DePaul vs UConn Game Preview

Why DePaul Will Win

It’s been a rough run for the Blue Demons, but the team is shooting just well enough to make this a fight.

It was great at keeping up in a tough loss at Marquette, the three point shooting hasn’t been bad, and there’s just enough pop to make UConn push a bit more than it might like.

The Huskies might be able to move the ball around well, but DePaul should be able to generate enough points off of turnovers to get on the move, and …

Why UConn Will Win

DePaul can’t stop anyone lately.

It’s on a ten-game losing streak mainly because it’s struggling to tilt the court the other way. The D is okay at forcing the tough shot, but the rebounding isn’t there to take advantage of it.

UConn is a killer on the boards, and it’s about to generate more than its share of second-chance points. In the 90-76 win a few weeks ago it was +14 in rebounding margin with ten on the offensive glass.

That offensive board total was low for the Huskies, but that’s because it was making everything. DePaul doesn’t guard from the outside hard enough to stop a few big scoring runs.

What’s Going To Happen

As always, DePaul will give it a good go and battle hard, but it won’t be able to get the defensive big plays needed to hold on.

UConn losses when the other offense goes off and hits at least 50%. DePaul will struggle to get above 40%. The points will be there, though, to make the Huskies keep on scoring.

Seton Hall at UConn Game Preview

Why Seton Hall Will Win

The Pirates continue to play the best defense in the Big East.

They’re not just good at coming up with stops a home, bug they’re been great on the road allowing 72 points or fewer in each of the last five road trips. They force a ton of turnovers, allow just 41% from the field, and they’re good at converting on the mistakes for fast break points.

That all happened in the first meeting with UConn – a 67-66 win – and this should be kept low scoring again.

Great at on the free throw line, they hit 17 in that first meeting to UConn’s 13 – that was the difference. The Pirates don’t get hit with a lot of fouls, and the Huskies do, but …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why UConn Will Win

No one in the conference plays better defense than the Huskies from three.

They’re good at getting on the move, the offense is phenomenal on the glass, and they love playing games with a good pace and can get into the 80s with ease if things get rolling.

It’s the D that’s getting it done, though. Seton Hall might have the league’s best defense, but UConn is better at coming up with blocks, generates more pressure, and should be able to play its style a bit better.

Seton Hall is 2-11 when allowing teams to hit 42% from the field, UConn is 14-1 when making 42% of its shots, and …

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

UConn will have to win without hitting 42%.

It’s great at home, and it’ll get the defense going to come up with enough stops to keep the close, but the offense will have problems from the outside and Seton Hall will be strong from the line.

The Huskies will come up big late, they’ll win on the boards, and unlike the first meeting, they’ll be okay from three.

Marquette vs UConn Game Preview

Why Marquette Will Win

You have to be able to get the O going to push past UConn, and Marquette is just the team to do it.

It might not be great at coming up with a big defensive stop, but it’ll get on the move and take every little mistake and blow it up with a big run of points.

On a five-game winning streak and on a run of ten wins in the last 11 games, it’s crushing teams with fast break points and easy shots. No one in the Big East is better from the field, but …

Why UConn Will Win

UConn has the ability to bomb away from the outside to keep up any pace.

It has no problem getting into a track meet with the Golden Eagles, but it can also gear down a bit and set up the right plays to get the easy-look three a bit better.

It lost to Marquette a month ago on the road when it wasn’t quite sharp enough from the outside – it wins that 82-76 game if it could’ve been just okay from three. It might not be a rock at home, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Can UConn really keep up the pace?

It’ll fall for the tempo that Marquette wants to play. Early on it’ll be a little more of a deliberate game, and then all of a sudden it’ll get going with a faster and faster speed until it turns into an up-and-down battle for stretches.

UConn will try to overcome a big Golden Eagle scoring burst with threes, but it’ll come up just short late in a fun, wild game.

