Baylor at Kansas Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor has been terrific over the last month. It lost at Texas in a decent battle a few weeks ago, but that’s the only blip in a 10-1 run including a strong 75-69 win over Kansas.

How do you beat Kansas? You move the ball around. The team is 5-3 when teams come up with 13 or more assists – and 0-2 when allowing 18 or more – and 13-0 when teams come up with ten or fewer.

What’s going right lately for the Bears? They’re making everything thanks to a whole slew of assists.

This was a decent passing team throughout the year, but it’s been brilliant over the last four games with 67 assists leading to a whole lot of easy points. It has 12 or more in three of those four games, but …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas has been amazing at home.

It had a blip when it didn’t show up in a blowout loss to Kansas State, but overall it’s 12-1 in Allen partly because the turnovers aren’t quite there at home.

Overall the team has kept the mistakes to a relative minimum, as always the rebounding has been great, and compared to the rest of the Big 12 – not the best of outside shooting conferences other than what Baylor does – it shoots threes like Steph Curry.

Baylor will have issues on the defensive boards, the defense overall is just okay, and …

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

This should be fantastic.

It’s one of those games that might end up making all the difference between being in the mix for a 1 seed or possibly down to a 3, the energy will be terrific, and the winner should be in the top four in the rankings come Monday.

Baylor will go on its share of runs, but Kansas will be just a wee bit better on the boards with the defensive intensity coming through late. Baylor will keep this alive in the last few minutes with free throws, but it won’t be enough.

Kansas is 17-1 when scoring at least 70 points, so …

Kansas at Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas isn’t exactly back into national championship-level mode, but it’s not far off.

It’s playing better than it did over a rough losing stretch a few weeks ago, the rebounding is there, and the three-point shooting is back.

This is hardly a team that relies on the three – it’s way too good at forcing takeaways and converting off the mistakes – but when it’s hitting from the outside, forget it.

Kansas is 16-0 when hitting 35% or better from the outside, and 5-5 when it doesn’t. It has to keep the offense moving, make the extra pass, and convert off the Oklahoma State turnovers that are sure to be there – at least 12 of them.

However …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State has been a killer at guarding the three.

It’s 1-7 when allowing teams to hit better than 33% from three – granted, Kansas was one of those teams, but it only won by two in Lawrence even though it shot the lights out – and it’s 15-2 when allowing teams to hit fewer than that.

At home, the Cowboy defense has been amazing over the last several games – Texas Tech was the only team to hit better than 30% from three in Gallagher-Iba, and it lost – but more than anything else, the offense is making just about everything at home.

It’s unbeaten in Stillwater when making more than 42% from the field, and the Kansas defense has allowed more than that in two of its last three road games.

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s playing with more confidence right now than Oklahoma State?

Granted, there haven’t been a ton of great wins over the recent run, but it just came off a terrific performance in a 64-56 win at Iowa State.

The best defense in the Big 12 will be great at home, the rebounds will be there, and it’ll be a terrific rematch win after losing the Jayhawks at the end of 2022.

Kansas Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Jayhawks miss from the Big 12 slate?

Last year at this time Kansas was considered everyone’s free space on the slate. Now it’s a dangerous team that should be a tough out each and every week.

In conference play it has to go to Texas, but it gets a week off before dealing with Oklahoma. Not playing West Virginia is unfortunate, and getting Houston would’ve been nice. However, not playing Baylor isn’t bad and TCU not on the slate is obviously a massive break.

Even better …

Kansas Football Schedule What Really Matters

The Jayhawks don’t have two road games in a row, there’s no stretch of away games to freak out about, and best of all, five of the Big 12 games are at home meaning just four are on the road.

Going to Oklahoma State it dangerous, but the team should be good enough to hang away from Lawrence against Iowa State and Cincinnati. That leaves the Texas game on the road, and that’s coming after what should be a challenging date against BYU.

But …

Kansas Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Can the Jayhawks rock at home?

There aren’t any real layups after starting out against Missouri State – going to Nevada will be close, though. Illinois, BYU, UCF, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Kansas State makes for a challenging run of home games. Winning at least four of those could be a must.

Kansas might be vastly improved, but it’s still going to be a fight to push past six wins and bowl eligibility. That sixth win can’t come down to the road game at Cincinnati.

Texas vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

Texas needed that.

The loss at Tennessee can certainly be forgiven, and losing to Iowa State in Ames apparently isn’t anything to get weird about – more on that in a moment – but it was the gut-check 69-66 win at Kansas State that might turn into the signature game of the regular season.

Lose that, and with this trip to Kansas, there would’ve been an honest shot of dropping three of its last four games.

Instead, it overcame a slew of mistakes, got the offense going, and now it can  play a little looser in this.

The Longhorns struggled from three in Manhattan, but it’s normally great from the outside, they have the scoring punch to keep up with the Jayhawks, and there won’t be any issues staying alive on the boards.

While they’re coming in off a huge performance …

Why Kansas Will Win

Let’s just say the performance in the 68-53 loss at Iowa State on Saturday didn’t reflect the team’s best work.

