With the 2019 regular season ending for the NFL, Colt McCoy is done in Washington but what could be next?
It appears as though Colt McCoy’s time in Washington has come to an end following Sunday’s 47-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The all-time passing leader in Longhorns history will not be returning for the Redskins.
Colt McCoy saying goodbyes in the locker room. He took a physical here at AT&T stadium and isn’t getting on the plane back to Ashburn.
His tenure with the #Redskins is over and he can’t get back home to Austin soon enough. Nightmare year for a guy who has ultimate respect.
After spending most of his nine-year career in Washington, if Colt returns to the NFL it won’t be with the Redskins. McCoy joined the team in 2014 after spending three seasons in Cleveland and one in San Francisco. His record as a starter was 6-15 in the first four seasons before joining Washington.
During the five seasons in the nation’s capital, McCoy led the team to just one win in 2014. That game came on Monday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. The last time McCoy had played a game there he led the Longhorns to a 13-12 win in the Big 12 Championship game against Nebraska.
There likely will be opportunities at the NFL level for a backup role if he so chooses to return for a 10th season in the NFL. If he wants to stay in his home state, the Dallas Cowboys could be a viable option as their current backup Cooper Rush’s contract expired at the conclusion of the 2019 season. Plenty of time for that decision to come but McCoy must be relieved that the season is over and he can return home to Texas.
Recently Texas Longhorn legend Vince Young was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, so what about Colt McCoy?
Over a week ago, Texas Longhorns’ legendary quarterback Vince Young was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. A deserving candidate given what he was able to accomplish on the football field. His final drive against the USC Trojans to win the National Championship is still talked about more than 13 years later and that game discussed as one of the best ever.
With another Longhorn in the hall, the question arises about which deserving player who wore burnt orange on Saturdays should be next? How about the quarterback who replaced Young in Colt McCoy. The story of McCoy started in the 2006 season, following a redshirt season the year prior. He would beat out Jevan Snead to even get the opportunity and never looked back.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, A PLAYER MUST HAVE RECEIVED FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITION BY A SELECTOR RECOGNIZED BY THE NCAA AND UTILIZED TO COMPRISE THEIR CONSENSUS ALL-AMERICA TEAMS.
First point of the criteria is a check for McCoy. During his time at Texas, Colt McCoy was named a two-time All-American in 2008 and 2009. In those two seasons McCoy added Heisman runner up and finalist to his resume which is quite impressive.
A player becomes eligible for consideration by the NFF’s Honors Court 10 full seasons after his last year of intercollegiate football played.
His final season came in 2009, so following this year Colt McCoy becomes eligible to be enshired.
While each nominee’s football achievements in college are of prime consideration, his post-football record as a citizen is also weighed. He must have proven himself worthy as a citizen, carrying the ideals of football forward into his relations with his community and fellow man. Consideration may also be given for academic honors and whether or not the candidate earned a college degree.
Ask anyone around the program during Colt’s career and you won’t find anyone who doesn’t speak highly of him. Spending spring breaks to travel to Peru for mission work. On top of that he was a speaker for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and visiting schools and hospitals to speak with children. He is the perfect role model and worthy of this criteria as well.
Players must have played their last year of intercollegiate football within the last 50 years*. For example, to be eligible for the 2020 ballot, the player must have played his last year in 1970 or thereafter. In addition, players who are playing professionally and coaches who are coaching on the professional level are not eligible until after they retire.
Given that his last game played happened in 2009, this is another check on the list. However, McCoy will have to wait until after he retires from his NFL career to get the call.
There were so many great memories of Colt McCoy playing in Austin and a big reason why his number 12 is retired. He finished his collegiate career with the most wins by a college quarterback that was surpassed by Kellen Moore not even two seasons after leaving for the NFL.
It is only a matter of time before Colt McCoy becomes the 24th member of the Texas Longhorns to be inducted.
In 2009, Texas was looking for revenge against Texas Tech. Let by some good defense, the Longhorns were able to do that with a 34-24 win.
To open Big 12 play in 2009, Texas hosted Texas Tech in what was a revenge game from the year before. In 2008, the Red Raiders beat the Longhorns, giving them their only loss of the season. This year, Texas made sure they would not come in their way of a perfect season.
