Tulsa at Houston Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

What can Tulsa do to make things any better than the 89-50 loss to Houston at the end of 2022?

The Golden Hurricane will keep firing from three and they’re strong at defending from the outside. Houston is among the best teams in the nation at guarding the three, but that this might be a strength in numbers thing.

They’ll put up at least 25 throws from the outside and make the Cougars work for every one of them. If they can make seven of them, they might make this interesting. If they can get to ten, it’ll be a fight.

But …

Why Houston Will Win

Tulsa might shoot a ton of threes, but that’s because it has to. It’s going to have to do something to keep up.

Houston should be able to get on the move and score no matter what Tulsa does.

One side can get up and down the court and generate fast break points, and the other side can’t. Combine the ability score in bursts to go along with a killer defense that’s going to put the clamps down – Tulsa won’t be able to do much on the glass and it doesn’t get to the line enough – and …

What’s Going To Happen

There might be some thought at a let down, but the Houston loss at home to Temple last week should keep the team nice and focused to blow through this with a decent intensity.

Tulsa’s offense as is has a hard time cranking up the points. Houston won’t let anything happen early on and should cruise from there.

Why USF Will Win

The Bulls weren’t able to get past SMU in the first game under the interim reign of Daniel Da Prato, but the offense was balanced and it wasn’t all that bad. The passing game has to be sharper and the O overall wasn’t able to keep up, but it wasn’t anything totally different.

The Tulsa offensive front isn’t great in pass protection, the running game isn’t great, and there are enough turnovers to potentially give the Bulls a shot.

The Golden Hurricane turned it over multiple times five times in the last six games, and USF needs them. However …

Bowl Projections | 10 Best Picks ATS

Why Tulsa Will Win

Can the Tulsa offense finally perk back up?

The passing game that was so strong earlier in the season hasn’t shown up over the last few games against the better teams, but it should work again without a problem this week.

The Bulls can’t do anything on third downs, the secondary is the second-worst in American in pass efficiency defense. and overall the D is dead last allowing 508 yards per game.

Tulsa might not be able to consistently get things moving, but they’ll put up yards in bunches when it has to.

USF allowed 200 yards rushing and 200 receiving in three of the last four games, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Tulsa won’t have to press. It might have a turnover issue, but USF’s defense isn’t taking it away.

USF isn’t coming close to stopping the run, passing games are hitting 75% of their passes over the last three games, and all of a sudden, the Tulsa O will return to its September form – at least for one game.

Tulsa vs Memphis Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Golden Hurricane might be sputtering a bit, but they’ve still got a shot at a bowl game by winning out.

The offense isn’t consistent enough, but the pass defense has been great, the running game is fine, and the team scores when it gets the chance.

For all that Memphis is doing right, it’s in a worse tailspin than Tulsa is with four straight losses thanks to a slew of turnovers, a defense that isn’t coming up with key stops or big plays, and …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Memphis Will Win

The Tulsa offense has stalled.

It ripped through everyone in the early part of the season with a high-octane passing game, but it’s not working with fewer than 160 passing yards in two of the last three games. There weren’t any turnovers against Tulane, but the 11 turnovers in the four games before that were a killer.

Memphis might have crashed against four of the stronger teams in the AAC, but the passing game is still amazing, the firepower isn’t there, and things should be fine as long as there aren’t a slew of turnovers.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Memphis is still throwing well even during the problems, and in this it’ll be about the running game.

3-0 when running 44 times or more, the Tigers are going to pound and pound some more against a Tulsa run defense that’s getting ripped apart by anyone who’s trying.

The Golden Hurricane offense will have its moments, but it won’t be able to keep up.

Tulane vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

The College Football Playoff gave the Green Wave enough love and respect for the No. 19 spot and the top team among the Group of Five programs – they’re in the lead in the race for the New Year’s Six bowl slot, but they have to win the conference to get there.

They’re making up for a few problems on defense with lots of takeaways – eight in the last three games – and the offense continues to be careful with the ball, adaptable, and very, very efficient through the air.

Tulsa’s offensive line has problems in pass protection, Tulane’s defense – No. 1 in the AAC – should be able to live in the backfield, and …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Tulsa Will Win

Tulsa has the passing game to keep up.

Tulane might have good defensive numbers, but it’s having problems against anyone who can throw.

