Florida State Seminoles Preview 2022

Yes, kids. Florida State really used to be amazing at college football.

How weird have the last few years been? The last run of four losing seasons in a row was from 1973 to 1976. From 1977 to 2017, how many losing seasons did Florida State suffer through?

Zero.

There was a time when it took something otherworldly to slip a win past this program, and now it’s losing to Jacksonville State. Florida State – one of the annual superpowers of superpowers – has been lapped in the ACC by Wake freaking Forest.

But there were signs last year of things potentially being on the verge of starting to turn.

The Seminoles ran all over Notre Dame in a fantastic opening week loss. They pushed Clemson only to lose – and epically not cover – against Clemson, and they rallied late in the year when it all could’ve gone off the rails only to just miss out on a bowl game in a loss at Florida.

There’s experience returning, the talent level is getting better, and head coach Mike Norvell and the coaching staff have had a few years to settle in. If this is going to be anything close to the return-for-glory season Seminole fans have been waiting for, it starts with …

Florida State Seminoles Preview 2022: Offense

The running game should be dominant. Novell made his name at Memphis with an offense that ripped off yards in chunks as the lightning fast running backs took off through wide open spaces. That happened over the first half of last year with 199 rushing yards or more in six of the first seven games, and then it all came to a screeching halt.

FSU failed to come up with more than 160 rushing yards in any of its last five games, and the passing attack wasn’t there to make up for it. As good as the running game was, it still finished sixth in the ACC with an offense that finished 80th in college football. But again …

The running game. The parts are there. Leading rusher Jashaun Corbin is gone, but Treshaun Ward averaged well over six yards per carry, and ready to take over is star transfer Trey Benson from Oregon.

The offensive line – the Achilles heel of the program over this slide into mediocrity – wasn’t able to keep anyone out of the backfield, but along with star transfer Bless Harris from Lamar for one tackle spot, it’s loaded with veterans who worked the last few years in the system. There’s no excuse to not be a whole lot better and far more consistent.

The passing attack has to be more explosive. QB Jordan Travis grew into the job as a passer – he was okay – and he’s a good runner, but the offense was hit or miss on the big downfield plays.

The experience is there at receiver, but the production and talent have to come through. Ja’Khi Douglas averaged over 18 yards per catch on his 14 grabs, and Ontario Wilson is back after leading the team with just 382 yards and five scores.

Adding Mycah Pittman from Oregon and Johnny Wilson from Arizona State will help. Camren McDonald is a decent tight end who needs to be used more.

Florida State Seminoles Preview 2022: Defense

The offense needs the most help, but the defense has to be a whole lot better considering the talent level and experience returning. The Seminoles were a pedestrian sixth in the ACC in overall defense. It was terrific at getting into the backfield, but it got bombed on too easily and didn’t do enough against the run.

Again, though, the veterans are there, and help from the transfer portal and recurring class are on the way.

The defensive front has to replace the pass rushing production of New York Jet Jermaine Johnson and Keir Thomas on the ends, but overall this should be a plus.

It’s asking a ton for Albany transfer Jared Verse to match Johnson’s production, but he’s a pass rushing terror who should rise up on one side. There will be a decent rotation of young parts on the other.

The ends might be a wee bit of a question, but the tackles are set. Fabien Lovett, Robert Cooper, and Jarrett Jackson are big body veterans who did a good enough job for a run defense that only allowed 3.6 yards per carry.

Verse was the big transfer, but Tatum Bethune from UCF – if 69-tackle DJ Lundy doesn’t hold on to the gig – might end up being the leading tackler from his new spot in the middle. Kalen DeLoach is a hybrid outside linebacker who tied with Lundy for third on the team in tackles and can get into the backfield.

The secondary was only okay considering all the help it received from the pass rush. All-around star and leading tackler Jammie Robinson is back at one safety spot – he was all over the field seemingly making things happen on every play – and he’s not alone.

Akeem Dent was a massive recruit for the Seminoles, and he’s been good so far at free safety – he’s overdue to come up with a special season. Omarion Cooper is a rising factor at corner, but again, the FSU secondary – particularly on the outside – have to be more consistent to go along with all of the interceptions.

NFL Draft Best Picks of All-Time From Every ACC School

Who are the ACC’s greatest NFL Draft picks of all-time? Here are the top three best picks from each ACC program.

Who are the best NFL Draft picks from every ACC program? Which players turned into the greatest stars at the next level?

The ACC takes a backseat to no one when it comes to NFL draft bragging rights from its current programs.

The bulk players might not be there like it is from the SEC and the Big Ten, but you want high-end talent?

From Dan Marino to Jim Brown, and from Lawrence Taylor to Derrick Brooks to Aaron Donald, there’s a lot for the ACC to chirp about.

This isn’t a list of the top pro players to come from the ACC schools – these are the best draft picks.

Players who had great careers for teams other than the ones that drafted them don’t get enough credit, or aren’t on the list at all.

The goal for any draft pick is to get a player who performs at a high level for a long period of time, so longevity matters over one short burst of greatness.

It’s going to be one of the craziest offseasons yet with the transfer portal, a whole lot of big transitions, and several key teams needing to do a whole lot of work.

Before diving into the nuts and bolts of each team with our team-by-team Preview 2022, here’s the spring version quick look, prediction, and ranking of each ACC team.

Don’t get into any sort of a twist with these ACC rankings – you could take about ten of the teams, mix them up in any order, and you’ll probably be right.

Seriously, if you want to swap 11 and 12 on this with, say, 4 and 5, go for it – that’s how even this league should be. If you thought last year was weird in the conference, just wait.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Florida State vs Syracuse Game Preview, ACC Tournament

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminoles have picked a nice time to start playing well.

it was a rough run over the second half of the season going 1-8, but they came up with a stunner over Virginia and took out Notre Dame and NC State to come into this relatively hot.

