Florida State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Seminoles miss from the ACC slate?

It’s … interesting.

There are a whole slew of configurations for everyone’s schedule in the ACC. Some have to play Notre Dame, some have five conference games, and everyone’s road situation is seemingly different.

Florida State packs its trips in two week packs, but more on that in a moment.

It doesn’t catch any major breaks in who it misses from the ACC. Not playing NC State is great, and not having to face North Carolina is a plus, but Georgia Tech, Louisville, and Virginia would all be big underdogs against the Noles.

That, and …

Florida State Football Schedule What Really Matters

At Clemson.

Fortunately for FSU, in the new world of the no-division ACC it’s okay to drop the date in Death Valley and still be in the conference title chase. The trip to Clemson comes right after a winnable game at Boston College, and that’s it for the true road games until late October.

Going to Wake Forest and Pitt will be tough, but again, that’s a quick run of road games and then it’s back home to face Miami. That means the Seminoles only leave Florida four times this year, but …

Florida State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The opener against LSU is a neutral site game in Orlando, the regular season finale against Florida is down the road in Gainesville, and then there’s that date at Clemson.

Throw in Pitt in early November – the weather might not be that bad – along with home games against Miami and a veteran Duke team, and there are just enough landmines to be a problem.

This is a College Football Playoff-caliber team returning in Tallahassee, but get to 11-1 on the way to the ACC Championship will be a tough run. However, if the team is good enough to win two of the three against LSU, Clemson, and Florida, it should be good enough to end up playing for the ACC title with a shot at the CFP.

Cheez-It Bowl What Happened

– In a fun back-and-forth battle, Jordan Travis threw two touchdown passes and Treshaun Ward ran for two scores to help Florida State keep the pace, but it took a 32-yard Ryan Fitzgerald field goal with 55 seconds to play for a 35-32 lead. The Seminole defense was able to close.

– Oklahoma was missing a whole bunch of offensive parts, but the attack worked. Dillon Gabriel threw a touchdown pass and ran for another, and he engineered a 75-play fourth quarter scoring drive for a 32-25 lead. FSU answered with Travis’s second touchdown pass to tie it, and the two teams drafted field goals in the final four minutes.

Florida State’s final drive went 61 yards in six plays, highlighted by a phenomenal one-handed catch by Johnny Wilson. The Noles weren’t able to wind down the clock all the way, but it was enough to give Fitzgerald a shot to hit his game-winning field goal.

Cheez-It Bowl Fun Stats

– Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel completed 14-of-24 passes for 243 yards and a score, and he ran for 17 yards and a touchdown. Star RB Eric Gray didn’t play, but Javontae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk each ran for over 100 yards and combined for 208 yards and two scores.

– Florida State WR Johnny Wilson caught eight passes for 202 yards. Treshaun Ward ran ten times for 81 yards and two scores.

– Total Yards: Florida State 587 – Oklahoma 496

Cheez-It Bowl What It All Means

Florida State started the season strong, had a hard time in the middle, and closed with a bang. It would’ve been nice to have put this Cheez-It Bowl away earlier – Oklahoma really was down a ton of good players – but it was a strong win to keep the momentum going after closing out the regular season with five straight wins.

The win is a big deal. It’s the program’s first bowl victory since the 2017 Independence, and this closed out the first ten-win season since taking down the 2016 Orange. With the win, Florida State is 9-3 in bowls since 2007.

It might be a loss for Brent Venables and Oklahoma, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. The Sooners should’ve been blown out. They were missing enough guys in what amounted to a Florida State home game in Orlando. Even so, they battled to the final drive, the offense worked even with the new guys, and now there’s some positive momentum to build on.

Even so, Oklahoma lost four to its last five games in what turned out to be a losing season. After winning two straight bowls, now OU is 2-4 in its last six and 3-6 in its last nine.

Florida State vs Oklahoma Cheez-It Bowl 5 Things To Know

Cheez-It Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

There was a time not too terribly long ago when this was a national championship matchup. Okay, so it was over 20 years ago when they met for the BCS Championship – a 13-2 Oklahoma win – but these are still two powerhouse-infrastructure/expectation programs looking to use this as a possible launching pad.

