Kansas at Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas isn’t exactly back into national championship-level mode, but it’s not far off.

It’s playing better than it did over a rough losing stretch a few weeks ago, the rebounding is there, and the three-point shooting is back.

This is hardly a team that relies on the three – it’s way too good at forcing takeaways and converting off the mistakes – but when it’s hitting from the outside, forget it.

Kansas is 16-0 when hitting 35% or better from the outside, and 5-5 when it doesn’t. It has to keep the offense moving, make the extra pass, and convert off the Oklahoma State turnovers that are sure to be there – at least 12 of them.

However …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State has been a killer at guarding the three.

It’s 1-7 when allowing teams to hit better than 33% from three – granted, Kansas was one of those teams, but it only won by two in Lawrence even though it shot the lights out – and it’s 15-2 when allowing teams to hit fewer than that.

At home, the Cowboy defense has been amazing over the last several games – Texas Tech was the only team to hit better than 30% from three in Gallagher-Iba, and it lost – but more than anything else, the offense is making just about everything at home.

It’s unbeaten in Stillwater when making more than 42% from the field, and the Kansas defense has allowed more than that in two of its last three road games.

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s playing with more confidence right now than Oklahoma State?

Granted, there haven’t been a ton of great wins over the recent run, but it just came off a terrific performance in a 64-56 win at Iowa State.

The best defense in the Big 12 will be great at home, the rebounds will be there, and it’ll be a terrific rematch win after losing the Jayhawks at the end of 2022.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Oklahoma State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cowboys miss from the Big 12 slate?

The overall Big 12 schedule is favorable, and this year, not having to play Texas is a big help. That’s it for the dates with the Longhorns, who are off to the SEC in 2024.

Oklahoma State plays all four of the league’s new programs – more on that in a moment – so that means all four teams off the schedule are Big 12 mainstays. This year, missing Texas Tech should be a huge plus, not facing Baylor isn’t bad, and if there’s any sort of a repeat of 2022, TCU being off the slate is huge.

Oklahoma State Football Schedule What Really Matters

There’s not a lot to complain about with the Big 12 schedule. It plays all four of the new teams – BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – and while they’re not going to be layups, they’re still coming building up into the Big 12 world.

Even better, there are just four conference road games, and two of them are against Iowa State and West Virginia – the two Big 12 programs that didn’t go bowling last season.

The only down side is the back-to-back road road games at UCF and Houston late in the year. But Oklahoma has to come to Stillwater, and so does Kansas State.

Oklahoma State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

There’s no excuse not to rock with this schedule.

The Cowboys are either missing a slew of strong Big 12 teams or hosting the others, going to Arizona State in non-conference plays isn’t as dangerous as it seems, and while South Alabama will be a sneaky-tough out, there’s no real reason to be anything less 8-1 going into the Oklahoma game – and 9-0 is a more than reasonable goal.

TCU vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

TCU might have lost on the road to Mississippi State, but it hasn’t been all that bad on the road.

It has the style – with a toughness on defense and stinginess on offense – to hold up in a shocking blowout over Kansas and a tight battle with Baylor on the road over the last few weeks.

No one in America is better at creating transition points, and that comes from the defensive boards and a slew of takeaways.

Oklahoma State is the worst team in the Big 12 in turnovers giving up around 14 points per game, and it’s just okay on the offensive glass.

The team isn’t built to get into a track meet with the Horned Frogs but …

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Stop the fast break points, stop TCU, at least in this.

The Horned Frogs are about attacking and getting to the rim. The defense might be amazing at guarding from the perimeter, but the offense doesn’t take or make threes.

Oklahoma State’s defense is fantastic from the outside, but it won’t have to stretch its style too much. Pack it in a bit, don’t hurry anything offensively, and make this into a half-court game – it can do that at home.

What’s Going To Happen

TCU has to crank up the scoring to pull this off.

It’s 13-0 when it scores 75 points or more and 15-2 when it scores more than 67 points. Oklahoma State is great at keeping games in the high 60s and low 70s, allowing only five teams to score 70 or more.

The Cowboys will dictate the tempo at home and won’t let TCU get its O rolling.

Wisconsin 24, Oklahoma State 17: Guaranteed Rate Bowl what happened, player of the game, and what it all means

Wisconsin beat Oklahoma State 24-17 to win the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. What happened, who was the player of the game, and what does it all mean?

