IDP free agent report: Week 17

Week 17 marks the end of the fantasy regular season whether your league wrapped up in week 16 or the finals are this week. While playoff pools are gaining popularity, it’s hard to recapture the magic of a regular-season fantasy league. Week 17 is a difficult week to navigate as the majority of teams are done at this point, nagging injuries might result in a premature end to a player’s season and every if veterans remain healthy enough to go, teams who are out of it might still decide to play a younger player lower in the depth chart to see what they have rather than continue to roll with the veteran. As such, week 17 finals can be rare but if you find yourself playing in one, one simple rule is best to live by. Try to stick to players who are on teams that have something to play for. They represent the least amount of risk when it comes to actual performance versus expected value in week 17.

Week 17 marks the end of the fantasy regular season whether your league wrapped up in week 16 or the finals are this week. They represent the least amount of risk when it comes to actual performance versus expected value in week 17.

Linebacker Plays

Jahlani Tavai suffered a shoulder injury against the Broncos in week 16 which hampered his output to 3 solo tackles as the rookie garnered only 21% of the snaps. KJ Wright delivered 13 total tackles (8 solo) against the Cardinals in a losing effort on 88% usage. Cody Barton was not effective with only one total tackle as Bobby Wagner did end up suiting up for the game despite an ankle injury, relegating the rookie to minimal snaps. Will Compton was very solid for owners who were able to get him into their lineup. The former Redskin starter turned in 12 total tackles (10 solo) against the Chargers on every down duty.

David Mayo / Deone Bucannon NYG LB – 3-4 ILB     Value: LB2 – LB3

Alec Ogletree hasn’t exactly been a huge fantasy commodity this year but he does occupy high volume snaps for the Giants. So when he left the game against the Redskins in week 16 with a back injury, his replacement needs to be noted. David Mayo likely elevates to full-time snaps if Ogletree fails to suit up against the Eagles in week 17. He logged 10 total tackles on 100% usage in week 16. Former Cardinal Deone Bucannon took the majority (76%) of the other ILB snaps and turned in 7 total tackles in Ogletree’s stead. The Eagles are still playing to get into the playoffs so don’t expect them to take their foot off of the gas. Mayo is the higher value play but is also more likely to be owned. Neither has much for dynasty appeal.

Jalen Reeves-Maybin DET LB – 4-3 WLB     Value: LB2 – LB3

Injuries are the story here for the Detroit Lions LB corps. Jarrad Davis (knee, ankle) and Christian Jones (shoulder) are on injured reserve and rookie Jahlani Tavai missed the majority of week 16 against the Broncos with a shoulder injury. Reeves-Maybin, a third-year player out of Tennessee, ended up leading all Lions linebackers in both snaps (92%) and tackles (9 total). If the Packers are still playing for a first-round bye in Detroit where they play in week 17, you can expect an aggressive gameplan that should bode well for fantasy owners looking to capitalize. Reeves-Maybin is a low-cost option with a high floor this week. The Lions seem intent on using other options when healthy so while his dynasty value isn’t non-existent, I’m not grabbing him for a play next year.

AJ Klein NOS LB – 4-3 SLB     Value: LB2 – LB3

One of the better IDP matchups this year has been the LB corps that is opposing the Panthers. With their offense (both run and pass) effectively funneled through one guy, Christian McCaffrey, the Panthers are largely guaranteeing volume that you just can’t get with any other matchup in the NFL right now. For example, the Colts faced the Panthers in week 17 and collected 30 total tackles and an interception across their three linebackers. AJ Klein hasn’t really been much of an IDP option this year due to Alex Anzalone, Kiko Alonso and battling a knee issue earlier in the year. However, with both Anzalone and Alonso out with injury and Klein healthy, the former Panther has been given snap counts of 89% and 100% over his last two games. In those games, Klein has delivered 9 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and a PD. Give him a look against the Panthers where I expect that sack upside to remain as high as ever but tackle numbers are likely to be high.

Defensive Lineman Plays

Despite playing in week 15 and practicing in full all week, Akiem Hicks missed week 16 against the Chiefs. It’s clear that he isn’t completely healthy from his elbow injury that landed him on injured reserve earlier in the year. Vic Beasley Jr rewarded owners that were able to get him into their lineups with 3 total tackles and a sack against the Jaguars on 90% usage.

Trey Hendrickson NOS DE – 4-3 DE     Value: DL2

This is a matchup play. The Saints visit the Panthers in week 17 with a first-round bye hanging in the balance. The Panthers are rolling out third-round rookie Will Grier at quarterback who took five sacks in week 16 against the Colts. I expect this one to be ugly for the Panthers. Cameron Jordan should be universally owned and is a great pick for DL1 status this week but his running mate Trey Hendrickson is a sneaky play to grab a sack and maybe another splash play. Hendrickson’s usage was a season-high 65% last week against the Titans.

49ers pass rush SFO DL – 4-3 DL     Value: DL2

Fantasy aside, I can’t wait for the Seattle-San Francisco game in week 17. Huge playoffs implications for two good teams that are trying to shake a few setbacks that they’ve suffered recently. Seattle is entering the contest struggling with health. With Chris Carson, Rashaad Penny and CJ Prosise all done for the year, the Seahawks are either rolling with Travis Homer at running back or signing someone off the street. Rumor has it that someone of the street might be Marshawn Lynch. On top of that, left tackle Duane Brown is out with a knee injury as well. All of that adds up to some potential pass protection struggles and maybe an inability to lean on the running game as much as Seattle has in the past. Those injuries resulted in Seattle losing to Arizona in week 16. It might be the reason that week 17 that goes awry for them as well. I’m getting my 49ers into the lineup on the defensive line. Nick Bosa is at the top of that list for sure followed by Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner.

Defensive Back Plays

With 10 total tackles (8 solo) against the Ravens, Damarious Randall was the top play of last week’s recommendations. Randall continues to get top billing in the Browns secondary and should remain a solid option this week as well. His running mate, Sheldrick Redwine, logged 5 total tackles on 85% usage. Sam Beal was solid with 6 total tackles on 93% usage against the Redskins. His running mate DeAndre Baker was the stream play of the week with 10 total tackles. Finally, the Houston Texans secondary did deliver with 4 INTs of Jameis Winston. Justin Reid (4 solo tackles, 1 INT, 1 fumble recovery) and Bradley Roby (4 solo tackles, 2 PDs, 1 pick six) were the top options for splash plays. Tashaun Gipson was only respectable with 5 solo tackles.

Trey Marshall DEN SS – 3-4 SS     Value: DB2 – DB3

With Kareem Jackson suspended for Week 16 and 17 stemming from a DUI arrest, undrafted sophomore Trey Marshall draws into the starting lineup. The former Seminole played every down and logged an impressive 9 total tackles in the contest, tied for the most in the game. The Raiders are a decent matchup for Broncos safeties in week 17. Marshall is virtually unowned and should go cheaply in all formats. If you’ve been counting on Jackson or otherwise have a hole in your secondary, Marshall is an easy plug-and-play option.

Chauncey Gardner-Thompson NOS S – 4-3 SS     Value: DB2 (Dynasty stash)

A rookie fourth-round pick out of Florida, Chauncey Gardner-Thompson has been a solid addition to an already talented squad on defense. He has received third safety snaps for the majority of the year and has recently filled in at strong safety for Vonn Bell who is nursing a knee injury. Over his last two games, Gardner-Thompson has logged 16 total tackles, 1 PD, 1 fumble forced and 1 fumble recovered. Unless Bell manages to get back into the lineup, I like that trend for the rookie against the Panthers in week 17. Don’t be shy about hanging onto this guy for dynasty purposes either. 2019 is Vonn Bell’s walk year and the starting strong safety job might be up for grabs next year.

