James Klimas will join the Skip Barber Racing program for the 2024 Toyota GR Cup North America season, piloting the No. 61 Middletown Toyota Toyota GR86.

Klimas made his debut with Skip Barber Racing last season with an outing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This season, he will be with the team for all 14 rounds of the championship. Toyota has been a part of the Klimas’ DNA for decades as his family has owned and operated the Middletown Toyota dealership in Connecticut since 1975, coincidentally the same state and the same year that the Skip Barber Racing School was founded.

“Since I’m from Connecticut, I’ve always known and heard of the Skip Barber name since they were originally located at Lime Rock Park,” Klimas said. “Naturally, I contacted them to enroll in their racing school. Coming from a family business, I felt right at home, even more, when I arrived at my first school at VIRginia International Raceway. I wanted to use a production GR86 since my goal was to compete in GR Cup.

“Everyone at the Skip Barber team was very supportive in making sure my car was safe to operate on a racetrack and with my specific needs due to my disability. I really felt like a part of their team, even during the beginning stages of my racing education. Because of Skip Barber’s professionalism and dedication, I already felt like a part of their team and family so naturally it felt right to ask them to support me for the GR Cup series.”

“We ran James at Indianapolis in his first-ever GR Cup race and it was nothing but an awesome experience getting to know him and watching him progress in the car,” Skip Barber Racing team manager Joe Monitto said, “Toyota’s development of the paddle-shifters combined with James’ perseverance gave us an unforgettable race last season. The entire team is excited to take what we learned last season and help James exceed his goals.”

Alex Garcia will drive the No. 14 Orlando Family Medical Toyota GR86 in GR Cup North America. The entry, prepared by Skip Barber Racing, is the second of multiple entries in GR Cup North America that Skip Barber Racing has planned for 2024.

Garcia scored a podium finish in GR Cup North America last year at VIRginia International Raceway. This year will be his first full season with Skip Barber Racing.

“I choose Skip Barber because of the commitment and support they have for their drivers,” Garcia said. “The energy and atmosphere of the team is always high, they are willing to help with anything you need and have amazing coaches that will lead you to be a successful racecar driver.

Going into this season, Garcia is hoping to learn as much as he can from the Skip Barber Racing School instructors, particularly in regard to analyzing data from the car.

“Alex had a great start in his first full season of racing in GR Cup, and we’re ready to expand that success in 2024,” Skip Barber Racing team manager Joe Monitto said. “Alex has been putting the work in throughout the winter to get faster in the car, and we believe the payoff is coming this season. We’ve spent time testing at Sonoma throughout the offseason and Alex is ready to tackle the new pavement!”

Broll to compete in TC America with Skip Barber Racing

Cooper Broll will leap to the top class of TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School with an entry in TCX in 2024. Driving the No. 19 Pied Parker Acura Integra Type S, prepared by Skip Barber Racing, Broll will compete for overall wins at America’s most iconic tracks.

Last season, Broll collected a pair of top-five finishes in TCA and has continued his driving development through multiple training programs with the Skip Barber Racing School. Broll’s adventure in racing began after participating in a Three-Day Racing School with Skip Barber in the summer of 2022. Since then, the Truckee, California native has steadily developed as a racer with the support of the Skip Barber Racing School.

An avid skier in the mountains that surround Lake Tahoe, Broll parlayed his passion for ski racing into an equal love for car racing.

“The moment I stepped into a Skip Barber Racing School classroom, I experienced a warmth and sense of community that I never would have expected to find in motorsports,” Broll said. “The Skip Barber team has continued to be incredibly professional, welcoming, supportive, and helpful to me as a new driver. The level of coaching and support I received in my first year made me feel very loyal to this awesome team and I am thrilled to be able to drive with them again.”

His journey in ski racing was cut short when he was diagnosed with Lyme disease. After a six-year-long battle it went into remission, allowing Broll to return to a more normal life. Car racing, Broll explained, was the activity that would make up for the years of normalcy that had been taken away from him.

