Florida vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Vols are rebuilding, but in a slight surprise, the defense hasn’t been all that bad. It’s great against the run, good at getting into the backfield and it’s been great on third downs.

But in this, it’s about whether or not Joe Milton – coming back from an injury – or Hendon Hooker and the passing game can get going against a Florida secondary that held its own against Alabama, but isn’t a rock.

It’s also about whether or not …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Will Win

Tennessee turns the ball over.

The Vol run D stats are a bit misleading. Pitt can run a bit, but Bowling Green and Tennessee Tech weren’t going to do much on the ground. Florida won’t take many chances, because it doesn’t have to.

The formula for this is easy. Run the ball, keep running it, control the clock, and wait for the Vols to make a mistake.

Tennessee is awful in the time of possession battle – that’s sort of by design with its fast attack that keeps things moving. The Gators should be able to grind it out offensively, and for a defense that doesn’t take the ball away a ton – just three times so far – getting at least two takeaways would tip the scales.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Just how beaten up emotionally and physically is Florida after that wonderful battle against Alabama?

If anything – from all indications – the team was charged up by that now that it knows it can hang with the elite of the elite.

The Gators are also catching a break with Milton likely starting – Hooker is the better option. Hooker won big games like this at Virginia Tech, and Milton 1) never won big battles at Michigan and 2) isn’t accurate enough to pull this off.

It’ll take a little while to get going, but Florida will have the ball for over 35 minutes as it grinds its way to a win.

Georgia vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Georgia Will Win

The Bulldog defense continues to be special.

No, the Clemson offense might not be as good as expected and beating South Carolina isn’t that big a deal, but … it’s still Clemson and an SEC school.

Throw in a UAB team that might be the best in Conference USA, and there’s no complaining about the nation’s third-best D that’s dominant on third downs and isn’t allowing much of anything against the run.

Making life just that much harder for Vanderbilt – because life is so easy for the program – top RB Re’Mahn Davis is gone for the year after suffering an injured toe against Stanford.

As long as the Bulldog pass rush continues to produce like it has over the first few weeks, Vandy will need a major miracle to pull this off.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

So what’s Georgia doing wrong?

This hasn’t always been a razor-sharp O in the red zone – at least over the first two games – and giveaways have been a bit of an issue.

The Dawgs gave it up three times against South Carolina and six times on the year, and Vandy needs all of them. With Arkansas and Auburn up next, Vandy also needs an unfocused effort from the Georgia O.

No, the Commodore defense hasn’t come up with enough big plays, but it hasn’t been bad on third downs. No, the offense hasn’t been explosive enough, but the offensive line hasn’t been all that bad and should be able to hold up for a few drives. No …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia won’t have much of a problem.

Vanderbilt’s running game worked against Stanford, but it’s going to stumble for the first few drives and that will be enough.

Bulldog QB JT Daniels came back from injury and was brilliant against South Carolina, but the faster he can get off the field and rest up, the better. He’ll be able to do that in the fourth quarter after the running game and defense put this away early.

Virginia vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Shhhhhhh, the Demon Deacons are still unbeaten after taking down Florida State with ease.

They beat Old Dominion and Norfolk State to start the season – no big whoop. The performance against the Seminoles wasn’t a total shocker, but this was over after the first half with six takeaways and an offense that capitalized on almost everything.

Veteran QB Sam Hartman threw a pick against FSU, but other than that he’s been sharp. He might take a back seat this week, though, to a ground game that should rip through a a Virginia defense that’s giving up over 200 yards per game.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers are throwing really, really well.

While Wake Forest is rolling through the mediocre – to be kind – Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong threw for 554 yards and four scores in the wild 59-39 loss last week. That wasn’t anything new, though.

The Cavaliers hit Illinois for 423 passing yards in a 32-point win, and warmed up the nation’s second-best passing attack behind WKU with well over 300 yards against William & Mary.

The Demon Deacon secondary hasn’t been tested yet. That’s about to change in a very big way.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Like you’re doing anything better on Friday night. Get ready to enjoy a whole lot of points and a combined 700 yards through the air.

It might not be the Virginia-North Carolina shootout last week with over 1,200 yards, but it’ll be a whole lot of fun.

