Why Central Michigan Will Win

It’s a cliché, but it fits.

This is Central Michigan’s bowl game.

It was a wildly weird and disappointing season, but the team was on a nice roll of three wins in four games before the power outage 12-10 loss to Western Michigan with just 253 yards and no luck whatsoever.

Eastern Michigan has gotten by week after week even after having a slew of problems with penalties, third down stops, and generating pressure in the backfield.

It’s all about the ground game. Central Michigan is 4-0 when it gets past 160 rushing yards and 0-7 when it doesn’t.

Eastern Michigan allowed more than 160 yards five times, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Again, Eastern Michigan has bene able to get over its issues to find ways to win.

The turnovers chilled out over the second half of the year, the penalties haven’t been a killer, and the offense ends up coming through when it has to. On the flip side, Central Michigan has a way to screwing up when it can’t afford to.

The 11 penalties and three fumbles against Western Michigan were a killer, there were three or more turnovers in four games, and the offensive punch hasn’t been there on a consistent basis.

However …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan is amazing offensively on third downs – it’s No. 1 in the MAC in conversion percentage – and Central Michigan leads the league in third down D.

The Chippewas are playing with their backfield to find the right combination of young parts to build around for next year, and they’ll find success early on.

Eastern Michigan will get back into it, but the Central Michigan running game will be too much.

Why Western Michigan Will Win

So what’s going right?

It’s been a lost season with a losing record ensured, but the defense hasn’t been bad – it’s fantastic on third downs – it’s able to keep the team in games, and it’s not getting blown out lately.

The offense might have fallen off the map, but the defense took the ball away three times against both Bowling Green and Northern Illinois and 14 times over the last six games.

Central Michigan has had a monster turnover issue before keeping the mistakes to just the one in last week’s win over Buffalo.

Bowl Projections

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Yeah, the Western Michigan offense – it hasn’t stopped, but it can’t stop making massive mistakes in key moments.

It’s not just the steadiness of the turnovers – the six against Ohio were an anomaly – but it’s that they offset the positives from the big plays on the other side.

The ground game isn’t working, and it needs to be merely okay. The Broncos are 3-0 when averaging four yards per carry and 0-7 when it doesn’t.

Central Michigan allows 3.5 yards per carry and only gave up more than four yards per carry four times.

The defensive front should be disruptive against the struggling Western Michigan offensive line, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The turnover margin.

Central Michigan is playing far better than Western Michigan, but the turnovers have been a killer. There will be a few lost fumbles – that’s what Central Michigan does – but the offense works far better than Western Michigan’s.

It’s the final home game of the year for the Chippewas with a chance to keep bowl hopes alive with Eastern Michigan up next week. The O will take over to overcome the big mistakes.

Buffalo vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

There’s no margin for error for Buffalo.

It has to keep winning to have a shot at taking the MAC East after losing to Ohio last week, and it starts by not screwing up.

The ground game might not be dominant against a decent Central Michigan defensive front, and there will be times when the O stalls. However, the defense should be able to make up for it by taking the ball away.

UB comes up with takeaways in spurts – it came up with four or more in three games – and Central Michigan will be happy to oblige. The Chippewas are a horrendous -12 in turnover margin with two or more fumbles in five of the last six games.

But …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The defense really has been good.

The run defense has only allowed more than 170 yards once, the secondary doesn’t get roasted, and most of the problems come from the offense’s inability to hang on to the ball.

The D is the best in the MAC at coming up with third down stops, it’s fantastic at getting into the backfield to be disruptive, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Fumbles, fumbles, fumbles. Central Michigan is the worst team in the nation in lost fumbles, but Buffalo might not need them.

As long as the Bulls are patient and don’t take a slew of chances, they should be able to grind away a bit and take advantage of their opportunities to score. Between that and dominating the time of possession battle, Buffalo will get bowl eligible.

Central Michigan vs Northern Illinois Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

For all of the problems and issues, the Central Michigan passing game has been relatively accurate and the ground attack has been okay. It’s going to be the defense, though, that has to pull this off.

The Chippewas are amazing at getting into the backfield – they’re second in the nation in tackles for loss – and are terrific at generating third down stops.

The D should be able to keep the Northern Illinois offense in check – there isn’t a ton to worry about from the Huskies passing game – and the O should be able to get moving a bit against one of the nation’s worst teams at generating third down stops.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 9

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

Central Michigan gets off the bus at -2 in turnover margin.

The 18 turnovers this season have been a killer, giving the ball away four times in the loss to Bowling Green and losing the last four times the O gave it up multiple times.

Northern Illinois doesn’t force takeaways, though. The defense has been better overall over the last two weeks on the road, but that’s partly because the running game has been dominant enough to control the action.

The Central Michigan defensive front doesn’t get gouged too often, but if NIU can come close to the 260-yard mark on the ground – it got there in three of the last four games – it should be okay.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Good luck trying to figure out if and when Northern Illinois will play well.

Good luck trying to figure out if and when Central Michigan will play well.

Both teams are having major issues and one is about to get knocked out of the bowl picture after coming into the season with hopes of winning a MAC title. Northern Illinois will get a bit more out of it run defense and ground game than Central Michigan will.

Bowling Green vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Where did that come from?

Bowling Green has been able to surprise here and there, but the 98 rushing yards allowed in the 17-13 win over Miami University last week was only surpassed by the 91 passing yards given up.

The offense struggled, but the passing game should do what it wants and everything goes fine when the ground attack is working.