“I first met Cooper at a Three-Day Racing School where he caught the bug for our sport,” Skip Barber Racing team manager Joe Monitto said. “It’s been great to watch him develop from a student in our schools to a competent racer in TCA last season. We discussed his options for 2024 and agreed that the step up to TCX in the new HRC Acura Integra Type-S was the perfect next step in his career.”

This is the second of two entries in the TCX class for Skip Barber Racing. Brazilian Celso Neto will also be competing in TCX alongside Broll.

Celso Neto will return to the Skip Barber Racing stable in 2024, piloting the No. 22 Acura Integra Type S in the TCX class of TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School. Neto collected nine podiums, including a win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway last season in the TC class.

Neto will be at the wheel of the latest venture for the Skip Barber Racing School: an entry into the top class of TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School where it will compete for overall race wins. The Acura Integra joins entries in GR Cup North America that will make their debut in 2024 with Skip Barber Racing.

“I chose Skip Barber Racing for this season because I know they have all the right tools to be successful and support me in the case of emergencies,” said Neto, who is the youngest podium-finisher in the history of the Brazilian Touring Car Championship.

The highlight of his 2023 season came at Indianapolis Motor Speedway where the team completed an overnight repair on the car and allowed Neto to climb four spots on lap one of the race before cruising to his maiden victory at the famed speedway.

“2023 was a great season with Celso, he showed great pace and master race craft in our HPD Honda Civic Type-R,” Skip Barber Racing team manager Joe Monitto said. “The Acura Integra Type-S TCX is the perfect next step for him and the team. We are all excited to have Celso back on the team, we know every time he gets behind the wheel chances are he will get it on the podium.”

This season, Neto has eyes set on the championship and running consistently at the front of the grid.

“I’m thrilled to be carrying the Brazilian flag in TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School this season and can’t wait to get to Sonoma,” he said.

The Skip Barber Racing School announced today that it has acquired Superstar Racing Experience (SRX).

Founded in 1975, the Skip Barber Racing School is the largest in the world with over 400,000 alumni including Sergio Perez, Josef Newgarden, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. It currently operates racing schools and safe driving academies at nine different venues across the country.

Since the inaugural season of SRX in 2021, the Skip Barber Racing School has served as the official logistics partner for the series, responsible for the care, maintenance, and transport of all series vehicles throughout the season. Many of the regular competitors in SRX graduated from the Skip Barber Racing School including Ryan Newman, Bobby Labonte, Ken Schrader, and Marco Andretti.

“This is an exciting time for the entire SBRS team,” Dan DeMonte, Chief Marketing Officer said. “We take great pride in providing valuable and exciting events to the motorsports community and now have the opportunity to continue that with the SRX series.”

Don Hawk, the former CEO of SRX, joined the Skip Barber Racing School as its Chief Strategy Officer yesterday.

“For years I watched the Skip Barber Racing School and its graduates as well as those that just stopped in for a refresher course in road racing, now I have the opportunity to join the senior management team of Anthony DeMonte, Dan DeMonte and Joe Monitto at the Skip Barber Racing School where we will bring SRX back to its fans and tracks while also helping them with the overall vision and business across the USA and beyond,” Hawk said.

“Over the years I’ve worked with many great families for which I’m very grateful,” Hawk added. “That’s part of what intrigued me here, the opportunity to work with Anthony and Dan to help execute a plan for the long-term future with SBRS, SRX and so many other projects under this umbrella.”

In addition to operating over 200 days of racing schools and safe driving academies each year, the Skip Barber Racing School owns and operates the Skip Barber Race Series, a training-focused Formula 4 series. The Skip Barber Racing School also competes in professional racing under the Skip Barber Racing banner with entries in a variety of series including IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School, and Toyota GR Cup North America.

Plans for the 2024 season are currently being formed and more information will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Former Superstar Racing Experience Chief Executive Officer Don Hawk will join the Skip Barber Racing School in 2024 as the organization’s new Chief Strategy Officer. Hawk will play an instrumental part in the continued growth and development of the Skip Barber Racing School brand which includes racing schools, safe driving academies, an iconic formula car race series, and a professional race team operating in SRO and IMSA.