Davis Brin has put up big numbers all year, but freshman Braylon Braxton stepped in against SMU wins was solid enough to be a problem for the Green Wave D – if he gets in.

The Tulsa has been good enough against the pass – it has more problems against the run. The offense is strong enough to make this a bit of a shootout, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Tulane doesn’t come up with a ton of takeaways, but Tulsa will provide them.

The running game should hit 200 yards, the offense will keep things moving and should control the clock enough to steady things after getting hit with a big pass play. Being +2 in turnover margin will make a big difference in a fun back-and-forth fight.

SMU vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

The passing offense continues to roll.

The team overall has a few issues and concerns, but the Mustangs are able to bomb away for well over 300 yards per game put the pressure on teams to try keeping up. Sometimes it works, and that’s when the mistakes come.

Tulsa hasn’t faced a whole slew of teams that can throw like SMU will, and it usually has big, big problems against the run. The Mustangs can run effectively when needed – they’re fine as long as they can crank up five yards per carry.

But they need to throw well to pull this off. They’ll get the yards, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Tulsa Will Win

Is starting QB Tanner Mordecai okay? He’s questionable after getting knocked out of the 29-27 loss to Cincinnati last week. Preston Stone is promising, but he’s not close to being the proven passer the main man is.

Again, it’s not like Tulsa has faced a who’s who of passing teams, but the pass defense is technically the best in the AAC. And again, the stats skew one way because everyone runs on the Golden Hurricane D, but the secondary is able to keep teams from throwing when they want to.

Offenses are only hitting 53% of their passes against this bunch, and if it’s Stone under center the numbers might not be a whole lot better.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, SMU is struggling at 2-5, but the losses came to Maryland and UCF on the road and at home against TCU and Cincinnati. None of those are egregious errors.

Tulsa has been way too inconsistent offensively, and the SMU defense has to take advantage of that by getting into the backfield against a struggling front line.

It’ll be a fight, but the Mustangs will sneak on by with the running game and pass rush working when it has to.

Tulsa vs Temple Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

Just score.

Tulsa has a whole lot of issues, but it has a high-powered passing offense and enough firepower to at least throw a few touchdowns on the board.

Would it be nice if this was the type of attack that scored 40ish without breathing hard? Of course, but that’s not necessary.

Temple doesn’t score.

It doesn’t move the chains, it doesn’t have a good enough running game, and it turns it over too much. It put up 28 in the win over UMass, but it hasn’t scores more than 14 against any other FBS team.

Combine that with being -10 in turnover margin, and there’s a problem.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Temple Will Win

What Temple does do right is attack, attack, attack.

The pass rush continues to be great, and that’s just enough be a bother against teams that can’t hold up on the line. Memphis gave up five sacks, UMass allowed four, Rutgers two, and the eight against Lafayette mattered.

Tulsa is one of the worst teams in America in pass protection. It’s going to be bothered all game long by LB Layton Jordan and the front seven that keeps on coming.

Here’s the real problem …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Padres-Phillies will be going on in the city at the exact same time as this. Let’s just say this won’t be the most tuned-in of football atmospheres.

Temple is coming off giving up 70 to UCF. Tulsa is coming off giving up 53 to Navy. Something has to give, and it’ll be the Owl defense just a wee bit.

Tulsa can score a little bit. Temple will score more than it usually does, but it won’t be consistent enough in the second half.

Navy vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

How do you beat Navy? You stop the run and control the clock. There’s a problem with the first part, but the second aspect shouldn’t be an issue.

Tulsa has the ability to get the passing game going. Get up fast, make Navy press, and all should be fine against an offense that doesn’t put up points in bulk and doesn’t have the ability to mount any sort of a comeback.

No, the stats against the run aren’t great, but that’s partly because the Golden Hurricane dealt with Ole Miss and Cincinnati over the last two weeks.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Navy Will Win

There’s a pass rush.

Navy might be known for its ground game, but the dense and pass rush have been the key to a decent team that might be 1-3 but it’s competitive enough to make games interesting.

The running game hasn’t worked like it needs to, but it should hit 200 yards for the second time all year while the other side should make a whole slew of plays in the backfield on a consistent basis.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Tulsa needs to get its season going with a. win.

The two nastiest games on the slate are out of the way, and now it needs to kick in or else a bowl game might be out of reach. It starts by scoring early, but Navy is playing strong enough defense to keep that from happening.

