UCLA vs Washington Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

There was a problem against Oregon last week in a low scoring loss, but it came back roaring against a weak Oregon State team and rolled 94-55.

The offense hasn’t been consistent, and the threes that were there against the Beavers weren’t there against the Ducks, but the offense continues to be brilliant at not turning the ball over and the shooting is usually fine.

As lost as the O can get to 40% from the field, it’s fine.

UCLA is 17-0 when it gets to 40%, and Washington has only allowed under that eight times.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies bounced back fro a rough four-game losing streak with a decent win over Washington State to keep tournament hopes alive – it needs this at home.

The defense is great at forcing mistakes and coming up with takeaways. It has to lead the way to easy points and a whole lot of production on the move.

The Huskies have to shoot well. Even with a strong defense they don’t overcome bad shooting days, and UCLA has allowed seven of the last nine teams to hit 40% or better from the field.

Again, that has to start with the defense and takeaways, but …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA is one of the stingiest teams in the nation when it comes to turnovers. However, it’s the team’s third straight road game and it’s dealing with a desperate team that has to come up with something splashy.

No, the Bruins aren’t going to roll through Washington like they did against Oregon State, but they won’t be flat in the clutch like they were against Oregon.

Washington will crank up the defensive intensity to stay alive, but it just won’t shoot well enough. It’s struggling to get to 40% on a consistent basis, and it would be nice to get more from three.

UCLA is going to struggle, but it’ll get the one scoring burst needed to survive. It’s not going to give up the turnovers Washington will need.

Baylor vs Texas Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

The Bears continue to scuffle a little bit – the consistency isn’t there – but they’ve been able to win three straight including a relatively dominant win over Kansas.

They’re doing a great job on the move, moving the ball around as well as any team in the Big 12, and they shoot threes a whole lot better than they have over the last few games.

They rolled over Texas a few weeks ago by hitting 50% from the field, rolling on the free throw line, and pulling off a great defensive performance that didn’t allow much of anything easy.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Will Win

Texas has been on fire from the outside at times and has done an amazing job of generating second chance points over the last few weeks.

No, the threes were there in the win over TCU – the Longhorns hit just 1-of-14 shots from the outside – but still won owning the interior and going up with 13 offensive rebounds.

They followed up the TCU game by hitting 63% from the field and going off from three. It all has to work to beat Baylor.

They’ve only lost twice at home, and both times were a tad strange. Texas Tech shut down the Longhorns cold, and Kansas State hung around and pulled survived a low-scoring fight.

And …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Texas is killing it on defense.

It’s fourth in the nation in scoring D, it’s allowing teams to hist just 41% from the field, and it’s doing an amazing job when it comes to not turning the ball over.

Again, it all has to work to get by a Baylor team that’s attacking and stepping up its own defensive game.

This is going to be fun.

Kansas State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcats continue to give it a push.

They’re struggling overall defensively, but they’re bombing away with the most threes in the Big 12 and with the best defense against the three. They always have a puncher’s chance.

This isn’t going to be a shootout – Texas Tech won’t allow it. So if Kansas State can be decent from the outside and get to the free throw line – it’s not bad when it gets its chances – it can keep this close.

Texas Tech isn’t all that strong from the free throw line, it’s not all that great from three and it’s not totally dominant at stopping the three. And …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raider defense is a rock.

No, it doesn’t shut down teams cold from the outside, but it’s always a grind to generate points against the pressure and style.

TCU was able to win 69-66 at home, but it had to hit half of its shots to do it. Oklahoma won at home against the Red Raiders a few weeks ago, but it had to make 49% of its shots to do it.

It’s possible to beat Texas Tech without going off from the field, but that’s not happening lately. It’s going to take a phenomenal shooting day for Kansas State to make this a fight.

Kansas State is the second-worst shooting team in the Big 12 making 42% of its shots.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech doesn’t lose at home.

It’s 5-7 on the road, but the team takes things up to a whole other level at United Supermarkets going 17-0.

These two played in mid-January up in Manhattan, and Texas Tech rolled 62-51 with the defense stopping the Wildcats from the outside. The D will come up with a big performance at home.

Iowa vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

It’s been a rough few weeks for Northwestern, but what is it doing right?

It lost four out of its last five games, but it rose up and was on from three in the win over Nebraska, the defense hasn’t been all that bad, and there aren’t enough turnovers to be a problem.

The Wildcats are second in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio, giving it up ten times or fewer 13 times in the last 19 games. The offense is good at passing the ball around and setting up decent opportunities, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Iowa Will Win

Yeah, Northwestern is No. 2 in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio. Iowa is No. 1.

