Colorado Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Buffaloes miss from the Pac-12 slate?

It would’ve been nice to have Cal on the schedule. That’s one of the few teams in the Pac-12 that Colorado – even an improved one under Deion Sanders – can look to for a likely win, but on the plus side, not having to deal with Washington helps.

There are five Pac-12 road games, with dates at Oregon, UCLA, and Utah the biggest problems. However …

Colorado Football Schedule What Really Matters

Unlike most Pac-12 teams, Colorado doesn’t have to deal with a run of three road games in four weeks. Throw in the week off coming on October 21st, and there’s a nice midseason stretch when the team only leaves Boulder once from October 7th to November 17th. That’s when the wins have to start piling up, because …

Colorado Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a rough slate for Coach Prime’s bunch.

The improvements are coming, but there’s still a whole lot of rebuilding to do. Starting out at TCU and then dealing with Nebraska doesn’t exactly ease into the era. Throw in the always testy showdown against Colorado State, and there’s no true layup on the slate.

There are enough winnable games to make a big jump, though. Get by Nebraska and Colorado State, and the Buffs can looks to home games against Stanford and Arizona to get in the mix for six victories and a bowl. Lose any of those, and it’ll be tough.

Why Utah Will Win

The Utes will be doing a little scoreboard watching.

They need Oregon to lose to Oregon State – that starts about 90 minutes before this starts – and then it gets potentially weird if Washington beats Washington State later that night.

First, Utah has to take care of business and roll through a Colorado team about to put a merciful end to its season.

The Buffs are dead last in the nation against the run. That’s a big, BIG problem against the Utah offensive line.

The Utes average over 200 yards per game on the ground and are 6-1 when averaging over 4.5 yards per carry – the one loss coming in the final seconds against Florida.

Colorado allowed 4.5 yards per carry or more in every game but two. It’s about to get hammered on hard, but …

Why Colorado Will Win

Utah struggles on the road.

It’s been a disastrous season, and it would be a heavy lift to get past a team good enough to potentially play for the Pac-12 Championship, but there’s Salt Lake City Utah and there’s everywhere else Utah.

Salt Lake City Utah is 6-0, beat USC, and totally destroyed everyone else. Everywhere else Utah is 2-3 and had to fight to get past Washington State.

For Colorado, it starts with not turning the ball over. The offense might struggle to move the chains, but the multiple turnovers every game are the killer.

The offensive line hasn’t been awful. It has to keep the Utes out of the backfield, the running game has to be decent, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Dead last in the nation in scoring defense. Dead last in the nation in sacks. Dead last in the nation against the run. Dead last in the nation in third down defense. Second-to-last in the nation in total defense.

It’s been a rough run for Colorado. It’s about to add to that total of 232.5 rushing yards per game allowed as Utah starts running, keeps running, and doesn’t stop.

Oregon vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

No one’s stopping the Oregon offense right now.

QB Bo Nix is playing like a possible Heisman candidate, the running game is averaging close to six yards per pop, and Colorado can’t and won’t stop any of it.

The Buffaloes slowed down the Arizona State running game last week – and they didn’t do anything against the passing attack. They were okay against the Oregon State passing game, and got run over for 270 yards.

Oregon can figure out what it wants to do, it won’t have to take any major chances, and the ultra-efficient passing of Nix will convert on just about every third down play against the worst D in the nation in third down stops.

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Colorado Will Win

What can Colorado do to make this interesting?

The passing game hasn’t been bad lately. It doesn’t connect on enough throws, and there might not be enough third down conversions, but JT Shrout has been able to push for over 200 yards in the last two games and the ground game is adding just enough to matter.

The Oregon defense hasn’t been as good as the talent.

The run D got powered on by UCLA and secondary struggled a bit too much against Cal.

It’s going to take a slew of Duck turnovers to give the Buffs any sort of a shot. Oregon gave up two picks last week, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Nah. Oregon might not always be smooth, but it’s not going to screw up enough to give Colorado enough of a chance.

The Duck offense will go on a second quarter scoring burst to take control, Colorado won’t have enough offense to keep up, and Nix will be a machine on third downs in the second half to pull away.

Arizona State vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devils have played far better over the last few weeks since Herm Edwards was fired.

They were able to shock Washington, they pushed USC a bit, and last week the defense held firm against Stanford until late in the heartbreaking 15-14 loss.

What’s been better? The passing game has been sharper – both Emory Jones and Trenton Bourguet have been hitting their throws – the run defense has been a lot better, and the team has managed to be more competitive.

Colorado is still having massive problems defensively. This is the game for the Sun Devils to get going on the ground and own the tempo.

The Buffs are dead last in the nation in third down stops partly because their second-to-last in college football against the run, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Colorado Will Win

Colorado is far better when it can chill on the turnovers.

It found a way to beat Cal even with three giveaways, and it lost to Oregon State 42-9 partly because of four turnovers. Arizona State’s defense doesn’t force enough mistakes and doesn’t come up with enough big plays.

That’s because the defensive front doesn’t generate any pressure and doesn’t come up with enough plays behind the line.

The run D has to hold up. Arizona State doesn’t pound for a ton of big yards on the ground – it has yet to get past 170 against any FBS team. Colorado has be able to force third-and-longs and get that D off the field.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are in the midst of awful seasons. Colorado is a little bit worse.

The Sun Devils have major problems against teams that can throw. Colorado will come up with at least 200 yards.

The Buffaloes have major problems against teams that can run. Arizona State will come up with at least 150 yards.

It’ll be a good, competitive game with Colorado putting up a good fight for a half, but the Arizona State offense will start to be more and more effective as the game goes on.

Colorado vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Colorado Will Win

Break up the Buffaloes.

Good for Colorado – it was having a miserable season stuck in a miserable situation and with no hope for anything but more misery. But the team rose up under interim head coach Mike Sanford and pulled off a stunning 20-13 win over Cal for the first win of the year.

What was different? The defense showed up.

The worst D in college football allowed 500 yards or more in its previous three games, and then it held the Bears to under 300 and generated a slew of big stops.

Oregon State’s offense is good, but it’s not so unstoppable that it’s a sure thing to roll for over 400.

It gave up four picks in each of the two losses, it’s a bit underwhelming lately though the air, and overall it relies more on balance than anything too explosive.

It took a minor miracle to get by Fresno State and a major one to beat Stanford. The 5-2 record is nice, but if Colorado can bring the defense for a second week in a row, it might have a shot.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Colorado offense. It’s still a problem.

The defense might have pulled the win out of the fire against Cal, but the other side turned it over three times – the third three-giveaway game of the season – and it can’t get away with that this week.

Oregon State doesn’t force takeaways, but the run defense has been terrific over the past few weeks, the secondary has been good enough, and it’s not going to have to worry about the Buff attack going off.

Slow and steady can win this race. There’s no Colorado pass rush, so hit the mid-range throws, keep the ball for 35 minutes, get out with a win.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado might not go all the way back to being completely horrible, but it’s not going to have the offense to get back in the game after the balanced Oregon State attack comes up with two early scores.

This won’t be a total wipeout – the Beavers don’t have the O to do that – and there might be a moment of concern in the third quarter, but the stress level should be relatively low as they get bowl eligible.
