Tennessee vs Florida Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

No one is playing better defense than the Vols.

It’s No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense, field goal D, and stopping teams from the outside. Texas was able to get 71 in Knoxville a few days ago, and lost.

No one is hitting threes with any sort of regularity against this bunch, and Florida isn’t sharp enough from the outside to be consistently hot. It doesn’t move the ball around enough to avoid a slew of mistakes.

So how does Florida pull this off?

Why Florida Will Win

To get past the Vols you have to bring the defense to them.

The three losses all came when the threes weren’t dropping, the overall shooting was bad, and the other side moved the ball around really, really well.

Arizona, Kentucky, and Colorado were all able to come up with 12 or more assists – Tennessee has allowed double-digit assists just five other times. Florida has to bake at least 12 of its own turnovers into the cake, but it has to be able to make the extra pass or three.

It’s 0-5 when failing to generate double-digit assists, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, again, you have to be able to D up on the Vols.

They’re good enough on the boards to at least hang around, and they should be able to force enough Tennessee mistakes to generate into easy baskets.

But when needed, the Tennessee defense will show up. Florida will hang around, but it will stall just as it needs that one final push.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Florida Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Gators miss from the SEC slate?

As always the Gators have to play LSU. To make matters worse against a loaded team, it’s on the road. On the positive side, the other game against the West is at home against Arkansas. However, that’s sandwiched between the dates with Georgia and LSU.

Offsetting the road game against LSU is who’s missing. There’s no Alabama to deal with, Texas A&M isn’t on the schedule, and there’s no Auburn, Ole Miss, or Mississippi State.

Florida Football Schedule What Really Matters

The Gators have GOT to win the home dates.

Again, the LSU date is on the road, but the Georgia game – as always – is in Jacksonville. Tennessee has to make the trip to Gainesville, and so does Florida State. That doesn’t mean everything is in easy driving distance of The Swamp, but there are enough to pile up a slew of wins.

There’s a reason the team needs to pull those off …

Florida Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Opening the season at Utah is a problem.

That’s a tough way to kick things off, putting all the pressure on the home game against Tennessee – at least more than there already will be. Lose that, and then things get dicey with road games at Kentucky and South Carolina before dealing with Georgia.

If the Gators can’t get by the Vols, it’s going to take a lot of work to be better than 4-4 – probably more like 3-5 – before dealing with November.

That’s not to say they can’t beat the Wildcats or Gamecocks on the road, but that’s not a given.

It’s Florida. It’s going to come up with a good second season under Billy Napier and it’ll easily go bowling. It’s going to be a fight at times, though.

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl What Happened

Oregon State took over right away, owned all phases, and rolled easily with Ben Gulbranson running for a touchdown and hitting Silas Bolden for a 15-yard score on the way to a 30-0 lead. Florida finally got on the board with a 40-yard field goal in the final minute.

The dangerous Florida running game didn’t go anywhere. It was held to just 39 yards on 33 carries, only broke off a few decent runs, and couldn’t find anything that consistently worked. The Beaver defense lived in the Gator backfield.

Oregon State was up 10-0 early in the second half when its drive stalled. It faked the punt, Jack Colletto rumbled for the first down, and the offense kept the momentum driving for a score – the Bolden touchdown catch.

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl Player of the Game

Deshaun Fenwick, RB Oregon State
Jack Colletto might have made some of the biggest plays – he blocked a punt to go along with his first down off a fake punt – but Fenwick steadily set the tone with 107 yards on 20 carries.

CFN Experts Picks Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl Fun Stats

– Rushing Yards: Oregon State 164 – Florida 39

– Penalties: Florida 11 for 82 yards – Oregon State 7 for 50 yards

– Florida QB Jack Miller completed 13-of-22 passes for 180 yards and ran for 13 yards

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl What It All Means

This is a big deal for Oregon State and head coach Jonathan Smith. He just got a new contract – not that he was under real pressure, but the win makes that look stronger – and now he got the program its first ten-win season since 2006.