Northwestern just doesn’t shoot well. It was good against Nebraska, but who isn’t? It’s been a fight to get to 40% from the field – only getting there once in the last six games – and forget about putting 70 points on the board lately.

On the flip side, Iowa has won three straight and six of the last seven with the offense shooting well from the outside in the last two games, and with the scoring punch coming in all areas.

Iowa has a nice mix of positives happening right now. The scoring is there, the turnovers are at a minimum, and the threes are falling. Northwestern can’t handle any of it.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

As mediocre as Northwestern has been, it’s not getting totally annihilated on the road.

It’s going to lose – it has no chance of keeping up with the Hawkeyes – but the defense and style will be just strong enough to keep this from getting out of hand.

It’s going to take Iowa going dead-cold from the outside, and that’s not going to happen. It’s not going to give up the ball enough for easy Northwestern points.

Ohio State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

Ohio State is too good at both ends of the floor on the inside.

It’s second in the Big Ten in shooting percentage, it’s doing a nice job from the outside, and the defense is solid at generating blocked shots and is okay on the defensive boards.

Maryland will shoot plenty of threes, but it doesn’t make enough of them and the defense has a hard time getting out and forcing mistakes and stopping threes.

The Terps have allowed 40% shooting or better in each of the last eight games and are getting bombed on too easily at times. Ohio State wasn’t on from the outside against Iowa, but it’s been effective against everyone else over the last month.

Basically, Maryland will have a hard time keeping up, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Maryland Will Win

Maryland won’t have to worry about turnovers or mistakes, and the defense should be better than it was the first time around.

The Buckeyes hit over 50% from the field and made 11 threes, and that’s almost certainly not happening again. The Terp offense failed to get to 40% from the field, but if the attack can force its way to the free throw line it’ll have a shot.

Ohio State’s defense might be decent overall, but it doesn’t force mistakes. Maryland should be able to attack the rim, and even if it doesn’t generate points, it should get fouled enough to matter.

However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State is shooting too well.

Maryland needs to own the free throw line – it’s great when it gets there – but the Buckeyes have been a machine lately with 71 free throw attempts over the last three games.

Maryland needs to make lots and lots of free throws along with making 45% of its shots from the field.

Neither will happen.

Illinois vs Michigan Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

It’s been way too much of a battle for the Illini lately, but if you believe in patterns, they’re due.

They follow up losses with good performances and wins, and after going win-loss-win-loss-win-loss, they’re due to get it back and be on the right side of a win.

To do that they need the defense to be a whole lot stronger.

Ohio State couldn’t miss inside or out in its win, Rutgers was solid at getting to the rim, and Purdue did whatever it wanted. But that’s the deal with this team – you have to shoot really, really well to beat it.

That goes with the pattern thing the other way. Michigan is win-loss-win-loss-win, and it’s due for a loss if it doesn’t shoot the lights out.

It only made 37% of its shots the first time around. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Michigan Will Win

Yeah, yeah, yeah, enough of the silly momentum-patterns thing.

The reality to that way of looking at teams is that it means one thing – they’re inconsistent.

Illinois is painfully off offensively on the road over the last few weeks – one solid performance against Michigan State aside.

It’s not making its threes – that’s a problem at home, too – it’s not coming up with enough offensive rebounds to make up for the issues, and there are a few too many cold streaks.

Michigan can’t hit its threes lately, but it’s doing a phenomenal job of stopping teams from doing anything on the outside. It has the ability to load up on the boards, it should be able to pack it in on the inside, and …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan will be better at home against Illinois than it was on the road in the first meeting.

Illinois doesn’t have to be great from three to succeed – it cranks up lots of them and hopes the volume will get it done – but the wins usually come against teams that can’t do enough to hold up inside.

At home, Michigan is going to be tough enough on the defensive interior to survive.

SMU vs Houston Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

This is one very, very dangerous team for Houston for one key reason – rebounds.

The Cougars are dominant on the boards, but they’ll give up offensive rebounds once in a while. How did they lose to the Mustangs 85-83 a few weeks ago?

SMU was able to win the first time around despite being -8 in rebounding margin and allowing the Cougars to hit 54% from the field.

The Mustang defense has been terrific over the last four games since then – no one has been able to get to 67 points – and the rebounding has been terrific with dominant games against East Carolina, Memphis, and Tulsa on the offensive glass.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Houston Will Win

Yeah, the SMU defense has been fantastic, but the offense is sputtering a bit.
