Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022

This thing can’t get going, and worse yet, it’s taking a step back.

Herm Edwards was a bit of an outside-the-box choice, and he’s been okay with two eight-wins seasons, a seven-win campaign, and that 2-2 2022 season, but last year was when it was supposed to all take off.

Arizona State had the experience, the quarterback, the talent, and the years of rebuilding under Edwards to be a threat to win the Pac-12 title, but the team fell flat far too often in an uneven run.

Issues off the field, big losses to the transfer portal – BIG losses – and with the Pac-12 South looking like it’s about to make a turn up – USC is about to be a thing, Arizona is better, UCLA should be stronger – this is a true make-or-break year.

All that, and the call of Edwards over current Florida head coach Billy Napier is looming larger now.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

There might have been a wave of players gone to the draft and the transfer portal, but Edwards and ASU were active on the other end. The starting 22 should be good, the schedule is manageable, and the expectations now – compared to last season – aren’t there.

Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022: Offense

The offense certainly wasn’t bad – the running game was terrific at times – but the offense only averaged 386 yards and 28 points per game, the passing attack wasn’t explosive enough, and there were times when the whole thing stalled.

QB Jayden Daniels is gone now to LSU, leading rusher Rachaad White is off to the NFL, top receiver Ricky Pearsall and LV Bunkley-Shelton are taking off,  and the best offensive lineman – Kellen Diesch – is gone. However …

The offense will be fine thanks to the transfer portal. Alabama transfer Paul Tyson and Florida transfer Emory Jones might not be Daniels, but they can play – Jones is a veteran who’s been through the big SEC games.

The receiving corps is a concern with all the big losses, but getting Cam Johnson from Vanderbilta helps. As long as the passing game is efficient, all will be fine because …

The running game should be terrific. Losing White and his hard-running style is hardly a plus, but Wyoming transfer Xazavian Valladay is a great talent who should go off. Again, Emory Jones can run – he took off for 759 yards last year for the Gators.

Even with all the changes across the board, the O line will be fine. There isn’t a Diesch, but help from the transfer portal and decent returning options will form a solid group.

Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022: Defense

The Sun Devil D balled out. It might not have been a huge season overall, but the defense lived up to the expectations, leading the Pac-12 in total defense and scoring D.

The transfer portal didn’t hit this group as hard as graduation did. However, several key parts are back, the work through the transfer portal might even have upgraded areas – the secondary got a huge boost – and there’s no reason to think the production can’t keep going.

Start in the secondary. The pass defense picked off 16 passes, it was among the best in the Pac-12, and it reloaded at safety with Hawaii transfer Khoury Bethley leading the way, and with help coming in to boost up the corner options.

The front seven might have lost parts – especially on the line – but again, things should be okay with help from the transfer portal. Mississippi State’s Rodney Groce has the potential to break out in the linebacking corps, and Nesta Jade Silvera is a veteran big-body insta-fit for the interior.

Good tackling LB Merlin Robertson only seems like he’s been around since the Frank Kush era, and there are decent pass rushing options with the pressure coming from several spots.

Pac-12 college football rankings and predictions with the realistic best and worst case records and quick analysis – the 2022 spring version.

It’s almost like the Pac-12 took a year off to get ready for what’s coming.

Washington certainly took a break, Stanford went to sleep after a decent start, and USC all but put out the Not Interested sign after the season was blown up  with the early firing of Clay Helton.

Arizona is improving – last year was likely a step back to take a big leap forward, even if it’s still going to take another season or so.

UCLA showed glimpses of getting stronger, Oregon State and Washington State had some fun, and Utah got to the top of the Pac-12 mountain.

This year, though, the conference looks like it’s going to improve all the way around before all the things are in place to blast off in 2023.

Lincoln Riley at USC, Oregon settling in with Dan Lanning, Washington about to crank up the O with Kalen DeBoer – the Pac-12 is going to be fun.

Where to the 12 teams appear to be this spring? How good are they?

The Pac-12 spring rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

USC is as good as anyone when it comes to cranking out historic NFL draft picks, and the Pac-12 overall isn’t bad, but some programs are shockingly light.

Who were the best draft picks ever from the Pac-12 programs?

This isn’t a list of the top pro players to come from the Pac-12 schools – these are the best draft picks.