UConn vs Georgetown Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

It hasn’t been the smoothest of runs lately going 2-4 in the last six games and 3-6 in the last nine, but that all came after beating Georgetown by 11.

The Huskies should be able to keep the score lower this time around with the defense that’s great at guarding from three against the struggling Hoya offense.

It’s a Patrick Ewing team, so Georgetown can rebound, but there’s little to nothing happening from the outside and there aren’t enough points coming off the break to make up for the struggling shooting.

All UConn has to do is get up fast and it has a shot, but …

Why Georgetown Will Win

This is one of the few teams that can hang with the Huskies on the boards.

The first time around might have been a tough loss, but it was +11 in rebounding margin. No, the Hoyas can’t shoot all that well, but at least they come up with second chance points.

So what’s UConn’s problem lately? There are too many turnovers, fouls have become a big issue, and …

What’s Going To Happen

UConn should be okay as long as it gets a little bit of a lead.

It’s about hitting from three. UConn is 5-4 when teams hit 30% or better from the outside, but Georgetown has to hit enough of them to matter. It’s one of the worst outside shooting teams in the country, and that’s going to be a problem late.

UConn vs DePaul Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

It’s been a rough run for UConn.

More on that in a moment, but there are positives among the gloom of the last month.

Few teams move the ball around as well as the Huskies do. They’re great at coming up with assists for easy points, They’re the best in the Big East at coming up with threes, and it all ties into being great on the offensive boards.

DePaul’s defense isn’t anything special, it’s awful at guarding the three, and rebounding is a big, big issue. However …

Why DePaul Will Win

The pollsters still love their Huskies.

UConn has lost four of their last five and seven of their last nine, but they’re still clinging on to a top 25 spot because of a hot start with some nice wins. What’s their problem?

The defense has gone bye-bye.

Yeah, the UConn offense can fill it up, and the three point defense has been amazing, but it allowed 82 points or more in four of the last eight games, all losses. Worse than that, the team is unbeaten when allowing fewer than 67 points and 2-6 when giving up more.

The DePaul offense might not be stellar, but it’s great from three, terrific on the free throw line, and it’s 9-4 when coring 69 points or more. But …

What’s Going To Happen

DePaul is 0-8 when scoring fewer than 69 points. This is where the UConn defense steps up and takes over to get out of the doldrums.

Yes, DePaul has a way of rising up and showing something big from time to time in Wintrust, but it’s about to get destroyed on the boards and won’t be able to do enough from three to matter.

This won’t exactly be the moment when UConn is back to form, but it’ll be a huge help.

Myrtle Beach Bowl What Happened

In a tale of two halves, Marshall took advantage of big mistakes and got the running game going on the way to a 21-0 halftime lead and a 28-0 advantage. UConn found its groove, scored 14 points on two Victor Rosa runs, and made it interesting in the fourth quarter. UConn drives stalled, Marshall’s D held up, and the was able to grind down the clock to close.

Marshall QB Cam Fancher threw two short touchdown passes, but again, it was the D that took over early. Damion Barber came up with a pick six, there were four takeaways in all, and the line – outside of the two Rosa touchdowns – held up great against the run.

This wasn’t pretty. It seemed like every other play was marred by a flag, that’s because that’s basically what happened. The two combined for 21 penalties for 227 yards and six turnovers.

Myrtle Beach Bowl Player of the Game

Eli Neal, LB Marshall
The junior was all over the place tying for a game-high ten tackles with seven solo stops with 1.5 tackles for loss and a broken up pass.

CFN Experts Picks Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Myrtle Beach Bowl Fun Stats

– Marshall RBs Rasheen Ali and Khalan Laborn combined for 182 rushing yards and an Ali touchdown on 36 carries.

– UConn QB Zion Turner ran for 25 yards, but he only completed 9-of-27 passes for 166 yards and three interceptions.

