Despite split with Rams, Todd Gurley is mentoring rookie Cam Akers

Todd Gurley is taking Cam Akers under his wing, helping guide him off the field in L.A.

Todd Gurley may not be on good terms with the Los Angeles Rams right now due to the dispute regarding the money he’s apparently owed by the team, but that won’t stop him from helping out his potential replacement.

Gurley, now a member of the Atlanta Falcons, is taking Rams rookie running back Cam Akers under his wing after Los Angeles spent a second-round pick on the Florida State product. Gurley doesn’t necessarily feel the need to help him on the field, but he wants to guide him off it.

On a recent episode of the Uninterrupted podcast, Gurley explained why he wants to be a mentor of sorts for Akers, even though they’re not on the same team.

“Just because of whatever I have going on with the Rams don’t make me upset or want to bash or downplay another man. He’s making his dream come true just like I made my dream come true in 2015,” Gurley said. “They went and got this kid in the second round so I just want to be able to tell him or show him early the way to move and then everything that comes with L.A. There’s so much opportunity out here.”

Gurley has spoken repeatedly about the business opportunities that come with playing in Los Angeles, which is why he said he’ll still spend the offseason in Southern California despite not being a member of the Rams.

He wants to show Akers those off-the-field opportunities and put him on the right path, hoping to get the rookie started business-wise even earlier than he started himself.

“He’s going to be a running back in the L.A. market, he’s going to be scoring touchdowns, he’s going to be making plays, so I want him to be able to be on the same type of thing I was on – but even more and on an earlier stage,” Gurley said. “Everyone’s talking a big game saying they’re going to do this or do that – it’s just about helping the youth whether they made it or not. Just like when people go back in the community and do community work. How about reaching out to the guy that’s coming up that just got drafted or the guy that don’t know anything and tell him because he just made his dream come true, so it’s like, why not make this guy even better?

Gurley knows how talented Akers is and fully expects him to succeed in L.A. on the field, largely because of the supporting cast around him. But that doesn’t mean Gurley can’t still mentor him during the offseason and help him develop relationships with those outside the game of football.

“Obviously he’s got to focus on the field and stuff like that, and that’s going to take care of itself,” he said. “He’s going to be with a great offense, he’s going to be making plays. He’s got JG, he’s got Robert Woods, he’s got Cooper Kupp. So he’s got the opportunity right there in front of him, so I just want him to maximize it and take off, really.”

Rams fans may not have the most positive view of Gurley right now with this contract dispute going on, but there’s no doubt this is a nice development from the two-time All-Pro.

Todd Gurley to Rams: ‘Come June 1st, I better have my money’

Todd Gurley isn’t talking to his former Rams teammates until the team pays him what he’s owed.

Todd Gurley was released by the Rams almost two months ago, but he still hasn’t gotten the money he’s owed by the team. The Rams were apparently on the hook for $7.55 million after cutting Gurley, but because he signed with the Falcons, they don’t have to pay him $2.5 million of that amount.

Still, $5 million is still a huge chunk of change, and Gurley still hasn’t gotten his check in the mail. He seems to be growing frustrated with the situation, even saying he’s distanced himself from his former Rams teammates until he gets his money.

“I still ain’t got my money, so it’s really, forget the Rams right now. I don’t even care about them,” he said on Uninterrupted. “I told my ex-teammates that they can’t even text me or call me until I get my money. As soon as I get my money, then I’ll be cool with everybody else.”

Rams GM Les Snead said Gurley and Clay Matthews, who recently filed a grievance against the team for the $2 million he’s owed, will get their money. The hold up is likely due to offset language in both players’ contracts, but Gurley doesn’t fully understand why he hasn’t been paid yet.

He thinks the Rams might be using the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse, but regardless of the reasoning, he wants his money by the start of next month.

“I don’t know what their reason is. And the worst thing about it is they know they have to pay me too,” he said. “Apparently probably just using the COVID thing as an excuse. Or they probably ain’t got no money to be paying anybody. They’ve got that stadium being built right now. All I know is, come June 1st, I better have my money.”

ESPN reported that Gurley doesn’t plan to file a grievance against the Rams like Matthews did. Gurley confirmed that bit of news on the podcast, explaining why it doesn’t make sense for him to go that route.

“The thing is, right now the grievances are on hold. So the team would have to set that meeting up. So they’ve kind of got the upper-hand right now because they know all this COVID stuff is going on,” he said. “It wouldn’t make sense for me to file a grievance because this spring case won’t get heard until next spring and once you file a grievance, it puts everything on hold, so it doesn’t even make sense for me to file a grievance right now.”

Gurley often tries to look on the bright side of things, which is what he’s doing in this situation.

“I shouldn’t have to negotiate my money when it’s already written. But it is what it is at this point. I know I’m going to get my money for sure, so I have to look on the positive side,” he added.

