Big 12 Football Strength of Schedule Rankings 2023

Who has the easiest and hardest football schedules in the Big 12 this season? We rank them from the nastiest to the lightest.

Big 12 football strength of schedule rankings. Who has it easiest and who has the nasties schedule going into the 2023 season?

Big 12 Football Strength of Schedule 2023

The world of the Big 12 is interesting with four new programs – BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – coming aboard, and with Texas and Oklahoma just hanging around until it can bold for the SEC in 2024.

For this year, who has the easiest and hardest schedules to go through?

This is hardly an exact science – the idea is to get it as close to the pin as possible – but for now, we’re going off our 2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look. Once we do the full-on 2023 Preview and finish up with every team and the preseason rankings, we’ll change this up.

But you’ll get the idea.

Here’s how we did this. If it’s a home game, take the first look ranking and that’s the score. So, if Iowa State is ranked 50th in this first round – remember, it can and will all change after we get through the whole offseason – a home game counts for 50 points. A road date gets cut in half, so playing the Cyclones on the road counts for 25 points. Any game against an FCS team counts as 134 points, and neutral site dates are scored like a home game.

The lower the overall score, the harder the schedule, so …

Ranked from the hardest schedule to the easiest.

1. West Virginia

Score: 431 It’s far tougher than it looks. The date at Penn State is the killer, hosting Pitt, and five road Big 12 road games will make it a grind.

Clemson Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Tigers miss from the ACC slate?

The Tigers don’t have just enough tough games to make it an interesting schedule, but the ACC run isn’t too bad.

Florida State has to come to Death Valley. That’s the big one. Win that, and everything else should be fine.

It would’ve been nice to miss the Seminoles, though. They’re on the slate, but Pitt isn’t. That’s the one good team to miss, with Boston College, Virginia, and Virginia Tech three relatively easy teams the Tigers don’t get to face. Louisville almost certainly would’ve been a win, but that’s a potentially dangerous offensive squad to skip.

Clemson Football Schedule What Really Matters

Beat Florida State, and get to the week off in mid-October – most likely – 6-0.

And then … game on.

Clemson only plays back-to-back road games once, and it just so happens to be against Miami and NC State right after that midseason break. Follow that up with Notre Dame, and with North Carolina and the trip to South Carolina to close – with Georgia Tech thrown in there – and there’s no real break over the last six weeks.

Clemson Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Clemson might not be above a clunker somewhere along the way, but Florida State, at Miami, at NC State, Notre Dame, North Carolina, at South Carolina. Any of those game could be where the season takes a hit, and it wouldn’t be shocking if there are two losses among those six.

But it’s Clemson. It’s going to expect to go into the final weeks with a shot at the College Football Playoff. With this schedule – helped by just three road games from the opener until the finish – it’s not bad even with those nasty dates to deal with.

Florida State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Seminoles miss from the ACC slate?

It’s … interesting.

There are a whole slew of configurations for everyone’s schedule in the ACC. Some have to play Notre Dame, some have five conference games, and everyone’s road situation is seemingly different.

Florida State packs its trips in two week packs, but more on that in a moment.

It doesn’t catch any major breaks in who it misses from the ACC. Not playing NC State is great, and not having to face North Carolina is a plus, but Georgia Tech, Louisville, and Virginia would all be big underdogs against the Noles.

That, and …

Florida State Football Schedule What Really Matters

At Clemson.

Fortunately for FSU, in the new world of the no-division ACC it’s okay to drop the date in Death Valley and still be in the conference title chase. The trip to Clemson comes right after a winnable game at Boston College, and that’s it for the true road games until late October.

Going to Wake Forest and Pitt will be tough, but again, that’s a quick run of road games and then it’s back home to face Miami. That means the Seminoles only leave Florida four times this year, but …

Florida State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The opener against LSU is a neutral site game in Orlando, the regular season finale against Florida is down the road in Gainesville, and then there’s that date at Clemson.

Throw in Pitt in early November – the weather might not be that bad – along with home games against Miami and a veteran Duke team, and there are just enough landmines to be a problem.

This is a College Football Playoff-caliber team returning in Tallahassee, but get to 11-1 on the way to the ACC Championship will be a tough run. However, if the team is good enough to win two of the three against LSU, Clemson, and Florida, it should be good enough to end up playing for the ACC title with a shot at the CFP.

Louisville Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cardinals miss from the ACC slate?

So who did Louisville send a ballon bouquet to for this ACC schedule?

It has to play Notre Dame as one of the conference-not-conference games, but there’s no Clemson, no Florida State, and no North Carolina or Wake Forest. There’s no Syracuse, either, but all that matters is missing the Tigers and Seminoles – those should be the ACC’s top two teams.

If that wasn’t nice enough, there are only four ACC road games, and …

Louisville Football Schedule What Really Matters

Seriously, could Jeff Brohm be handed a nicer welcoming gift?

