Notre Dame at Virginia Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

For all of Notre Dame’s problems, it doesn’t give away easy points.

There’s no chance against Virginia if you make a lot of mistakes, and Notre Dame doesn’t do that – it’s No. 1 in the nation in fewest turnovers. The formula is simple – continue to be careful with the ball, get hot from three right away, and don’t put the Cavaliers on the line.

The Irish have the right make-up the keep this close, but …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Virginia Will Win

Notre Dame is awful on the boards.

It’s awful at forcing mistakes for easy points, it doesn’t do anything on the move, and the defense from three isn’t sharp enough.

Virginia doesn’t have to push much to get through this. As long as it plays its normal style – don’t turn it over, be patient for the easy shot, and force the Irish to try shooting from the outside – this shouldn’t be relatively easy.

All that, and …

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

You have as many road wins as Notre Dame does. Houston is the only team to beat Virginia in Charlottesville.

Notre Dame hasn’t been great at home, either, but it’s just not able to find anything to consistently work when it travels. On the plus side for the road team, this should be a low scoring game with plenty of chances available to make something happen, but the cliché will fit.

A six-point Virginia lead will feel like it’s 20.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Virginia Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cavaliers miss from the ACC slate?

You can’t miss everyone, but it’s about as good as it gets.

The Cavaliers don’t have to deal with Clemson, Florida State, or Pitt. That’s great, not playing Wake Forest and that offense is always good, and if things go as expected, missing Syracuse isn’t too bad.

It would’ve been nice to miss NC State, and it would’ve been wonderful to not go to Miami, but it’s not a bad group to miss. To make it even better, there’s no Notre Dame, either.

However …

Virginia Football Schedule What Really Matters

After dealing with the toughest season possible, it would’ve been nice to start 2023 totally fresh with a few easy wins to get back into the on-field groove.

Nope.

The Cavaliers have to kick things off against Tennessee, follow it up with a dangerous James Madison team, and the have to go to Maryland. It wouldn’t be a shock to go 0-3 before getting into the ACC season, but …

Virginia Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Again, the ACC season isn’t all that bad.

If the program can refresh in a hurry, there’s a chance to make some noise if it can just get through September.

The Boston College game is winnable and playing William & Mary helps. However, the Cavaliers have to go on the road for three road games in four weeks in the back half and have a run of four road dates in six games.

It’s going to take a few upsets to get to six wins and bowl eligibility, but if they can own November, they can get there.

NC State at Virginia Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

You don’t beat Virginia unless you can maximize every possession and shoot the lights out for stretches. NC State might not be consistent from the outside, but it’s shooting well enough to make the Cavaliers work.

It’s on a great run of eight wins in the last nine games because it’s not turning the ball over, it’s fantastic and generating point on the move and capitalizing on everyone else’s mistakes, and it’s scoring more than anyone in the ACC.

Virginia isn’t the Virginia of old – the defense is still great, but it’s happy to get into scoring battles. That’s a problem with NC State – the Cavaliers don’t want anything to do with getting into a firefight with the Wolfpack, but ….

Why Virginia Will Win

How do you beat NC State? You D up from midrange to deep.

No one in the ACC is better at getting vertical and scoring on the move. It’s fine in a half court set, but it’s not nearly as strong.

NC State is 11-0 when hitting 46% or better from the field, and it’s 19-2 when making 40% or more of its shots. Yeah, Virginia is pivoting to a more offensive style of play now, but it still knows how to clamp down hard.

Getting to 40% from the field on the Cavaliers isn’t a given.

They lost one game at home to Houston back in December when the outside shooting wasn’t there and the team overall shot a season home low 41%.

What’s Going To Happen

NC State is dominant at home – it only lost once to Pitt back in early December – but it’s gettable on the road. It’s playing great lately and it has the ability to pull this off if it can stretch the Cavalier defense a bit, but Virginia will coma up with a great performance at home.

That Virginia Tech loss was tough, but now the defense and three point shooting will crank up a notch.

Virginia vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers have found their groove.

The offense has been cranking it up more than normal, the defense came through big in Syracuse to keep the winning streak going, and they’re not having problems making things happen on the road.

They’re a party at home with the O, but they’re business on the road with the D.

