The Clemson Insider spent the weekend in South Bend for the 2022 edition of Clemson vs. Notre Dame. Despite a tough road loss for the Tigers, TCI enjoyed all of what South Bend had to offer, especially some great food spots we recommend for any football fans visiting the home of the Fighting Irish.

Location #1: Brother’s

Brothers is a sports bar located in the Downtown District surrounding the Notre Dame campus. With the perfect corner location, fans flooded in on Friday to grab a bite to eat before walking around Notre Dame’s historic campus. The food was American bar cuisine and was just what we needed before a day on the Irish’s campus.

Location #2: The Lauber Kitchen & Bar

The Lauber Kitchen & Bar was TCI’s favorite dinner spot of the weekend. The menu featured pizza, salads, burgers, ribs, sandwiches and more. The venue was filled with Clemson fans and provided a nice outdoor space for dining as well.

The pizza was truly delicious and the ribs were also highly rated by the TCI staff. We definitely recommend this restaurant for a quick, relaxing dinner in South Bend.

Location #3: O’ Rourke’s Public House

TCI couldn’t leave South Bend before stopping into an Irish Pub restaurant for a quick lunch on game day. Our staff was seated almost immediately after entering, which was great, especially as the restaurant was so close to the stadium and fans flooded the streets looking for a bite to eat before the game.

Again, the food was great and the atmosphere was exactly what you would want on game day. For an Irish Pub restaurant, the menu had great variety, featuring some TCI favorites—fish and chips, the garden salad and boneless wings. Overall, TCI highly recommends.

Shipley, Jay Courie jump into action to help KJ Henry’s family

When Jay Courie and Will Shipley found out that KJ Henry’s father, Keith, required a kidney transplant, they immediately sprung into action.

Shipley talked with Courie, who does the Clemson sophomore running back’s marketing representation and he wanted to help organize something for the Henry family. On Sunday, they put together a player-led autograph session, which served as a fundraiser to help raise money for Keith’s kidney transplant.

“It was just a problem at hand and we wanted to get to a conclusion and help in any way that we possibly could,” Shipley told The Clemson Insider Sunday. “Jay Courie came to me and asked me if we wanted to do something and was just quick to jump to it.”

KJ announced on Feb. 9 that his father was in need of a kidney. Not even a month later and his teammates, led by Shipley, were able to host a player-led fundraiser Sunday.

“We both thought that was such a great idea,” Courie said. “We put this together and we thought this would be a good way to do it. We just had so many players that were willing to come out and give their time for KJ. I just think it’s a great show of team unity and how much they care about each other. As you’ll see, this is just a great group of young men.”

According to Courie, KJ was so happy and so excited that people were willing to do this and take their time to do this for him and his family.

In addition to KJ, Shipley was joined by nine of his fellow teammates: Jordan McFadden, Xavier Thomas, Beaux Collins, Marcus Tate, Phil Mafah, Jake Briningstool, BT Potter, Davis Allen and Cade Klubnik.

“Probably the biggest problem was limiting how many players could come,” Courie added. “Not so much how many could get here, but how many we had to tell no.”

As Courie previously indicated, not a single player is earning a dime, all the proceeds earned from Sunday’s fundraiser will be going to the Keith Henry Fund. Something like this could have probably happened before NIL, but there still would have been a lot of compliance hurdles in the way.

NIL definitely made an event like Sunday’s easier to have.

“Everybody was just so quick to jump to it and to be able to get something set up in a short amount of time with a good crowd, a great panel,” Shipley said. “We’re all really pumped and just glad we could get something together so quickly.”

“All of us love KJ like a brother,” Shipley added. “His family is our family. That’s something that spreads throughout our locker room. I think anyone could say that for anyone in this room, anyone back in the facility. We love each other on the field and off the field.”

Courie has already had conversations about making further charitable efforts in the future.

“He’s just a tremendous young man,” Courie said of Shipley. He’s a servant leader. He cares about his teammates. He cares about everyone. He’s just got incredible ethics and leadership qualities. He’s pretty special and he’s not a bad football player either.”

As he met with the media ahead of the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine, former Clemson standout receiver Justyn Ross was asked about the possibility of playing with his former college teammate, Trevor Lawrence, in Jacksonville.

“I would say that’d be pretty cool,” Ross replied. “Just cause of what we did over the time we were together.”

The Jaguars receiver room is in desperate need of a talent influx. Ross presents himself as a plausible option for Jacksonville come Day 2 of this April’s NFL draft.

It certainly helps that he already has chemistry with the quarterback there, who Clemson fans may know a thing or two about.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Clemson dominated South Carolina 30-0 on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Tigers limited their opponent to 206 yards of total offense and 3.3 yards per play.

Throughout the 2021 season Andrew Booth anchored a stingy Clemson secondary.

But, until the Wake Forest game the junior cornerback did not have any interceptions.