What Navy isn’t doing is running well.

It’s averaging just 3.2 yards per carry, but the attack will be okay against the Tulsa D. It’ll be a bit of a higher scoring game than Navy might like – Tulsa is better equipped for it.

Cincinnati vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The pass defense is good enough.

It might not have the NFL-caliber stars of last year’s secondary, but this year’s Bearcat group have been terrific so far.

Indiana’s Conner Bazelak threw for 280 yards and two scores last week in the 45-24 UC win, but he only hit 47% of his passes. So far this year, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is the only quarterback able to complete more than half of his throws against the D.

On the other side, the Tulsa defense as been good, but it doesn’t get enough of a pass rush. Give Ben Bryant time to throw and he’ll go off. He might ed to because …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Tulsa Will Win

Tulsa’s Davis Brin has been great.

Last week was the first blip. Ole Miss was able to keep Brin from going off, but he still threw two touchdown passes in the 35-27 loss. He’s not the most accurate passer around, but he’s bombing away – he led the nation in passing before last week – and he’s going keep on firing.

If he struggles again, the running game is there to help the cause. It was outstanding last week against the Rebels. Overall, the Golden Hurricane have the top offense in the American Athletic Conference, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

No, this won’t be the thriller that last year’s 28-20 Cincinnati win was.

Is this going to be a wild shootout? Brin will throw well, but it’ll be Bryant who stands out even if he doesn’t hit 300 yards for a fourth time in five games.

The Bearcat defense will hold up well against the run as the game goes on to keep the very quiet run of strong performances going.

Ole Miss vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Golden Hurricane have been a blast so far.

Don’t just blow off that 54-17 win over Jacksonville State. Rich Rodriguez’s team is dangerous, and there wasn’t any problem as Davis Brin and the nation’s No. 1 passing attack went off, and now it all gets to roll against an Ole Miss defense that hasn’t exactly been pushed yet.

Troy has a little bit of an air show, Georgia Tech doesn’t and Central Arkansas is Central Arkansas. Now the Rebel defense has to hold up, the offense has to keep the balance it showed over the first three games, and it’s going to have to do it all while almost never having the ball.

Tulsa – even with its style of offense – can control the clock. Ole Miss doesn’t get about time of possession.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The Rebel running game has been fantastic.

This is the Lane Kiffin offense that made Matt Corral a big deal and would love to wing it around the yard, but it’s the ground attack that’s ripping everything up.

The Rebels are fifth in the nation in rushing averaging 272 yards per game with 12 touchdowns so far, and now they’re going to rip through a Tulsa defensive front that hasn’t been awful, but is about to give up enough yards to matter.

The Ole Miss O line has been great, the defense has been better so far than it’s been in the Kiffin era, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Get ready to have some fun.

Yeah, Ole Miss has allowed 13 points so far. Yeah, the D line has been great at generating plays behind the line. Yeah, Tulsa has managed to handle the problems on one side with lots of production on the other.

This is going to be a back-and-forth firefight, and Ole Miss has the ability to outlast the other side.

Tulsa vs Jacksonville State Game Preview

Why Jacksonville State Will Win

Rich Rodriguez’s team is rolling.

The running game is averaging seven yards per pop with four different Gamecocks hitting the 100-yard mark on the season so far, and now it gets to show off against a Tulsa defense that’s been solid, but hasn’t seen anything that’s going to move this fast.

There have been mistakes, and there have been too many turnovers, but the defense has been fantastic – it’s been great against the pass so far – the six takeaways have made up for the problems, and overall, the team will be more than happy to get in an up-and-down shootout.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Tulsa Will Win

Davis Brin is balling.

So Jacksonville State wants to get into an offensive fight, okay.

Brin is one of the nation’s leading passers with 782 yards in Tulsa’s first two games. He’s not all that accurate, but he’s pushing the ball down the field, he’s averaging over nine yards per throw, and he’s been able to make up for the problems on the defensive side.

Jacksonville State is playing well, but QB Zion Webb is giving the ball away too much. In a game like this – like in Tulsa’s first two games – one slip, and one break of serve might be enough.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Jacksonville State offense will take over in a hurry.

Tulsa was able to hold up against Wyoming and Northern Illinois on the ground, but the Gamecock offense will be too consistent, and the defense will come up with just enough pressure and plays behind the line to get by.

This will be fun.