Marcell Harris SFO S – 4-3 SS     Value: DB2 – DB3

Jaquiski Tartt continues to miss time with a rib injury so 2018 sixth-round pick Marcell Harris continues to draw starts. Harris has garnered full-time duty in Tartt’s stead and has managed 23 total tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 5 PDs over his last four games. Not bad numbers. On top of that, the matchup against the Seahawks has some potential to be a high volume contest with Seattle’s ability to run the ball in question. Harris has a decent floor of double-digit fantasy production achieved in every week since his promotion. Pick him up for minimal cost and a spot start but I’m not expecting him to hang onto the starting job for next year as Tartt is the clear starter when healthy and is signed through 2020.

IDP free agent report: Week 16

In many leagues, week 16 is the championship week. If you are still playing meaningful fantasy football at this point in the season, congratulations to you. Week 16 can be difficult to navigate. Teams that are clearly out of the running tend to run young players with higher snap counts than the usual starters which can mess with your starting lineup if you are counting on good players from weaker teams. As such, if given a decision between two players that you view as equivalent, I’m starting the player who has something to play for to give me the extra insurance that I’m going to get the points that I am counting on. Weather also can play a factor as we saw in Kansas City where Denver went from prince to pauper almost overnight.

Linebacker Plays

With Denzel Perryman returning to the lineup for the Chargers after a one-game team suspension, Drue Tranquill returned to IDP purgatory with all of the other Chargers LBs. Tranquill received 55% of the snaps against Minnesota and turned in 4 total tackles. Thomas Davis was the only Chargers LB to out snap him at 83%. I’d stay away from the Chargers LB corps until you are given a reason to buy back in. Craig Robertson gave way to a returning AJ Klein in the Saints lineup. Those that were able to get Klein in over Robertson were treated to 6 total tackles and a half sack in a blowout win for the Saints. Finally, Danny Trevathan did not suit up despite rumblings that he might. In fact, he didn’t even practice at all over the course of the week. I think that Trevathan likely doesn’t play this season given that the Bears are officially eliminated. Nick Kwiatkoski played every snap and scored 5 total tackles, a sack and a PD against the Packers. Kevin Pierre-Louis elevated to 80% of the snaps and scored a respectable 5 solo tackles.

Will Compton OAK LB – 4-3 MLB     Value: LB2 – LB3

The Raiders are a bit of the dumpster fire right now on defense and the adjustments made by the coaching staff signify just how unhappy they have been with the results so far. The most impactful change to the defense from an IDP perspective was career reserve LB Will Compton, a guy who was a street free agent until week 8, being elevated to full-time MLB. Compton played every snap for the Raiders against the Jaguars, logging 9 total tackles. Compton is far from elite talent but full-time linebackers are hard to find these days. He is virtually unowned and the asking price should be fairly low. The Raiders visit the Chargers in week 16. The Chargers are offering an average of over 17 fantasy points per game in their last three games to full-time LBs. In week 10, Tahir Whitehead logged 22 fantasy points against the Chargers in Oakland. Compton should be a priority add for your team if you are counting on Whitehead or if you have any holes in your LB corps.

KJ Wright / Cody Barton SEA LB – 4-3 OLB     Value: LB2 – LB3 (dynasty stash)

A few things are playing into this call. First off, Mychal Kendricks has missed the last two Seahawks games with a hamstring injury that I expect to keep him out of week 16 against the Cardinals. Second, Bobby Wagner suffered an ankle injury that kept him out of the fourth quarter of Seattle’s Week 15 win over the Panthers. While the majority of reports suggest that Wagner will play, I’d bet that Pete Carroll is cautious with his start linebacker so close to the postseason. Don’t be surprised if Wagner doesn’t play every snap, especially if Seattle gets up early. Finally, the Seahawks are rolling three linebackers over 80% usage in their last two games with Cody Barton being the primary beneficiary. With third safety Quandre Diggs likely out of week 16’s contest with an ankle injury, look for more base defense to continue to be the theme for the Seahawks. The Cardinals seem to be finding their identity as a running team as of late so I think that plays into a few more tackles for the Seattle LBs. Barton is a rookie third-round pick this year out of Utah that seems to be finding some traction in the starting lineup. KJ Wright is signed through 2020 but is a decent cap savings to Seattle if he is cut. Barton may be the heir apparent in 2021 or sooner.

Jahlani Tavai DET LB – 4-3 MLB     Value: LB2 – LB3 (dynasty stash)

On Saturday, the Lions ended Jarrad Davis’ season by placing him on injured reserve with ankle and knee injuries. Rookie second-round pick Jahlani Tavai stepped in to start at middle linebacker in week 15 against the Buccaneers, playing 93% of the snaps to lead all Lions LBs. His 5 total tackles and an interception were a fine showing to his first look at starter snaps. It’s worth noting that Christian Jones also missed the contest with a shoulder injury but is likely to be back in week 16. I expect his return to impact Jalen Reeves-Maybin more so than Tavai however. Week 16 brings a matchup against the Broncos in Denver. While the matchup isn’t the best, Tavai should have high volume snaps in the matchup. Whether he’s trying out for an outside linebacker role or an eventual takeover of Davis down the road, the Lions need to try to figure out what they have in the youngster out of Hawaii.

Defensive Lineman Plays

Vinny Curry disappointed owners with his output against the Redskins as the reserve DE did increase his snap count significantly to 70% with Derek Barnett out with an ankle injury but only posted 2 solo tackles. Deeper league option Rasheem Green rewarded owners with 2 solo tackles and a sack on 63% usage with both Jadeveon Clowney and Ezekiel Ansah out with injury.

Akiem Hicks CHI DE – 3-4 DE     Value: DL2

I am a big believer in defensive linemen that can make tackles in the running game as well as offer me some sack upside. Akiem Hicks is a guy that can do both. Activated from injured reserve in week 15, the former Saint logged 4 solo tackles on 61% usage. He showed no ill effects from the elbow injury that cost him the previous 8 games. Hicks and the Bears host the Chiefs in week 16. If I’m being honest, it’s not a great matchup from a run defense point of view but the Hicks still has sack and big-play upside regardless of matchup. I’d nab him if I was struggling for options.

Vic Beasley Jr ATL DE – 4-3 DE     Value: DL1 – DL2

Don’t look now but the Falcons might be showing out to be the team that many thought they’d be much earlier in the season. While it’s too late for Atlanta’s playoff hopes, players are always being evaluated and they are playing for 2020 jobs. Vic Beasley falls squarely into that category. Once thought of as the next great Falcon pass rusher after a 15.5 sack campaign in 2016, Vic Beasley has struggled mightily at times. He is now playing out his fifth-year option for the Falcons and will be an unrestricted free agent next year. The good news for Beasley is that he has more sacks now (7) than each of his previous two seasons and is coming off of three sacks in his last two games. The Jaguars visit Atlanta in week 16 and aren’t the pinnacle of pass protection in the league with an average of three sacks per game allowed in their last four games. The Falcons are historically a better team at home so I’m trying to ride the hot hand in Beasley.

Defensive Back Plays

Jeff Heath returned to the lineup for the Cowboys, rendering the Darian Thompson recommendation a bad one. Heath is not a good source of tackles most games whereas Thompson proved to be so there was a net loss of IDP opportunity with Heath back in the starting lineup. Damontae Kazee was solid in an upset win over the 49ers with 7 total tackles on 98% usage. Ricardo Allen was not good in the same contest with 2 total tackles on 78% usage. Finally, both Tracy Walker (7 total tackles, PD) and Tavon Wilson (6 solo tackles) were serviceable against the Buccaneers on 100% and 92% usage respectively. Honestly, given the matchup, I expected more but I’ll take the double-digit fantasy outputs.

