North Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Tar Heels miss from the ACC slate?

It’s a very, very interesting schedule, but there aren’t a ton of breaks with who the Tar Heels miss in the ACC.

They don’t have to deal with Notre Dame – that’s a huge plus – and not playing Florida State matters. Wake Forest isn’t an easy out – that’s a decent team to miss – but Boston College, Louisville, and Virginia Tech are all beatable.

On the plus side …

North Carolina Football Schedule What Really Matters

There’s only one game outside of North Carolina – at Pitt – before the end of October, and there are only three games outside of the state overall.

However, that last step is a doozy.

There might be only two true road games in the first ten games, but the last two at Clemson and at NC State save the biggest tests for the very end.

Even so, September is more than just sneaky-tough. South Carolina, Appalachian State, Minnesota, at Pitt – none of those games are guaranteed wins.

North Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Can North Carolina own Chapel Hill?

There will be a few losses before the final two killer games, but there’s nothing until the end that’s unmanageable. There are too many landmines to expect anything too amazing, but it’s hard to get into a twist over a schedule with just four true road games.

Anything less than eight wins with this slate would be a disappointment.

North Carolina vs Duke Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heels haven’t been consistent, but like always, they’re great on the boards and terrific at cranking up the points.

There are defensive issues, and the three point shooting is more about bulk than efficiency, but for the most part it’s all working well enough to keep on winning.

The rebounding is making up for the mediocre outside shooting, and Duke has a problem when it’s not dominating the boards.

The Blue Devils are 8-0 when coming up with 40 rebounds or more and 8-6 when they don’t. How many teams got 40 boards against North Carolina this year? One, and Alabama needed four overtimes to get them.

Why Duke Will Win

North Carolina’s defense doesn’t force enough mistakes and it’s just okay at guarding the three.

Duke has the scoring pop to keep up the pace from the outside – it has the shooting ability North Carolina doesn’t. As long as the offense is working the ball around consistently for the right shot, the production should be there.

Duke is 7-0 when making 40% or more of its threes – 14-2 when making 30% or more. North Carolina can find ways to manufacture points in a variety of ways, but …

What’s Going To Happen

North Carolina has to crank up the points. This isn’t a team that comes up big in defensive struggles, and it has massive problems away from home.

Just 2-4 outside of Chapel Hill – and 10-1 at home – it has to make this a firefight. North Carolina is 0-4 when scoring fewer than 69 points, and Duke is – who’s 11-0 at home – has only allowed more than that twice in Cameron Indoor.

It’ll be a fight in the first meeting of the two. The regular season finale will be bigger, but this will set a tone for the last few weeks.

San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl What Happened

A bit of a ragged game got amazing late. Oregon’s Bo Nix found Chase Cota for a six-yard touchdown on fourth down in the final seconds to tie it at 27, but the drama kicked in with 1) a review on the TD as Cota was dragged across the line and 2) the Camden Lewis extra point hit the upright and bounced through.

– Oregon got Bucky Irving touchdown runs from two and 66 yards for a 14-7 lead, and then it was all North Carolina for a while with 17 straight points for a 24-14 lead in the fourth. The two teams traded field goals before Nix led the way for the game-winning scoring drive in the final moments.

This was supposed to be a wild shootout – the point total got up to 76 – with both sides losing a ton of defensive talent, but that didn’t materialize after a fun first half. There weren’t too many mistakes – just one turnover coming from Oregon – but neither the third quarter stalled until the wild fourth quarter closed with a bang.

– In a matchup of 2023 Heisman candidate quarterbacks, Bo Nix completed 23-of-30 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns with a pick – and ran for six yards – for Oregon, and North Carolina’s Drake Maye completed 18-of-35 passes for 206 yards and three scores and ran for 45 yards.

– North Carolina connected on all four of its fourth down tries. Oregon converted just one of its two chances.

– Oregon outgained North Carolina 414 yards to 322.

San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl What It All Means

Oregon might have been missing a ton of defense talents, but it was still a huge favorite and the offense didn’t do enough to make this easy against a miserable North Carolina D. Even so, it was a bowl win to close out a season that could’ve and should’ve been so much more.

The blowout loss to Georgia to start the Dan Lanning era was bad, in several ways the loss at Oregon State to close the regular season was worse, and a team that should’ve bene in the College Football Playoff mix had to battle against North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl.

Even so, it was a second straight ten-win season and a third double-digit win season that likely would’ve been 4-for-4 except the outlier was 2020.

