Texas vs TCU Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The Horned Frogs aren’t going to crank up a bazillion points.

It’s been a rough run, but they hit 100 in the win over Oklahoma State, and they went on the road and put up 83 on Texas Tech. Texas might be scuffling a bit, but the defense should be okay as long as it doesn’t let this get into a track meet.

TCU leads the nation in fast break points, but Texas doesn’t turn the ball over enough to allow too many quick baskets, and it’s too good at moving the ball around to not be in control of the clock.

It might sound basic, but TCU has to score to win. Duh, that’s the point, but the D isn’t good enough to hold up if the O isn’t going off.

TCU is 16-1 when scoring 75 points or more, and 3-8 when it doesn’t.

That one loss when it scored 75 or more came against …

Texas.

But …

Why TCU Will Win

Maybe the Horned Frogs will crank up a bazillion points.

The Texas defense hasn’t exactly locked it down lately. Baylor was able to go on a good run in the 81-72 win, Oklahoma put up 83 in an overtime loss, and Kansas and Tennessee both hit the 80s in wins..

Texas might be a high-scoring team that leads the Big 12 in points, but it’s 17-0 when allowing fewer than 74 points and 5-7 when giving up more.

TCU will get the tempo going a whole lot faster than it did in the home losses to Baylor and Kansas. As long as the offense hits 70 at home, it’ll be fine – it’s 11-0 when it does.

What’s Going To Happen

TCU will hit 70 points.

It might not want to get this going like it wants, but it’ll be a crazy environment, the offenses will trade big blows early on, and it’s going to be a fun battle that should be great throughout.

There will be a wee bit of a lull when everyone settles in, but TCU at home will be too sharp late. Texas won’t be able to avoid getting into a more up-tempo game, and TCU will be solid late on the line.

Texas and Oklahoma are off to the SEC in 2024, and USC and UCLA are set to go to the Big Ten. So what’s next for college expansion?

It’s official. Texas and Oklahoma are off to the SEC in 2024, and USC and UCLA are off to the Big Ten. What’s next for college expansion?

Sorry if this take sucks, it’s not my fault …

I still haven’t received the $100 million exit fee from Texas and Oklahoma to leave this column in 2024.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133 First Look

Oh big deal. Like you watched the random Big 12 matchup when Texas or Oklahoma played, say, Baylor, and you don’t even know the Pac-12 Network exists.

USC and UCLA are going to be in the Big Ten in 2024?

Texas and Oklahoma are going to be in the SEC in 2024?

Great. Let’s do this already. Let’s get this party started.

I still don’t get how Texas and the Big Ten didn’t pop open a few beers, sit down, and figure it all out, but now it’s official. The Pac-12 and Big 12 are losing the anchor tenants at their respective malls.

In the new world of an expanded College Football Playoff that’s coming, the moves make sense. Progress is okay, and in this case, it’s all going to work great with the timing.

Do I think Texas will win the SEC Championship any time in the near future? Not really. That goes for Oklahoma, too. Whatever.

Either one could finish in the top 11 in the final 2024 College Football Playoff top 25 – the expanded CFP will take the top 12 ranked teams, but one of those will be a Group of Five champ that will probably be ranked outside of the top 12.

That goes for USC and UCLA with the Big Ten – just finish in the top 11, and football-wise and you’re all set.

All of them are all set in terms of revenue and even more explosion. And as I keep telling everyone over and over and over again, it’s going to be okay.

But the travel!

Whatever. The Big Ten teams get on a plane, take a nap, watch a movie, and they’re in LA. We should all be so lucky.

But the tradition!

Oklahoma was a Big 8 team in 1995 before the expansion to what eventually became the Big 12, and Texas was in the Southwest Conference until 1996.

USC and UCLA used to play in the Pac-10. Before that it was the Pac-8. And before that they were a part of the unfortunately-named American Association of Western Universities until 1968.

And everyone was fine. Everyone is going to be fine. It will take you 30 seconds after the ball gets kicked off to adjust.

What’s Next For College Expansion?

GAME … ON.

The Pac-12 has to do something fast, the Big 12 is circling the area looking to pick off more schools, and the Big Ten and SEC and drop the hammer and get just about anyone they really want at any time.

San Diego State. Get ready to be Southern California’s Pac-12 representation.

SMU. I honestly don’t understand why the Pac-12 is pitching so much woo to you – enrollment too small, it’s not like it’s a gateway school to landing more Texas-based teams – but apparently that’s about to be a thing.

