Quick Lane Bowl What Happened

New Mexico State got up 17-0 helped by two touchdown passes from Diego Pavia, but his legs closed it out. Bowling Green roared back in the fourth quarter with 12 points helped by a blocked field goal for a punt and a 19-yard touchdown catch from Tyrone Broden, but it couldn’t get the ball back. Pavia and the Aggie offense were able to grind down the final 6:27 minutes converting three third down tries.

Bowling Green lost starting quarterback Matt McDonald early in the game with an apparent head injury. The offense sputtered without him, but it finally got kickstarted with a kickoff return for a touchdown from Ta’ron Keith early in the second half coming off a field goal.

– The Falcons turned it over twice, but they were both killers. They had their chances, but stalled drives, failed third down stops, and those giveaways  kept them from every getting control of the game. That had almost everything to do with …

Quick Lane Bowl What It All Means

How massive is this for New Mexico State? It’s the first ever bowl win for head coach Jerry Kill – he was 0-2 at Northern Illinois and 0-3 at Minnesota – the program goes off to Conference USA with a winning season – the first since 2017 and just the second since 2002. The Aggies won a bowl in 2017 – that was the first time it got one since 1960. Now they’re 3-0-1 all-time in bowls.

Bowling Green got to a bowl game. Start with that. Yeah, this was a losing season, but for a program that was so bad for so long – it didn’t win more than four games in a year from 2016 to 2021 – this was finally a step-forward season under Scot Loeffler in his fourth season at the helm.

Would it have been different if McDonald didn’t get knocked out of the game early? That’s not quite fair to either side – Bowling Green had its chances, but blew it. Now the program hasn’t won a bowl game since 2015 and is just 1-6 since taking down the 2004 GMAC.

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Just when it seemed like the Falcons were going to fizzle out after a blowout loss to Kent State, they rose up and rocked Toledo last week with a huge day from the passing attack in the 42-35 win.

Matt McDonald threw for 395 yards and four scores with the big plays there for the taking down the field, and now it’s up to the Ohio defense to stop it all.

The Bobcat defense has been a problem, especially against the teams that can throw. The team is 5-0 when allowing fewer than 300 yards and 3-3 when it gives up that many or more, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Ohio Will Win

The Ohio offense is going to roll.

The Bowling Green offense is hit-or-miss. It’s okay overall, but the passing game is hardly consistency with too many short range throws that don’t go anywhere. That wasn’t the case against Toledo, and the Bobcat defense is going to give up big plays, too, but the O should make up for it.

Ohio has won six straight with the most efficient passing game in the MAC averaging over 300 yards per outing, and there aren’t enough mistakes to matter.

Bowling Green could use some takeaways, but Ohio has gone turnover-free six times all year and hasn’t had any real turnover problems.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Okay, so here’s the deal.

Ohio wins the MAC East with a win. Bowling Green wins the MAC East with a win and if Buffalo loses to Kent State. Buffalo – even though the game against Akron last week was cancelled-without-really-being-cancelled wins the division if it beats Kent State and Bowling Green loses this.

Basically, both teams need to try.

Ohio – 5-0 in Athens – will get more out of its offense, and the defense will keep from breaking after a whole lot of bending.

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The Falcons are still in the hunt for the MAC East title if they win out – Ohio is coming up – and get a little help. For now, getting a win would mean a bowl game. That’s more than good enough.

They might be having problems with mistakes, but they’re used to that by now – they beat Central Michigan despite getting flagged 17 times and fought through games with multiple turnovers.

They have to use their great pass rush to keep the Toledo passing game from going off. That disruptive front has to force takeaways, going 3-0 with three or more turnovers and Toledo 0-3 with multiple turnovers, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Toledo Will Win

Toledo wins when it runs well.

It’s 7-1 when it hits 130 yards on the ground – only losing to Buffalo when the O couldn’t stop giving the ball away – and the Bowling Green run defense is spotty.

