Oregon State vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Oregon State can do this. It just has to keep Arizona from being okay from the field.

Duh, the more a team struggles at shooting the better the chance the other side has at winning, but Oregon State really, really needs Arizona to be off. It really, really needs to force mistakes and crank up its solid defense.

For all of its problems, Oregon State is able to keep teams to around 66 points. It has to slow this to a crawl, and it’ll have a shot if it keeps the Cats to under 42% from the field because …

Why Arizona Will Win

Oregon State has yet to win when allowing the other side to hit 42% or more of its shots. Arizona is almost incapable of shooting that poorly.

With the size inside and the best shooting team from three in the Pac-12, Arizona hovers around 49% from the field and has yet to lose when it made 38% or more of its shots.

In the first meeting – an 86-74 win – it made 53% of its shots from the field. The only thing that didn’t make it worse was a slew of turnovers.

No, the Cats aren’t unbeatable at home – Washington State as able to roll in a shocker a few weeks ago, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Cats are unbeatable at home against a team that can’t manufacture points on the move or with the extra pass.

The Oregon State defense is good enough to keep this from getting too insane, but Arizona will bring at least 80 points with it out of the locker room. Oregon State can’t keep up with that in any way.

Oregon vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

The Ducks have picked it back up.

They still have brain cramps here and there when the offense stops working, but for the most part the defense has been able to hold up, there’s no problem on the boards, and everything is fine when the D can hold teams to under 41% from the field.

Oregon is 12-0 when keeping teams to under that mark – and that includes Arizona in a 70-60 win up in Eugene.

Arizona is a terrific shooting team – helped by the inside presence – but but it’s not above struggling from time to time, especially from three. It turns it over too much, the defense isn’t anything special, and …

Why Arizona Will Win

Arizona is playing way too well.

It’s been better from three over the last several weeks, the inside production is there, and more than anything else, the defense has stepped it up in a big way.

Ever since Oregon hit just about everything in the Wildcat loss a few weeks ago, the defense has clamped down hard. It held offenses to under 40% from the field in six of the last nine games, the D from three has been suffocating, and it all feeds into the offense manufactures points in every way.

Arizona is great on the move, better at getting to the free throw line, and again, the threes are dropping lately.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon has a good mix of things to at least keep this close and make it a battle.

It’s good enough on the boards to keep the Wildcats from generating a slew of second chance points, but it can’t run with them. Expect one big second half scoring burst to bust through a tight game that’s going to be a little bit of a struggle early.

Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wildcats miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Wildcats keep all of the same teams on the slate from what was the Pac-12 South, They catch a bad break missing Cal, but not having to play Oregon obviously matters. The divisions are gone, but getting Washington and Oregon State to come to Tucson is a plus.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Arizona Football Schedule What Really Matters

Last year the Wildcats had to deal with San Diego State and North Dakota State – both very, very dangerous – along with Mississippi State.

They came through just fine with good wins over the Aztecs and Bison, but they lost at home in a good battle with the Bulldogs. Expect 2-1 again with Northern Arizona and UTEP to go along with the trip to Mississippi State.

There’s a rough stretch of three road games in four weeks, but that’s followed by a week off. The team only leaves Arizona once – for Colorado – from October 14th on.

Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not a bad schedule for a program looking to take a big step forward.

Of the five Pac-12 road games, going to Stanford, Colorado, and Arizona State are all more than manageable. If the Cats can improve a bit, beating Washington State is a possibility, too.

The schedule is decent enough to get to at least six wins and a bowl game. It’s going to take an upset somewhere, but Washington, UCLA, Utah, and Oregon State all have to make the trip to the desert.

If all goes well, this shouldn’t come down to the date with Arizona State to get bowl eligible.

Why Arizona State Will Win

Five straight. 70-7 in 2002. 38-15 last year. Arizona State has a hold on the Territorial Cup and now gets a potentially demoralized Arizona team.

Of course the Wildcats will be jacked for this – they still have to hear about 70-7 – but they went from beating UCLA and having a bowl game there on the table, to now being ensured of a losing season after a disappointing day against Washington State.