Hawk played a key role in the expansion of the SRX brand and served as the series’ CEO for two years. Prior to his time at SRX, Hawk worked as Speedway Motorsports, Inc’s Chief Racing Development Officer overseeing expansion, innovation, and competition at all eleven of Speedway Motorsports’ venues.

“The Skip Barber Racing School is something I knew about and admired for the 36 years I’ve been involved full-time in racing,” Hawk said. “That interest peaked even more-so over the last two years having worked so well and directly with Owner & CEO Anthony DeMonte throughout the SRX seasons. I recently visited VIR for over 7 hours of non-stop touring of the new facility and one-on-one meetings with Anthony. I knew then that this is what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be.

“I look forward to joining the SBRS team and helping them elevate every existing avenue of the company and also help create and complete some new initiatives that are in Anthony’s radar and vision. I’m eager to put the Rolodex to work in this exciting racing platform,” Hawk added.

Hawk brings an extensive motorsports’ background to the Skip Barber Racing School. In addition to his roles with SRX and SMI, Hawk served as President of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. for seven years and as owner of Hawk Sports Management where he represented a variety of parties in motorsports, golf, and college athletics.

Throughout his career, Hawk has worked with key stakeholders in all major racing series including NASCAR, IndyCar, NHRA, SCCA, and the World of Outlaws. His efforts as Executive Vice President for U.S. Legend Cars International helped turn the grassroots level of American motorsports into an incubator for multiple generations of talent. He received the inaugural U.S. Legend Cars International O. Bruton Smith Award in 2012.

“We are thrilled and incredibly fortunate to be bringing Don onto the Skip Barber Racing School team,” SBRS Chief Marketing Officer Dan DeMonte said. “His background, expertise, and industry relationships will serve us well for many years to come, particularly as we continue to expand our reach and diversify our program offerings.”

As Skip Barber looks forward to the 65th anniversary of his first visit to Lime Rock Park, the track will pay tribute to Barber’s contributions to motorsport and Lime Rock Park through special events, exhibitions, and commemorative merchandise throughout the season.

“As Lime Rock Park celebrates its 67th year of operation, it does so with a deep sense of gratitude and reverence for the man whose vision and passion have left an indelible mark on this iconic racetrack,” said Lime Rock Park President Dicky Riegel. “His commitment to excellence and his relentless pursuit of innovation have earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and racing fans. The Year of Skip Barber is a fitting tribute to a man whose passion for motorsports knows no bounds.”

Born in Philadelphia in 1936, Skip Barber’s journey at Lime Rock Park began in 1959. He took his senior year off from Harvard in 1958 to join the Merchant Marines to save enough money to buy his first race car, a Bugeye Sprite. Back at Harvard a year later, he attended his SCCA driver’s school at Marlboro, near Washington DC, and raced his first race. That race was at Lime Rock Park, the first time he visited the track. Actually any track other than Marlboro. Little did he know that this would be the start of a remarkable career that would not only shape his own legacy but also transform Lime Rock Park into one of the premier racing destinations in the world.

Barber raced a variety of machinery in the 60s and the 70s, ranging from sports cars to high-powered formula cars. Barber delivered some shining moments while in the driver’s seat, including beating Jim Clark in an identical car at the then Mosport in his first professional race and setting the ultimate lap record at Lime Rock Park to help push his name to the top of call sheets. Along the way, he won three SCCA National Championships, set 32 different lap records, and earned the President’s Cup.

Success in Formula Ford ultimately propelled him to drive for the March factory in Formula 1 and Formula 5000 with help from team owner, Gene Mason. He ran six Formula 1 races while the first March Formula 5000 car was being built. The highlight of this period was outqualifying Ronnie Peterson, Niki Lauda, and Henri Pescarolo, who were also driving Marchs at the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen in 1972. Unfortunately, the brakes were gone by the 10th lap and Skip spent the day waiving competitors by.

