeping games low scoring, it controls the tempo, and it’s playing a team that fits its style perfectly.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Iowa Will Win

Head coach Bret Bielema is out in the COVID protocol, but even if he was on the sidelines there would be a big issue.

Illinois has to run well to win, and it’s not going to run well in this.

Wisconsin is crushing everyone lately with its ground attack – it ran for 166 yards against the Hawkeyes. The run D had its worst game of the season in last week’s win over Minnesota – it gave up 189 yards.

Illinois rancor over 300 yards in the wins over Charlotte and Penn State, and ran for 185 yards in the victory over Minnesota – the team’s three top rushing performances of the year.

Iowa gives up just over 100 rushing yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s an interesting situation for both teams.

Iowa is still in the Big Ten title chase, but it has to win this week, take out Nebraska, and hope for Wisconsin to biff at some point.

Illinois can get bowl eligible if it wins this week and beats Northwestern to close. OR, it can get there by winning one of the last two games and hoping for there not enough teams to be bowl eligible – Illinois would be near the top of the list of 5-7 teams with a great Graduation Success Rate, but that’s for another day.

Alex Padilla has added some semblance of a passing game for Iowa, the run defense will hold up, and 9-2 is 9-2 – don’t worry about how the sausage is made.

Illinois vs Minnesota Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

The Illini defense is playing well.

Wisconsin was able to rumble at will, and Rutgers ran for 230 yards, but overall, Illinois is able to keep scores low and games close with its style. It hasn’t allowed more than 24 points since the loss to Virginia six games ago and in Big Ten play.

Minnesota’s running back situation is sadly ridiculous with injuries. The offensive line is great, the ground game is working no matter what, but the team is scrambling for any backs who can handle the job now.

This isn’t a Minnesota team that’s going to throw 50 on the board. Keep it close, grind it out, how to get the right turnovers at the right times – Illinois can do that.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Minnesota Will Win

If the Minnesota running game works, forget it.

Yeah, the Gopher running back depth chart has ben decimated, but the blocking is there, the style doesn’t change, and freshman Mar’Keise Irving has been the Next Back Up with 225 yards and three touchdowns over the last two weeks.

Even with the injury issues, the Gophers are getting better and better on the ground, hammering Maryland for 326 yards and Northwestern for 308.

Illinois is 0-3 when giving up over 200 rushing yards, but it’s going to come down to …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers. Illinois has to have them.

It hasn’t come away with one in either of the past two weeks – which was crazy that it beat Penn State despite being -3 in turnover margin – but it forced two in five straight games before that.

Minnesota lost to Bowling Green because of three giveaways – and because it  just never got off the bus – but it doesn’t have a big turnover issue.

This will get mucky, and there won’t be anything aesthetically pleasing about this, but the Gophers will run through the Illinois D just enough to control the game and hold on late.