Ranked No. 2 in the country, Texas was led offensively by quarterback Colt McCoy and wide receiver Jordan Shipley. The two connected 11 times for 73 yards. Shipley also returned a first-quarter punt 46 yards to give Texas a 7-3 lead.
Hunter Lawrence kicked a field goal in the first minute in the second quarter and that was the only scoring of the first half. Texas went into the locker room winning 10-7.
The second half was the opposite of the first, with each team finding their rhythm on offense. The first four drives in the half had four touchdowns, two for each team. Running backs Tre Newton and Cody Johnson found the endzone for Texas, while Texas Tech quarterback Taylor Potts found wide receiver Lyle Leong twice to make it 24-17 in favor of the Longhorns.
With the good, also came the bad. The four drives after the scores were a Texas punt, Potts interception, McCoy interception, and a Sergio Kindle strip-sack on Potts. After the fumble, the Longhorns finally took advantage of a turnover, as McCoy found wide receiver Dan Buckner for a three-yard score.
The Red Raiders responded with another Taylor Potts touchdown, but Texas was able to ice the game with a nine-play, 50-yard drive that ended in a Lawrence field goal to give the Longhorns a 34-24 lead. Texas forced a turnover on downs and got their revenge against Texas Tech.
While Potts’ 420 yards was the most the Longhorn defense allowed all year, Texas held Texas Tech to -6 yards on the ground. They also forced five fumbles, but only recovered two of them. Add an interception and the Longhorns forced three turnovers.
Colt McCoy had one of his worst days of the regular season, throwing his only multiple interception game. Tre Newton led the team in rushing, having 88 yards on 20 carries.
This game started a six-game winning streak in the series for the Longhorns. Tomorrow’s matchup will make it a decade since this matchup and Texas has gone 8-2 in those 10 games. With a win tomorrow, they can keep that 8-2 record in the 2010s.
Texas will face Texas Tech on Friday at 11:00 a.m. on Fox.
Touchdown Wire ranks the 32 NFL teams in terms of stability and potential at the game’s most important position over the next 3-4 seasons.
Tom Brady might be the best quarterback ever, but he’s not the best in the NFL right now. He certainly won’t be the best in 2022.
He’s human, after all, and at age 42, regression is inevitable even for someone with six Super Bowl rings. That puts the New England Patriots in an uncertain situation at quarterback two or three years down the road. The New Orleans Saints, with 40-year-old Drew Brees under center, find themselves in a similar scenario.
Other teams, such as the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers, likely will face difficult personnel decisions at the quarterback position much sooner than that. Only a handful of teams, notably the Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks, appear secure in their quarterback situation for years to come.
All this got us thinking about the quarterback situations of the future — and where each of the NFL’s 32 teams ranks in terms of preparedness at the game’s most crucial position.
By quarterback situations, we mean the full overview of each team’s quarterbacks group, including backups and a potential succession plan, if necessary. For this exercise, we will define the future as three to four years down the road.
To help form these opinions, we consulted with a blue-ribbon panel of one former head coach, two former general managers and one current general manager. They were asked for their thoughts on each team’s quarterback situation. They provided insight to inform our rankings.
With that in mind, we present Touchdown Wire’s future quarterback rankings for every NFL team, from worst to first:
32. Miami Dolphins
Earlier this season, many observers accused the Dolphins of tanking to earn the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and presumably select a quarterback. Since then, Miami (2-8) has been eclipsed by the ineptitude of Cincinnati (0-10) and Washington (1-9), so the Dolphins might not get the first QB off the board. Currently, the Dolphins have Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen on their roster. Rosen has failed in his playing time. There’s no way he’ll be back next year. The Dolphins have the option to hang onto Fitzpatrick, 36, who’s currently under contract next season at $5.5 million. It makes sense to keep Fitzpatrick around for one more year to help groom a young quarterback. That could be LSU’s Joe Burrow, Alabama’s Tua Tagavailoa (although his recent hip injury now complicates his draft status), Oregon’s Justin Herbert or Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts. Two members of my panel said they like Burrow better than Tagovailoa. Either way, it’s going to take some time to develop a young quarterback.
