Baker Mayfield saves Cardinals from another opponent player of the week

Baker Mayfield was selected over the Niners’ Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey.

Three this season an opposing player has won conference player of the week honors after facing the Arizona Cardinals. After San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw four touchdown passes and running back Christian McCaffrey had 187 total yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns in a 45-29 win over the Cardinals in Week 15, it looked like it could happen a fourth time.

It didn’t. The NFL announced its conference players of the week for Week 15 and neither Purdy nor McCaffrey won NFC offensive honors. Instead, it was Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who passed for 381 yards an four touchdowns in a 34-20 win over the Green Bay Packers. He had a perfect passer rating of 158.3 in the game.

Mayfield became just the third player in NFL history to pass for 375 or more yards, have four or more touchdown passes and a perfect passer rating in a road game.

It is deserving.

McCaffrey won player of the week for Week 4 against the Cardinals. Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase won it for the AFC in Week 5 after facing the Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams most recently won NFC offensive honors for his Week 12 game against Arizona.

The Week 15 conference players of the week are all below.

WR Marquise Brown’s heel injury concerning

Brown went without a catch for the second straight game.

Arizona Cardinals receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has gone catchless in each of the last two games but has been playing with a nagging heel injury that has plagued him for the last month.

He has not been able to finish the last two games.

His nagging injury is a cause for concern for head coach Jonathan Gannon.

“I am (concerned). It’s been going on for a little bit and he’s trying to grind through. He’s a warrior and we need him, but if he can’t go, he can’t go,” he said after the Cardinals’ 45-29 loss to San Francisco on Sunday. “Obviously that hurts us because he’s a good player. So, have to just make sure we’re doing a good job during the week and getting him ready to get to Sunday.”

Brown said the plan was him to be on a snap count, going in and out of the game against the Niners.

“It got to the point where I just couldn’t go anymore,” he said.

Gannon explained why Brown, even when he isn’t productive, is needed on the field.

“I don’t know what Hollywood’s stat sheet was, but he’s affecting the game in a positive way because of how you have to defend him and that opens up some other guys to do some things,” he said. “So, run game as well. You know what I mean? When you play shell defense because you’re worried about the receivers and the run game should come alive a little bit.”

Brown, in a contract year, has 51 receptions for 574 yards and four touchdowns.

49ers clinch NFC West with 45-29 win over Cardinals

The Niners’ 45-29 win over the Cardinals wrapped up the NFC West title and eliminated the Cardinals from postseason contention.

The NFC West race is over, at least for the division title. San Francisco 49ers  clinched the NFC West division title with a 45-29 victory over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Week 15.

The win improved them to 11-3. They remain the top seed in the NFC.

Their win in Arizona was their sixth straight. They are 5-0 in division play.

They were shorthanded on defense but their offense dominated.

Quarterback Brock Purdy had four touchdown passes in the win, bringing his total to 29 with seven interceptions.

Running back Christian McCaffrey had another huge game against Arizona. After 177 yards from scrimmage in Week 4 and scoring four touchdowns, he piled up 187 total yards and scored three times on Sunday in Week 15.

The NFL’s leading rusher increased his total to 1,292 through 14 games. He had over 100 rushing yards in both games against the Cardinals.

With the division title wrapped up, now it is a race for remaining atop the NFC as the No. 1 seed, earning a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Their final three games are at home against the Baltimore Ravens, on the road against the Washington Commanders and at home against the Los Angeles Rams.

Cardinals officially eliminated from postseason contention

The Cardinals’ 11th loss of the season officially knocks them out of postseason contention.

It was an inevitability but it has finally happened. With their 45-29 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Arizona Cardinals were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. The 49ers clinched the NFC West title with the win.

The Cardinals sit at 3-11 on the season. They are winless in five division games. They are 2-7 against the NFC.

For draft purposes, they are the third-worst team in the league. The Carolina Panthers are 2-12 and the New England Patriots are 3-11 like the Cardinals but have a weaker strength of schedule.

No one expected the Cardinals to compete for the playoffs this season. They entered without quarterback Kyler Murray as he recovered from a torn ACL, had a rookie head coach and general manager, lost some of their most talented players in the offseason and didn’t add top-end talent.

Now mathematically eliminated, the coaching staff and leadership will need to find ways to maintain the focus of the players on the roster.