The March 5000 car was one that Barber will freely declare as being a “disaster” and basically ended his career. Shy and not good at promoting himself, Barber usually drove cars the owners or manufacturers wanted to sell. At that time, the guru of track racecar engineering in North America, Carrol Smith, said “he was the fastest guy who never made it big.” He occasionally raced Porsches in IMSA over the next few years.

Barber was only beginning to build a lasting legacy in American motorsports. Believing that racing was a coachable sport, he formed the Skip Barber Racing School in 1975 at Lime Rock and Thompson, started with four students and a pair of borrowed Formula Fords. Since then, over 400,000 students have become racers and champions. He was President of the Road Racing Driver’s Club during this time.

His eponymous school not only created champions in every professional racing series in the U.S. and produced winning drivers at the Indy 500 or Daytona 500 for decades. In addition, the school saved countless lives on the roads through safe driver training programs, as well as having had a profound impact on the sport, training and developing an entire generation of mechanics, administrators, and marketing specialists who often, like the driver graduates, found their way to the upper levels of motorsport. Paul Pfanner, of Racer Magazine, repeatedly has stated “The school was the major entry point into motorsports for so many for so long.”

Understanding the key role that the facility could play in building his growing school, and with a deep desire to preserve the track from development in the very high-value Connecticut countryside, Barber led a group of investors, all racing school graduates, who purchased the track from Harry Theodoracopulos in 1983, eventually becoming the sole owner.

Barber sold his school in 1999 and continued to work there until 2001. Today, the Skip Barber Racing School continues to be the world’s largest automotive education and entertainment company, offering driving and racing schools at the finest tracks in America.

In 2021, Barber sold the track to a different group of investors who were equally passionate and deemed well-suited to carry out Lime Rock Park’s legacy into the future. Barber remains a large shareholder in Lime Rock Group LLC and is an active track management team member.

The Year of Skip Barber commencement ceremony will be held during the Trans Am Memorial Day Classic (May 24-27), more information will be released closer to opening weekend.

Skip Barber to back Fartuch’s NASCAR Truck debut at COTA

The Skip Barber Racing School brand will make its first appearance in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at COTA this weekend when it backs Reaume Brothers Racing’s No.22 Ford F-150, which will be driven by SBRS’s  Director of Instructors Carter Fartuch.

It will be Fartuch’s NASCAR debut. He has previously competed with the Skip Barber Race Team in GT4 America, IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, and TC America.

“My NASCAR debut is a surreal and special moment for me, made possible by the team at the Skip Barber Racing School Fartuch said. “I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the No.22 Skip Barber Racing School Ford F-150 and give it my all for my Skip Barber Family.

“I’m looking forward to competing against some of the best in the country at a track I know very well in Circuit of The Americas. I would like to thank everyone at the Skip Barber Racing School and Reaume Brother’s Racing that made this dream become a reality.”

Long utilized by Formula 1, IndyCar, and sportscar drivers such as Sergio Perez and Josef Newgarden, a significant number of NASCAR drivers have begun to look towards the Skip Barber Racing School in an effort to increase their road-racing prowess including Ross Chastain, Jimmie Johnson, Bubba Wallace, and Kyle Busch. Chastain has credited his development on road courses in large part to the time he has spent with the Skip Barber Racing School.

The training process is continuous, with drivers in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series visiting the Skip Barber Racing School’s new headquarters at VIRginia International Raceway as recently as last week to prepare for Circuit of the Americas.

Last season, the Skip Barber Racing School sponsored Ross Chastain’s NASCAR Xfinity Series entry at Sonoma. SBRS plans to continue to build its presence in NASCAR after the XPEL 225, including the sponsorship of a NASCAR Cup Series entry in Martinsville.

“We couldn’t be prouder or more pleased to add Carter’s name to the list of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series drivers that have trained with SBRS including Matt Crafton, Christian Eckes, Jake Garcia, Lawless Alan, and Mason Massey,” Skip Barber Racing School Chief Marketing Officer Dan DeMonte said. “Our team of expert instructors and turnkey platform, provide a winning environment for beginners as well as professionals.”