Give North Carolina credit for coming really, really close to pulling this out without WR Josh Downs and a slew of other key parts. The offense didn’t work like it was supposed to, and yet it made this a ball game.

Even so, this ends the season with four straight losses – including a bad loss to a mediocre Georgia Tech and a rivalry whiff against NC State – and it’s a third straight bowl loss for Mack Brown. North Carolina is just 1-6 in the last seven bowl appearances.

Oregon vs North Carolina San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl 5 Things To Know

San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Yeah, Oregon is losing a boatload of talent, and yeah, the focus is on head coach Dan Lanning and all the talent coming in, but the offense gets back star QB Bo Nix for this and next year, and whatever happens here is just a game to get through before preparing for what should be a monster 2023.

Like Oregon, North Carolina has lost a ton of main guys. It hurts to not have WR Josh Downs – he’s off to the NFL – and way too many parts of the defense are done. It’s not like the D could afford to lose much, and it just did. However, also like Oregon, it gets its fantastic quarterback back with Drake Maye retuning instead of bolting through the transfer portal.

– The Tar Heels have been awful in bowl games whether it’s Mack Brown, or Larry Fedora, or Butch Davis. The program has dropped the last two bowls – including last year’s Duke Mayo to South Carolina – and five of the last six and eight of the last 11.

For all of the good things Oregon has done, it’s having a tough time in bowl games. It was missing players and got rolled by Oklahoma in last year’s Alamo as part of a run of five losses in the last seven bowls. Even the two wins – 7-6 over Michigan State in the 2018 Redbox and 28-27 over Wisconsin in the 2019 season’s Rose Bowl – were tight.

The Holiday is back. It was canceled in 2020, and last year it was halted at the last moment with UCLA having COVID issues. Before that it was a clunker for a few years with three straight relative blowouts – all decided by 11 or more – and eight of the last 11 weren’t close. This one should at least be a blast.

CFN Experts Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Oregon Will Win The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl

North Carolina’s defense gets a wee bit of a bad rap. Its job is to hold serve once in a while, and it’s not bad at doing that.

To a point.

It’s still a bad D overall with absolutely no pressure whatsoever generated into the backfield, not enough takeaways to make up for the problems, and with no discernible ability to stop anyone from throwing – partly because of the lack of pressure.

Statistically it was the ACC’s worst defense in both yards and scoring, and now to make things even more fun, several of the main defensive backs are done.

Even with a few parts gone, Oregon QB Bo Nix should be able to do whatever he wants. On the other side, the North Carolina offense should still work, but it won’t have star WR Josh Downs or new Wisconsin offensive coordinator Phil Longo.

But …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why North Carolina Will Win The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl

Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham is off being the new Arizona State head coach. That doesn’t mean Nix won’t be great, but things might not be quite as smooth.

For all of the dogging the North Carolina defense receives, Oregon’s isn’t exactly the 2000 Baltimore Ravens.

It generates even less of a pass rush than the Tar Heels do, it’s even worse on third downs, and the last time out it. was hammered on by the Oregon State running game for 268 yards and five touchdowns.

Of course Drake Maye is one of the headliners, but the Tar Heels can run a little bit. They’re 3-0 when running for more than 165 yards and 8-1 when coming up with more than 120 – and. 1-3 when they don’t.

The North Carolina offense will still work, Maye is Maye, and …

Why North Carolina Will Win

Here comes the passing game.

It struggled a wee bit over the last few games in losses to Georgia Tech and NC State, but Drake Maye and company should cranking it back up against a shaky Clemson secondary.

The ACC Championship and an Orange Bowl appearance are on the line. The offense will be pushing from the start.

Clemson might be loaded with NFL talent – the line has its share of next-level starters – but the pass defense couldn’t hold on against a hot South Carolina passing game last week allowing 360 yards in the stunning loss. It had a hard time against Louisville’s attack, got bombed on by Wake Forest, and got run over by Notre Dame.

Even with the problems of the last few games, North Carolina is still No. 1 in the ACC in total offense and scoring, averaging 481 yards and 37 points per game.

It’s doing this without a slew of turnovers – just two in the last five games – or penalties, and there’s a good chance the defense finally starts to take the ball away.

Forcing mistakes has been a problem for the Tar Heels, but Clemson can’t stop screwing up. The penalties have been kept to a bare minimum, but the O turned it over 15 times in the last five games.

If this is going to be a shootout, Clemson can’t blink.