Guaranteed Rate Bowl What Happened

It got interesting. Wisconsin was rolling right along with touchdown runs from Chez Mellusi and Braelon Allen as part of a 24-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. It was dominating the time of possession battle, the defense wasn’t having a problem, and then Oklahoma State got hot.

– The Cowboys took a 7-3 lead on an 84-yard catch and run for a score from Stephon Johnson, but that would be about it until a ten-play drive in the early fourth finished with a 4th-and-goal push pass for a score to Ollie Gordon.

The Badgers stopped another long drive and forced a field goal to keep a 24-17 lead. They had to give the ball back, but Cedrick Dort picked off a Garret Rangel pass and the offense was able to run out the clock.

Jim Leonhard remained the interim head coach for Wisconsin, but Luke Fickell was on the sidelines helping the cause. The Badgers played like the Badgers with their physical style, holding on to the ball for close to 38 minutes.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Player of the Game

Braelon Allen, RB Wisconsin
The star back was questionable, but he played running 22 times for 116 yards and a score.

CFN Experts Picks CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Fun Stats

– Wisconsin outgained Oklahoma State 258 yards to 52. The Badgers averaged 5.5 yards per carry.

– Chase Wolf completed 16-of-26 passes for 116 yards and a score with a pick for Wisconsin, and Garret Rangel completed 14-of-31 passes for 229 yards and two scores with two picks for the Cowboys.

– Wisconsin punter Andy Vujnovich averaged 46.7 yards per punt, put four of his seven kicks inside the 20, and ran for 13 yards and a first down on a fake punt.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl What It All Means

It was a rough year for Wisconsin. It underwhelmed when it needed to rock, it fired its head coach, and it went through an overhaul and a change for the program with a new era for 2023.

But the offense ran well, the defense held up in the end, and after all of that this season, Wisconsin played like Wisconsin. With the win, the program is on a run of 21 straight winning seasons and eight bowl wins in the last nine years.

Oklahoma State didn’t have a whole slew of key players, the season collapsed, and yet it made one great late push to show the fire and fight to almost pull off a second straight massive comeback in a bowl game.

After winning five of its last six bowl games and with an 11-5 post-season record under Mike Gundy, the team did what it could in this and made it close. Even with all of the problems and disappointments this year, it was a 17th straight winning season under Gundy.

Wisconsin vs Oklahoma State Guaranteed Rate Bowl 5 Things To Know

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

– Here’s the big test to see just how much the Wisconsin system works. It was a massively disappointing season with an early loss to Washington State, Paul Chryst being fired after an ugly loss to Illinois, and with losses to Iowa and Minnesota ruining the hope of possibly slipping into the Big Ten Championship in a mediocre West.

Jim Leonhard is still around to be the interim head coach, but it’s Luke Fickell’s show from here on – and he’s already bringing in the talent. Unfortunately for the Badgers, the new guys aren’t there yet, and way too many key players are gone either opting out, hurt, or transferring.

It’s not quite as bad for Oklahoma State, but a season that started out great with at 5-0 – and 6-1 with a strong 43-40 loss to TCU as the only blemish – went south fast. The offense stopped, the team lost four of the last five, and now it comes in limping with opt-outs and transfers hitting the defensive side and QB Spencer Sanders and RB Dominic Richardson taking off through the transfer portal.

Oklahoma State is one of the best bowl teams in the business going 21-11 since beating TCU in the 1944 Cotton. Head coach Mike Gundy has been a massive part of that, leading the way to five wins in the last six, and six of the last eight, including a wild comeback win over Notre Dame in the 2021 Fiesta.

– Wisconsin has been an even better bowl team lately, but that was mostly under Paul Chryst. It dropped the 2020 to Justin Herbert and Oregon in the Rose Bowl, but that’s been the only blip going 7-1 in the last eight including a grinding 20-13 win over Arizona State in last year’s Las Vegas.

The bowl was the Cheez-It, and the Insight, and the Cactus, and the Buffalo Wild Wings, and the Copper. This is the second year as the Guaranteed Rate with the 2020 game canceled and Minnesota running over West Virginia 18-6 last year.

Considering the 10-7 TCU overtime win over Cal in the 2018 version might have been the ugliest sporting event ever – seriously – the 43-42 West Virginia over Arizona State in 2016 was the lone strong game since 2012.

CFN Experts Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Wisconsin Will Win The Guaranteed Rate Bowl

Remembering that the Badgers are without a whole team full of players, they should still be able to blast a bit.