Expect this to be a lower scoring game than the 78-68 win over the Hokies in Charlottesville a few weeks ago. Not to go totally cliché with every point will come at a premium, but Virginia Tech isn’t just okay at coming up with free throws, and it’s not strong enough from the field to pay off.

The Hokies are 6-8 on when they don’t shoot 51%. and this is Virginia. It only allowed two teams to shoot better than 49% this year, and Syracuse was one of them.

But …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Not shockingly, this is a far different Hokie team at home.

How many true road games has Virginia Tech won? As many as you have. It’s 0-7 away from home, and 10-2 when it’s in the friendly confines. And why? It shoots far, far better.

It doesn’t come up with enough takeaways to crank up the transition points, but it doesn’t make mistakes and it’s not going to give away easy baskets.

Virginia is beatable. It’s going to come down to winning on the boards, managing every possession, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Virginia Tech get enough free throws to matter?

They don’t need to shoot a ton, but they need enough to at least play along in what should be a relatively low scoring fight. In the first meeting Virginia hit 12-of-13 free throws.

Virginia Tech made all of its free throws. All two of them.

It’ll be close throughout, Virginia Tech will have its chances to pull away, but it won’t be able to stop Virginia’s ball movement in clutch late situations.

Virginia vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers are rolling, and they’re scoring.

It’s still going full Virginia and isn’t turning the ball over, it controls the clock, and overall it’s doing the little things right, but it’s also got the O working with 76 points or more in each of its last three games.

That might not seem like a ton, but it’s making everything from the field, it’s doing a great job from three, and Syracuse can’t stop any of it.

The Orange have a bad mix happening. It doesn’t take enough threes, it’s not rebounding well, and for all the good things its defense does, it’s not forcing mistakes.

However …

Why Syracuse Will Win

Can the Orange keep the score down?

They’re 10-0 when allowing fewer than 72 points – Virginia averages under 71 per game.

They played well in the first meeting – a 73-66 Cavalier win – but they couldn’t hit their free throws and buckled a bit too often with turnovers. They have to slow the pace down as much as possible, can’t let Virginia get on the move, and they have to take a few more threes.

Syracuse makes them when it takes them, so being patient in this and working for the right shot isn’t a bad thing. But …

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse is 1-8 when allowing 73 points or more, and one of those losses was to Virginia.

All three Cavalier losses this year came when it scored fewer than 70 points, but it also took something a bit off-kilter in those three games for Pitt, Miami, and Houston to come up with the wins.

Pitt didn’t put anyone on the line, Houston didn’t make any mistakes, and Miami’s D forced Virginia to shoot under 40% for the only time all year.

The Cavaliers will move the ball too well and be too sharp.

Pitt vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

Pitt has been a disappointment coming off the ACC championship season, and it starts with an offense that can’t seem to get anything consistently going.

It doesn’t have to do a whole lot to worry about, though, against a Virginia team that doesn’t have enough of an offense to worry about.

Yeah, the Cavalier passing game clicked against North Carolina, but everyone looks like Tennessee against that group. The O averages just 18 points per game, it’s the worst in the ACC in time of possession, and Pitt should be able to take advantage of both things.

It’s time for the Panther offense to start doing more and getting the ground game back, but …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Virginia Will Win

Pitt isn’t exactly lighting it up.

The offense was inconsistent early in the year, and it has good parts to find ways to keep things moving, but there hasn’t been enough of a commitment to the ground game to take over.

Kedon Slovis and the passing attack have been underwhelming, and Virginia has the defense to keep the score low and the game close.

What’s been the problem? The Cavaliers don’t have enough from the passing game that was so great throughout last year, but they should be able to take some chances.

Turnovers have been a problem for the UVa O, but they’ve slowed over the last two games. Pitt – even with all the pressure it applies – hasn’t come up with a takeaway over the last two games and has just three in the last six.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia has GOT to keep the turnovers to a bare minimum.

This is going to be a low scoring battle with every mistake becoming a massive deal.

Can Pitt hit enough passes? Can Virginia find enough of a running game to keep up? It’s not going to be anything pretty, but the Panthers will commit enough to the ground attack to get a tough win and get bowl eligible.