In Saturday’s game, Booth nabbed two more interceptions to close out the regular season on a high note.

“Really proud of him,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “Great to see him have a game like that down here. But I was really happy for both (interceptions). Great to see him have a couple of plays like that.”

Booth dropped what could have been his first interception of the night.

South Carolina quarterback Jason Brown air mailed a pass right into the hands of Booth, in the same spot former Clemson corner Ryan Carter made a house call against former Gamecock Jake Bentley in 2017, but Booth couldn’t haul it in.

Two plays later Booth made up for the drop as he picked off Brown at the South Carolina 13 and set up a 29-yard B.T. Potter field goal that gave Clemson a 10-0 lead with 2:40 to play in the first quarter.

Booth seized the opportunity again with five minutes to play in the second quarter when Brown hurled a long ball towards the goal line on second-and-9 and the junior high-pointed the ball at Clemson’s own one yard line.

“Yeah it feels great,” Booth said. “Things have definitely been dry, and I’ve just been waiting all season to really get mine. So for them to finally start coming just feels great.”

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables expressed pride in Booth for his effort throughout the season.

“Andrew has played well, he’s a really good player and he will be the first to tell you that if you can shoot for more there is more to be had,” Venables said. “He’s been healthy and played really well. I’m proud of Andrew and he’s been a part of all of those guys back there and he’s done a great job with that group.”

New coach, same story: Clemson still owns South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Clemson cruised to its seventh straight victory over rival South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday. The Tigers dominated the line of scrimmage en route to a 30-0 win.

The streak matched the 23rd ranked Tigers’ seven-game stretch from 1934-40 and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney became the first head coach from either school to lead a team to seven consecutive wins in the series.

Clemson improved to 17-6 since 1977 at Williams-Brice Stadium, it is 31-13-1 overall against the Gamecocks since 1976.

The win also marked the first shutout for either program in the rivalry since Clemson beat the Gamecocks 45-0 in the same venue in 1989.

Clemson (9-3) relied on a strong run game and stingy defense to finish the regular season on a high note.

The Tigers rushed for 265 yards on 43 carries for an average of 6.2 yards per carry and held the Gamecocks to 206 yards of total offense and 3.3 yards per play.

Will Shipley led the way with 19 carries for 128 yards and a 29-yard touchdown run to give Clemson a 7-0 lead with 11:34 to play in the first quarter.

Clemson added to its lead with a 29-yard field goal by B.T. Potter to go up 10-0 with 2:40 to play in the first quarter. The drive started after Andrew Booth intercepted Brown at the South Carolina 13-yard line.

The Tigers struck again on a 34-yard touchdown run by Kobe Pace with 12:10 to play in the second quarter to take a 17-0 lead. The drive covered 79 yards in seven plays and 3:38.

South Carolina will receive the kickoff at the start of the third quarter.

Potter added two more field goals from 47 yards and 49 yards in the second half to extend Clemson’s lead to 23-0.

Phil Mafah put the icing on the cake, with a six yard touchdown run on fourth-and-two and gave the Tigers a 30-0 advantage, with two and half minutes remaining in the contest.

Clemson preserved the shutout as it stopped South Carolina quarterback Zeb Noland shy of the goal line at the three yard line, as time expired.

Clemson now awaits its bowl destination and next opponent.

Shipley reveals there was trouble in running backs room

Will Shipley provided insight into the drama that clouded Clemson’s running back room early this season.

On Saturday the Tigers rushed for 333 yards as Kobe Pace and Shipley carried the ball 24 times for 191 yards and 19 times for 112 yards respectively.

Shipley credited their success on the ground to tight relationships off the field but that hasn’t always been the case.

“The relationships that we have been able to create and just how happy we are for each other, that’s a great sign of how our room is,” Shipley said. “I think there was a lot of jealousy and some bad make up in our room early in season.”

“And the happiness for one another we have is just great and it’s great to know that somebody can prosper and somebody else is happy for them rather than wishing on their downfall in the background,” he continued.

Two running backs transferred out earlier this season. Lyn-J Dixon entered the transfer portal after Clemson’s win over Georgia Tech and Mikey Dukes entered the portal after the win at Syracuse.

In Shipley’s assessment the transfers only served to make the Tigers stronger.

“In an obvious way I think we’ve lost a couple of soldiers, but I think what it’s really done has made us closer as a group because we’ve had so much adversity with guys transferring out,” Shipley said.

“We had five or six guys that could all produce and not everybody was getting to, so I think some jealousy arose, some emotions arose and everything has figured itself out,” he said. “God has a funny way of panning it out and he’s done that.”

Shipley credited running back’s coach C.J. Spiller for the way he handled the adversity early in the season.

“He handled it great, he’s great with handling relationships and communicating in a great way with all of his players,” Shipley said. “In my experience with him he will call you in the room and he tells you what you need to hear.”