The Falcons don’t get steamrolled over, but they couldn’t handle the flash of Kent State last week allowing over 200 yards on the ground, Buffalo ran wild, and the UCLA was UCLA with is rushing attack. They’re 0-3 when allowing over 200 rushing yards, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Toledo is going to start running and keep running. Getting to 200 yards won’t be a problem, but how much will the team care?

The MAC West title is already wrapped up and a bowl game is now a lock, but it’s the final regular season game of the year. It might be a Tuesday night, but it’s Senior Day.

The Rockets are going to control the game on the ground from the start.

Kent State vs Bowling Green Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The running game keeps on rocking.

The rest of the Golden Flash season has been a disappointment – the team is fighting for its bowl survival, needing to win out to get a bid – but the ground attack that’s the best in the MAC rips off yards in chunks with 200 yards or more in four of the last five games.

Bowling Green’s defense has problems against teams that can throw – and Kent State can do that – and it’s 0-2 when allowing 200 rushing yards or more. It’s a small sample size, but the second-best team in the MAC – Buffalo – ran for 280 yards.

Kent State should be able to rip off at least 200, but …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The Kent State pass defense hasn’t been close.

It doesn’t take the ball away enough – just three picks in the last seven games – and allows 284 yards per game. The Bowling Green offense should be able to throw to keep things moving.

The defense that’s great at coming up with sacks should be able to get in the backfield enough to be disruptive, and the takeaways should matter. The Falcons are 3-0 when coming up with three or more takeaways and forced multiple turnovers in six of the nine games.

Kent State’s defense has forced multiple turnovers twice, with three of the nine coming against Georgia.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

2015. That’s the last time Bowling Green got to a bowl game. It hasn’t won more than four games in any season since then.

Not only is it a win away from being bowl eligible, but it’ll stay in the mix for the MAC East title.

Kent State has the offense to pull off the upset, but it’s 3-1 at home, 0-5 on the road, and this is Senior Night for the Falcons. With road games at Toledo and Ohio to close, the pressure is on to win now, or else.

Western Michigan vs Bowling Green Game Preview

Why Western Michigan Will Win

Is this really when the season turns for the Broncos?

They’ve had a rough year without a lot of luck – and they haven’t made their own breaks – but when they don’t turn the ball over and the defense holds up, good things happen.

The defense and pass rush should be enough to keep this close. Bowling Green might have a nice passing game, but the offensive front gives up a ton of plays in the backfield. As long as the Broncos can keep the score low and do well on third downs, the Falcons will sputter.

However …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The Western Michigan offense isn’t working.

It’s having a nightmare of a time can’t consistently hit with the passing game – it’s only been able to get over 60% once – and there isn’t enough of a ground game to make up for it.

Bowling Green’s defense might not be anything special, but it’s been amazing at getting to the quarterback, the run D has been stunningly solid, and it’s not going to have to do anything heroic.

As long as the defense is okay, Matt McDonald and the passing game should be good enough to take control.

But …

Expert Picks College Week 10NFL Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s going to screw this up?

Lately, Bowling Green hasn’t seen a penalty it didn’t like to commit with 35 in the last four games and seven turnovers. Western Michigan also has a penalty issue and is prone to turnovers.

Home field doesn’t always mean much in MACtion, but the Falcons will get by in this on defense.

Bowling Green vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Where did that come from?

Bowling Green has been able to surprise here and there, but the 98 rushing yards allowed in the 17-13 win over Miami University last week was only surpassed by the 91 passing yards given up.

The offense struggled, but the passing game should do what it wants and everything goes fine when the ground attack is working.

It starts with the pass rush that’s the best in the MAC – ask Miami – and it should continue against a Central Michigan team that has too many turnover issues, but …

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewas can get behind the line, too.

Why Miami University Will Win

Can the RedHawk running game continue to roll?

All of a sudden the program that struggled for years to grind is among the best in the MAC on the ground. It hit the 200-yard mark in each of the last three games and in four of the last five.

Bowling Green can’t stop it.

The Falcons have a bigger issue against the pass, but the run defense is struggling lately – it got run over by Buffalo in the 38-7 loss – but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The Falcons have been throwing well.

