Georgia softball rises in latest power rankings

Georgia softball is the top SEC team in the latest softball power rankings

The Georgia Bulldogs softball team has risen to No. 3 in the latest edition of the NCAA’s softball power rankings. Georgia went 4-0 over the past week, sweeping Ole Miss in a three-game series on the road and defeating Georgia Southern 17-1.

Georgia is now 27-4 on the season with wins over seven different ranked opponents. The Dawgs are ranked behind only Oklahoma and Texas in the power rankings. Georgia is 5-1 in SEC action.

Michella Chester explained why she bumped Georgia up to the No. 3 softball team in her top-10 power rankings.

No. 3 was a tough choice between a mix of Stanford, Georgia and Duke, all sitting around the same spot. I ended up giving it to the Dawgs, who had an impressive sweep over a strong Ole Miss team on the road.

Georgia softball’s next game is at Kennesaw State on March 27 at 6:30 p.m. ET. After that, Georgia hosts Arkansas in a three-game SEC series from Saturday to Monday.

Head coach Mike White and the Bulldogs won at Wake Forest 72-66 on Sunday. Ohio State, who is a strong team at home, is coming off a 81-73 win over Virginia Tech. Ohio State is 15-4 at home this season, while Georgia is only 5-6 on the road.

Georgia knocked off Xavier, 78-76, in Athens in the first round of the NIT. Ohio State picked up a first round NIT win over Cornell.

Georgia’s leading scorer is guard Noah Thomasson, who averages 12.9 points per game. Jabri Abdur-Rahim, one of Georgia’s top players, missed the Wake Forest game with an ankle injury and is likely out against Ohio State.

Guard Bruce Thornton is Ohio State’s leading scorer at 15.8 points per game. ESPN gives Georgia just a 21.3% chance to defeat Ohio State. Ohio State is 8.5-point favorites against Georgia according to BetMGM.

Prediction: Ohio State 80, Georgia 72

Georgia will put up a fight, but Ohio State is a tough team to beat at home. We think Georgia’s NIT run comes to an end against the Buckeyes.

A first glance at UGA football’s newest transfers and early enrollees in spring practice

The Georgia Bulldogs have started spring practice as Georgia builds toward its April 13 spring scrimmage. Head coach Kirby Smart and Georgia have 28 new players on the roster this spring. The Bulldogs added 22 early enrollees and six transfers including three wide receivers.

“There is a lot of competition out there. As a whole, the overall field is probably a little younger than I remember in the past,” said Kirby Smart. Georgia lost a dozen players to the NFL draft this offseason and 20 players to the transfer portal.

“It is a lot of new faces out there. That is the biggest difference. They are progressing well and practicing well,” said Kirby Smart.

Georgia does return numerous experienced players like quarterback Carson Beck, offensive guard Tate Ratledge and defensive tackle Nazir Stackhouse. The Bulldogs bring back seven All-SEC performers from last year.

Let’s take a look at the best photos from Georgia football’s spring practice including a first glance at some of Georgia’s newest players.

Georgia offers 4-star in-state DB recruit

Elite cornerback Dorian Barney is on the verge of being ranked as a five-star

Four-star cornerback recruit Dorian Barney checked out the University of Georgia this winter. Now, the Georgia Bulldogs have extended a scholarship offer to the talented in-state defensive back after he visited Georgia for a second time.

Barney plays high school football for Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, Georgia. The four-star recruit is ranked as the No. 32 prospect in the country. Dorian Barney is the third-ranked cornerback in the class of 2026 and the seventh-ranked recruit in Georgia, per 247Sports. Barney is not far from being ranked as a five-star prospect.

The elite cornerback has recently visited the Clemson Tigers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Barney has recent scholarship offers from Texas A&M, Florida, Auburn and Oregon. Barney also plays basketball for Peachtree Ridge.

On tape, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound cornerback does a good job of reading the opposing quarterback and is a physical tackler. Barney announced his scholarship offer from Georgia football via social media:

Kirby Smart and Georgia are always looking for elite defensive back recruits. The Bulldogs signed the No. 1 cornerback in the class of 2024 in Ellis Robinson IV.

Former 4-star Georgia commitment picks Clemson

Four-star defensive back recruit commits to the Clemson Tigers after previously being committed to Georgia

Four-star defensive back recruit Tae Harris decommitted from the Georgia Bulldogs on Jan. 21, 2024. Now, Harris has committed to the Clemson Tigers.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound athlete is the No. 193 recruit and No. 15 safety in the rising senior class, per 247Sports. Harris is ranked as the No. 26 player in Georgia.

Tae Harris plays high school football for Cedartown High School in Cedartown, Georgia. Georgia football legend Nick Chubb also played for Cedartown.

Harris originally committed to Georgia football in June 2023. However, the Georgia coaching staff has significantly changed since Harris’ commitment to the Bulldogs.

Harris has received an invitation to play in the 2025 All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. Harris is a track athlete with elite speed. In fact, he ran a 10.7 second 100-meter dash in 2023.

Georgia football has five commitments in the 2025 recruiting cycle. Kirby Smart and Georgia have just the No. 10 recruiting class in the class of 2025. However, the Bulldogs have a solid foundation with commitments from two five-star recruits. Clemson has 10 commitments in the class of 2025 and the nation’s third-ranked recruiting class.

Tae Harris is an explosive athlete with good lower body strength. On tape, Harris primarily plays cornerback. He is a sound tackler and big hitter. Harris does a good job of reading screen passes and is not afraid to attack opposing blockers.