Just as big – considering how the Beavers flopped in a loss in last year’s LA Bowl – this it the first bowl win since 2013 and the second since 2008. With this, there’s a shot at finishing in the top 15 in the final polls.

Not to diminish what Oregon State was able to do, but this was a true exhibition game for Florida. It was missing QB Anthony Richardson and a slew of other stars, but this should’ve been a better overall performance.

The defense had its issues all year long, but it wasn’t miserable here. Billy Napier’s offense stalled with the ground game unable to pick up the slack without Richardson. Not having him to run the ball was an issue, but overall this was a flat performance.

Napier will get a bit of a pass for a losing season in his first year, but a loss like this – and Florida’s third straight bowl loss including last year’s rough Gasparilla defeat to UCF – won’t help an impatient fan base.

Florida vs Oregon State SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl 5 Things To Know

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

– It’s the first Power Five vs Power Five matchup of the bowl season, and both teams have a whole lot to prove. Florida is trying to avoid a losing season under first year head coach Billy Napier, and the program needs to close strong after dropping two straight to close the regular season.

Oregon State comes in rolling on a three-game winning streak taking down six of its last seven games. That’s all great, but it’s the nine-win team against the .500 club. It’s the College Football Playoff’s No. 14 team vs one that lost to Vanderbilt. The expectations are on to beat the SEC team. Jonathan Smith was just given a nice new contract worth over $30 million, and now …

Oregon State has to win one of these bowl things after clunking in last year’s LA Bowl. It was stopped by Utah State 24-13 in the program’s first bowl appearance since the 2013 Hawaii. How special is this? The Beavers are 1-3 in bowl games since beating Pitt 3-0 in the 2008 Sun Bowl, and a win would give them their first ten-win season since 2006.

Let’s just say the last two bowl games didn’t go well for Florida. The team was missing most of its parts in the rough blowout loss to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl to close out the 2020 season, and last year it suffered the indignity of losing to UCF 29-17 in the Gasparilla Bowl.

The Las Vegas Bowl could use some fun. Last year’s 20-13 Wisconsin win over Las Vegas was technically close, but it was hardly gripping, the 2020 game was canceled, and before that five of the six games and ten of the previous 12 were decided by double-digits.

Not only is this the first meeting between the two programs, but this is the first time Oregon State faced an SEC team since losing to LSU 22-21 to open the 2004 season – Missouri was in the Big 12 when the two played in 2006.

Including the Fiesta Bowls in Tempe, this is the furthest west the Florida program has been since losing to Troy Aikman and UCLA in the 1987 Aloha Bowl in Hawaii. It beat the eventual Pac-12 champion Utah in the opener. That was the first game against a current Pac-12 team since losing to Washington 34-7 in the 1989 Freedom Bowl.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Florida Will Win The SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl

The running game should still be okay.

The Gators will be missing star QB Anthony Richardson – he caught NFLitis and opted out – but most of the other key parts are around for the offense. The offensive line won’t have guard O’Cyrus Torrence – also preparing for the next level – but overall it’s good enough to pound away for the combination of Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne.

Oregon State’s run defense has been terrific all season long, but it shouldn’t take much to get control in this. The Beavers lost in two of the three games when they allowed 160 yards or more, and Florida has only been held under that four times.

Can Jack Miller get the job done? The former Ohio State Buckeye has talent, he’s more of a pro-style passer than Richardson, and the Gators are getting help from the time off with the receiving corps getting bay more options.

The Florida offense should work, but …

Why Oregon State Will Win The SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl

Yeah, you don’t get better by losing Anthony Richardson.

He’s a special talent with the upside to potentially be a top ten overall pick as the wild card in the 2023 NFL Draft – think a potentially faster Josh Allen with a little bit of time. He’s not alone. Five Gators so far have opted out, and all hands need to be on deck to deal with this Beaver team.