The O didn’t work against Mississippi State or UCLA, but it’s been able to get to at least 240 yards against everyone else. Miami might be good at controlling games, but the secondary is getting eaten alive allowing 250 yards or more in every game but the wins over Buffalo and Robert Morris.

As long as the Falcons keep throwing well and Matt McDonald can hit over 60%, they’ll make this a fight.

Bowling Green vs Akron Game Preview

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The 45-14 loss to Mississippi State aside, the offense has been a bit more effective in the passing game and the run defense hasn’t been too miserable.

The offense isn’t turning the ball over, the takeaways have been enough to matter, and the pass rush should be a big deal against the Akron offensive line.

The Zips aren’t stopping anyone from getting to the quarterback – allowing 20 sacks so far – but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Akron Will Win

The 1-3 start might make it seem like the Akron everyone is used to kicking around, but that’s not the case under new head coach Joe Moorhead.

The Michigan State and Tennessee games were brutal, but the Zips played well in the 21-12 loss at Liberty last week.

Even with all of the problems, DJ Irons and the passing game are okay, the defense should start to look a little better against the easier competition, and at home, the team should be able to hold up against the run.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both programs are in better shape than they’ve been over the last few years when their meeting was a matchup of the sad. This week will be a good indicator to see where they’re both at.

The difference will be in the pressure. The Bowling Green defensive front will bother Irons enough, the Zips won’t get behind the line, and this should be interesting for about three quarters.

The Falcons will pull away in the fourth quarter.

Marshall vs Bowling Green Game Preview

Why Marshall Will Win

Anything interesting happen last Saturday?

Here’s the crazy part about the Marshall win over Notre Dame – that shouldn’t have been that shocking.

Okay, so it was, but the Herd defense was supposed to be this good, the running game was supposed to be this good, and it all worked in a nearly perfect performance with three takeaways, a great day from QB Henry Colombi, and with the good running backs doing what they do.

As long as everyone is past what happened in South Bend, there shouldn’t be a problem against a Bowling Green team that won’t be able to run a lick on this defensive front and won’t keep the Herd passing game from keeping things moving.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Bowling Green Will Win

So how do the Falcons pull this off?

First, they need Marshall to come in without a whole lot of focus. Second, they have to get the passing game going right away.

Here’s the part about that win no one wants to think about – it’s possible that Notre Dame really can’t do a whole lot offensively right now. Bowling Green has to give it a shot by pressing the corners deep.

Falcon QB Matt McDonald threw five touchdowns last week in the wild loss to Eastern Kentucky. As long as he gets the ball out of his hands quickly, the passing attack should move.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Keep grinding with the running game, keep attacking with a defense that should be able to get into the backfield, and make Bowling Green take lots of chances.

Marshall should be able to do all of that.

It will have the ball for well over 35 minutes as the running game rumbles for 250 yards and controls the tempo throughout.

Bowling Green vs Eastern Kentucky Game Preview

Why Eastern Kentucky Will Win

They gave it a run.

The Colonels roared in the fourth quarter against Eastern Michigan but came up short in the 42-34 win at Eastern Michigan. The offense cranked up almost 500 yards, Parker McKinney and the passing game were great – he led the team in rushing and ran for a score, too – and now the Bowling Green defense has to prove it can stop someone.

The Falcons lost 45-17 to UCLA last week after getting out to a hot start. They couldn’t stop the ground game, their own rushing attack stalled, and against EKU they need to crank up the steady production.

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Eastern Kentucky will make mistakes.

12 penalties and two turnovers were the big problem against Eastern Michigan, and not being able to stop the passing game was an issue, too.

The Bowling Green offense struggled against a good UCLA, but it’s got the passing game parts to get going, Matt McDonald knows what he’s doing, and on the other side, the downfield passing attack from EKU isn’t going to be anything steady.

What’s Going To Happen

The Falcons have to keep on scoring.

Eastern Kentucky has enough all-around pop to the O to keep the pressure on, the the mistakes it made at EMU were likely more of a first game blip than anything else.

This will go deep into the fourth quarter, but Bowling Green’s offense will get two solid scoring drives to get past the threat.
