Now onto some keys to victory for the Rams.

Three Keys to a colorado state victory

1. DBs Wake Up

After facing a gauntlet of teams that run the ball more often than not, the Rams now find themselves in a virtual mirror matchup. Hawai’i throws the ball as often as CSU wants to and the Rams defensive backs will need to be up for the job.

Brayden Schager is as wild a thrower as Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi is. Five more touchdowns and one less interception, but Schager isn’t afraid to throw it in there. Everyone from Jack Howell to Henry Blackburn to Chigozie Anusiem need to be ready to play a full 60 minutes at speed.

2. Pressure, Pressure, Pressure

Hawai’i has allowed 38 sacks. Colorado State has collected 32 sacks. Something has to give and the Rams need to make sure it isn’t them. 12 players have collected at least 0.5 sacks for CSU and everyone needs to step up against the Warriors.

They also need to not over run the play. Schager isn’t that much of runner, but he will run if necessary. Mohamed Kamara, Nuer Gatkuoth, and company need to set the edge and maintain it if they want to get off the field and not let Hawai’i drive down the field.

3. Take Your Shots

Tory Horton, Justus Ross-Simmons, Louis Brown, Dallin Holker, and Dylan Goffney. The Rams receiving core has been outstanding this year. All five have at least two touchdowns and at least one 40 yard catch down the field. Against the Warriors, they all need to be at their best one more time.

We can’t forget Justin Marshall. The freshman has burst onto the scene in these past two games with 217 yards and one touchdown on 37 carries. The run game will be key to keep the Hawai’i defense honest and Marshall has shown he can break plays open.

what will happen

It’s the last game of the season. One win. 1-0. That’s the goal for the Rams. Win and in. Bowl eligibility is in grasp. Now they need to go take it. And they will. The offense has been better somewhat than last year. The defense has taken a step back. But against Hawai’i, it all comes together and the Rams reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2017.

Final Score: Colorado State 38, Hawai’i 27

GAME NOTES (PDF):  San Jose State |  UNLV

ODDS: UNLV Rebels by -2.5

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: UNLV by -9.11

This Saturday afternoon, it comes down to this: If the Rebels win, they will host the championship game against the winner of Boise State and Air Force. According to CBS Sports, if San Jose State wins, that will create a three-way tie among UNLV, San Jose State and the winner of Boise State and Air Force, and the participants will be determined by computer rankings, a composite average of selected computer rankings to determine the spots.

Both teams are coming into this contest on winning streaks, with the Rebels having won three in a row and the Spartans a winner of their last five. Expect both teams to show those pedigrees this week with a spot in the championship game on the line.

Although the Spartans have won the last three contests by a combined 101-44, if this season has shown anything it is that this Rebels team is built differently, going 9-2 on the year. This will be an interesting contest in all phases, and special teams play may well play a part in determining the winner.

Statistically, the teams match up relatively well; San Jose State ranks 41st in total defense to UNLV’s 39th ranked offense. Conversely, the Spartans’ 54th rank in total offense will match up with the Rebels’ 76th rank in total defense. Both teams also rank near one another in time of possession, which should play out as a back-and-forth affair.

HERE IS WHY THE SPARTANS WILL WIN AGAINST THE REBELS

Coming into this game, the Spartans’ running game has been rounding into form to say the least, led by running backs Kairee Robinson and Quali Conley (two of the top five rushing leaders in conference) and even quarterback Chevan Cordeiro. If San Jose State can run the ball – without the predictability of running on first down – there will be an opportunity to control the clock and keep UNLV’s high-powered offense on the sidelines.

From there, Spartans should be willing to go to play-action or even a trick play or two to keep the ball as they see fit. UNLV’s front seven will pose arguably the toughest test to date but Cordeiro has proven resilient, and the team has relied on that determination well.

Prediction

Based on the statistics, expect a closely contested game between two teams willing to take shots down the field if the opportunities are there. At this point in the season, both teams realize what the stakes are and will be willing to risk a spot in the championship game to get there. Expect a few trick plays, but otherwise a game effort from both teams this Saturday afternoon.

San Jose State 30, UNLV 27

GAME NOTES (PDF): Fresno State | San Diego State

ODDS: Fresno State -5

SP+ PROJECTION: Fresno State by 13.9

FEI PROJECTION: Fresno State by 9.8

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: Fresno State 77.78% win probability (29.92-19.79)

After suffering one of its most disappointing losses in recent memory, the Fresno State Bulldogs will look to bounce back in their last road trip of the regular season, a date in southern California against the San Diego State Aztecs.

Things have not gone according to plan for Brady Hoke’s squad in 2023, though they won’t want to come out flat in his last game on the sidelines before his announced retirement. With the Old Oil Can on the line and another ten-win season still in sight, the Bulldogs should be well-motivated themselves. Here’s how they can come out on top against the Aztecs.