Sam Beal NYG CB – 3-4 CB     Value: DB2 – DB3

While not exactly a rookie corner rule application, Sam Beal might as well be. After the Giants waived starting corner Janoris Jenkins due to offensive language he used in an altercation with a fan on social media, Sam Beal was tabbed for starting duty. The undrafted second-year pro turned in a team-high 11 total tackles to go with a PD. Beal is not top CB material and Terry McLaurin probably gives him plenty of tackle opportunity as well when the Giants visit the Redskins in week 16. I’m not overthinking this. Beal has played every snap but one in the last two Giants games and has 18 total tackles during that time.

Texans Secondary HOU DB – 3-4 CB/S     Value: DB2 – DB3

Big play hunters who are willing to gamble should pay attention to this one. The Texans visit the Buccaneers in week 16. Jameis Winston is leading the NFL in the following categories: Attempts, yards and interceptions. He is second behind Lamar Jackson in touchdown passes. The Buccaneers are bottom five in rushing yards per game. All of this adds up to Winston doing in week 16 what he has done all season; throw it around the field. Justin Reid, Tashaun Gipson and Bradley Roby would be my recommendations in order of preference for both tackles and interception upside given the opponent in town and their usage over the past few games.

Sheldrick Redwine / Damarious Randall CLE S – 4-3 S     Value: DB2 – DB3

While I was a week too premature on him when I recommended him earlier this season, Sheldrick Redwine has 22 total tackles and 2 PDs over his last three games where he has been a virtual every-down player for Cleveland. Damarious Randall has been in and out of the Browns’ lineup this season but is coming off of an 8 total tackle effort against the Cardinals on every down usage in week 15. This is a simple matchup play for would-be IDP owners. The Ravens visit the Browns in week 16 looking to secure the AFC. Baltimore is the hottest team in the league on offense and has been exceptional on defense as well. I expect plenty of work for the Browns’ secondary as both passes and runs make it to the second level.

IDP Free Agent Report: Week 15

With one week into the fantasy playoffs, owners may start to notice a trend of increased players to the injured reserve. This is usually because teams tend to start getting mathematically eliminated around this time and players/teams don’t want to continue risking further injury battling through smaller, cumulative issues. This is why depth is important. The offensive side of the ball lost a handful of impact players this week and the team (both fantasy and NFL) that can overcome their injury situation will likely be the one that owns the championship at the end. Unfortunately, back-filling those positions can be difficult around this time of year.

Unfortunately, back-filling those positions can be difficult around this time of year.

Linebacker Plays

Donald Payne was easily the top dog of recommendations last week with 16 total tackles on full-time usage against the Chargers. It’s worth mentioning that the weakside linebacker snaps were split between Quincy Williams and Leon Jacobs in that same game. Mack Wilson had a solid game against the Bengals with 6 total tackles and a PD on 100% usage as well. While not eye-popping both pass-rushing Smiths for Green Bay pick up splash plays for owners that got them into their lineup last week. Za’Darius Smith logged 3 solo tackles and a forced fumble whereas Preston Smith scored 2 solo tackles and a sack against Washington

Danny Trevathan / Nick Kwiatkoski / Kevin Pierre-Louis CHI LB – 3-4 ILB     Value: LB1 – LB3

In an unfortunate turn, Roquan Smith suffered a season-ending pectoral injury against Dallas on Thursday early in the game. Awful news for Roquan and awful news of the fantasy owners who were left with only two total tackles before their LB1 exited the game in a week where it’s do-or-die. On top of that, if you were able to survive this week in spite of that production, you now need another option at LB. Nick Kwiatkoski remains a priority add if he hasn’t been added already. The fourth-year man out of West Virginia is averaging over 14 fantasy points per game since taking over for Danny Trevathan. Speaking of Danny Trevathan, I’m reading rumblings that he might take a run at returning soon. That is really surprising to me given how ugly that elbow injury looked in week 10. I didn’t think we’d see him again this year. Watch the practice reports and if Trevathan returns, snap him up. If not, former Seahawk draft pick Kevin Pierre-Louis figures to step into a fairly significant role. The Bears heavily use 2 ILBs so Pierre-Louis is a good play in very deep leagues. The Packers in week 15 are a middle of the road matchup but the volume will be high as it usually is for Bears ILBs.

Craig Robertson NOS LB – 4-3 WLB     Value: LB2 – LB3

Unfortunately for the Saints defense, injuries are sorting out the IDP production split that would-be owners have had to navigate to this point in the season. Both AJ Klein (knee) and Kiko Alonso (thigh) missed week 14 against the 49ers, leaving Demario Davis and Craig Robertson to carry full-time duty. While Davis is likely fully owned due to his usage, Robertson was a reserve linebacker that is unlikely to be owned in any league. Robertson played every snap against the 49ers, logging 8 total tackles and an interception. While looking like an attractive add given the ownership percentage and likely fetching price, Robertson is back to the scrap heap once either Klein or Alonso gets healthy. Watch the injury reports and don’t spend much here given the risk. The run-heavy Colts are an above-average matchup for a Saints LB this week.

Drue Tranquill LAC LB – 4-3 MLB     Value: LB2 – LB3

A recommendation for a few weeks ago that was derailed due to injury seems to be back on track is Drue Tranquill. The Chargers LB corps seems to be a hot mess every year for the past few years and this year is no exception. For what its worth, Tranquill was given the lion’s share of the snaps in week 14 against the Jaguars with 83%. The next highest usage was Thomas Davis at 47%. With that usage, Tranquill turned in 8 total tackles (7 solo). The Vikings in week 15 appear to be an above-average matchup for the fourth round rookie but with Denzel Perryman back from a team imposed one game exile, it remains to be seen if the Chargers continue to utilize Tranquill above 75% as they have since week 10.

Defensive Lineman Plays

Last week, I advocated Carlos Dunlap‘s ownership percentage to increase as he seemed to be overcoming his injury woes and he remains a high-volume end with a very good tackle floor. 5 solo tackles and 2 PDs on 88% would suggest that was a good call. That said, the poor performances of Clelin Ferrell (1 solo tackle, 47% usage) and Maxx Crosby (2 solo tackles, 66% usage) against Tennessee knock me back down to just above “I have no clue” level.

Seahawks Pass Rush SEA DL – 4-3 DL     Value: DL2

The Seahawks aren’t exactly boasting a plethora of sacks from one single source this year. In fact, the team lead for sacks is only three. That said, the matchup is the driver here. The Seahawks are reeling from a critical division loss to the Rams in week 14 and need to get back on track against the Panthers. Meanwhile, Carolina is reeling. They’ve lost five games in a row and have fired their head coach. Over those five games, the Panthers have given up 24 sacks, the most in the league over that time period. Jadeveon Clowney is fighting through a core muscle injury and Ziggy Ansah is bothered by a neck problem but if I have a Seattle pass rusher, I’m finding a way to use them despite less than optimal production over the last few weeks, the matchup is as good as it gets. Jarran Reed for a defensive tackle and Rasheem Green if either of Clowney or Ansah can’t go would be good deeper league options.

Darian Thompson DAL S – 4-3 SS     Value: DB2 – DB3

Darian Thompson was mentioned in this column a few weeks ago when Jeff Heath first missed time. Now that Heath’s Shoulder has seen him sidelined again, former Giant Darian Thompson once again in seeing full time snaps for the Cowboys. Coming off of a 9 total tackles, 1 sack performance against the Bears and slated for the suddenly resurgent Rams in week 15, Thompson is primed for another decent tackle output. Watch the injury report to ensure that Heath remains out but otherwise, I’d deploy Thompson as a DB2/DB3.