UNLV should’ve been a Pac-12 school yesterday, and the Big 12 would be brilliant to go in and totally screw up the Pac-12 by getting there first.

All’s quiet on the Arizona and Arizona State front, but they’re well past ripe for the picking if the Pac-12 doesn’t lock down its media deal fast.

I’m screaming expansion malpractice on the SEC for not following the Big Ten’s move to the coast and not at least floating a three-bus sized public relations rumor about being interested in Oregon and Washington. (And that goes for the Big Ten, too, but it’s better at doing its thing in stealth mode.)

The Big 12 is insane for not grabbing USF to go along with the acquisition of UCF.

The Big Ten is even crazier for not getting Kansas already. And Colorado.

The SEC is nuts for not ponying up some of its cash to pay off whatever is needed for Clemson and/or Florida State to get out of their ACC deal.

That goes triple for North Carolina. That’s the one. That’s the dream of a whale everyone would love to land.

And then there’s the ACC. It had better find a way to put a ring on it and end this friends with benefits thing with Notre Dame as soon as possible, because once the lawyers and money men from other conferences figure out a way to pry the league’s members from the Grant of Rights deal …

But that’s what the rest of the offseason is for. For now, Texas and Oklahoma are going to be in the SEC after this season, and USC and UCLA are going to be in the Big Ten.

And you’re going to have fun watching it all. Really.

Texas vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

Texas needed that.

The loss at Tennessee can certainly be forgiven, and losing to Iowa State in Ames apparently isn’t anything to get weird about – more on that in a moment – but it was the gut-check 69-66 win at Kansas State that might turn into the signature game of the regular season.

Lose that, and with this trip to Kansas, there would’ve been an honest shot of dropping three of its last four games.

Instead, it overcame a slew of mistakes, got the offense going, and now it can  play a little looser in this.

The Longhorns struggled from three in Manhattan, but it’s normally great from the outside, they have the scoring punch to keep up with the Jayhawks, and there won’t be any issues staying alive on the boards.

While they’re coming in off a huge performance …

Why Kansas Will Win

Let’s just say the performance in the 68-53 loss at Iowa State on Saturday didn’t reflect the team’s best work.

It was sluggish from the start, sloppy throughout, and it never got the shooting going.

There might have been a problem in the stunning 23-point loss to TCU a few weeks ago, but that was the lone loss at home. It’s 11-1 in Lawrence, and now after losing four of its last six games there’s a greater sense of urgency to come up with something big.

They’ve got to move the ball around better. They turned it over 20 times against Kansas State and generated just 12 assists. They’re 16-2 when coming up with 14 or more and have yet to come up with fewer than 15 at home.

That matters because it – duh – means the offense is moving better, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Texas is 13-1 when teams come up with fewer than 12 assists.

Kansas will have a hard time running Texas out of the gym, but it’ll be far more energized and far sharper than they were on Saturday. The offense will get more consistent production from the outside, and yes, it’ll all start from better ball movement.

Texas vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The defense went bye-bye in the 116-103 loss to Kansas State in the first meeting.

Let’s just say that was a bit of an aberration.

The Longhorn defense might give up points, but it’s great at taking the ball away, it’s solid at gorging the three. and it all works with an offense that gets up and down the floor in a hurry.

Kansas State might be able to fill it up when the threes are falling, but this is more of a defensive team that would like to keep the game in the 70s and rely on the key defensive stops.

It can run the floor, but it’s not built to go flying up and down like Texas is, but …

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State is at home.

The Wildcats might have lost a few games over the last couple of weeks, but they were on the road. At home they’ve been a killer with the defense doing a dominant job of holding up against the three.

Again, Texas likes to make things happen on the move. It’s not that it can’t hit from three, but it’s far batter when it’s active. That doesn’t mean Kansas State will slow things down, but it’ll be more deliberate and …

What’s Going To Happen

12-0. That’s what Kansas State is in Bramlage, doing a great job of taking the defense up a few notches.

Texas will go through scoring spurts to push the Wildcats out of their comfort zone a bit, but things will settle down in the middle of the second half as the D takes over.

Kansas State hit 13 threes in the first meeting helped by 23 assists. It won’t get that many in either category this time around, but it’ll move the ball around well enough to avoid the Texas pressure.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Texas Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Longhorns miss from the Big 12 slate?

Considering the Longhorns are leaving soon for the SEC, it might have been nice to mostly miss the new Big 12 teams on the schedule. For the most part, that happened.