The Cat D wasn’t bad against Wazzu, but it hasn’t been a rock, especially against the run. Arizona State has to get grinding right away and control the tempo and the clock.

Last week was a rough 31-7 loss to Oregon State, but the Sun Devils averaged over six yards per carry and should come close to five yards per pop in this. The passing attack was great against Colorado and UCLA, there should be a good balance, and the Arizona defense doesn’t generate the pressure to stop any of it.

But …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Arizona Will Win

Now this becomes Arizona’s bowl game.

Arizona State is a program that’s about to flip around fast over the offseason with a whole lot of changes. Arizona has everything in place and keeps on improving, and this is a next step forward.

No, the defense isn’t anything great, but the offense is about to go off. Washington State’s strong defense was able to win by forcing four takeaways – all picks – but Arizona State doesn’t take the ball away. It hasn’t come up with a turnover in two weeks, and it forced multiple takeaways just twice all year.

The secondary allowed 200 yards or more in every Pac-12 game except the loss to UCLA, and that’s because the Bruins ripped off over 400 yards on the ground. So …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Arizona offense will go off.

Jayden de Laura will get over the rough day against Wazzu and rip off well over 300 yards without the big mistakes.

Arizona State will keep up with the ground game, but it won’t be enough. The offense will flinch with a few third down misfires, and the Wildcat offense will take advantage of every chance.

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars got the two wins they needed to get bowling.

It was a good season with a few nice early wins, a power outage was a problem on a three-game losing streak, and then everything perked back up against Stanford and Arizona State to get there.

This isn’t the most consistent team, but it’s finding ways to beat the mediocre teams with a great presence in the backfield thanks to one of the league’s best pass rushes. That and the run defense are the keys to a program that’s used to winning with a high-powered passing game.

The Cougars are 5-0 when they allow fewer than 75 rushing yards and 6-1 when giving up fewer than 175. Arizona is 1-5 when it doesn’t get to 160 rushing yards, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Arizona Will Win

That one win was last week against UCLA.

The Wildcats came up with one of their biggest wins in years in a stunning 29-23 performance over UCLA. The ground game was good enough, and former Washington State QB Jayden de Laura came up with a legendary day hitting just about everything for over 300 yards.

The defense might be a problem, but it came through when it absolutely had to against the Bruins. The offense is averaging 462 yards per game and keeps the pressure on game after game.

It’s all about the takeaways. The Cats are all but dead when they give it up multilevel times – 0-4 when turning it over three or more times – and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Wazzu defense has only come up with multiple takeaways once in the last six games.

It’s been an up-and-down season for Arizona – it was able to beat UCLA but failed in a game it should’ve had in a mistake-filled loss at Cal – but it’s bowl eligible if it wins this and takes down Arizona State next week.

The first part of the equation will happen in an interesting afternoon game with the Wildcat offense pushing through in the fourth quarter with a late scoring drive to finally break through.

Arizona vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The offense is going to provide a push.

The defense might not do a lot, but the passing game that’s been rolling all season will hit the Bruins for at least 250 yards and should come up with well over 400 yards of total O.

The Wildcat offensive line hasn’t been bad at keeping defenses out of the backfield, everyone is getting time to work, and it should make this a shootout.

UCLA’s secondary has allowed 250 yards or more in five of the last six games and got hit for 349 last week against Arizona State. However …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why UCLA Will Win

The Arizona defense doesn’t do anything to get into the backfield.

It’s dead last in the nation in tackles for loss, there’s no pass rush, and it allowed 473 yards and 38 points per game.

UCLA can fire away at will, but it’s going to grind it out from the start with an offensive front that’s paving the way for the Pac-12’s best running game.

Arizona has allowed over 300 rushing yards three times, and it would’ve given up that many to USC if Caleb Williams wasn’t so busy bombing away for over 400 yards.

As long as UCLA stays focused and keeps up the scoring, there won’t be a problem.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona will have its moments, but the defense will once again fall.

UCLA’s pass defense might get picked apart too easily and will give up a few too many big plays, but the steadiness of the ground attack will be too much to overcome.

Arizona will blink early in the second half, and that will be enough for the Bruins to pull away.