PFF names two Georgia Bulldogs to its All-Returning offense

Pro Football Focus names two top Georgia Bulldogs to its All-Returning Team’s offense

Pro Football Focus has named Georgia quarterback Carson Beck and offensive guard Tate Ratledge to its All-Returning offense. Beck is college football’s leading returning passer and will have numerous weapons at his disposal including several new transfers.

Beck and the Georgia offense got a boost this winter when offensive linemen Tate Ratledge and Xavier Truss announced their return for another season. Georgia’s offensive line should be stout again even though the Bulldogs are replacing right tackle Amarius Mims and center Sedrick Van Pran.

As a returning starter, Carson Beck enters the spring with an increased level of confidence. “Coming back, having been the starter, I can kind of hone in and focus more on what I need to improve on compared to just trying to compete against other guys. I can really focus on competing against myself,” said Beck.

Below is a look at PFF’s full All-Returning Team on offense.

Carson Beck and Tate Ratledge are big reasons why Georgia is preseason national championship favorites (+350).

The Bulldogs have a tough schedule ahead in 2024, but have a few premier offensive pieces that should have the Dawgs score with college football’s elite this fall.

Georgia TE Pearce Spurlin shares heartfelt message after medical disqualification

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Pearce Spurlin shares heartfelt message after medically retiring due to a congenital heart condition

Georgia Bulldogs sophomore tight end Pearce Spurlin has been medically disqualified from playing college football. Doctors discovered that Spurlin’s congenital heart condition worsened after his freshman season at Georgia.

Spurlin is medically retiring from football, but will remain active with the Georgia program. Spurlin will stay on scholarship.

It’s an unfortunate turn of events for Pearce Spurlin, who is a former four-star recruit that had a promising freshman season.  Spurlin was expected to see snaps as Georgia’s No. 2 or No. 3 tight end this fall.

Spurlin thanked his teammates, coaches, family and more after announcing that he would be medically retiring from college football.

Spurlin played in six games during the 2023 college football season, recording three catches for 60 yards. Spurlin played high school football for South Walton High School in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

We wish Spurlin the best moving forward in his post-football career life.

Four-star DL sets visits with UGA, two ACC schools

Four-star pass rusher Bryce Davis plans to visit Georgia, Clemson and Duke this spring.

Four-star defensive lineman Bryce Davis has scheduled a visit with the Georgia Bulldogs on March 16. Davis, who is a talented member of the class of 2025, also plans to visit with Clemson on March 9 and Duke on April 13.

Bryce Davis plays high school football for Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. Davis is ranked as the No. 42 recruit and No. 6  defensive lineman in the 2025 recruiting cycle. The four-star is the third-ranked player in North Carolina, per 247Sports.

The Grimsley standout is a good student. Davis has an incredible 6-foot-11 wingspan. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound defensive lineman recorded 92 total tackles and 12 sacks during his sophomore season. Davis is considered both an edge rusher and a defensive lineman. He also plays high school basketball.

Here’s a look at Davis’ sophomore season highlights, via Hudl:

Bryce Davis is a priority recruit for Georgia, Duke and Clemson. Davis ranked all three schools among the top schools he named in 2023. The four-star will take an official visit to North Carolina this summer.

Projecting UGA football’s wide receiver room ahead of spring practice

Georgia football returns a DEEP wide receivers room for the 2024 college football season

The Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver room is faced with the task of replacing Ladd McConkey and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint. Including Brock Bowers, Georgia lost three of its four leading receivers from the 2023 college football season.

Georgia’s wide receiver group is still expected to be among the best in the country. The Bulldogs return a deep core of wide receivers and added a trio of talented transfers in Vanderbilt’s London Humphreys, USC’s Michael Jackson III, and Miami’s Colbie Young.

We foresee Georgia’s offense continuing to spread the ball around with star quarterback Carson Beck. Last season, 10 Georgia players recorded over 10 receptions and we’d expect a similar number of players to do so in 2024.

How do we project the Georgia wide receiver depth chart to rank ahead of spring practice? The Bulldogs begin spring practice on March 12.

Georgia women’s basketball finishes with worst season since 1978-1979

UGA women’s basketball finishes with its first losing season in over four decades

The Georgia women’s basketball team finished with a losing record for the first time since 1978-1979. Georgia’s season is over after falling to Kentucky in the SEC Tournament. Georgia finishes the year with a record of 12-18.

The second year under head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson did not go as planned for the Lady Bulldogs. Georgia senior forward Javyn Nicholson was a bright spot for the Lady Bulldogs. Nicholson averaged 16.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, earning second-team All-SEC honors.

The fact that Georgia has not had a losing season in over 40 years shows how consistent the Lady Bulldogs have been since going 6-19 in 1978-1979.

What is next for Georgia?

Georgia women’s basketball will have a lot of roster turnover ahead of next season. The Lady Bulldogs have five fifth-year seniors, including Javyn Nicholson, so Katie Abrahamson-Henderson will have a very different roster next year.

Georgia Lady Bulldogs head coach Katie Abrahmason-Henderson is 34-30 in two seasons as the head coach at Georgia. Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports

Georgia went just 3-13 in the SEC this season. The Dawgs did make the NCAA Tournament a year ago and still have the resources to consistently qualify for March Madness.

Abrahmason-Henderson has a solid incoming recruiting class with four incoming players ranked among the ESPN top-100. The Lady Bulldogs will likely look to the transfer portal to add a few pieces as well.