They have to play Houston and BYU, but they miss both Cincinnati and UCF. Considering BYU is coming to Austin – and there’s no dangerous trip to Provo – that’s not a bad thing.

West Virginia and Texas don’t exactly have a rich history, so that’s not all that bad a miss from the slate nostalgia-wise. Missing Oklahoma State, though, isn’t fun, but it’s a good break considering …

Texas Football Schedule What Really Matters

There might be two road games in a row late in the year – at TCU and Iowa State – and considering the Oklahoma game is in Dallas, there are just six home games. That’s not a lot for a program of this caliber, but there’s one big plus.

Texas doesn’t leave Texas all that often.

Going to Houston isn’t exactly a killer road trip, and Baylor and TCU keep the team in the state – that always matters with this fan base. There’s a road game at Iowa State to go along with that date with Bama – that’s it for the games outside of the state.

Texas Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

At Alabama. For a Texas team that has the talent to possibly do what TCU pulled off, that’s a killer of a road trip considering how manageable the rest of the schedule is.

11-2 with a Big 12 Championship almost certainly doesn’t get it done in a four-team College Football Playoff era, so realistically, Texas probably has to be perfect outside of that trip to Tuscaloosa.

Going to TCU is dangerous, and Oklahoma is always going to be a concern even after last year’s debacle, but that’s about it. Yeah, it really might be possible to run the table outside of the Bama game, but if the Longhorns can pull that off … look out.

Baylor vs Texas Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

How did Baylor pull up out of its nosedive to win six straight? It stopped with all of the turnovers.

The offense got way too slippy in the three game losing streak of a month ago against three good Big 12 teams. The O has been far more careful with the ball, the sooting from the outside has been there, and it’s working to win games played in the 60s and low 70s.

Texas is awful at guarding threes and needs to force takeaways by the bunches, but …

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns are going to open it up a bit at home.

It couldn’t keep up with a red hot Tennessee offense that hit everything from the field on Saturday in a 82-71 Vol win, but it’s going to try to crank up the O, get moving, and get this game on the inside.

Baylor can rebound, but it’s better on the offensive glass than the defensive side. Keep taking it to the rim, get on the line, and come up with enough second chance points to matter. Get this game moving a bit, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The only time the Longhorns lost at home this year was the wild 116-103 firefight with Kansas State. This won’t be that.

Baylor will stay in this on defense. Texas makes way too many mistakes on offense and it’s way too inconsistent from the outside. However, it’s going to score.

Baylor is 15-0 when allowing fewer than 76 points and 1-5 when giving up more. Texas has been held to under 79 just three times in Moody.

Valero Alamo Bowl What Happened

Michael Penix Jr. threw two touchdown passes in the second half, Wayne Taulapapa ran for a 42-yard score in the first quarter, and Washington took a 27-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Texas struggled to get the offense going, but it was able to pull within seven after scoring ten unanswered points. The final Longhorn drive stalled at midfield on a long pass.

Helped by that long bomb that ran out the clock, Texas QB Quinn Ewers finished with 369 yards with a touchdown pass to Jonathon Brooks, but too many drives stalled. There were a few crisp scoring marches, but two ended in field goals and there wasn’t enough consistency.

Fourth downs mattered. Washington is always pushing the ball deep, but Penix Jr. was able to come through on some of the shorter plays. too. He and the Huskies were good at keeping the chains moving – going 2-of-3 on fourth downs – and Texas was also able to connect on two fourth down tries. Washington was able to do more with its conversions.

Valero Alamo Bowl Player of the Game

Bralen Trice, DE Washington
The offensive parts for Washington were great, but Trice headed a terrific effort for the much-maligned defense with a team-tying six tackles with two sacks.

CFN Experts Picks CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Valero Alamo Bowl Fun Stats

– Michael Penix Jr. completed 32-of-54 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns with a pick. Wayne Taulapapa ran 14 times for 108 yards and a score.

– Texas QB Quinn Ewers completed 31-of-47 passes for 369 yards and a touchdowns. He was plagued by a slew of drops.

– Third down conversions: Washington 11-of-20 – Texas 6-of-15. Washington held the ball for almost 36 minutes.

Valero Alamo Bowl What It All Means

For all of the good things Texas was able to do, and even though it closed the regular season winning three of its last four games, it was bowl loss in what was essentially a home game.

After failing to get to a bowl last year, this was the chance for a reset. Steve Sarkisian was going to get a being win, the program was going to go into 2023 with a ton of momentum, and instead, Washington had the bombs away attack and fun offense Texas was supposed to.