– Third down conversions: Marshall 7-of-15 – UConn 3-of-12

100 Best Bowl Players | Ranking How Good the Bowls Were

Myrtle Beach Bowl What It All Means

UConn lost, but it played well in the second half, had the effort and energy, and it was okay despite the 14 point loss. But start with this … who cares that it couldn’t pull it off? UConn was in a bowl game for the first time since 2015 and the second time since 2010.  It was a fantastic season under Jim Mora Jr. as he turned around a program that wasn’t going anywhere.

UConn won six games from 2017 to 2021 and won six this year – it was playing with house money in Conway. However, this was a shot at the first winning season since 2010 and the first bowl win since 2009.

It was a strange nine-win season for Marshall, but with a win over Notre Dame early, and closing out with a bowl victory, 9-4 looks very, very good for second-year head coach Charles Huff.

For years, Marshall was a give for a bowl win under Doc Holliday, but the program lsat three in a row including last year’s New Orleans under Huff. This wasn’t a complete game – the team lost its edge in the second half, but it won by two touchdowns and got that ninth win. It’s a great way to go into the offseason.

Marshall vs UConn Myrtle Beach Bowl 5 Things To Know

Myrtle Beach Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

How did Jim Mora Jr. not make every Coach of the Year list? Before 2022, UConn won exactly ten games since 2015, hadn’t had a winning season since 2010, didn’t play in 2020, and a 2019 victory over UMass was the lone win against an FBS team since the middle of the 2017 season. Mora’s team shocked Fresno State as it went on a 5-1 run to get bowl eligible before dropping the regular season finale. This has been a wildly successful year no matter what happens here.

It’s been a crazy season for Marshall. It made a massive splash with a shocking win over Notre Dame, and then it promptly followed it up with a loss to Bowling Green as part of a rough 2-4 run with a tough November looming. The switch was flipped, the defense took things up a notch, and the Herd closed out 4-0.

For years Marshall was a bowl season given. It lost its first two, and then from 1998 to 2018 it went 12-1, with the only loss coming to Cincinnati in the 2004 Fort Worth. Along that ride was a 16-10 win over UConn in the 2015 St. Petersburg. Now it’s on a three-bowl losing streak including a 36-21 rocking from Louisiana in last year’s New Orleans Bowl.

It’s just the seventh bowl appearance in the history of UConn football. It’s 3-3 with the last win coming over South Carolina in the 2009 PapaJohn.com Bowl. The only bowl between this and the 2010 Fiesta loss to Oklahoma was that loss to Marshall. Yeah, this game means something.

The Myrtle Beach Bowl is only in its third season, but the first two games at least were interesting. It’s become a landing place for good Group of Five programs, and it’s got the college football day all to itself on a Monday afternoon. Appalachian State ran wild in a 56-28 win over North Texas in the inaugural game, and Tulsa’s 30-17 win over Old Dominion last year was more entertaining than the final score.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Marshall Will Win The Myrtle Beach Bowl

It’s a nice UConn team, but it’s about to run into a brick wall – not literally, but almost.

Marshall might not have a high-powered offense, but the run defense has been tremendous all year long, finishing fifth in the nation allowing just 88 yards per game. No one was able to get to 200 on this bunch – not Notre Dame, not Appalachian State, not Coastal Carolina – and UConn has to run well to win.

The Huskies were able to pull off a few wins when the ground game wasn’t flying, but the O line allows way too many plays behind the line, third downs are almost impossible to convert, and the passing attack does nothing down the field – UConn is dead last in the nation in yards per completion.

On the other side, Marshall is 6-0 when running for 200 yards or more. UConn is 1-6 when allowing more than 155 yards, but ….

Why UConn Will Win The Myrtle Beach Bowl

The running game really could work.

Granted, it cranked up the big yards against some of the worst run defenses in America, but with time to prepare and get everyone healthy again, the offense is about to hit Marshall with a wave of young backs.

Zion Turner is a dangerous young quarterback who can get on the move, the running backs should push for close to five yards per carry, and it should be able to slow the game down a bit.