Wake Forest will blink first against a Virginia D that’s a whole lot better than it played against the Tar Heels. There’s no letting up, though – the Cavaliers will have to play for a full four quarters to keep up.

Middle Tennessee vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The passing game hasn’t been all that bad.

There were problems on the road against Virginia Tech and UTSA to get the scoring punch to hit, but Bailey Hockman and Chase Cunningham have been able to get things going enough to matter.

Charlotte is coming off a big dud of a 20-9 performance against Georgia State, but that was because the run D didn’t do anything and 49er QB Chris Reynolds was off.

Georgia State was able to generate pressure into the backfield and screwed everything up. The Charlotte offensive line isn’t anything special, Middle Tennessee can do enough to force turnovers with eight takeaways so far, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Charlotte Will Win

Middle Tennessee is a disaster in pass protection.

The Blue Raider O line has allowed a whopping 30 tackles for loss and 19 sacks so far. Charlotte might not have a big-time pass rush, but it should be able to get behind the line enough to matter.

The big 49er issue is against the run – Duke and Georgia State were each able to run wild, and Gardner-Webb was even able to have a little bit of luck.

Middle Tennessee has yet to hit 100 yards on the ground. If it’s not hitting its passes, it can’t win.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte might have a nightmare of a time against the run, but Middle Tennessee can’t exploit the opportunity.

Great at controlling the clock. the 49ers will have the ball for close to 35 minutes, and the Blue Raiders won’t have the ability to covert third down change that.

Texas vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Well there’s the passing game.

Texas Tech used to wake up in the morning and throw for 400 yards for breakfast, but the last time it hit the four-bill mark against an FBS team was against Oklahoma State in early October 2019.

The 2016 Red Raiders threw for over 500 seven times with some Mahomes guy throwing for 734 yards in a loss to Oklahoma.

Against FIU, Tyler Shough started to look like the top NFL prospect a whole lot of people think he could be, with 399 yards – the team threw for 407 – with four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a whole lot of big plays down the field.

Texas hasn’t faced a passing game yet.

Louisiana threw okay, but it had to because the running game didn’t work. Arkansas didn’t do much through the air, but that’s because the backfield was running all over the Longhorns. And Rice … it was a perfectly balanced offense of bleeeech.

Now the Texas secondary gets tested just as the Red Raiders might be hitting their stride. But on the flip side …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Will Win

The Texas Tech defense hasn’t faced much of a running game yet.

This might be one of the strongest front sevens the Red Raiders have had in years, and they have yet to allow more than 80 yards on the ground. That’s partly because they faced Houston, Stephen F. Austin, and FIU.

As good as the offense has been, this isn’t a team that’s going to win the time of possession battle no matter how well everything is working. Texas is going to run, run, and run some more after the explosion kicked in with a 427-yard day against Rice.

Casey Thompson has hit 77% of his passes so far – limited in the first two games and terrific against the Owls – the O is the best in the Big 12 at converting on third downs, and overall, the team isn’t making a whole lot of mistakes.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is where the Texas lines have to show up.

The defensive front got gouged by Arkansas, but that’s not a problem this week. There won’t be a slew of sacks, but just pressuring Shough enough to make him fully trust his first read will be enough.

The Longhorns will be balanced after the Red Raider defense comes up with a strong first quarter. It won’t be a perfect performance, and it won’t be a 63-56 win like last year, but it’ll be a strong Big 12 start for Steve Sarkisian.

Texas A&M vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

How is this all working? How has Arkansas gone from miserable, to okay, to 3-0 and with a realistic shot at beating a top ten-caliber team?

The defense has been terrific, the offense isn’t turning the ball over enough to matter, and the lines have been strong from the start.

It’s basic – Arkansas has been good at blocking and tackling.

The ground attack has gone off – ripping through Texas for 333 yards – with a deep group of options. With the running game along with the emergence of QB KJ Jefferson as a top playmaker, the O is doing more than enough to go along with the play of the D that’s allowing 263 yards per game.

On the other side, Texas A&M is turning it over too much, the offense is stalling, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The defense is just fine.

The Aggies got QB Zach Calzada enough work to be up to speed in an easy 34-0 win over New Mexico, but he doesn’t have to bomb away in this.

As always, Texas A&M likes to go at its own deliberate pace, but controlling the clock only works if the defense can take advantage of rest.