Defensive Back Plays

Both Chuck Clark (6 total tackles, 1 PD on 97% usage) and Micah Hyde (7 total tackles on 97% usage) had a remarkably similar game. Both were solid but unspectacular and were overshadowed by their flashier safety partner in Earl Thomas and Jordan Poyer. Andrew Wingard was the lone miss from last week’s recommendations. Ronnie Harrison did miss another game with a concussion that he is now cleared from but Wingard did not receive full-time snaps. He split with Marcus Gilchrist (46-17) and turned in 4 total tackles. While not awful, fantasy owners hoped for more after 16 points the week before.

Tracy Walker / Tavon Wilson DET S – 4-3 FS/SS     Value: DB1

Both Tracy Walker and Tavon Wilson are very under-owned for their production. Walker is coming off of a knee injury that has hampered his output for four weeks whereas Wilson was a reserve player before Quandre Diggs was traded to Seattle. If you need confirmation that these guys are the play this week, consider this. Both Walker (13 total tackles on 94% usage) and Wilson (11 total tackles on 100% usage) were DB1s this week in tackle-heavy and balanced scoring leagues. The Lions’ week 15 opponent is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The two safeties who faced them in week 14 were also DB1s for the week in Khari Willis (11 total tackles on 87% usage) and Malik Hooker (10 total tackles, 1 INT on 100% usage). Tampa Bay QB Jameis Winston has an injured thumb but is expected to continue to play which should provide second-to-none big-play upside as Winston is currently leading the league with 23 INT, seven more than the next closest QB.

Ricardo Allen / Damantae Kazee ATL S – 4-3 FS/SS     Value: DB2 – DB3

This one is a straight matchup play as Atlanta visits San Francisco in week 15. The Saints and 49ers put up one of the all-time best games as far as a shootout goes in week 14 and if Atlanta’s offense can hang with the 49ers for a least a bit of the game, you might see some of the big numbers that IDPs like Vonn Bell posted. Ricardo Allen is closer to a DB2/DB3 already with Kazee being more of a matchup play right now. Give Atlanta’s safeties a look with San Francisco giving out some gaudy numbers to opposing safeties as of late, over 22 fantasy points per game average over their last 5 games to the strong safety to be exact.

IDP free agent report: Week 14

What a weird week of football leading into the fantasy playoffs. Hopefully, your team is still playing for something at this stage of the game. If the event that you are out of the running in your dynasty league, I’ll do my best to offer up a couple options for keeper purposes as they pop up. For the rest of you with games to win, please keep in mind two things. One, as carefully as you may have planned your playoff schedule, nothing matters unless you win your week. Maximize your points to ensure that you play another week. Two, weather becomes a huge factor in games at this time of year. The Ravens-49ers game and the Chiefs-Raiders were prime examples of this. Know the weather conditions of the games in which your key players play to maximize your chances of victory. Best of luck to you going forward.

Linebacker Plays

Last week was a hit-or-miss week in an admittedly weak lineup for recommendations. Sean Lee was huge for owners that were able to plug him into their lineups. Remaining in a larger role (85%) due to Leighton Vander Esch’s neck injury, Lee posted 12 total tackles against the Bills on Thanksgiving. Quincy Williams at least posted a high usage number at 96% but owners expected more than the 3 total tackles that he posted. The spotlight landed on another Jaguars’ LB that will be mentioned later. Germaine Pratt wasn’t mentioned as a great option for this past week but rather as a dynasty stash. For what it’s worth, he scored 5 total tackles on 47% usage against the Jets in the Bengals first win this year. HE has the second most utilized Bengal LB behind Nick Vigil. Finally, Nigel Bradham led the Eagles LBs in scoring but unfortunately for fantasy owners, that only amounted to 4 total tackles and a PD. I did warn you that the matchup this week was poor but his usage was high at 96% which should give owners confidence to roll with him as the only real IDP-worthy Eagle LB. Unfortunately, the pickings remain slim deep into the year.

Donald Payne JAC LB – 4-3 MLB     Value: LB1 – LB2

MLB Myles Jack was out on Sunday due to a knee injury. Third-year UDFA Donald Payne received the start in his stead and posted a monstrous line of 13 total tackles and a sack on 99% usage against the Buccaneers to finish the week as a surprise member of the LB1 club. Full disclosure, Myles Jack had practiced, albeit in a limited fashion, on Friday and was listed as questionable before ultimately being scratched on Sunday. Whatever knee ailment is bothering him, he can’t be far away from the lineup once again. That said, whether you count on Jack for fantasy points or not, Payne offers huge upside in the event that Jack fails to suit up again. The Chargers visit the Jaguars in week 14. Watch the injury report on this one. If Jack is returning to the Jaguars’ lineup, cut Payne loose.

Mack Wilson CLE LB – 4-3 WLB     Value: LB2 – LB3 (dynasty stash)

Mack Wilson is coming off of the best tackle total of his young career with 8 total tackles and a forced fumble on 97% usage against the Steelers. Wilson has been almost an every-down player for the Browns in the wake of Christian Kirksey’s season-ending chest injury but he hasn’t returned as many big games as fantasy owners would have liked. The Bengals are fresh off of their first win of the season with long-time pivot Andy Dalton back at the controls after a brief benching and visit the Browns in week 14. I’m not saying that this is a great matchup but the Cardinals and Ravens in weeks 15 and 16 are. James Burgess put up 9 total tackles against the Bengals this past week as week so it can be done. The rookie is a LB3/flex option down the stretch with some tackle upside given his usage. On top of that, Joe Schobert is a free agent after this year and may not resign. Christian Kirksey likely remains on the team as he is in the middle of a hefty contract. Fulltime replacement of Schobert’s role would be a big deal for would-be fantasy owners.

Packers Pass rushers LB – 3-4 OLB     Value: LB2 – LB3 (big play)

I’ve been stashing the Green Bay defense for a few weeks looking forward to this matchup. Green Bay hosting Washington at Lambeau Field in December. A rookie QB at the controls for the Redskins playing behind a line that has allowed 14 sacks over Washington’s last three games after their bye week. Whichever Smith you decide to roll with here, Preston or Za’darius, both offer above-average sack upside with 10.5 sacks for Preston and 10 sacks for Za’darius, and around an average of 3.5 tackles per game for each. If pressed to make a choice, I’d take Preston over Za’darius simply due to one or two more splash plays in his resume. Either makes a fine choice for a gamble plays and the upside goes even higher, the more your league values big plays.

Defensive Lineman Plays

I was correct in a few choices that I made last week but missed on a few more. Calling a Derek Barnett breakout was a nice feather in the cap with the third-year pro scoring six solo tackles and a sack on 69% usage against Miami, registering his best game of the year. That said, Fletcher Cox‘s 2 total tackles and half sack and Brandon Graham‘s 2 total tackle efforts left fantasy owners wanting more. Part-timer Vinny Curry was the other Eagle to nab a sack in that contest. The Lions I mentioned were also hit-and-miss. The Bears were remarkably better in protection on Thanksgiving than in previous weeks. Damon Harrison missed the contest due to a knee injury but Trey Flowers returned to the lineup to score 3 solo tackles and a sack on 58% usage.

Carlos Dunlap CIN DE – 4-3 DE     Value: DL1 – DL2

While Carlos Dunlap is likely to be owned in almost every dynasty format, his year has left a lot to be desired. Over the first ten weeks of the season, Dunlap was struggling with injury and had as many sacks as he had completely statless games (1). But over his last three games, Dunlap has piled up 19 total tackles, 4.5 sacks and 2 PDs including 3 sacks against the Jets last week. The Browns are no Jets team but they are coming off a game where they allowed 5 sacks to Pittsburgh. Dunlap is a high volume end and decent tackler in run defense as well which helps his case of ownership and starting duty. The Patriots in week 15 aren’t a good matchup but the Dolphins in week 16 are among the best. Dunlap should be owned and started in all formats now that he appears to be healthy.