Beyond missing a slew of the ACC big guys, there aren’t two road games in a row and there’s just one away date after October 14th.

Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Miami are all going to be better, but that’s a run of three straight games against teams that didn’t go bowling last year. In all, just five teams on the slate went to bowl games and Notre Dame and Kentucky are coming to Cardinal Stadium.

Louisville Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Eight wins. Start with that with this schedule and hope for more from there.

Starting the season at Georgia Tech will be a tone-setter, but win that – none of the September games are against teams that went bowling – and a 4-0 start is a must before dealing with NC State, Notre Dame, and Pitt.

Okay, so it’s not all as easy as it seems – again, Virginia Tech, Miami, and Virginia won’t be as bad as they were last year – but there isn’t a game on the slate the Cardinals can’t win.

Georgia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Yellow Jackets miss from the ACC slate?

It’s a bit of a rough schedule overall, but the Yellow Jackets catch a few breaks with the conference slate.

There’s no Notre Dame as part of the mix, and there’s no Florida State, NC State, or Pitt, either – Georgia Tech would likely be the underdog against all four teams. Not playing Duke isn’t a bad thing this year, but missing Virginia Tech doesn’t help.

Having four ACC road games instead of five is a plus, but …

Georgia Tech Football Schedule What Really Matters

The road game runs are strange.

There’s a stretch of three road games in four weeks, and none of them are easy with trips to Ole Miss, Wake Forest, and Miami. Winning one of those would be good, two would be amazing.

There’s also the unfortunate timing of the back-to-back road games in early November, going to Virginia and then Clemson.

However, on the flip side, that means there’s plenty of time at home for most of the year, and the last two games are at home, but …

Georgia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

At Clemson and Georgia in the final three weeks. That’s hardly fun, and going to Ole Miss and Miami will be tough, but overall there are enough winnable games to push for a solid season.

Louisville, South Carolina State, Bowling Green, Boston College, Syracuse, and throw North Carolina in there. There need to be at least four wins out of those home games, but five might be needed to get to six wins and bowl eligibility.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Miami Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Hurricanes miss from the ACC slate?

There aren’t a lot of breaks.

The Hurricanes don’t have to deal with Notre Dame, but they have to face Clemson, Florida State, and NC State – likely the three best teams in the ACC. At least the date with the Tigers is at home, but the Seminoles and Wolfpack are on the road.

On the plus side, they don’t have to face Pitt or Duke – the Blue Devils should be dangerous this year. Missing Wake Forest isn’t bad, but not getting to play Syracuse and Virginia Tech isn’t a positive.

Miami Football Schedule: What Really Matters

The finishing kick isn’t fun.

The lone road game until mid-October is at Temple – that’s not bad – but there’s a price to pay late.

In a perfect world, Miami misses the road games in cold weather locations, and it has to go to Boston College in the final regular season game.

That comes at the end of a rough November of three road games in the final four with back-to-back games at NC State and Florida State. That’s all after back-to-back games at North Carolina at at home against Clemson.

Miami Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not horrible, but there are just enough landmines to keep this from being a special campaign.

Texas A&M in non-conference play is a problem – even if the Aggies are coming to Hard Rock – and Clemson, at NC State, at Florida State, and at North Carolina are dangerous.

Even so, it would be a total disaster if Miami didn’t get bowl eligible with ease – a 5-0 start is possible with a win over Texas A&M – but it’ll all come down to being able to hold up in November.

NC State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wolfpack miss from the ACC slate?

It’s not all that bad.

Yeah, NC State has to play Clemson, but that’s a home game coming off a midseason week off.

Yeah, it has to deal with Notre Dame in the ACC’s friends-with-benefits deal, but that’s at home, too.

Missing Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Syracuse isn’t a plus – those three are more than beatable this season by this Wolfpack team – but not having to deal with Florida State is massive. That, and missing Pitt is a huge help.

NC State Football Schedule What Really Matters

The road schedule is a dream.

There are five games away from Raleigh, but North Carolina has to make the trip over, and so do Clemson, Florida State, Miami, and Notre Dame.

Going to UConn isn’t anything to worry about. Virginia and Virginia Tech will be better, but they failed to go bowling last year. Duke is dangerous, but … it’s still Duke, not Clemson. Going to Wake Forest is dangerous, but … it’s Wake Forest, not Florida State.

Going at least 4-1 on the road isn’t asking for anything crazy.

NC State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

There’s no blaming the schedule if this isn’t a huge season.

If NC State can take care of home, it’s not wrong to dream of going at least 10-2 if the team can come together fast.

No, the Wolfpack won’t beat Notre Dame, Clemson, Miami, and Florida State, but it can win at least two of those. And to keep hammering this home, those aren’t on the road.