It was sluggish from the start, sloppy throughout, and it never got the shooting going.

There might have been a problem in the stunning 23-point loss to TCU a few weeks ago, but that was the lone loss at home. It’s 11-1 in Lawrence, and now after losing four of its last six games there’s a greater sense of urgency to come up with something big.

They’ve got to move the ball around better. They turned it over 20 times against Kansas State and generated just 12 assists. They’re 16-2 when coming up with 14 or more and have yet to come up with fewer than 15 at home.

That matters because it – duh – means the offense is moving better, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Texas is 13-1 when teams come up with fewer than 12 assists.

Kansas will have a hard time running Texas out of the gym, but it’ll be far more energized and far sharper than they were on Saturday. The offense will get more consistent production from the outside, and yes, it’ll all start from better ball movement.

Kansas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Now the Jayhawks are back on track.

After a three game losing streak following the 62-60 win over Iowa State, they were able to roll Kentucky and Kansas State in impressive performances that made it look like they’re ready to make a run.

What’s the difference? The turnovers have slowed, the threes have been there, and the team is passing the ball around better – they’re playing like they’re a bit more focused and sharper.

On the flip side, Iowa State is coming off of two straight losses when it couldn’t do much of anything on the free throw line, turned it over 35 times in the two games, and …

Why Iowa State Will Win

Now it’s back home.

2-5 away from Ames, this is a night-and-day different team at home winning 11 out of 11.

What’s the difference? There are a whole lot more takeaways and mistakes forced, coming up with 20 or more in five of the 11 home wins and more than 15 just twice – with 19 in those two – away from the Hilton.

Kansas doesn’t have a huge turnover problem, there are enough to matter.  The Cyclones were able to battle and claw in the two point loss the first time around with just 12 takeaways. They’ll come up with more in this.

What’s Going To Happen

Can the home court advantage really mean that much here?

Yup.

Iowa State has to come up with a huge day on the defensive glass – that’s a problem for this bunch – but the defense should be able to generate just enough steals to make a difference if …

Free throws.

Iowa State is 11-0 when hitting better than 60% from the line. It’ll do that at home.

AutoZone Liberty Bowl What Happened

One of the wildest bowl games ever ended in a misfire. In the third overtime – it goes to two-point conversions after two OTs – Kansas backup QB Jason Bean threw a bad pass on a perfectly designed play, and Arkansas survived.

The Hogs got two touchdown runs in their first two overtime possessions – including a 20-yarder from KJ Jefferson – and connected on its two-point tries both in the second and third overtimes.

They thought they had it won in the second OT when Kansas QB Jalon Daniels – who ran for a touchdown to pull within two – was stopped just short of the goal line on the two-point conversion, but Arkansas’ Quincey McAdoo was called for targeting, KU converted, and it sent the game into that third OT. Before all of THAT …

Arkansas was rolling. It was up 31-7 in the first half helped by two Jefferson touchdown passes and a scoring run, and it was up 38-13 in the third. Kansas cranked up a few scoring drives to make it interesting, but instead of playing it conservative late – the Jayhawks didn’t have any timeouts left – Arkansas kept cranking up the offense, lost a very, very questionable fumble, and then it all broke loose from there …

Daniels left the Jayhawks on a quick touchdown drive to pull within 8 with just over a minute to play. They recovered a perfectly executed onside kick, went 50 yards in four plays with Daniels finding Luke Grimm for a 21-yard touchdown and Lawrence Arnold for two, and the wild comeback was complete to force overtime.

AutoZone Liberty Bowl Player of the Game

KJ Jefferson, QB Arkansas & Jalon Daniels, QB Kansas

Jefferson completed 19-of-29 passes for 287 yards and two touchdown with a pick, and led the game with 139 rushing yards and two scores. Daniels completed 47-of-55 passes for 544 yards and five touchdowns with two picks, and ran for 21 yards and a score.

CFN Experts Picks CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

AutoZone Liberty Bowl Fun Stats

– Total Yards: Arkansas 681 – Kansas 603

– Kansas TE Luke Grimm caught ten passes for 167 yards and a score

– Arkansas ran for 395 yards. Kansas threw for 544 yards.

AutoZone Liberty Bowl What It All Means

Arkansas came entirely too close to one of the all-time biggest gags. It got the win, but the defense was nowhere to be found over the last 20 minutes, the pass rush died, and the failed execution on the onside kick and on Kansas drive after Kansas drive was epically awful. With that said …

Give Arkansas all the credit in the world for pulling this off. Kansas could’ve given up early, and didn’t and Arkansas could’ve folded under the weight of the collapse, and didn’t.

All that matters now is a winning season, a positive victory to go into 2023, and a second bowl win in a row for Sam Pittman. Now the program is 4-1 in the last five bowl appearances and 6-2 in the last eight going back to 2008.

It’s little solace at the moment, but imagine what a Jayhawk football fan would’ve said if four months ago you said Kansas would be in a bowl game and mount one of the greatest comebacks in college football history.