Clelin Ferrell/Maxx Crosby OAK DE – 4-3 DE     Value: DL1 – DL2

Ryan Tannehill has done a lot of good things to help the Tennessee Titans but one thing that hasn’t really improved is the pass protection. Tennessee remains among the league lead for sacks allowed with over 4 per game. What those stats don’t tell you is that they are even worse on the road with an average of 5 sacks per game. On the road is exactly where the Titans find themselves against Oakland in week 14. Ferrell and Crosby are high-volume ends that will be able to nab a tackle or two to provide a decent floor while owners are hoping for the big play. Neither are universally owned despite big games within the last three weeks. Give either a shot if you are streaming or otherwise have a hole on the defensive line.

Defensive Back Plays

Both Adrian Phillips and Derwin James returned to action for the Chargers after lengthy periods out with injury. James was used heavily at 98% compared to Phillips’ 40% usage but both registered the exact same statline, 4 total tackles. A Drew Lock-led Broncos squad might not be the best barometer of either’s value going forward but it was nice to see James take a full load of snaps. Jaquiski Tartt logged only 3 solo tackles but missed a large portion of the game due to injury. He logged only 58% of the snaps. Deeper league play Julian Love played every snap but two in relief of injured free safety Jabrill Peppers. The rookie delivered a solid 7 total tackles and a forced fumble against the Packers.

Andrew Wingard JAC S – 4-3 S     Value: DB2 – DB3

With starting safety Ronnie Harrison out with a concussion, UDFA Andrew Wingard stepped in for his first ever NFL start against the Buccaneers. The Wyoming product logged 6 solo tackles, a sack and a forced fumble on 75% usage. The Chargers visit Jacksonville in week 14 are a very good matchup for opposing safeties with seven of eight starting safeties finishing with double-digit fantasy points. As long as Harrison remains out, Wingard is a decent play for a DB3/flex stream option.

Chuck Clark BAL S – 3-4 SS     Value: DB2 – DB3

2017 sixth-round pick Chuck Clark has been solid but unspectacular in his coverage of the Ravens’ strong safety position since Tony Jefferson went down with a season-ending injury. His worst game since taking over was his first game starting where he scored three solo tackles against the Bengals. His best game was this past week against the 49ers where he scored 7 total tackles, a forced fumble and a sack on full-time usage. With the Bills hosting the Ravens in week 14, I think a similar game to this week could be in store. Top scoring safeties has averaged 13.5 fantasy points against the Bills over their last five games. Give Clark a look as he is very under-owned for his floor production.

Micah Hyde BUF S – 4-3 FS     Value: DB2 – DB3

Jordan Poyer is likely the first name to come to mind for IDP production from the Buffalo secondary but while free safeties are generally not the first place to look for safety production, they have thrived against the Ravens this year. Over Baltimore’s last five games, true free safeties have logged a gaudy 16.7 fantasy points per game average. Hyde has a decent tackle floor as he averages over 4 total tackles per game this season with a sprinkling of splash plays here and there. Hyde is a fairly safe play with the Ravens visiting the Bills in week 14.  With the Steelers and Patriots in the following weeks, I might consider hanging onto him.

IDP free agent report: Week 13

It’s getting to be crunch time in fantasy as most leagues will conclude their regular season with week 13. The good news? Week 13 is the first week with no NFL teams on bye since week 3. The bad news? Three games on Thanksgiving, while fun to watch, might play wreak havoc on your roster if you are struggling with injury. Saints, Falcons, Bills and the teams synonymous with Thanksgiving, the Lions and Cowboys, all play on Thursday.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

It’s getting to be crunch time in fantasy as most leagues will conclude their regular season with week 13. The good news? Week 13 is the first week with no NFL teams on bye since week 3. The bad news? Three games on Thanksgiving, while fun to watch, might play wreak havoc on your roster if you are struggling with injury. Saints, Falcons, Bills and the teams synonymous with Thanksgiving, the Lions and Cowboys, all play on Thursday.

If you are still playing meaningful fantasy games but aren’t locked into a playoff spot, understanding your position is critical. Failure to win any of the next four games win result in you falling short of your goal of a championship. Therefore, you need to play as though your fantasy life depends on it. Because it does. Players that suffer injuries that will see more than a few weeks recovery might be worth considering a drop if you need the roster space. Strength of schedule matters. Weather matters. Do your homework to give yourself the maximum chance to win. For those whose season is over, I’ll try to add in a couple keeper league nuggets to give you the best chance to kick off the 2020 season in the right direction.

Linebacker Plays

Neville Hewitt led a decent linebacker outing from last week’s recommendation. Hewitt logged 7 total tackles and a PD against the Raiders while playing every snap but one. The Jaguars took one last kick at me by playing Quincy Williams every snap over Najeh Goode. Williams logged 6 total tackles on every down usage. Nate Gerry logged 6 total tackles, a half sack, a PD and fumble recovery on 54% usage against the Seahawks. His usage took a bit of a hit due to the return of a player the be mentioned later in the article. Kiko Alonso continued his higher usage at 62% and logged 5 total tackles against the Panthers.

Nigel Bradham PHI LB – 4-3 WLB     Value: LB2

In week 12 against the Seahawks, Nigel Bradham returned from an ankle injury that kept him out of action for five weeks. Bradham played every snap and turned in 9 total tackles. Other Eagles LBs played significantly less snaps with Nate Gerry playing only 54% and Kamu Gruger-Hill playing 34%. Admittedly, the Dolphins, Giants and Redskins throughout the next three weeks aren’t awe-inspiring matchups but the Cowboys on fantasy superbowl week 16 is. If the usage continues this way, Bradham will be the only Eagle LB that is startable regardless.

Sean Lee DAL LB – 4-3 WLB     Value: LB2 – LB3

Leighton Vander Esch’s neck has become problematic for him again. Those who have followed Vander Esch’s career back to when he was a Boise State Bronco know that any neck issues for Vander Esch are a problem. While the Cowboys coaching staff have been quick to acknowledge that the conditions isn’t career-threatening, it sounds serious enough that I’d be surprised if it is only a one-week thing for the sophomore. Veteran Sean Lee has drawn between 70% and 85% of the snaps with Vander Esch out of the lineup, scoring an average of 16 fantasy points per game over those games. The Bills in week 13 haven’t always carried two fantasy LBs over the course of the year but if you were counting on Vander Esch as an every-week starter, you might be pot-committed on a Dallas LB down the stretch. The Cowboys schedule is Bills, Bears, Rams and Eagles to round out the fantasy season.

Quincy Williams JAC LB – 4-3 WLB     Value: LB3

As much as I’m tired of the Jaguars making a fool of me, the gameplan was for Williams to play in week 12. He was the only Jaguars LB to play every snap. Even Myles Jack (87%) didn’t get used as heavily as Williams did although Jack outscored Williams seven tackles to six. The Jaguars actually have a really good schedule for opposing LBs down the stretch with the Buccaneers, Chargers, Raiders and Falcons to round out the fantasy regular season. Understand that Williams carries a mammoth amount of risk as the coaching staff has shown a willingness to bench him a few times in the past but very few linebackers are going to see 100% of a team’s snaps and still be a free agent at this stage in the season.