Josh Reaume, owner of Reaume Brothers Racing, comes from a very similar background to Fartuch, and believes that his experience on road courses can further build the teams’ road course program.

“Having a professional driver coach behind the wheel of our Ford F-150s seems like the next natural step as we continue to build a competitive program,” Reaume said. “Having him as a teammate to Lawless (Alan) we feel like will create a positive and constructive environment at the racetrack. Being able to carry the Skip Barber family in NASCAR is a great honor to myself, and we are all excited to show what we can do collectively at COTA.”

The new building will serve as the corporate headquarters for all Skip Barber entities including the Skip Barber Racing School, Skip Barber Race Series, the Skip Barber Off Road Academy and Skip Barber Racing, which supports entries in IMSA, SRO and USF Pro Championships.

The facility features a best-in-class workshop designed to support the ever-growing collection of Skip Barber Racing School vehicles, race cars, Yamaha UTVs and fleet of Mack Anthem tractors and trailers. A full fabrication shop and in-house dynamometer round out the expanded capabilities.

The building is located on the campus of VIRginia International Raceway and extends the bond between the Skip Barber Racing School and the legendary racing venue. Students of Skip Barber programs at VIR will be treated to brand new classrooms, and a state-of-the-art driver development center with driver training simulators and a human performance gym. Including VIR, the Skip Barber Racing School will host programs at eight different venues across the United States.

“When it came time to select our new home, we had several different options but VIRginia International Raceway and the Commonwealth of Virginia checked all of the boxes,” Skip Barber Racing School CEO Anthony DeMonte said. “With this facility, the Skip Barber Racing School is poised for unprecedented growth as we support our schools, Skip Barber Race Series, Race Team, Driving Academy, corporate events and our Skip Barber Off-Road Academy right here in Virginia.”

The new Skip Barber Racing School global headquarters stands as just one example of development in and around VIRginia International Raceway.

Skip Barber Racing is expanding its competition presence into the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series with an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for the 2024 season. Anchoring the team’s driver lineup will be a homegrown talent, veteran Skip Barber Racing School instructor and recipient of the IMSA Diverse Driver Development Scholarship Ken Fukuda.

“In March of 2023, I applied for IMSA’s Diverse Driver Development Scholarship,” Fukuda said. “After months of review and workshops with IMSA, I was told that I would be the recipient of their 2024-2025 Scholarship.

“At age 10, seeing a diecast IMSA GT1 car at the mall was what started the racing dream for me. Now at age 36, after 26 years of sleepless nights, a myriad of twists and turns, and so many peoples’ help — especially that of Anthony DeMonte, the entire DeMonte Family, and the Skip Barber Racing School — I now get to come full circle and pilot the No. 16 Skip Barber Racing School Aston Martin GT4 in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series.”

Joining Fukuda for the opening round of the season will be a pair of drivers with just as strong of ties to the Skip Barber Racing School as himself: Director of Instructors Carter Fartuch and current Skip Barber Racing driver Will Lambros.

“Everyone at the Skip Barber Racing School is beyond excited and ready to take on this season in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series,” Fartuch said. “With the talented and experienced team at Skip Barber Racing, we have high hopes for our inaugural season in IMSA.

“Ken and I have very lofty expectations when it comes to the product we produce for our Racing Schools and we believe carrying those same expectations to the Skip Barber Race Team will bring us success,” Fartuch added.

Completing the lineup for the four-hour endurance race will be Will Lambros who is a graduate of a multitude of Skip Barber Racing School programs.

“I’m thrilled to be racing at the Daytona International Speedway in the new Skip Barber Racing School Aston Martin Vantage GT4, especially with Carter and Ken,” Lambros said. “They have been my biggest mentors throughout my racing career with the Skip Barber Racing School. From when I was 16 in the Skip Barber Race Series, to SRO in the Honda Civic Si FE1, and now into IMSA in the Aston Martin Vantage GT4, they’ve been there for me.”

Skip Barber Racing gathered four wins and 19 podiums across a variety of SRO America series last season, including a podium in the opening round of the SRO GT4 America championship.