With this loss, the streak of four straight bowl wins is broken – it was the first loss since 2014 – and Sarkisian is now 2-3 in bowls. He was 1-2 as the head man at Washington.

Of course it would’ve been nice if Washington didn’t gack away a loss to Arizona State and could’ve played in the Pac-12 Championship with a College Football Playoff berth on the line, but going 11-2 with an Alamo Bowl win over Texas is a really, really nice first year run under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

It’s the first season with 11 or more wins since Chris Petersen took the Huskies to the College Football Playoff in 2016, and it helped the overall bowl run. It’s the first bowl appearance since winning the 2019 Las Vegas, and now the program is 2-3 in these since 2015.

Even bigger, Washington knows just how good it can be under this head coach in this offense. This might be just the beginning.

Texas vs Washington Valero Alamo Bowl 5 Things To Know

Valero Alamo Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

You never know when it comes to these bowl games what kind of mayhem you’re going to get, but for all intents and purposes, Texas has to use this to set the tone for a potentially monstrous 2023. There are still plenty of great players in place, but it’s missing superstar RB Bijan Robinson and, potentially, a slew of important players on the defensive front.

The team was good late winning three of its last four, but the O stalled against TCU and couldn’t get by Oklahoma State before the finishing kick. It was able to crank up the ground game in the win over eventual Big 12 Champion Kansas State, but Mr. Robinson had something to do with that.

– Texas lost its main guy in Robinson, but QB Quinn Ewers is rolling. So is Washington QB Michael Penix Jr., who announced he’s coming back next year – this is when the 2023 Heisman campaign starts.

The Huskies closed out with six straight wins after losing back-to-back road games against UCLA and Arizona State. The offense caught fire, the defense held up just enough to to get by, and overall it was a fantastic first season under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

This is Washington’s first bowl appearance in a few years, beating Boise State in a blowout to close out the Chris Petersen era in the 2019 Las Vegas Bowl. Before that it lost three straight bowls and was an ugly 5-13 since getting past Michigan in the 1992 Rose. On the other side …

Texas has been a bowl game monster. It’s the first appearance since the Tom Herman era – his teams went 4-0 in bowls highlighted by a Sugar Bowl stunner over Georgia. Helped by the great run under Mack Brown, Texas has won 13 of its last 17 bowls since pulling off the 2001 Holiday over … Washington.

This makes it three appearances in four years in the Alamo for Texas – it beat a strong Utah team in 2019 and whacked Colorado in 2020. Now it’s up to Washington and the Pac-12 to finally stand up to the Big 12. Overall the Alamo has been a dud over the last three seasons, but it was strong before that with four games decided by five points or fewer.

Washington State beat Iowa State 28-26 in the 2018 version. Other than that, the Big 12 is 6-1 in the last seven vs the Big 12, and 9-3 since the two conferences took over the bowl tie-ins in the 2009 season.

Why Texas Will Win The Valero Alamo Bowl

The passing game will still work.

It’s Texas, so there are still running backs to rotate into the rushing mix behind a decent offensive line, but it’s not going to get nearly the same production without Bijan Robinson carrying the mail.

However, QB Quinn Ewers is still special, and so is future NFL starting WR Xavier Worthy – he’s still a year away from being eligible – going against a pass defense that was the least efficient in the Pac-12 and allowed 242 yards per game.

Washington brings the pass rush, but as long as Ewers can get into a groove, the offense can move just fine.

The Husky defense doesn’t take the ball away and doesn’t generate enough big plays, but it can get pounded on, too. The Texas passing attack takes center stage, and Robinson might not be there, but the ground game has to try. UW is 2-2 when allowing 150 rushing yards or more.

The Longhorns have to control the tempo, but …

Why Washington Will Win The Valero Alamo Bowl

Here comes the high-flying Washington offense that leads the nation in passing and third down conversions.

Texas lost both times it allowed 330 passing yards or more, and that’s par for the course for Penix Jr. and the Husky attack. It only failed to get to 330 passing yards four times, and it made up for it in three of them by running well.

Texas can be run on – it’s 1-4 when allowing 140 yards or more, and Washington is 4-0 when it gets to that mark – it’s going to get physical when it can.

The offense turned it over multiple times just twice – in the loss to UCLA and the win over Washington State. Washington isn’t going to beat itself, and Texas doesn’t force takeaways. To pull this off, Ewers and the Longhorns will have to keep pressing.

Again, Washington has a pass rush to at least be disruptive, but …