If a player had a great run for someone other than the team that drafted him, he gets knocked down a peg, or isn’t on the list at all.

The goal for any draft pick is to get a player who performs at a high level for a long period of time, so longevity matters.

Arizona State vs Stanford Game Preview, Pac-12 Tournament

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devils have finally started to win.

They played well throughout the year – especially on the defensive side – but there wasn’t any payoff in loss after loss. That all changed around the middle of February, and now it comes into the Pac-12 Tournament on a 7-1 run.

The defense continues to be fantastic – no one has hit 70 points on the Sun Devils over the last eight games, and getting to 60 has been a grind. That includes a win over Stanford a few day ago..

Arizona State might not be hitting enough from three, but the defense is suffocating. Stanford only hit 37% from the field and couldn’t seem to get anything going in the 65-56 loss, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford can hit the boards.

It’s not shooting well and scoring has been a problem. Fortunately, this isn’t going to be any sort of a shootout – the Cardinal should never be out of this.

As long as it can play a grinding game and win the rebounding battle – it was +10 against the Sun Devils – Stanford should be dangerous. It was able to win the first meeting back in late January even though it didn’t shoot well, but …

Arizona State vs Stanford: What’s Going To Happen

Stanford has apparently decided that it’s done scoring for the 2021-2022 college basketball season.

It hasn’t hit 70 points in a few weeks, it’s not getting enough from three, and it’s not doing a thing to manufacture points from the free throw line.

This isn’t going to be anything remotely pretty, but it’ll look just fine for an Arizona State defense that should take over early on.

UCLA vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

How did Arizona State do it the first time around?

It beat UCLA in a three-overtime thriller a few weeks ago after shooting well from the three, doing a solid job on the boards, and holding on for dear life late before rolling in that third extra frame.

The record might not be all that great, and it’s almost certainly going to be a losing season, but this is a better team than it seems. It hasn’t been too bad from three when it takes its chances, the defense has been terrific, and the offense moves the ball around well.

UCLA has been really, really flaky from three and it has offensive stalls once in a while. As long as this doesn’t come down to a free throw contest, Arizona State should be able to hang around.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why UCLA Will Win

Yeah, you think UCLA will be a wee bit fired up to get revenge after Arizona State’s win back in Tempe?

Nah, it probably isn’t going to be that jacked to do that, but it certainly won’t take the Sun Devils lightly.

The Bruin defense will pack it in, force the Sun Devils to try hitting from the outside, and then it’ll rely on the offensive punch to take care of the rest.

Arizona State might do a great job defensively, and it’ll get its share of rebounds, but as long as UCLA is able to move the ball around like it did in the first game, limit the turnovers, and hit something from three once in a while, there won’t be any drama.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA will be too good offensively at home.

Arizona State struggles as is to put points on the board, but it has a big-time problem when it gets out of its friendly confines – again, forget about anything from three from this group.

The Sun Devil D will be good enough to keep this from getting too ugly, but UCLA will get a decent, business-like win with one first half offensive burst.

Arizona State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Sun Devils miss from the Pac-12 North Division?

For a program in turmoil and with one of the most – let’s just say – interesting teams coming back in 2022, there’s nothing that can be taken for granted. However, missing Oregon from the North helps in a big way, and missing Cal might be a big plus, too.

The team from Tempe having to go to Pullman, Washington to face Washington State in mid-November is a problem, but Washington and Oregon State are home games, Going to Stanford after getting a week off isn’t bad, but …

Arizona State Football Schedule What To Know: It could be a rough start, and …

The Sun Devils should be at least 2-1 to start with Northern Arizona and Eastern Michigan wrapped around a trip to Oklahoma State. And then it gets nasty.

Utah, at USC – Arizona State will know where it stands in the South race right away. If that’s not bad enough, the second half of the season isn’t going to be a breeze with a run of three road games in four weeks and with four of the last six games away from home.

Arizona State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

If everything was rolling and the program had everything in place – losing Jayden Daniels certainly didn’t help – the schedule wouldn’t be that bad.

The road games over the second half of the season are all winnable, and again, missing Oregon helps, it’s still a tough enough overall slate to be a grind considering the reworking that needs to be done.

Arizona vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The Wildcats are on a roll.

