Louisville Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cardinals miss from the ACC slate?

So who did Louisville send a ballon bouquet to for this ACC schedule?

It has to play Notre Dame as one of the conference-not-conference games, but there’s no Clemson, no Florida State, and no North Carolina or Wake Forest. There’s no Syracuse, either, but all that matters is missing the Tigers and Seminoles – those should be the ACC’s top two teams.

If that wasn’t nice enough, there are only four ACC road games, and …

Louisville Football Schedule What Really Matters

Seriously, could Jeff Brohm be handed a nicer welcoming gift?

Beyond missing a slew of the ACC big guys, there aren’t two road games in a row and there’s just one away date after October 14th.

Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Miami are all going to be better, but that’s a run of three straight games against teams that didn’t go bowling last year. In all, just five teams on the slate went to bowl games and Notre Dame and Kentucky are coming to Cardinal Stadium.

Louisville Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Eight wins. Start with that with this schedule and hope for more from there.

Starting the season at Georgia Tech will be a tone-setter, but win that – none of the September games are against teams that went bowling – and a 4-0 start is a must before dealing with NC State, Notre Dame, and Pitt.

Okay, so it’s not all as easy as it seems – again, Virginia Tech, Miami, and Virginia won’t be as bad as they were last year – but there isn’t a game on the slate the Cardinals can’t win.

Georgia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Yellow Jackets miss from the ACC slate?

It’s a bit of a rough schedule overall, but the Yellow Jackets catch a few breaks with the conference slate.

There’s no Notre Dame as part of the mix, and there’s no Florida State, NC State, or Pitt, either – Georgia Tech would likely be the underdog against all four teams. Not playing Duke isn’t a bad thing this year, but missing Virginia Tech doesn’t help.

Having four ACC road games instead of five is a plus, but …

Georgia Tech Football Schedule What Really Matters

The road game runs are strange.

There’s a stretch of three road games in four weeks, and none of them are easy with trips to Ole Miss, Wake Forest, and Miami. Winning one of those would be good, two would be amazing.

There’s also the unfortunate timing of the back-to-back road games in early November, going to Virginia and then Clemson.

However, on the flip side, that means there’s plenty of time at home for most of the year, and the last two games are at home, but …

Georgia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

At Clemson and Georgia in the final three weeks. That’s hardly fun, and going to Ole Miss and Miami will be tough, but overall there are enough winnable games to push for a solid season.

Louisville, South Carolina State, Bowling Green, Boston College, Syracuse, and throw North Carolina in there. There need to be at least four wins out of those home games, but five might be needed to get to six wins and bowl eligibility.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Georgia Tech is playing … well?

It won two of its last three games, backup QB Zach Gibson was solid in the 21-17 shocker over North Carolina, and the defense has stepped in a huge way after getting ripped up by Florida State in late October.

No, it doesn’t have the firepower to keep up with Georgia, and the inability to keep the chains moving on third downs could be a killer, but the pass rush is fine, the team is great in turnover margin and keeping the penalties to a minimum, and …

Why Georgia Will Win

Georgia Tech doesn’t have the offense to rally back.

Georgia has shown the ability to hit on the big plays down the field and crank up the scoring drives in a flash, but it should be the running game that takes over.

Miami ran for over 200 yards on the Yellow Jacket D and won easily. Florida State ran for 246 yards and won in a blowout. Overall, Georgia Tech is 0-4 when allowing over 200 rushing yards and 1-5 when giving up 150 or more – the North Carolina win last week was the outlier.

Tennessee and Oregon were the only two teams other than Samford – Georgia didn’t exactly go full force in that – to keep the Dawgs to under 150. The ground game should average over five yards per carry, the defense will care in the rivalry game – it sure did in the 45-0 win last year – and …

What’s Going To Happen

Get in, get this over with, and move on to the SEC Championship.

Georgia has won four straight in the series in blowout fashion, and it’ll roll here without too much of a problem.

The Georgia Tech defense will be just good enough to keep this from going crazy in the second half, but the damage will be done early.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The North Carolina defense gets ripped up by everyone.