What is it doing right? It’s making its shots. That’s not a given for an offense that struggled to get to 40% on a regular basis for weeks.

On the flip side, the Syracuse defense has fallen off the map. It can always step it up now that the ACC Tournament lights are on – it’s Syracuse – but it’s getting roadside lately allowing teams to hit half of their shots over the last four games.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange are scoring.

The defense has been uncharacteristically bad lately, but the offense has been good from three, the team’s been strong from the free throw line, and there’s a decent burst from time to time.

There aren’t a lot of mistakes and there won’t be too many easy Florida State points, and that might mean everything – there can’t be any empty trips. The offense has to come through and keep pushing because …

Florida State vs Syracuse: What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the Syracuse defense – it’s just not getting it done.

It doesn’t hack away and there aren’t a lot of fouls, but it’s not coming up with turnovers and it’s not as good on the boards as it needs to be.

Again, it’s Syracuse, so there’s always the shot at going on an out-of-the-blue run this weekend, but Florida State is playing too well and it’s too strong at moving the ball around to get sucked into the positives of the Orange defensive style.

Duke vs Florida State Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminoles got them once.

They pulled off a fun overtime win over the Blue Devils back in mid-January by getting seemingly every offensive rebound and overcoming a whole lot of misses with lots and lots of free throws.

It’s been a struggle to consistently shoot well, but the defense comes up with a ton of takeaways, there are plenty of nice interior playmakers who block a whole lot of shots, and Duke has the ability to go dead cold for stretches.

It has also had a problem at home lately with a loss to Virginia and two-point wins over both Clemson and Wake Forest. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Duke Will Win

Florida State just doesn’t shoot well enough.

It doesn’t score consistently, it’s not always on from three, and for all the good things the team did in the first meeting, there aren’t enough rebounds.

Oh, the Seminoles can hit the offensive boards, but that’s partly because they miss a whole lot of shots.

Duke might not be quite playing as well as it should, but it’s been solid from the field ever since an off day in a win at Notre Dame, and it’s doing a stronger job at getting to the free throw line on a regular basis.

Duke has allowed one team – Clemson – to hit 40% or better from three 17 of the last 18 games, so …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Duke is overdue for a strong performance at home.

It’s been able to hit enough shots to get by, but the defense has been a letdown a bit too often – there are too many lulls.

Florida State might be struggling in a big, big way – losing six in a row before slipping by Clemson – but it’s just not shooting well.

Florida State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Seminoles miss from the Coastal Division?

The Seminoles have to go Miami, and they get Georgia Tech after getting a week off to rest up, but that means they miss North Carolina, Pitt, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. That’s not bad, but they also don’t get Duke.

In division play, Clemson and Wake Forest have to come to Tallahassee, but going to Louisville, NC State, and Syracuse is tough. Manageable, but tough.

Florida State Football Schedule What To Know: The non-conference problem

Opening up with Duquesne in Week 0 might not be a bad thing – treat the game as a scrimmage – with a trip to New Orleans to face LSU to get everything rolling in Week 1.

However, the Seminoles also have to face Florida from the SEC, and dealing with Louisiana – even though it shouldn’t be the killer from the last two years – isn’t a layup late in the season.

In other words, there aren’t any sure things outside of Duquesne.

Florida State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not a totally unmanageable slate, but there are way too many 50/50 games to assume that this should be Florida State’s breakthrough year.

Again, getting Clemson at home is big, and there isn’t anyone on the slate the team can’t get by – especially if LSU and Florida aren’t back to form – but the road games against Miami and NC State won’t be easy, and going a month early in the season without a home game will be trying.

Florida State vs Florida Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

The 5-6 is half full.

The Seminoles started the year with the heartbreaking overtime loss to Notre Dame, followed it up with a loss to Jacksonville State, and followed that up by getting boat-raced by Wake Forest.

They’ve won five of their last seven including terrific – all things considered – wins over Miami and Boston College to get in a position to possibly go bowling.

How?

The defense isn’t great, but it’s making timely stops and plays. The offense isn’t great, but the passing game is consistent enough to make up for the stalled ground attack.

And don’t dismiss the idea of attitude. Winning teams make their own luck – or some cliché thing like that.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Florida Will Win

The 5-6 is half empty.

At this very moment a year ago, Florida was still in the College Football Playoff chase with a high-powered offense that was matching 2019 LSU numbers.

At this very moment now, Dan Mullen can’t coach, the program is in disarray, and now it’s all about who’s going to come in and take over the job and keep the program from getting housed by South Carolina.

However, even with all of the problems and tough loses, there’s a chance to salvage something with a win and a bowl appearance. (Actually, Florida can lose and still go bowling if the planets all align correctly, but that’s for another day.)

Of course things aren’t going great when you’re Florida and you lose six of your last nine games, but there’s still talent, the passing game isn’t all that bad, the ground game is averaging well over 200 yards per game – although, that has slipped lately.

The defensive front should be able to generate a ton of pressure in the backfield against the leaky FSU line, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Interim head coach Greg Knox should be able get the job done with the running game.

Florida State hasn’t played a whole slew of teams that could pound away, but Syracuse and North Carolina had some success, and almost everyone else was too busy throwing to worry about the ground attack.

Florida State might be sharper right now, but it doesn’t control the clock, and Florida is about to.

This will be more of a grind than anything flashy for the Gators, but the turnovers have stopped, the defense will load up against the run, and the ugly last several weeks will have a brief moment of happy.