They have one tough run against UCLA on the road a few weeks ago, and they couldn’t quite get out of Tennessee in late December, and that’s been it.

The team has been brilliant both inside and out – at least when it feels like taking threes – the defense has been stellar, and everything else is clicking.

Arizona State doesn’t really score.

Sure, it was great in the three overtimes against UCLA on Saturday, but for the most part this isn’t a good enough shooting team from three, and it can’t hang punch for punch when it comes to the efficiency of possessions. However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona State Will Win

Forget the 7-13 record. This is a good team that battled well in the 67-56 loss to Arizona several days ago. It was able to grind down USC, and it managed to do just enough to hang on for dear life against UCLA for one of the season’s most stunning wins.

It’s cliché, but there’s no quit in this team.

It’s passing the ball around well, it’s scrapping on the boards, and it plays a nasty brand of defense, especially from three.

Arizona, USC – in the second game against the Trojans – and UCLA all combined to hit just 14-of-69 from three over the last three games.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Can Arizona State find that same magic two games in a row?

It beat UCLA because the D was terrific when it absolutely had to be, and the O hit 40% from the field.

Arizona State is 5-3 when getting to 40%, and 1-10 when it doesn’t. With its style of play, there just aren’t enough opportunities to afford a whole slew of misses.

Only six teams have been able to get to 40% from the field against Arizona. Arizona State won’t make it seven, but it’ll battle hard at home and give the Cats another defensive fight.

UCLA vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Arizona State is playing tough.

It’s battling hard, it gave Arizona a rough run, it played its brand of defense well to keep the high-powered Wildcats to just 32% from the field …

And lost.

It bounced back to give USC a (Sun) devil of a time. The Trojans couldn’t do anything from the outside, only hit 30% from the field, and it couldn’t get into any sort of a groove. Arizona State allowed just 58 points …

And lost.

Arizona State has to play games in the 50s, and it has to hope that the shooting can start to work after whiffing time after time on the outside. The bigger problem in those two losses was the inability to grab a rebound.

ASU has given up 140 rebounds over the last three games, and …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona State Will Win

How tired is UCLA?

It’s one of the best teams in the country, but it had a bit run of games with a stunning win over Arizona, two wins over Cal and Stanford, and a tough road loss to the Wildcats over the last two weeks.

Now it has to deal with a road game against a team that plays a whole lot of defense and really is doing a great job of pressuring teams from the outside.

The Sun Devils don’t have a turnover problem and they’re strong at keeping teams to 40% shooting or under. If UCLA is lacking any energy whatsoever, it’s going to have to grind a game with a whole lot more work than it might like.

And no, UCLA doesn’t rebound like Arizona or USC.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona State just doesn’t score enough.

The team can’t seem to get to 70 points, and it failed to get to 60 eight times. UCLA has yet to score fewer than 60 points.

The Sun Devil defense will continue to bring enough pressure and big plays to make this interesting for a while, but UCLA will have one spurt and that will be that.

USC vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

Arizona State is struggling – to be nice.

It battled hard against Arizona, and there are some decent parts to the mix, but it lost six of the last seven games because it has a hard time scoring.

The Sun Devils have failed to hit 58 points in four of the last six games. They’re dead last in the Pac-12 in shooting, last in three point percentage, and last in scoring. Now they get to deal with a killer USC defense and a team that dominates on the boards.

Overall, Arizona’s defense is better, but USC is fantastic at forcing mistakes and clamping down on the inside, but it’s at its most dominant when it hits the boards hard.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona State Will Win

Can Arizona State keep this low scoring and make it about free throws?

USC has been okay on the line over the last few games, but overall it has a hard time getting to 70%.

It’s not consistent from three on one end, the defense doesn’t force enough takeaways and mistakes, and Arizona State take advantage of every mistake and shot to score – it’s not going to do enough from the field in a half-court set.

Being at home should matter. Arizona State is 4-4 at home and 2-12 on the road. That might not be amazing, but isn’t won two of its last three at Desert Financial.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

The Sun Devils were able to come up with a big push the last time out against Arizona, but it just doesn’t hit enough open shots and doesn’t make enough threes to get past this USC defense.

USC is 16-0 when teams don’t shoot better than 42%. Arizona State has only made more than 42% of its shots six times, but this will be closer than it should be when the Trojans misfire on too many free throws.