31. Chicago Bears
For the moment, Mitchell Trubisky is Chicago’s starting quarterback. But it doesn’t appear that he will be in that role next year — although he remains under contract and the team holds a fifth-year option on the No. 2 overall pick from 2017. Given his level of play this season, it’s highly unlikely he will receive the option year, and he might not even see 2020 with the Bears — although the cap hit for cutting him would be slightly more than $9 million. The Bears are 4-6 after going 12-4 last year. There’s one main reason for the decline. That’s Trubisky. My panelists say he’s holding the offense back and could end up keeping a good team out of the playoffs. All four panelists agree Trubisky should be nothing more than a backup. Current backup Chase Daniel’s contract expires after this season. So there’s no telling who will be Chicago’s quarterback next year. Maybe the Bears will draft a quarterback. But with a talented roster already in place, the Bears should be first in line to sign New Orleans backup Teddy Bridgewater as a free agent.
30. Cincinnati Bengals
Veteran Andy Dalton has been benched, and the Bengals are giving rookie fourth-rounder Ryan Finley a shot. There should be no turning back to Dalton, even though he remains under contract for 2020 with a $17.5 million scheduled salary. The Bengals can cut Dalton after the season without any salary cap ramifications. It’s too early to judge Finley. Cincinnati is going to end up with an early draft pick and could have a shot at Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert or Jalen Hurts. The Bengals will be starting over. But, given their current state, that’s not a bad thing. “Dalton had more than enough time and couldn’t win consistently,” one panelist said. “I have no idea what they have in Finley. But they have to draft a quarterback if they’re sitting there at No. 1 or 2.”
29. Washington Redskins
The current situation is a mess. Veterans Colt McCoy and Case Keenum, who clearly aren’t the answer, each is in the last year of their contract. The Redskins have little choice but to play rookie Dwayne Haskins, who has five interceptions and two touchdown passes, the rest of this season. Call it an audition for Haskins. But this situation is complicated because the Redskins currently have interim coach Bill Callahan, who took over when Jay Gruden was fired. There will be a new coach next year, and he might not like Haskins. With an early draft pick likely, the new coach might want his own guy. Give up on Haskins after only one season? Arizona did it with 2018 first-round pick Josh Rosen after drafting Kyler Murray. All four of our panelists said Haskins was overrated when he was drafted.
The Redskins will attend Colin Kaepernick’s workout on Saturday, but there’s approximately a zero percent chance that they ever sign him.
Some major news came out in the NFL this week and a major story subsequently broke yesterday in Washington. The NFL announced that quarterback Colin Kaepernick would be holding a private workout for all 32 teams this Saturday in Atlanta, and the Redskins announced on Wednesday that they would be sending a scout to the workout.
So what does that mean… would the Redskins actually consider signing Kaepernick if he looks good on Saturday?
No. It’s not going to happen. In fact, USA Today recently ranked the 32 NFL teams from most-likely to least-likely to bring in the free-agent QB who hasn’t played since 2017, and the Redskins come in all the way at No. 32.
They were 6-3 last season on the day starting QB Alex Smith suffered his horrible leg injury. But rather than call Kaepernick, team brass opted for Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez and Josh Johnson and a downward spiral. With first-rounder Dwayne Haskins now installed as the starter and a high draft pick assuredly coming down the pike no matter how well Haskins plays, no chance the ‘Skins change course.
Not only do the Redskins currently have a semblance of a plan at the QB spot, but they also are likely the last franchise that Kaepernick — a social justice warrior — would play for, considering that their mascot has been seen as a racist symbol by many groups in the nation.
The Redskins will be in attendance at the workouts, but they have a zero percent chance of signing him.
Jefferson is in just his second year as a pro. He was drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
With the Browns in 2019, Jefferson only made an appearance in one game, and that game came in week one against the Titans. In that game, Jefferson recorded just one tackle.
Hopefully, we see Malik find a new home soon. After all, he was a third-round pick last year for a reason.
Watch as Seattle Seahawks defensive back Quandre Diggs gets his first interception with his new team
A few weeks ago, former Texas Longhorn defensive back Quandre Diggs was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Seattle Seahawks. Last night, Diggs saw his first action with Seattle in a clash between the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers went into this Monday Night Football matchup as the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL. The Seahawks were able to stun the 49ers in San Francisco, winning in overtime by a score of 27-24.
About midway through the 3rd quarter, Diggs was able to intercept 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the score being 10-7 in favor of San Francisco. This interception led to a Seahawks touchdown, giving them the lead.
On the night, Diggs was able to tally two tackles, one of which was solo, a pass defense, and this interception.