This bowl hit a bad snag of really, really bad games from 2013 to 2019 when it was called the Russell Athletic Bowl and then the Camping World Bowl.

There were seven straight games of blowouts to various degrees, and then it became the Cheez-It Bowl. Oklahoma State beast Miami 37-34 in 2020, and last year Clemson pushed past Iowa State 20-13. These OU and FSU might keep it going.

Florida State might have turned a corner under head coach Mike Norvell, but it puled up out of a three-game losing streak nosedive to close with five straight wins induing a total domination of Miami and a shootout victory over Florida. Throw in the early season win over LSU and it’s been a great year. Winning this would be a sweetener.

Yeah, Oklahoma fell off a cliff. Lincoln Riley took the fun – and eventual Heisman winner Caleb Williams – out to LA, and Brent Venables was in charge of being the next star up to keep the program’s success going.

After a 3-0 start, OU lost six of its last nine games – including a 49-0 embarrassment against Texas – but it beat Oklahoma State, got bowl eligible, and now this is the first game of the rest of the program’s life.

Oklahoma’s recent bowl history is all about context. Yeah, it’s just 3-5 in its last eight, but four of those five were College Football Playoff losses. Under Riley it hung 55 on a depleted Florida team in the 2020 Cotton, and put 47 on a depleted Oregon in last year’s Alamo.

This signals the return to the bowl circuit for a Florida State program that was a given to get to one of these things since 1980. It missed out in the last two years after losing to Arizona State in the 2019 Sun, and it lost three of its last five – starting with a blowout loss to Oregon in the first ever College Football Playoff game – after winning three straight bowls.

CFN Experts CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Florida State Will Win The Cheez-It Bowl

Oklahoma is missing a few very, very important players.

RB Eric Gray is off to the next level, a few NFL-caliber offensive linemen – Anton Harrison and Wanya Morris – aren’t playing, and the defense loses some parts, too.

On the flip side, Florida State is getting back a few of its key players for this. It starts with QB Jordan Travis, continues with future NFL pass rusher Jared Verse, and in all, this is about as close to normal as FSU might get from here on for a bowl that’s not among the New Year’s Six elite.

The Seminoles will move the chains. The rushing attack under Norvell is doing what it’s supposed to, Travis is excellent on third downs, and it should all work against an Oklahoma defense that was last in the Big 12, struggles to get of the field, and doesn’t do much in the mix to help control the time of possession battle.

Yeah, the Sooner offense likes to move quickly, but it doesn’t help the D. The team is 0-5 when allowing 200 rushing yards or more. Florida State averages 218 yards per game on the ground.

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Oklahoma Will Win The Cheez-It Bowl

Just keep up the pace.

The defense won’t be able to do much to slow down the Sooners, but even without Gray running the ball the offense should be able to keep up. There aren’t a lot of turnovers, there’s a good balance, and QB Dillon Gabriel is experienced enough to spread the ball around and keep the attack moving.

Yeah, Gray carried the workload, but there’s just enough of a rotation to go along with Gabriel getting on the move to potentially keep the Florida State defense honest.

As long as Gabriel is able to connect on the midrange throws and come up with manageable third down chances, this should be a back-and-forth fight.

The run defense has to sell out. Jordan Travis might be terrific at getting the ball into the hands of his playmakers, but everything chances for this OU D when it can hold on up front.

Just don’t get gouged, come up with a few takeaways – 5-2 when generating multiple turnovers – and …

Why Florida Will Win

Florida has playmakers.

As shocking as the 31-24 loss to Vanderbilt was, the passing game was great – Anthony Richardson threw for 400 yards – and the defense wasn’t all that bad.

It’s all up to the run defense. It didn’t give up 200 yards in six of the last seven games – Georgia was the outlier -and will give up yards here and there, but it should be able to keep Florida State from dominating with its big, gashing runs.