A&M gave up yards against the Kent State offense that cranks up the production on everyone, but it wasn’t a problem in the 41-10 win. Colorado managed just 260 yards, and New Mexico did nothing with just 122 yards.

In other words, it’s not time to get into too much of a twist over the lack of explosiveness on offense. However …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not just that Texas A&M is having a hard time scoring. It’s having a hard time scoring when it gets its chances.

The red zone production is awful, the passing game isn’t efficient, and whether it was Calzada or the injured Haynes King, there aren’t enough completed passes for a team that operates like it does.

But that defense …

Arkansas has lost nine straight in the series, but it always gives the Aggies a hard time. But most of the battles over the years have been shootouts – not this.

Neither team will pass well enough, and both ground games will grind and stall a bit too often. The A&M defense will play a bit better to overcome a few missed opportunities by the offense.

It’s going to be yet another battle for the Aggies, but they’ll survive and advance.

Clemson vs NC State Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

So is it officially time to freak out?

The offense couldn’t work in the 14-8 win over Georgia Tech, the passing game has been a problem, and hanging 49 on South Carolina State a few weeks ago now seems like more of an aberration.

But the defense has been outstanding.

It stuffed Georgia, held on against Georgia Tech when the O wasn’t getting the job done, and is doing a great job of getting off the field.

NC State’s overall stats are great, but the O worked against USF and Furman, but stalled on the ground in the loss to Mississippi State. The ground attack isn’t going to work this week, either, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why NC State Will Win

The Clemson defense might be deep and outstanding, but it lost DT Tyler Davis to a torn bicep. He was just getting back into a groove after missing the opener, and now he’s out for several weeks.

NC State just needs to find a way to come up with a few scores – its defense is good enough to keep the middling Tiger attack under wraps. Pack QB Devin Leary has been good, the offensive line has given him time to work, and the defense takes care of the rest.

Yes, there was a long delay, and yes, it was a strange game overall, but things aren’t going well when you can’t get to 300 yards and need a fourth quarter touchdown to get by Georgia Tech. Clemson really is struggling.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

NC State has the defense, the experience on offense, and the coaching staff to pull this off if Clemson really is down and doesn’t have a few kinks to work out …

Offensively. The Clemson defense is just fine.

The Tigers O will continue to be lousy, but the D will come up with stop after stop to keep the game alive. NC State’s offense will stall on third downs, DJ Uiagalelei will hit on one big second half throw, and the upset bid will come up just short.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Michigan vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

This team is really, really, really good when it comes to the turnover margin.

The offense isn’t anything sensational, and the O line is a problem, but the attack doesn’t make mistakes, and the D does a whole lot to give everyone a good situation.

The Scarlet Knights are third in the nation in turnover margin and No. 1 in giveaways – they haven’t turned the ball over yet. No, they haven’t played Alabama or Georgia – Temple, Syracuse, Delaware isn’t a murderers row – but they have yet to allow more than 261 yards, the pass defense isn’t getting hit deep, and they’re aggressive enough up front to bring the pressure all game long.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan Will Win

Michigan isn’t Temple, Syracuse, or Delaware.

There’s a false narrative out there that the Wolverines haven’t played any good defenses yet.

Washington has a fantastic defense – it’s the offense that’s the problem. Western Michigan and Northern Illinois each have wins over Power Five programs – Pitt and Georgia Tech, respectively – and neither one could do a thing to slow down the Michigan attack.

This is a power running team with the flash to rip off big yards in chunks. It’s the No. 1 rushing attack in college football with 335 yards or more in every game averaging close to eight yards per carry.

Yes, the Rutgers defense is outstanding, but the passing game doesn’t take big shots down the field and the ground attack doesn’t have enough pop to make up for it.

And …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan doesn’t have an issue so far with turnovers – there haven’t been any.

Last year’s team wasn’t all that awful in turnover margin and Rutgers pushed hard in a blast of a 48-42 Michigan win. This time around, though, Jim Harbaugh’s team has a far more efficient offense and a far, far better defense.

As long as this isn’t a game full of screw-ups, and if the Wolverines can be patient enough to not force anything to lead to any mistakes, they shouldn’t’ have any real issues.

Rutgers just doesn’t have the offense to keep up.