Germiane Pratt CIN LB – 4-3 MLB     Value: LB3 – flex (dynasty stash)

Since Preston Brown was released, Germaine Pratt’s usage has been over 60% in two successive games and the 2019 third-round pick has amassed 14 total tackles over that time period. Nick Vigil is still the highest volume Bengal LB this year but it is worth mentioning that 2019 is Vigil’s walk year and he may not be a Bengal in 2020. Pratt is one of a handful of young LBs that could pick up the mantle if that happens and based on current snap counts, should be the best bet. The Jets, Browns, Patriots and Dolphins round out the Bengals schedule down the stretch. The Patriots are an obvious plus matchup for opposing LBs but don’t sleep on the Jets matchup either if New York continues to roll as they have lately.

Defensive Lineman Plays

The Tennessee Titans, league-worst in pass protection entering week 12, did a commendable job in keeping Ryan Tannehill upright, allowing only a single sack. That sack went to Yannick Ngakoue, who added two solo tackles, a PD, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, no other Jaguars defensive lineman recorded any stats of note. Chad Thomas logged 68% of the Browns’ snaps against the Dolphins and scored 5 solo tackles. Olivier Vernon was unfortunately unable to play due to a knee injury despite his head coach’s estimation that he’d play earlier in the week. It’s worth noting that Sheldon Richardson was dominant in that game with 5 total tackles, 2 sacks, a PD and a forced fumble. Browns’ DLs might be a decent hold as well with a third-string QB potentially starting in Pittsburgh in week 13 and a beleaguered Bengals squad visiting Cleveland in week 14.

Eagles pass rush PHI DL – 4-3 DL     Value: DL1 – DL2

Chasing the Dolphins around for the matchup isn’t exactly the hard-hitting deep analysis that you might expect but it has been an effective strategy for streamers. As of the end of week 12, the Dolphins have allowed the most sacks in the NFL at 4.2 sacks allowed per game. Over their last three games against 4-3 defenses, they have allowed 14 sacks, 10 of which went to the defensive line. I like those odds for the Eagles who face the Dolphins in week 13. In order of preference, Brandon Graham would be my top choice but he is also most likely to be owned. Derek Barnett has high usage but hasn’t produced stats and might be a breakout candidate who could be had cheap. Finally, Fletcher Cox might be a sneaky play as the interior of Miami has been exploitable with 6 of those 10 sacks going to interior linemen.

Lions pass rush DET DL – 4-3 DL     Value: DL1 – DL2

Similar to the Dolphins, the Bears have been a fantasy goldmine over the past few weeks. Ignoring the Giants’ abysmal pass rush in week 12, opposing defensive lines have scored over 30 fantasy points per game against the Bears in the month of November, including a week 10 Lions loss to the Bears that saw Damon Harrison and Trey Flowers score well. With Trey Flowers likely out with a concussion for Thanksgiving, a returning Romeo Okwara should play a big role along with Damon Harrison and A’Shawn Robinson.

Defensive Back Plays

Ricardo Allen was the lone standout from last week’s recommendations with a solid 9 total tackle, 1 PD performance on 91% usage against the Buccaneers. Darian Thompson‘s output was hampered by a quick return from injury by Jeff Heath and Sheldrick Redwine only scored 3 total tackles due to the Browns playing safety-by-committee using cornerbacks. Redwine logged only 40% of the snaps against the Dolphins. Here’s to hoping for a better showing in week 13.

Derwin James/Adrian Phillips LAC S – 4-3 SS     Value: DB1 – DB2

Starting off strong, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn discussed that two of his safeties that have missed significant time due to injury may be available as early as this week against Denver. Adrian Phillips hasn’t played since week 2 where he suffered a broken arm. A stalwart tackler, Phillips would slide in as a solid DB2 on balanced or tackle-heavy scoring fantasy squads. Derwin James hasn’t played at all this season after offseason surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot. When healthy, James is a transcendent talent and would be in contention for DB1. Certainly worth a gamble for any fantasy squad. Based on Lynn’s comments, Phillips might be ready before James but James is the bigger prize. Watch the transaction reports prior to the game against the Broncos in week 13. Rookie Roderick Teamer figures to lose his snaps if either safety returns.

Jaquiski Tartt SFO S – 3-4 SS     Value: DB2

This is a matchup play more than anything. The Baltimore Ravens looked like an unstoppable offensive juggernaut on the Monday nighter against the Rams. On top of that, the Ravens have afforded over 82 points against the top two opposing safeties over their last three games, an average of 13.7 points per game per safety. Tartt isn’t a household name for IDP circles but I’d be willing to gamble of a high snap count safety to potentially have a big game against one of the more dynamic offenses in the NFL right now. Tartt is averaging 10.6 fantasy points per game over his last four games so he’s on a personal roll as well.

Julian Love NYG CB/S – 3-4 FS     Value: DB2 – DB3 (dynasty stash)

With Jabrill Peppers likely missing some time with some fractures in his back, fourth-round rookie Julian Love figures to get an extended look. Already handling third safety duties for the Giants, my expectation is that the Giants go with the former golden domer against the Packers in week 13. Both Giants safeties have been valuable fantasy commodities as New York’s linebackers are among the weakest in the NFL and they just can’t seem to cover the middle of the field. Love is a touch of a gamble as the Giants haven’t officially announced him as the replacement but he, and not Michael Thomas, saw the increase in snaps when Peppers was unable to return to the game. Love also carries some minor keeper value in deeper leagues as Antoine Bethea is an easy cap casualty should the Giants decide to move on from him.

IDP free agent report: Week 12

Two weeks to go in the fantasy regular season either means you’ve given up the ghost trying to make the playoffs, you’re locked into a playoff spot or you are fighting for one of the few spots remaining. If you are out of it in a dynasty or keeper league, look to trade for potential and backfill your roster with potential as well. High picks that haven’t cracked NFL starting lineups are a great place to start. You may see a few of those players pop up in the report here and there. If you are firmly locked into a playoff spot, now is the time to look at playoff schedules to ensure that you get maximum point potential in weeks 14, 15 and 16. Grabbing a few now while other owners are focused on this week’s matchup only could give you an edge in the playoffs. Finally, remember that if you are still in the race but are not locked into a playoff spot, the playoffs start for you now. You need to win now and can’t afford to give away any points. Maximize this week’s points and live to fight another week once you win. There isn’t any sense in worrying about holding potential unless you can win this week and next.

It is the last week of bye weeks in the NFL with the Chiefs, Chargers, Cardinals and Vikings all getting the week off and then it’s back to 16 NFL games per week again until the end of the regular season.

Linebacker Plays

Much like this week, it was a skinny week for options last week at linebacker. Nick Kwiatkoski scored 4 total tackles on 65% usage in the Sunday nighter against the Rams. In the game, the Bears rolled more down linemen with three linebackers instead of four linebackers for the first time this year. It’s a frustrating development for fantasy owners as this wasn’t in the cards after last week. Danny Trevathan was out and figures to be out for a while so however Chicago opts to use their second ILB going forward, the work will go to Kwiatkoski. Josh Bynes scored 2 total tackles and an interception but received only 39% of the snaps compared to LJ Fort’s 49% and Patrick Onwuasor’s 15%. The blowout that the Texans suffered at the hands of the Ravens makes this one hard to read but a full split makes this one a hands-off situation for me. Unfortunately, the return of Denzel Perryman to a prominent role reduced Drue Tranquill back to droppable status.

Najeh Goode JAC LB – 4-3 WLB     Value: LB3

If you are a glutton for punishment like I am, you might take one more crack at the Jaguars WLB before you snap. Najeh Goode appears to be recovered from his foot problem and received 96% usage in week 11 against the Colts. He converted that into 5 solo tackles. Not bad but if I’m being honest, I’d hope for better in a game that featured 36 rushes plus receptions to running backs. That said, the usage is there and his week 12 opponent is the Titans who are allowing an average of over 15 fantasy points per game to 4-3 WLBs including 12 from Quincy Williams, the WLB that faced them in week 3. Give Najeh a look on the back end of your starting lineup.