Three Keys to a Fresno State State Victory

1. Get back to finishing offensive drives.

It may be that quarterback Mikey Keene and his ongoing battle with injuries have had a more significant impact on the Bulldogs than anyone realizes. By both points per drive and available yards percentage earned per drive, the losses to San Jose State and New Mexico were the two worst offensive performances of the season. If he’s on track to be fully recovered from what was reported to be a minor concussion, as was suggested this week by head coach Jeff Tedford, it could help them get back on track in a number of ways.

Chief among those ways: Getting back into the red zone more consistently. Fresno State has only had seven drives inside the opponent’s 20-yard line in three November games, the fewest in the Mountain West, and they’ve scored only four touchdowns in those opportunities. By contrast, the Aztecs defense has allowed eight touchdowns in 13 red zone situations this month, a figure that’s comparable to when they were struggling with the likes of UCLA, Oregon State, Boise State, and Air Force back in September.

2. Sort out the run defense.

After Kairee Robinson and Jacory Croskey-Merritt ran roughshod against the Bulldogs in back-to-back weeks, ending the regular season against San Diego State’s relatively weak ground game should give Kevin Coyle’s unit something of a reprieve. Though Jaylen Armstead ran for 134 yards against San Jose State last Saturday, that was the Aztecs’ first 100-yard performance of the season and 68.7% of that yardage came on just four of 21 carries; he was also stopped for two or fewer yards seven times.

If they can keep Armstead from making a big impact, they’ll also need to be wary of quarterback Jalen Mayden, who scored twice in last year’s game against the Bulldogs and is the team’s leading rusher with 432 yards (though this does not adjust for sack yardage). San Diego State is still a team dedicated to running the ball first, evidenced by their XX% rush rate over expected.

3. Protect the quarterback.

Pass protection is likely to be another element of the game where the Bulldogs can make life easier if they can get right. After allowing five sacks to San Jose State and two to New Mexico, it may help to build confidence that the Aztecs have been shut out on that front in four different games this fall, including their two most recent losses against Colorado State and the Spartans.

While sophomore linebacker Zyrus Fiaseu has emerged as a disrupter with a team-high 5.5 sacks and a conference-best four forced fumbles, the defensive front has utterly failed to replace the likes of Jonah Tavai and Keshawn Banks as defensive tackle Tupu Alualu is the only other San Diego State defender with more than 1.5 sacks.

Prediction

Have injuries caught up with the Bulldogs? It’s hard to say exactly how big a role ailments to the likes of Mikey Keene, Jacob Spomer, and others have played down the stretch, but they’ve been most vulnerable when the offense isn’t 100%: All three losses in 2023 have come when they’ve scored fewer than 20 points.

The good news is that, at this point, the Aztecs’ offensive inefficiencies seem to be as entrenched as ever. It probably won’t be the prettiest result ever, but expect Fresno State to end the regular season on a high note and bring the Old Oil Can back to the Central Valley.

What are the early college football lines and odds for the bowl games and College Football Playoff. Where are the potential values?

College Football Bowl Game Odds, Opening Lines

Trying to figure out the lines for the bowl games is next to impossible early on.

Who’s playing? Which stars will opt out, which coaches will be leaving, who’s going to care about playing in the exhibitions? Which players – like probably Caleb Williams – will be out?

On the plus side, if you get it right, you can crush the value before the lines start to change – because they will change over the next several weeks, and wildly.

Just like the regular season, I come up with what I think the lines probably should be, and then go in and look after to see if there might be any massive discrepancies.

The real lines will be added when they’re released.

Why Steelers Will Win

The Falcons have hit a wall.

They got by Chicago a few weeks ago, and they’re running well, but there’s nothing happening with the passing attack and the run D has gone bye-bye.

Najee Harris is expected to give it a go with his oblique injury, but it not of if he’s struggling, Benny Snell is a good enough hard runner to count on for a game.

The Falcons have allowed 160 rushing yards or more in four of the last five games, but …

Week 13 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Falcons Will Win

The running game is good enough to take over.

The Steeler defensive front hasn’t been bad – it was a rock against the Saints a few weeks ago – but commit to the run and good things will happen.

There can’t be any straying from what has worked. This isn’t a high-powered attack that wings it around 50 times, but with the 1-2 punch of Cordarrelle Patterson and Tyler Allgeier working the ground attack should hit 150 yards without too much of a problem.

Pittsburgh is 1-5 when allowing 111 rushing yards or more.

What’s Going To Happen

Atlanta gets its bye next week and will overload the backs even more than normal.

Pittsburgh is coming off a good Monday night win over Indianapolis, the team is now +6 in turnover margin in the last three games, and …

It’ll be an entertaining game that will go fast – both teams will keep the clock moving. Pittsburgh won’t be able to get by on the road against the Atlanta ground and pound style in a close fight throughout.