Yeah, the team came up just short – did Jason Bean think it was first down in the third overtime? – but all anyone will remember is the heart of this team to do what it did, and the talent of Jalon Daniels and that offense for rolling late.

Okay, so it was 15th straight losing season, but it sure as shoot doesn’t feel like it. It was the first bowl appearance since 2008, the first season with more than five wins since 2009, and head coach Lance Leipold has made Kansas one of the cool teams going into next year. It’s totally a corny cliché, but really, there were no losers in this game.

Kansas vs Arkansas AutoZone Liberty Bowl 5 Things To Know

AutoZone Liberty Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Whatever happens in this, Kansas has already won. Lance Leipold took the woeful football program to its best season in a long, long time, with the six wins the most in a season in the last 14 years. Win, and it’ll be the first winning season and first bowl win since taking the Insight in 2008.

It hasn’t always been a smooth campaign, but it was the story of the first half of the year. The offense is fun, the defense is … the offense is fun, and the coaching is as good as any in the bowl season.

– Arkansas knows what it’s like to have to fight back from a rough run. Last season was the first winning season since 2016, and head coach Sam Pittman followed it up with a good 6-6 campaign, but an unfulfilling one. There were too many close, tough losses, but it’s here with a chance for back-to-back winning seasons.

The Hogs are missing a whole lot, including defensive coordinator Barry Odom, who’s off to live the life as new the head coach at UNLV. QB KJ Jefferson is back, but there are a slew of key starters transferring or sitting out. The depth is about to be challenged.

– There haven’t been a ton of bowls for Arkansas. over the last ten years, but it’s good when it gets there. The Hogs have won four of their last five – including the Outback last year against Penn State – and five of the last seven.

Kansas beat Minnesota in the 2008 Insight. That was a long time ago, but the program comes in this on a three-game winning streak and winning five of its last six after dropping the 1981 Hall of Fame to Mississippi State.

One of the longest running bowls before the big ones, the Liberty has been rolling since 1959. It was on a run of fantastic games with four straight by five points or fewer, and six in seven by eight points or fewer. And then Texas Tech blew past the late Mike Leach’s Mississippi State team – it was missing a few key offensive linemen – 34-7 in last year’s clunker.

CFN Experts Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Kansas Will Win The AutoZone Liberty Bowl

Like all Power Five programs, Kansas is missing a few of its players who made the season solid, but again, it’s nothing compared to what the Hogs lost.

The biggest killers missing are in the defensive back seven. Star linebacker Drew Sanders and Bumper Pool were the team’s top two tacklers, and the secondary is undergoing a few major changes. Kansas should be able to take advantage of all the new guys.

The Jayhawks led the Big 12 in third down conversions – Arkansas, even with all its parts and despite being amazing at getting to the quarterback, was awful defensively on third downs. They can hit the deep shots, and QB Jalon Daniels and company will keep the offensive pressure on.

Daniels and the ground game should get moving, too. The Hogs were 1-4 when giving up 190 rushing yards or more, the Jayhawks were 5-1 when getting that many or more and …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Arkansas Will Win The AutoZone Liberty Bowl

The Jayhawks were 1-5 when they didn’t get to 190 rushing yards, but that’s not their problem.

Arkansas might not be anything special defensively other than generate sacks, but the Kansas D really doesn’t stop anyone’s ground game and can’t come up with enough third down stops. The effort is there, and sometimes there are enough takeaways to survive, but there aren’t any tackles for loss.

Arkansas might have lost a ton, but other than C Ricky Stromberg – sort of a big one – the line is intact and the backfield is as solid as any in the bowls. The Kansas D can’t generate the pressure needed to bother KJ Jefferson or slow down star RB Raheim Sanders.

The Jayhawks are 0-5 when allowing 230 rushing yards or more – that shouldn’t be a problem for the Hogs.

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas State doesn’t have Bijan Robinson.

Yeah, the Wildcat running game is amazing – and it does have Deuce Vaughn – but for the first time all season Kansas looked like … Kansas.

Texas got 243 rushing yards and four scores out of Robinson as part of the 427 the team came up with, but that’s baked into the KU cake. It’s just not that great against the run, but it usually overcomes it with its own offensive production.

Kansas State takes things up a few notches once the defense starts taking the ball away, but Kansas hasn’t been too bad at limiting the mistakes lately. Penalties haven’t been a real problem all year, and as long as there aren’t multiple turnovers, the offense should be able to keep up.

Will Howard has cranked up the passing game – he was terrific last week in the 48-31 win over West Virginia – for a balanced attack that should move the ball at will against the worst defense in the Big 12.

But it’s going to be about the running game.

Kansas State has 220 yards or more seven times. Kansas is 0-4 when allowing 260 yards or more, the Wildcats were able to get there three times, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Get ready for the show.

Kansas will crank up the attack to make this a fun back-and-fourth fight, but the other side will always have an answer.

The Kansas State defense is good enough against the run, the team is among them best in the country in turnover margin, and is should all come together in the 14th straight win in the series.