Neville Hewitt NYJ LB – 3-4 ILB     Value: LB2 – LB3

Neville Hewitt returned to the Jets lineup in week 11 against the Redskins after missing the previous four weeks due to a neck issue. Hewitt played every snap and recorded 5 total tackles and an interception. For those who picked up previous recommendations Brandon Copeland and James Burgess, it was Copeland’s usage that suffered as Burgess played every snap while Copeland returned to OLB rotational usage. The Raiders in week 12 are a good matchup for Hewitt but it gets messy after that. Give him a look this week and then evaluate your options going forward.

Nate Gerry PHI LB – 4-3 MLB     Value: LB2

Nigel Bradham’s ankle does not appear to be progressing, even out of the Eagles’ bye week. Nate Gerry continues to see high usage and his output is too high given his low ownership percentage. Against the Patriots, Gerry played every snap but one and turned in a game-high 10 total tackles to go with a sack. With the Seahawks in town, I like Gerry to turn in another solid performance as long as Nigel Bradham continues to remain out of the lineup.

Kiko Alonso NOS LB – 4-3 MLB     Value: LB3

Alonso is a speculator’s pickup. The Saints deployment of linebackers has been fairly consistent this year. As long as he’s healthy, DeMario Davis approaches 100% usage. AJ Klein receives between 75 – 100% of the snaps depending on the game situation. After that Alex Anzalone picked up the scraps until his season-ending injury, after which Kiko Alonso drew some work between 10 – 40% of the snaps. In week 11 against the Buccaneers, Klein (43%) was out-snapped by Alonso (66%). Alonso was able to turn in 6 solo tackles and a PD in that game. One game isn’t a trend but Alonso has enough history to show that he can be a viable fantasy commodity when given the snaps to do so. Speculate at your own risk.

Defensive Lineman Plays

It’s rare that I recommend the DL1, LB1 or DB1 of the week in a given week so when it happens, I’m going to give myself a little credit. Maxx Crosby put together a matchup-winner effort against the Bengals with 5 total tackles, 4 sacks and a forced fumble on 78% usage. In the same game, Clelin Ferrell was a little disappointing with a single solo tackle and a PD on 65% usage. In a similar hot and cold pick with the Chiefs, Frank Clark was everywhere with 5 total tackles, a PD, a sack and a forced fumble whereas Chris Jones was invisible from a stat perspective.

Jaguars pass rush JAC DL – 4-3 DL     Value: DL1 – DL3

Ranging from Calais Campbell to Yannick Ngakoue to Josh Allen, find a way to start your Jaguars pass rushers. Statistically speaking, with the Titans hosting the Jaguars this week, there is no better chance for your Jacksonville players to log a sack than this week as Tennessee is leading the league in sacks allowed with 4.2 per game. While some of those sacks were taken by Marcus Mariota, Ryan Tannehill has been sacked four times in each of his last two games. The Titans are struggling to protect their quarterbacks and I would do what I could to try to capitalize on that.

Chad Thomas / Olivier Vernon CLE DE – 4-3 DE     Value: DL2

Digging a little deeper here, the Browns may offer a bit of opportunity as far as a potential pickup goes. Myles Garrett is suspended for that ridiculous helmet-swinging incident. Olivier Vernon is currently out with a knee injury but head coach Freddie Kitchens has been quoted as saying that Vernon could be “very close” to returning in week 12. 2018 third-round pick Chad Thomas has filled in for Vernon over the past couple of games and actually has a sack in each game on a little better than 75% usage. The matchup for the Browns in week 12 is a juicy one, the Miami Dolphins in Cleveland. If you are sack hunting, both of these guys have a great shot at logging a sack in week 12 and they have low ownership percentages.

Defensive Back Plays

It was a remarkably consistent week for defensive back recommendations as no matter which option you took, you were rewarded with at least 12 fantasy points. DJ Swearinger at 60% usage split snaps with Curtis Riley at 40% usage. Swearinger still rewarded owners brave enough to use him with 7 total tackles against the Bengals. Jalen Thompson took every snap but one at strong safety and turned in 5 solo tackles and an interception against the 49ers. Finally, Nik Needham continued his strong IDP output with 6 solo tackles, 2 PDs and a forced fumble on 99% usage against the Bills.

Darian Thompson DAL S – 4-3 S     Value: DB2 – DB3

With regular starter Jeff Heath out with a shoulder injury, former Giant Darian Thompson has stepped up to fill the starting strong safety role for the Cowboys. IN two games since assuming the role, Thompson has turned in 12 total tackles and a PD. Adding to the intrigue is the matchup in week 12, the Patriots in New England. The Patriots are affording opposing strong safeties 12.7 fantasy points per game this year. Given the low cost of ownership here, Thompson seems like an easy plug-and-play option for DB streamers.

Sheldrick Redwine CLE S – 4-3 SS     Value: DB3 (Dynasty stash)

First off, first-team All-Name squad right here. Secondly, 2019 fourth-round pick Redwine is likely to be pressed into starting duty with the Browns seeing massive losses in their secondary. Jermaine Whitehead social media’d himself off of the team, Eric Murray remains out still recovering from knee surgery on Nov 1 and Morgan Burnett is out for the year with an Achilles injury. That leaves Redwine and Damarious Randall as the only true able-bodied safeties on the team. Juston Burris moved inside as well to help with safety duties as Randall was ejected from the Browns’ week 11 games against the Steelers for a helmet-to-helmet hit but he is a converted corner and was likely there for emergency purposes. Free agency might play into this a little bit but I’d expect the Browns to give their rookie a shot to prove himself. The Dolphins in week 12 aren’t a great IDP matchup but Redwine’s appeal is more in the fantasy playoffs or for dynasty purposes.

Ricardo Allen ATL S – 4-3 SS     Value: DB3

Ricardo Allen hasn’t made much noise this year among IDP circles but he is the top IDP option amongst the Falcons’ secondary with Keanu Neal done for the year with an Achilles injury. While his numbers haven’t been eye-popping, he has a solid 7-9 point tackle floor and is coming off of his best game of the season against the Panthers with 6 total tackles, 3 PDs and an interception. He plays virtually every snap and if the Falcons’ defense continues to make strides, he may be in line for a big value increase. On top of that, the Falcons visit Tampa Bay in week 12. The Buccaneers are offering over 13 fantasy points per game to opposing strong safeties this year. I’d give Allen a look as a high-floor option at DB.

IDP free agent report: Week 11

What a weird week in the NFL. The 1-7 Falcons dominate the 7-1 Saints, Miami beats Indianapolis to put together a two-game winning streak and Tennessee manages to sneak by Kansas City even though Patrick Mahomes returned to the lineup and threw for 446 yards and 3 TDs.

Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

What a weird week in the NFL. The 1-7 Falcons dominate the 7-1 Saints, Miami beats Indianapolis to put together a two-game winning streak and Tennessee manages to sneak by Kansas City even though Patrick Mahomes returned to the lineup and threw for 446 yards and 3 TDs.

For fantasy squads, there are only three regular season games left in most formats. The formula remains the same with how your record should dictate your approach to free agency. Remember that playoff potential only matters if you actually make the playoffs! Secure your berth and then look to add pieces to help you in weeks 14-17. Week 11 is the second last week of bye weeks which sees the Packers, Giants, Seahawks and Titans get the week off.