For all of the good things the Oklahoma State defense all year – great on third downs, solid at getting into the backfield – it can be run on. Kansas went off, West Virginia ran for 250 yards, and on the year, the team is 1-5 when allowing 150 rushing yards or more.

As mediocre as Wisconsin has been all year, it ran for 150 yards or more against everyone but Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. When the team got to 175 yards it went 6-1 with the lone loss coming to Ohio State.

Get the big guys up front into a groove, hand it off to anyone who’s back there – hopefully for the Badgers it’s Braelon Allen – and then rely on a defense that’s not going to have too many problems with the struggling Oklahoma State offense.

With all of that said …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Oklahoma State Will Win The Guaranteed Rate Bowl

Seriously? You think this Wisconsin team that sputtered and coughed all year is going to suddenly be better after losing a boatload of top veterans and talents?

Yeah, the Badgers will want to get running right away, but it’s not like Oklahoma State – and everyone else in the building – doesn’t know that. At some point there needs to be a completed forward pass, and that’s asking for veteran Chase Wolf to at least be okay.

And no, the Badger defense isn’t going to be its normal self – the loss of Keeanu Benton on the inside is a killer. Even without RB Dominic Richardson around, the Cowboys are going to still be grinding it out with the offensive line a possible plus and because …

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense has gone weird.

It was great over the first half of the season with lots of yards and without a ton of mistakes. The team was 6-1, everything was in place to be in the Big 12 Championship mix, and then it all went wrong.

Over the last month the Cowboys have gone 1-3, the offense hasn’t scored more than 20 points after not scoring fewer than 34 in the first six games, and  the turnovers kicked in with 13 in four weeks.

West Virginia’s defense hasn’t been anything special, but the offense has a decent balance, there’s no problem controlling the clock, and great things happen when the running game works.

The team is 4-0 when it runs for 200 yards or more …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

And West Virginia is 0-7 when it doesn’t get to 200 yards. Oklahoma State allowed over 200 rushing yards just three times, and it’s 6-0 when it allows fewer than 150.

But now it’s time for the Cowboy offense to get going.

Again, the yards are there, but the points aren’t. The West Virginia defense allowed 31 points or more in six of the last seven games, and most importantly for OSU, the takeaways aren’t there with just three in the last five games.

To keep harping on this, giveaways are the massive problem. Oklahoma State can’t stop screwing up – it’s 0-3 when giving it up more than twice, but all three were on the road.

This is at home, the offense will come up with over 400 yards, and …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma State will get an uneven – but fun – win.

The offense might still have problems closing out drives, and the attack will stall a bit too much, but there won’t be the mistakes of the last several weeks to screw everything up.

West Virginia will keep up the pace with a good day from the passing game, but the defense won’t be able to hold on.

The Cowboys will close out the regular season 7-0 at home.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Did the Cowboys really stop the slide?

They couldn’t get the offense scoring against Kansas State and Kansas on the road in two puzzling losses, and the struggles against Iowa State and its defense were expected. However, the defense was able to step up with five takeaways.

Oklahoma was able to avoid turnovers in the loss to West Virginia last week, but it’s having problems hanging on to the ball with nine giveaways in the previous four games.

The defense shouldn’t be a problem. The offense needs to get the ground game going right away against a Sooner defense that’s been pounded on for close to 500 yards over the last two weeks, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense has crashed.

Yeah, the win over Iowa State was nice, but again, it wasn’t because the O worked – it came up with just 244 yards and couldn’t get the passing attack working.

And yeah, Oklahoma has had a few turnover problems, but Oklahoma State’s attack can’t stop giving it away. The Cowboy O moved the ball well enough against Kansas, but the four turnovers were devastating. That was coming off the mistake-filled shutout loss to Kansas State as part of a run of 12 turnovers in the last five games.

And Oklahoma needs them.

The Sooner defense might not be a rock, but it’s been great at forcing mistakes – eight takeaways in the last four games – to help out the offensive side that’s rumbling on the ground.

The Sooner passing game might be hit-or-miss, but Eric Gray and the rushing attack have been stellar.

Hold serve on D, with the turnover battle, run Gray, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The rough first season under Brent Venables could quickly take a turn for the positive by winning the Bedlam Series rivalry showdown over the Cowboys. The program is well past just being happy with being bowl eligible, but for now that’s not a bad mark to hit.

Oklahoma State’s offense will have too many problems against the OU defensive front that will get behind the line, Gray will be great, and the turnovers on both sides will matter.