The team is 9-1 with a shot coming at the ACC championship and possibly a spot in the College Football Playoff if everything breaks right, but the defense is the worst in the ACC allowing 282 yards per game, there’s no pass rush whatsoever, and it’s the third-worst D in the nation in tackles for loss.

Georgia Tech might be scuffling, but before last week’s loss to Miami the defense has been great at taking the ball away with ten forced turnovers in three games. Being at least +2 in turnover margin is a must, and …

Bowl Projections

Why North Carolina Will Win

Georgia Tech won’t have the firepower to keep up.

Zach Gibson is a veteran quarterback who saw time at Akron – he threw ten touchdown passes without an interception last season for the Zips – but he’s not Jeff Sims, he’s not a runner, and he struggled last week in the loss to Miami.

No one’s slowing down the North Carolina offense that’s cranking up over 450 yards a game lately without a problem.

No one is hotter than Drake Maye, who hit Wake Forest for 448 yards and three touchdowns, he hasn’t thrown a pick in four weeks, and he’s starting to make a statement in the Heisman race.

Georgia Tech’s defense has been okay, but it hasn’t faed anything like this since the 42-0 loss to Ole Miss in September.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s North Carolina, so it’s going to get off the bus with at least 30 points and 300 yards.

It’s North Carolina. It’s also carrying the bag with at least 300 yards of offense allowed.

Georgia Tech will get the O going enough to keep this interesting, but it’s going to struggle on the line and won’t have the consistency to pull this off.

Miami vs Georgia Tech Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

There actually are a few positives here, even after a 45-3 loss at home to Florida State. It starts with this – we know what the problem is.

Yes, the lack of a steady rushing attack thanks to a rough year from the offensive line is part of it. And yes, being forced to take a whole lot of chances has something to do with it. But when this team doesn’t turn the ball over, decent things happen.

When it does, it loses.

Miami is 0-4 when it gives the ball away multiple times. It doesn’t have the steadiness, the defense, or the offensive explosiveness to overcome the mistakes.

It’s 4-1 when it doesn’t turn it over two times or more. The competition had a lot to do with that, too, but Georgia Tech is only a little bit above the Virginia/Virginia Tech range.

Don’t turn it over, get the ground game rolling, and …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Georgia Tech forces takeaways.

Very, very quietly, the team hasn’t been too bad through all the issues and injuries. It’s a simple equation – when the Yellow Jackets win when they run for 180 yards or more going 4-0. When they don’t, they’re 0-5.

Miami’s defense has allowed 200 rushing yards or more in two of the last three games, QB Tyler Van Dyke is hurting with a shoulder problem, and again, the takeaways.

Georgia Tech has come up with eight turnovers in the last three games and two more in six of the last eight outings.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Call this a bowl elimination game.

Miami has a trip to Clemson next before closing out against Pitt – it has to win two out of the last three.

Georgia Tech has to go on the road to North Carolina and Georgia – it has to win two out of the last three.

Nah, neither team will go bowling, but Miami will get one step closer to its offseason a little bit sooner as Georgia Tech wins in its final home game of the season.

Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Jeff Sims should be back.

The star quarterback had foot issues and missed the Florida State game and most of the loss to Virginia. The O didn’t do much without him, and the team needs his rushing to crank things up.

It’s this simple for the Yellow Jackets – they’re 3-0 when the run for 180 yards or more, and ran for fewer than 125 yards in all five losses. The Virginia Tech run defense has been fine, but that’s partly because everyone is too busy throwing it.

However …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Only West Virginia and Pitt were able to run for more than 180 yards on the Hokie defense.

The offense is sputtering, but the D has been able to hold up enough to keep the team in most games. Georgia Tech’s offense isn’t going to run away and hide with this.

Things have started to slip over the last few weeks, but North Carolina, West Virginia, and Pitt can all get the offense moving. Even with Sims, Georgia Tech is awful on third downs, doesn’t come up with enough points when the chances are there, and overall averages an ACC-low 306 yards per game.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Which team can make fewer mistakes and which one can take advantage of the errors on the other side? Georgia Tech is better at limiting the turnovers and penalties.

First one to 20 wins?

This should be interesting and tight, but look elsewhere if you want an offensive firefight.