Linebacker Plays

There were some hits and some misses in last week’s column. Joe Walker‘s usage plummeted by to 28% after the coaching staff asserted that he had been elevated to a starter. Haason Reddick got the lion’s share of the snaps over Walker and the stats that went with them against the Buccaneers. Walker got 1 assist to Reddick’s 7 total tackles and a PD. This might be a situation to avoid going forward. Both Brandon Copeland and James Burgess were serviceable in their effort against the Giants. Copeland played every snap and scored 7 total tackles. Burgess played every snap but one and scored 7 total tackles along with a half sack and a PD. The Jets signed former Falcon standout Paul Worrilow to shore up their ILB depth but he did not see any action on the weekend. Fred Warner was remarkable on Monday night with 7 total tackles, 2 sacks, 1 PD and a forced fumble. Dre Greenlaw was instrumental as well with 8 total tackles and a critical interception in overtime.

Nick Kwiatkoski CHI LB – 3-4 ILB     Value: LB1 – LB2

If you watched the Lions/Bears game closely, you saw Danny Trevathan’s arm bend in a way that it wasn’t supposed to bend after a tackle attempt. Trevathan left the field and didn’t return. Nick Kwiatkoski assumed ILB snaps beside Roquan Smith and proceeded to log 10 total tackles, an interception and a sack on 78% usage. I’m no doctor and little details have been released but I would be very surprised if Trevathan plays next week. That landing looked ugly. You’ll have to watch the injury report for news about Trevathan’s availability but assuming that he’s out, the Bears have used Kwiatkoski exclusively in relief of either starting ILB when they have missed time. The Bears face the Rams in week 11.

Drue Tranquill LAC LB – 4-3 MLB     Value: LB2 – LB3

It seems like every year I am talking about trying to get value in the Chargers LB corps because of the injury turnover and poor play. Who would have thought that a 36 year old LB with three ACL surgeries, Thomas Davis, would have been the most consistent of them all? However, besides Davis has been a question mark all season. Kyzir White, Uchenna Nwosu, Drue Tranquill and Denzel Perryman have all been given some run at the job. Perryman seems to have had the majority of the snaps prior to week 10 but a knee injury left him active but not playing. Drue Tranquill took 100% of the snaps and logged a team-leading 14 total tackles. While Perryman might be active again next week and take away the value from this pickup, it is worth mentioning that Tranquill is the only ILB outside of Davis that have played 100% of the snaps in a game this year. If the coaching staff runs with him, he is a big value play that has next to no ownership right now. Just know that he carries some risk. The Chiefs in week 11 represent some good value as they offered over 48 fantasy points to ILBs last week.

Josh Bynes BAL LB – 3-4 ILB     Value: LB2 – LB3

Josh Bynes appeared very recently on the report but that was when Patrick Onwuasor was out. With Onwuasor returned from his ankle injury, I assumed that he would be a fulltime option for the Ravens and Bynes or LJ Fort would assume a 40-70% usage role. However, since then, the Ravens have deployed multiple five and six DB packages regularly with Bynes as the centerpiece. These were the LB usages against the Bengals in week 10; Bynes – 61%, Onwuasor – 29%, Fort – 21% and Board – 0%. Bynes turned that usage into 9 total tackles. It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen moving forward without any direction given from the coaching staff but the usage seems to suggest that Bynes is the guy to play if this week is representative. The Texans in week 11 should prove to be a much stouter attack than the Bengals put forward in week 10.

Defensive Lineman Plays

Both Colts defensive ends were good for a stream play in their game against the Dolphins despite the Colts losing. Justin Houston logged 4 total tackles and a sack on 73% usage whereas Jabaal Sheard logged 3 total tackles and a sack on 71% usage. Quinnen Williams logged 64% of the snaps and scored a fumble recovery as his only stat. He played much more nose tackle than fantasy owners would like him to though, leading to the weaker statline.

Maxx Crosby / Clelin Ferrell OAK DE – 4-3 DE     Value: DL1 – DL2

Both Crosby (3 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble on 91% usage) and Ferrell (8 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 PD on 73% usage) are coming off of huge games against the Chargers which should increase their asking price, unfortunately. However, they are also going into a very good matchup against the winless Bengals who are top 5 in sacks allowed in the NFL. I like the high usages for both of them and would consider both to have above-average playoff schedules as well. Have a peek at your waiver wire and consider a Raider DE if you have a hole to fill.

Chris Jones / Frank Clark KCC DT/DE – 4-3 NT/DE     Value: DL1 – DL2

Chris Jones has been exceptional coming off of a groin injury that saw him miss three games between week 6 and 8. Since his return, he has logged 10 total tackles and 3 sacks on 73% average usage across two games. On top of those stellar numbers, he faces a Chargers team in week 11 that just came off of giving up five sacks to the Oakland Raiders. In a similar situation, Frank Clark is coming off a four solo tackles, 1 PD and 1 sack effort against the Titans on 81% usage. Clark missed weeks 8 and 9 with a groin injury and a pinched nerve that has bothered him all season. If Clark is active, I’m starting him in this matchup until the Chargers can fix the mess that they were on Thursday.

Defensive Back Plays

It was overall a pretty good week for defensive backs from last’s week report. Jaylen Watkins‘ 4 total tackles on 100% usage were a little underwhelming but no defensive back scored many tackles in that game. That said, that doesn’t mean that a DB didn’t score well. Erik Harris had a game to remember with 2 total tackles, 2 interceptions, 3 PDs, 115 interception return yards and a touchdown. He almost had a third in the end zone later in the game. Despite the low tackle numbers, Harris was a DB1 in almost every format. Taylor Rapp was very solid in tackle heavy and balanced formats with 9 total tackles on 100% usage. Marqui Christian received only 49% of the Rams’ defensive snaps and as a result, only logged 2 total tackles and a PD.

DJ Swearinger OAK S – 4-3 SS     Value: DB3

With the loss of Karl Joseph to injured reserve with a foot injury, the Raiders immediately signed former Cardinal DJ Swearinger to a contract. The history on Swearinger is that he is a decent tackle, sometimes to his own detriment, and a below-average coverage safety. While that hasn’t translated to NFL success, it has meant that Swearinger is a decent tackle option for IDP players at defensive back. There is still a risk of Swearinger not being inserted into the starting lineup right away but with little NFL talent and experience between him and a starting role, I feel as though he will become an option for IDP lineups soon enough. Since being elevated to 100% usage, Joseph had posted 80 fantasy points over seven games. Given Joseph’s play, I don’t see how Swearinger can’t replicate those numbers.

Jalen Thompson ARI SS – 3-4 SS     Value: DB3 – flex

It appears as though Jalen has won the battle of the Thompsons at strong safety over Deionte although the latter lost his 30-40% snap share due to a knee injury. Jalen Thompson benefited in week 10 against the Buccaneers with a 96% snap share and turned in 6 solo tackles in the effort. If Jalen gets the lion’s share of the snaps again, I’d play him in a DB3/flex role against the 49ers. San Francisco is offering close 29 fantasy points per game to opposing safeties over their last five weeks. Granted Budda Baker is likely to grab the majority of those points but a double-digit fantasy point effort is probably where he ends up, hence his DB3 recommendation.

Nik Needham MIA CB – 4-3 CB     Value: DB3 – flex

If you are a gambler or you play in a corner required league, you might want to pay attention to this one. Nik Needham started getting snaps in week 6 and was elevated to 100% in week 9 and 10. In those two weeks of 100% usage, Needham has scored 15 total tackles, 3 PDs, a sack and an interception. Not bad for an undrafted free agent rookie. Full disclosure, Needham’s matchup in week 11 is a bad one. Buffalo hasn’t allowed many double-digit fantasy point performances by cornerbacks this year. But the Browns and Eagles are in weeks 12 and 13. Given his past two performances, Needham might be on the watch list. Snap him up if you have room.