It’s not flashy, but it’s rock-solid with a balanced offense, a great O line, and a defensive front that might not generate much of a pass rush, but holds up well against the run – OSU finished second in the Pac-12 against the run.

Steady matters in this. Florida’s defense is miserable at coming up with third down stops, the run D sometimes doesn’t show up, and Oregon State should be able to pound away.

The Beavers are 8-0 when running for over 175 yards. Florida allows 176 rushing yards per game and is 2-5 when allowing 175 or more.

Why Florida Will Win

Florida has playmakers.

As shocking as the 31-24 loss to Vanderbilt was, the passing game was great – Anthony Richardson threw for 400 yards – and the defense wasn’t all that bad.

It’s all up to the run defense. It didn’t give up 200 yards in six of the last seven games – Georgia was the outlier -and will give up yards here and there, but it should be able to keep Florida State from dominating with its big, gashing runs.

But there will be big, gashing runs from the Seminoles. Florida and Richardson should be able to keep up, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Florida State Will Win

Yeah, the Florida State running game. It’s really, really strong.

The Seminoles have worked their way though the season and now have everything working averaging 5.6 yards per carry or more in five of the last six games. Now they get a Florida defense that doesn’t generate enough pressure in the backfield to be any sort of a problem.

What the Gator D can do is generate takeaways with ten in the last four games and two or more in eight of the last nine. Florida State doesn’t have a turnover problem and isn’t going to give it away enough to matter, if at all.

And then there’s the issue on third downs. Florida State leads the ACC converting 51% of its chances, Florida absolutely miserable at coming up with third down stops, and …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

For all the Florida State love being thrown around lately, the really, really good win since getting by LSU at the beginning of September was against …

A battered Syracuse? Miami? Boston College?

The Seminoles were competitive against Clemson, NC State, and Wake Forest, and lost all three. They’re 7-0 when scoring 35 points or more and 1-3 when they don’t.

Florida has allowed more than 35 points to Tennessee, Georgia, and LSU. Its 6-1 when allowing 28 points or fewer, but …

At home, Florida State will win because the offense will be in control late when it has to come up with two good scoring drives, but 15 on the other side is about to have himself a day.

How To Watch: SEC Network

Why Florida Will Win

Very, very, very quietly, Florida hasn’t been bad.

Georgia and Tennessee sucked all the oxygen out of the SEC East room, but the Gators are putting together a nice first season under Billy Napier. The emphatic road win over Texas A&M was nice, but the performance against South Carolina in a 38-6 win might have been the best of the year considering the opponent.

What’s going so right? The running game that led Louisiana to greatness under Napier’s watch is ripping through everyone but the Dawgs and Vols averaging 225 yards per game.

QB Anthony Richardson and backs Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne are rolling with close to 700 rushing yards over the last two weeks.

The Vanderbilt run defense is having a few issues. South Carolina and Kentucky both ran for over 200 yards in the last two weeks, and …

Bowl Projections

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Vanderbilt is running well, too.

Senior RB Ray Davis has taken up over with two straight huge games to be a steadying force for the attack, QB Mike Wright hit Kentucky for 126 yards, and it all could work against the Gator D.

Florida’s defense was fantastic against South Carolina, but it’s having a rough time on third downs, the pass rush is lacking, and the the run defense hasn’t been consistent enough.

The Commodores should be able to keep up the pace.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Vanderbilt really keep bowl hopes alive?

The regular season finale against Tennessee might put a hard stop to any hopes. That, and the Florida running game.

To overcome the issues on defense and a wildly inconsistent passing game, it’s all about the big yards on the ground. Florida is 6-0 when running for more than 210 yards and 0-4 when it doesn’t.

Vanderbilt has only allowed more than 210 yards twice and neither one was at home. Florida will come up with a big enough running day to get by, but it’ll be in for a battle.