However …

College Football Playoff Final Top 25 Prediction
What it means for CFP: Utah beats USC for Pac-12 title

Why Clemson Will Win

Even if the Clemson passing game struggles like it did against South Carolina, the running game should pick up the slack if needed.

DJ Uiagalelei didn’t get a whole lot of help from the receiving corps, but he wasn’t great completing just 8-of-29 passes for 99 yards with a touchdown and a pick in the loss. However, he ran for 51 yards, Will Shipley went off, and the round attack came up wit 237 yards averaging over six yards per carry.

Keeping the momentum going shouldn’t be a problem against the North Carolina defensive front.

The Tar Heels don’t get gashed too much, but they get picked apart with teams having no issues cranking up the carries because they can.

Six teams ran the ball 40 times or more against the UNC defensive front – all ran for 170 yards or more. Notre Dame was the only team that ran it more than 40 times against Clemson.

North Carolina is a dangerous team for Clemson because of the way it can throw and throw some more. On the flip side, it’s a great fit with no pass rush, no plays in the backfield, and almost no takeaways – the D hasn’t come up with multiple turnovers since mid-October.

The Tiger skill parts need all the time and room they can get. That won’t be a problem.

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson is back in the ACC Championship.

The loss to South Carolina might have been a massive disappointment with a possible College Football Playoff trip still in play, but after missing out last year, Clemson has a chance to make it seven ACC Championships in eight years.

Of course the bar is set at a whole lot higher for the program, but being that dominant in conference play is amazing no matter what.

It’s going to take a lot of points to get there, though. This won’t be quite like the 51-45 Clemson win over Wake Forest, but it might not be far off.

North Carolina will get to 300 passing yards, the defense will give up over 450 yards of total offense, and it’ll be an entertaining back-and-forth fight before the Tiger running game takes over in the fourth quarter.

Why NC State Will Win

Even with all of the problems over the last two weeks with losses to Boston College and Louisville, the defense continues to be terrific against the run and the takeaways continue to come with ten in a four game stretch before the loss to Louisville.

The North Carolina defense continues to be absent in key moments. The pass rush isn’t there, there earned any tackles for loss, and the takeaways aren’t coming with just two games – wins over Florida A&M and Miami – with more than one forced mistake.

At the very least, the Wolfpack should be able to grind out the running game a bit because …

The NC State passing game has crashed after star QB Devin Leary was knocked out for the year.

MJ Morris was okay, but he struggled in the loss to Boston College. Ben Finley threw for over 200 yards against Louisville, but he failed to hit half of his passes.

There will be just enough of an offensive punch for the Wolfpack O to work against this mediocre North Carolina defense, but there won’t be enough production to keep up the pace.

The Tar Heels were off against Georgia Tech. Give the Yellow Jackets credit for rising up with a strong game, but there’s too much talent and too much pop to the North Carolina attack to be held down two games in a row. That’s why …

What’s Going To Happen

NC State will get a good day out of the defense, but it’s not going to be enough.

North Carolina might be looking ahead to the ACC Championship, but the rivalry aspect of this – combined with the kerfuffle after QB Drake Maye made his innocuous comments earlier in the season dogging NC State – will crank up the intensity.

It will take a half to get going, but the North Carolina offense will take over in the second half.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The North Carolina defense gets ripped up by everyone.

The team is 9-1 with a shot coming at the ACC championship and possibly a spot in the College Football Playoff if everything breaks right, but the defense is the worst in the ACC allowing 282 yards per game, there’s no pass rush whatsoever, and it’s the third-worst D in the nation in tackles for loss.

Georgia Tech might be scuffling, but before last week’s loss to Miami the defense has been great at taking the ball away with ten forced turnovers in three games. Being at least +2 in turnover margin is a must, and …

Bowl Projections

Why North Carolina Will Win

Georgia Tech won’t have the firepower to keep up.

Zach Gibson is a veteran quarterback who saw time at Akron – he threw ten touchdown passes without an interception last season for the Zips – but he’s not Jeff Sims, he’s not a runner, and he struggled last week in the loss to Miami.

No one’s slowing down the North Carolina offense that’s cranking up over 450 yards a game lately without a problem.

No one is hotter than Drake Maye, who hit Wake Forest for 448 yards and three touchdowns, he hasn’t thrown a pick in four weeks, and he’s starting to make a statement in the Heisman race.

Georgia Tech’s defense has been okay, but it hasn’t faed anything like this since the 42-0 loss to Ole Miss in September.
