Sports community rallies around Mikaela Shiffrin after she skis out for 2nd time in 3 days at Olympics

The sports world is sending its best to Mikaela Shiffrin.

Mikaela Shiffrin has shockingly skied out of her second event at the Beijing Olympics, the women’s slalom.

On Wednesday morning in Beijing, Shiffrin had just started her slalom run when she was disqualified after missing a gate merely five seconds in. On Monday, Shiffrin was disqualified from her giant slalom run after she wiped out at the top of the course. Shiffrin was favored in both events, as she was the reigning gold medalist in the giant slalom from 2018.

Both disqualifications are unusual from Shiffrin, who has been known as a pretty mistake-free skier in her career. These Olympics are the first that Shiffrin is without her late father, a loss that she has stated is still pretty “painful” nearly two years later.

Shiffrin will be participating in three more events in the Beijing Olympics — women’s downhill and the two women’s combined events — and will still have the chance to claim a fourth Olympic medal (or more) in her career.

The sports world has since rallied around Shiffrin, who sat devastated at the side of the course after her disqualification. Sports fans also were left fuming with NBC’s coverage of Shiffrin’s disqualification, as the broadcast spent minutes lingering on shots of her sitting on the course in disbelief.

Chinese skiier Eileen Gu landed this bonkers 1620 in women’s freestyle big air to secure gold

HOW?

Physics has no hold over Eileen Gu, I am convinced.

On Monday, in the final of the Women’s Freeski Big Air event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Gu landed one of the more absolutely bonkers tricks at a competition. Heading into her third run of the final, needing a big trick to win gold with French skiier Tess Ledeux ahead of her, Gu laid it all out on the slope.

After landing a 1440 (four complete rotations) on her first run, Gu went full throttle with a double cork 1620 (four and a half rotations) for her third and final run, securing the gold in the process.

What an absolute monster of a trick. Not only that, this was the first 1620 Gu has landed in her career at just 18-years-old. The only other woman to land one in competition? Ledeux, who Gu passed for the gold with this trick that scored 94.50.

Gu is an American citizen, but decided to compete for China to represent her mother’s home country for these Beijing Games. Talk about a lovely — and incredibly epic — moment for Gu and her home Chinese fans!

Alex Ferreira is going for his first Olympic gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Games.

For the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, For The Win is helping you get to know some of the star Olympians competing on the world’s biggest stage. Leading up to the Opening Ceremony, we’re highlighting 15 Team USA athletes we think you should get to know. Up next is freestyle skier Alex Ferreira

Alex Ferreira has been on a mission since his first Olympic Games in 2018 in Pyeongchang.

The freeskier from Aspen, Colorado managed to nab the men’s halfpipe silver medal then, but he’s going for gold in 2022. He had a pretty solid shot at a first place finish in 2018 before fellow American David Wise snatched away from him.

Now, Ferreira is headed back to the Olympics again with another opportunity to take home a gold medal. Can he do it? We’ll see, but he’s currently ranked No. 2 in the International Ski Federation’s World Cup halfpipe standings.

In the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about the 27-year-old freestyle skier.

Lindsey Vonn went skiing with Hugh Jackman while he sang a ‘Les Miserables’ song

Skiing AND musical theater!

For fans of both sports and musical theater, Lindsey Vonn and Hugh Jackman recently created some pretty spectacular content.

The Olympic gold medal-winning skier and Oscar-nominated actor went skiing a few weeks ago at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, according to Vonn’s Instagram account. And, of course, they shot and posted several photos and videos of their time on the slopes on social media.

In addition to racing each other at one point — obviously, Vonn gave Jackman a huge head start — they also put on a little show. Well, Jackman did anyway, and with the help of a skiing violinist, he reprised his role of Jean Valjean from the 2012 movie, Les Misérables.

Accompanied by the skiing violinist, Jackman sang One Day More — the song performed at the end of the iconic show’s first act that also went viral late last year ahead of Election Day. And it was fantastic.

Vonn and Jackman looked like they had a great time at Deer Valley, so here’s a look at some of their other posts from their trip.

And their musical performances weren’t limited to the slopes either.

Here are the best 7 videos from one of skiing’s most iconic freeriding competitions

These riders were absolutely INSANE.

Skiers and snowboarders got wilder and more creative than ever with Jackson Hole resort hosting its 2021 Kings & Queens competition at Corbet’s Couloir this weekend.

The freeriding contest is an annual opportunity for skiers and boarders to huck themselves off what USA TODAY once called “America’s scariest ski slope.” Corbet’s Couloir is an in-bounds run at Jackson Hole. To enter the run, riders must drop into a chute with an extremely steep cliff and cornace, which most contestants elect to fly off… because of course they do.

This year, the competition coincided with a big snow storm, which made for a soft landing for contestants — but not necessarily an easy one, with many of the competitors struggling to stay on their feet. That said, we got to see some absolutely insane tricks.

Lindsey Vonn proposed to P.K. Subban on Christmas and he said yes

“Women aren’t the only ones who should get engagement rings!”

Legendary skier Lindsey Vonn and New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. Subban had quite a Christmas that ended with them being engaged after dating for two years.

Vonn was the one doing the asking, as she gave Subban an engagement ring that they showed off on social media.

She tweeted on Wednesday afternoon: “Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone!! On our 2 year anniversary, in a “non traditional” move, I asked PK to marry me and he said, Yes. Women aren’t the only ones who should get engagement rings! #MerryChristmas #equality.”

I think this “non traditional” move is pretty great. If you’re in love who gives a darn about who does the asking? Make the move and get the wheels in motion to have a rocking wedding… and an open bar, which is the key to any good wedding.

Here’s a picture of the happy couple and their awesome dogs:

Congrats!

Bode Miller delivers wife’s twin boys after midwife is late

Olympic Gold Medalist skier Bode Miller and his wife Morgan welcome identical twin boys into the world on Nov. 8, but dad played more than just a parenting role in the delivery.

Olympic Gold Medalist skier Bode Miller and his wife Morgan welcome identical twin boys into the world on Nov. 8, but dad played more than just a parenting role in the delivery.

The couple shared their unique birthing story publicly on Tuesday, explaining how their midwife did not show up in time for the birth and Bode helped deliver the babies instead. The 42-year-old former Olympian had help from his mother, who is a former midwife, but still described the experience as, “one of the more crazy things I’ve ever experienced.”

Morgan shared a picture of her newest baby boys on her Instagram page, writing “November 8th✨ A day that couldn’t have been scripted and aligned more perfectly to bring these two into the world. The birth story is mind-blowing and can’t wait to share. Insanely overwhelmed and grateful for all these gifts my baby girl keeps sending.”

The Millers now have four sons as the twins join their older brothers, Edward and Easton, in the household. The couple lost their 19-month-old daughter, Emeline, in a drowning accident about a year ago while Morgan was pregnant with Easton. The reference to the Millers’ “baby girl,” is a nod to their lost child, who the couple believes is a part of them having twins. When Morgan shared her pregnancy announcement, she wrote ““we knew Emmy had her hands in this miracle somehow.”

Bode has said publicly he wanted twin boys. The twins have two other older siblings as Bode also has a daughter and a son who are not Morgan’s children.