ESPN says running back is Falcons’ biggest post-draft roster hole

Even after the Atlanta Falcons signed Pro-Bowl running back Todd Gurley in free agency, many expected the team to add another complementary back in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Even after the Atlanta Falcons signed Pro-Bowl running back Todd Gurley in free agency, many expected the team to add another complementary back in the 2020 NFL Draft.

That didn’t happen, though, as general manager Thomas Dimitroff selected defensive players with four of the Falcons’ six picks.

Atlanta’s reluctance to draft a running back suggests the team has supreme confidence in Gurley to return to form this season. This could also be a sign that Dimitroff has faith in backups Ito Smith, Brian Hill and Qadree Ollison to step in if needed.

But will the Falcons regret passing on a running back in the draft? According to an ESPN feature analyzing the biggest post-draft roster hole for each team, that could very well be the case:

At their peak with Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator, the Falcons had a top-10 rushing offense to pair with their exceptional passing attack and had multiple backs who could contribute as both runners and receivers. Four years later, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman are gone, and their replacements, Todd Gurley and Ito Smith, are trying to overcome injuries — knee arthritis and concussions, respectively — that could persist for the rest of or even cut short their careers. So far, Gurley hasn’t missed many games, but his performance declined in 2019. He finished below average in both rushing and receiving DVOA for the second time in his career. Reserves Brian Hill and Qadree Ollison will both be 24 in September, but their pedigrees as fifth-round draft picks with below-average rushing DVOA finishes in 2019 temper optimism for their potential breakouts.

Ollison rushed for four touchdowns last season as a rookie, but averaged just 2.3 yards per carry. Smith, a fourth-round pick back in 2018, averaged 4.8 yards per carry with 11 catches before an injury prematurely ended his season in Week 10. Hill has some upside as well, averaging 4.7 yards per carry for his career and is only 24 years old.

Atlanta rushed for an underwhelming 85.1 yards per game in 2019 behind an inexperienced and injury-riddled offensive line. The team used a third-round pick on Temple’s Matt Hennessy, who figures to compete for the starting left guard job this season.

If the blocking up front doesn’t improve, though, it won’t matter who is running the ball for the Falcons in 2020.

Falcons RB Todd Gurley not planning on filing grievance against Rams

Atlanta Falcons RB Todd Gurley, previously of the LA Rams & Georgia football, doesn’t plan on filling grievance against Rams for money owed.

Outside linebacker Clay Matthews is filing a grievance against the Rams over $2 million in guaranteed money that he’s apparently owed.

Former Georgia running back Todd Gurley, who has spent his entire career with the Rams before recently signing with the Falcons, does not have the same intentions as his former teammate, per ESPN’s Vaughn McClure.

Both Matthews and Gurley have been public with their frustration over the Rams and their non-payments, but Gurley has signed with a team while Matthews still has not. Both were released by the Rams on March 19th.

From RamsWire:

Both players had offset language in their contracts with the Rams, which has likely caused the discrepancy between them and the team. However, unlike Matthews, Gurley has already signed with another team.

Because of that, the Rams owe him $2.5 million less than the $7.55 million he was originally scheduled to receive, because his contract with Atlanta is worth at least $2.5 million. As McClure points out, though, Gurley’s contract is still pending a physical even though he’s already signed on the dotted line.

“They’re definitely owed money. That money is guaranteed. We’re going to pay them,” Rams general manager Les Snead told NFL Network before the NFL draft. “There’s some language in the contract of exactly when you pay them, and that’s what we’re adhering by. What I do know is both Clay and Todd earned that money, and they’re going to get that money.”

NFL team win total best bets: How many games will the Atlanta Falcons win in 2020?

Assessing the Atlanta Falcons’ projected win total for the 2020 NFL season, with best bets for their Over/Under.

How many games will the Atlanta Falcons win in the 2020 NFL season? We look at BetMGM‘s projected win total and the Over/Under odds, while looking back at the 2019 season and key offseason roster changes.

Atlanta Falcons’ 2019 season

The Falcons finished 7-9 straight-up (SU), 8-8 against the spread (ATS) and 7-9 vs. the Over/Under (O/U), but it was really a tale of two seasons. They started out with a rash of injuries, and were 1-7 SU with a 2-6 ATS record through the first eight contests. In the second half they turned things around, saving the job of head coach Dan Quinn. They went 6-2 SU and 6-2 ATS across the final eight games, including a 4-0 SU/ATS run to close out the campaign.

Atlanta Falcons’ 2020 offseason changes

The Falcons added a few skill position players, with RB Todd Gurley the most notable addition. WR Laquon Treadwell will also be trying to resurrect his career in the Dirty South. Meanwhile, RB Devonta Freeman, CB Desmond Trufant, TE Luke Stocker and OT Ty Sambrailo were cut, while RB Kenjon Barner, DE Vic Beasley, DE Adrian Clayborn, WR Justin Hardy and TE Austin Hooper were lost to free agency.