The UConn defense doesn’t do too much to get behind the line, but it doesn’t take much to disrupt the Marshall attack. The passing game isn’t great, the O is miserable at converting drives into points, and the line is way too leaky.

However …

Why UConn Will Win

Guess who’s going bowling?

With a running game that’s taking over games and a defense that’s taking the ball away, UConn is on a wonderful run of three straight wins with five victories in the last six games.

For the most part, the defense has problems against passing teams – not a problem this week. The defensive front got ripped through by Liberty, but the two takeaways helped make up for it.

UConn has forced multiple turnovers in five of the last six games – it won all five.

However …

Bowl Projections | 10 Best Picks Against the Spread

Why Army Will Win

Army doesn’t have a big issue with turning it over.

The running game hasn’t been as dominant as it needs to be, and the defense hasn’t quite showed up as expected, but the mistakes aren’t there.

Penalties are never a part of the picture, and while two fumbles against Troy proved costly, they weren’t the reason for the loss. The running game was able to move through the great D enough to make it a battle in a 10-9 loss, and now it has to get moving.

Army has the potential to beat UConn at its own game. Run, control the clock, get the defense off the field – that’s what the Knights do.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Army hasn’t had a whole lot of luck in a wildly disappointing year, but all three of the wins – and a good performance against UTSA – came at home. It’s 0-4 away from Michie.

On the flip side, UConn is 5-1 at home and 1-4 on the road. Granted, the competition has been a whole lot tougher outside of East Hartford, but in a low scoring game the home side’s ground game will be just a wee bit more effective.

Liberty vs UConn Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

The passing game continues to be steady.

It might not be all that explosive, and it might not be consistent, but it’s going to come up with at least 220 yards getting out of the locker room. Against the UConn secondary, it’s should be able to connect for at least 65% of its throws and keep everything moving.

The run defense has been a rock. It held Arkansas to 144 yards in the 21-19 win, it hasn’t allowed more than 150 yards in any of the last seven games, and UConn can’t win if it doesn’t control the game on the ground.

But …

Why UConn Will Win

Liberty plays to the level of its competition.

It rose up and rocked against BYU and Arkansas, and it struggled against Gardner-Webb and – for a wee bit – against UMass and Akron.

UConn might not have cranked up the offense against UMass, but it came up with the 27-10 win, it’s been able to win four of the last five  – including against Fresno State – by generating 14 takeaways during the stretch, and Liberty has had its turnover issues at times this season.

What’s Going To Happen

Liberty is weird.

It might be 8-1, and it might be pulling off big wins, but it turns it over way too much, the offensive line isn’t that great, and it keeps on rolling.

UConn is 4-1 at home and 1-4 on the road, but it’ll give up just enough through the air to come up short.

UMass vs UConn Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

It’s been a rough run for the UMass offense, but the defense hasn’t been too awful against the run and does just enough to get into the backfield to matter.

Stop the run, stop UConn. There’s no passing game coming from the Huskies, the downfield throws aren’t there, and the offense as a whole struggles to get to 300 yards.

UMass needs takeaways, and UConn has a bit of a fumbling problem. This should be a low scoring game, so even being a +2 in turnover margin might be the difference. However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 9

Why UConn Will Win

UConn has forced three turnovers or more in three of the last four games including five last week in the 13-3 shocker over Boston College.

The Huskies have found a nice mix to be more than just competitive winning three of the last four games. There isn’t much from the UConn passing attack, but there’s really not anything happening from UMass through the air.

The Minutemen have a hard time getting to 100 yards per game, the UConn defense hasn’t been bad against the run, and it shouldn’t take too many points putting this away against the nation’s worst offense.

What’s Going To Happen

UConn isn’t going to do anything crazy. Run, run some more, control the clock a little bit better, and rely on the defense to hold up against the run.

This won’t be anything thrilling – be shocked if there’s any sort of flurry of points – but UConn will get this done to keep its bowl hopes alive.