But there will be big, gashing runs from the Seminoles. Florida and Richardson should be able to keep up, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Florida State Will Win

Yeah, the Florida State running game. It’s really, really strong.

The Seminoles have worked their way though the season and now have everything working averaging 5.6 yards per carry or more in five of the last six games. Now they get a Florida defense that doesn’t generate enough pressure in the backfield to be any sort of a problem.

What the Gator D can do is generate takeaways with ten in the last four games and two or more in eight of the last nine. Florida State doesn’t have a turnover problem and isn’t going to give it away enough to matter, if at all.

And then there’s the issue on third downs. Florida State leads the ACC converting 51% of its chances, Florida absolutely miserable at coming up with third down stops, and …

What’s Going To Happen

For all the Florida State love being thrown around lately, the really, really good win since getting by LSU at the beginning of September was against …

A battered Syracuse? Miami? Boston College?

The Seminoles were competitive against Clemson, NC State, and Wake Forest, and lost all three. They’re 7-0 when scoring 35 points or more and 1-3 when they don’t.

Florida has allowed more than 35 points to Tennessee, Georgia, and LSU. Its 6-1 when allowing 28 points or fewer, but …

At home, Florida State will win because the offense will be in control late when it has to come up with two good scoring drives, but 15 on the other side is about to have himself a day.

Why Louisiana Will Win

Can the run defense hold up and can the running attack take over?

Louisiana hasn’t been the killer it was over the previous few years, but the ground game found its groove over the last several weeks with over 200 yards in three of the last four games. The offensive line is playing better, there aren’t a ton to plays allowed behind the line, and turnovers haven’t been a giant problem.

The defense mostly has issues against decent quarterbacks and passing games. It hasn’t been gouged too badly against the run, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Florida State Will Win

The Florida State running game leads the ACC averaging 214 yards per game. It’s been able to crank up over 200 yards in six games, averages 5.5 yards per carry, and it’s going along with a decent enough passing attack to balance things out.

4-0 when running for over 210 yards, the offense is going to get the backs moving – basically doing what Louisiana has done for a few years – and rip off yards in chunks.

The Louisiana run defense has been able to hold up this year, but it’s 0-4 when giving up over 140 yards. FSU has been held under that just twice.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State is on a roll.

It pulled up out of its nosedive with three straight wins, the ground game has been steady, the passing game accurate, and the defense has found itself over the last three games.

Louisiana doesn’t have enough pop to keep up. It’s the first game against a Power Five team this year for the Ragin’ Cajuns, and it’s going to be rough.

Florida State vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

It’s Week 11. Are you trending up, or are you trending down?

Syracuse was rolling, it gave Clemson all it could handle in a totally acceptable 27-21 win, and then injuries kicked in and everything started to fall apart. The 6-0 start was great, and it’s 0-3 since.

Florida State started hot, lost three straight tough games, and now it’s trending back up with two straight wins with the offense doing a great job and the D doing a fantastic job against the pass.

Don’t ask how or why. If you’re Florida State and you beat Miami 45-3, things are fine.

The running game has found a terrific groove rolling for over 200 yards in four straight games, and it’s about to do it again against a Syracuse front that’s fighting the good fight, but is painfully banged up.

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Syracuse Will Win

Sean Tucker, it’s time for the coaching staff to get you the ball again.

QB Garrett Shrader is still hurt – he missed most of the last two games and is still questionable – but the star running back hasn’t been able to get enough work with just 45 carries over the last four games.

Florida State’s run defense has been strong but it hasn’t faced too many teams that can line up and pound away. The Orange offensive line is having problems in pass protection, but it has the ability to bash a bit.

Syracuse is 5-0 when running for 125 yards or more, 1-3 when it doesn’t, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Being at home might matter.

Syracuse started out the years of its first eight games in the dome, and now it’s back. Can there be enough energy? Can the home surrounding carry the struggling team through the problems on both lines and with a lack of passing punch lately?

No.

Florida State is too balanced, the passing game has been too sharp, and the defensive front will take over as the game goes on.