It starts with the pass rush that’s the best in the MAC – ask Miami – and it should continue against a Central Michigan team that has too many turnover issues, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewas can get behind the line, too.

They’re great at generating tackles for loss, holding up after long drives works, and the D has one a nice job of keeping the team in games even when things aren’t going quite right.

Bowling Green will shoot itself in the foot with penalties, the defense will give up big yards, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The schedule.

Central Michigan is 2-5, but it lost on the road to Oklahoma State, Penn State, and to the league’s best team – maybe – Toledo. It also lost to a strong South Alabama and in a fight with Ball State, but …

It hasn’t been able to take down anyone strong. Finally things will click.

The Bowling Green pass rush will keep things low scoring, but the Chippewas will pound away as the game goes on to pull off a desperately needed home win.

Central Michigan vs Akron Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

So what’s going wrong?

This is supposed to be one of the best teams in the MAC, and the season can’t get going with a wildly inconsistent offense, too many turnovers, and no breaks whatsoever.

However, the defense is holding up. It’s having a few issues against the run, but it’s been great in the secondary over the past few games, the pass rush is good, and there are a ton of plays generated behind the line.

The Akron offensive line is about to give up more than ten tackles for loss against this Chippewa group.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Akron Will Win

Central Michigan is 1-5 with the arrow pointing down. Akron is 1-5, but it’s more interesting under new head coach Joe Moorhead.

The passing game is coming off a 418-yard day in the 55-34 loss to Ohio, the running game worked in the loss to Bowling Green the week before, and there are signs that this could eventually start to turn to the positive.

Can the D do anything to take the ball away? Central Michigan has turned it over 11 times in the last four games, and Akron needs the help because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Akron secondary is about to get picked apart.

Accurate quarterbacks who can spread it around roll against the Zips, and CMU’s Daniel Richardson should finally perk back up after a rough month. He’ll throw for close to 300 yards as the Chippewas finally get a win over an FBS team.

Ball State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

The passing game is working just fine.

It bombed away Georgia Southern in a loss, it hit Northern Illinois for over 400 yards in a win, and it’s about to crank it up against a mediocre Central Michigan pass defense that’s getting hit for 264 yards per game.

Turnovers are Central Michigan’s biggest problem with nine over the last three games and without the takeaways to make up for it.

Just assume 300 yards from the Ball State passing game and at least two takeaways. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewa offense is struggling to score, but it’s getting just enough from the passing game to keep moving.

The ground attack has been a major disappoint, but it’s been a rough run on the road and South Alabama is a good team that showed up big in Mount Pleasant in a 38-24 win.

Ball State’s defense isn’t anything special. It’s not going to generate any pass rush and – in a big relief for the Cardinals – it’s not taking the ball away.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan is way overdue for a big performance, but Ball State’s passing game is playing too well. The Chippewas need to get the running game going, and that’s just not happening.

Ball State is better equipped for a passing game fight.

Central Michigan vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

There’s a chance Toledo is just plain tired.

These are college kids and they bounce back in a hurry, but they went from getting hit by Ohio State for 77 points, to traveling out to San Diego where they played on a hot day in a rough late 17-14 loss to SDSU.

Now they’re back home.

Central Michigan wasn’t able to do much in the 33-14 loss to Penn State, but overall the defense has been great on third downs, the passing game continues to be solid, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Toledo Will Win

The Central Michigan offense is struggling.

The passing game that looked so good in blowout mode in the 58-44 loss to Oklahoma State has been painfully inconsistent over the last three weeks, and the O is now having issues with turnovers.

The defense might be doing an okay job at times, but the pass rush isn’t there to match the tackles for loss against the run.

Toledo’s passing game has alway been a bit off, but the pass defense has been wonderful so far – outside of the 482 yards from Ohio State in that debacle – and Central Michigan hasn’t come up with enough of a running game to take advantage of the Rocket’s issues on the defensive front.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both of these teams have the talent to be in the MAC Championship mix, both of them have shown flashes of potential excellent, and both of them have been very, very – sorry to keep using this word, but it fits – inconsistent.

Toledo will get more from its running game to settle in a bit. Neither team will pull away in turnovers, but the home side will get just a bit more out of its defense.

Penn State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Will Penn State be able to keep its full focus after the blowout win over Auburn?

It’s not like there’s anything big ahead – Northwestern is up next – but it’s been an interesting first three weeks with a gut-check rally to beat Purdue and the high-profile win on the road against the SEC. As we’ve seen with Central Michigan, it can take advantage of any opportunity.

It rallied back to make it interesting late against Oklahoma State, and last week it finally got the ground game working in a blowout over Bucknell.

The Chippewas are fantastic at getting into the backfield, the run defense has been strong, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Penn State Will Win

Central Michigan doesn’t have the passing game bother the Penn State secondary.

The Nittany Lions have allowed yards, but they’ve given up fewer than a 50% completion rate overall so far. Auburn almost hit 300 yards but couldn’t get anything going, and the pass rush is there to bother CMU QB Daniel Richardson enough to keep the attack from going off.

The Chippewas offensive line hasn’t been great so far, the defense isn’t forcing enough mistakes, and the secondary was lit up before the Bucknell game, and …

Penn State fans might be liking the great young prospects waiting in the wings, but Clifford is playing like a good veteran who’s able to handle the moment and steadily keep everything moving.

The team made a statement against Auburn. Instead of packing it in and getting through this before the Big Ten season kicks in full force, expect a good, balanced performance and a nice day from the defense.

Why Bucknell Will Win