The team added CB A.J. Terrell (Clemson) in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, DT Marlon Davidson (Auburn) in the second round, OL Matt Hennessy (Temple) in the third, LB Mykal Walker (Fresno State) and S Jaylinn Hawkins (California) in the fourth and P Sterling Hofrichter (Syracuse) in the seventh.

Projected wins: 7.5 / OVER: -125 / UNDER: +105

The Falcons looked like a playoff team in the second half in 2019, and definitely have the skill position players and stiff defense to win plenty of games in 2020. However, the Falcons face a murderer’s row in terms of opponents, the Buccaneers made huge improvements during the offseason to get better, and the Saints will be a juggernaut again. The Falcons might have an easier time with the Panthers inside the division, but the non-division schedule is brutal for the Falcons. It will be close, but the best play is to go UNDER 7.5 (+105).

Falcons RB Todd Gurley ready to see some Georgia Bulldogs taken in NFL Draft

It seems like just yesterday that Georgia great Todd Gurley was selected 10th overall by the then St. Louis Rams in the 2015 NFL Draft. Since being drafted, Gurley’s had quite the career. He’s been a 3x pro-bowler, a 2x first team all-pro, an NFL …

It seems like just yesterday that Georgia great Todd Gurley was selected 10th overall by the then St. Louis Rams in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Since being drafted, Gurley’s had quite the career.

He’s been a 3x pro-bowler, a 2x first team all-pro, an NFL Offensive Player of the Year, NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, a 2x NFL rushing touchdowns leader and has played in a Super Bowl.

Not bad. And now he’s an Atlanta Falcon and feeling closer than ever to his days as a Georgia Bulldog.

With the draft set to start tonight, Gurley is excited to see his fellow Dawgs take the next step in their football careers.

Georgia could very well have nine players selected over the course of the next three days, which would equate to a school record.

Gurley showed his guys some love on Twitter a few hours before the draft gets underway.

Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley make top 50 merchandise sales list

The Rams weren’t well-represented on the NFLPA’s top 50 merchandise sales list.

Jared Goff is clearly the Rams’ franchise quarterback, but he has yet to catch on as one of the most popular players in the NFL. He finished outside the top 50 players in merchandise sales for the last year, which spanned from March 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020.

Aaron Donald and Todd Gurley were the only Rams to make the list, coming in at No. 50 and 29, respectively. Gurley, of course, was cut by the Rams this offseason and signed with the Falcons, but his merchandise sales during this time period were while he was a member of the Rams.

Here’s how the top 10 rounded out.

  1. QB Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs
  2. QB Tom Brady, Patriots
  3. QB Lamar Jackson, Ravens
  4. RB Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys
  5. QB Baker Mayfield, Browns
  6. QB Aaron Rodgers, Packers
  7. WR Odell Beckham Jr., Browns
  8. OLB Khalil Mack, Bears
  9. QB Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers
  10. TE George Kittle, 49ers

It’s surprising that Goff couldn’t crack the top 50, especially considering how secure he is as the Rams’ quarterback. There’s no chance the team is going to move on from him in the next few years, making him a safe jersey to buy.

The problem for all Rams players in terms of merchandise sales, however, is that the team is getting new uniforms this year. Many fans have said they’re waiting for the new uniforms to be released before they buy a jersey, and that’s been the case for the last year.

Rams players should rank much higher on this list in the next calendar year after the uniforms are revealed – assuming the jerseys aren’t a hideous flop like the logo.

Ex-Rams C John Sullivan calls Todd Gurley ‘a Hall of Fame-type talent’

John Sullivan had some high praise for Todd Gurley, comparing him to Adrian Peterson.

Todd Gurley’s reputation as one of the best running backs in the NFL all but disappeared last season as his workload was limited and he struggled to find the consistency running and catching the ball that he showed in previous years. That shouldn’t take away from how good he was at his peak, though.

Former Rams center John Sullivan blocked for Gurley for two years in Los Angeles. He also blocked for Adrian Peterson in Minnesota during his heyday with the Vikings. Sullivan knows better than most just how comparative Gurley and Peterson are, and he’d put them on the same level.

“He’s one of if not the best skill-position player I’ve ever played with in my career,” Sullivan told ESPN’s Vaughn McClure. “He’s a different running back than Adrian was — but on that same level. Todd is a Hall of Fame-type talent. The Falcons are lucky to have him.”

Gurley’s struggles last season led to the Rams cutting him this offseason, but it didn’t take long for him to land with another team. He agreed to a one-year deal with the Falcons the day after being cut by the Rams, heading back to the state where he played his college football.

His resume obviously isn’t strong enough for the Hall of Fame yet, but he does have two All-Pro selections, as well as Offensive Player of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year awards to his name. Still, he has a long way to go before he’s considered a Hall of Famer the way Peterson is.
