Eagles updated 76-player roster as 2024 offseason program gets underway

We’re looking at the Philadelphia Eagles updated 76 man roster as the offseason workout program gets underway

The Eagles are back at the NovaCare Complex as the offseason program begins for 76 select veterans and second-year players.

The nine-week training program has three phases: one mandatory minicamp for the entire roster and one rookie minicamp for each group.

Phase One consists of the first two weeks of the program, with activities limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two consists of the next three weeks of the program with on-field workouts, which may include individual or group instruction.

Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program, during which teams may conduct ten days of organized team practice activities, or “OTAs.”

No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are allowed.

The Eagles are changing their offseason program, including adding a mandatory minicamp for the first time under Nick Sirianni. They will have 7 OTAs (May 20, May 22-23, May 28, May 30-31) and three days of mandatory minicamp (June 4-6). In 2022 and 2023, they had six total OTAs.

With the workouts and on-field training underway, we’re looking at Philadelphia’s updated 76-player roster ahead of next week’s NFL draft.

Every move the Eagles have made so far this offseason

We’re breaking down and reviewing every move the Philadelphia Eagles have made during the 2024 NFL off-season

We’re 16 days away from the start of the 2024 NFL draft’s first round, and the Eagles along with 31 other teams have started preparing for a fast approaching training camp and regular season.

Philadelphia has been dilligent in retooling the coaching staff and a roster that’ll be without Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce for the first time since 2010.

The Eagles have been active this offseason, adding Saquon Barkley, Bryce Huff and Kenny Pickett among others, while Haason Reddick was traded, and a handful of other free agents departed.

With the final draft preparation underway, we’re looking at every move Philadelphia has made this off-season.

15 biggest salary cap hits for the Eagles in 2024 after first wave of NFL free agency

We’re looking at the 15 biggest cap hits for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024 after the first wave of NFL free agency

Change is always good for the soul, and after losing six of their final seven games, including a wild-card loss to the Buccaneers, Philadelphia has undergone a dramatic reconstruction that could pay off with championship dividends.

Offensive coordinators Brian Johnson (Commanders) and Sean Desai (Rams) have left, replaced by Vic Fangio (DC) and Kellen Moore (OC).

The Eagles have retooled their roster on both sides of the football after inking DE Bryce Huff, RB Saquon Barkley, OLB Zach Baun, OL Matt Hennessy, WR DeVante Parker, S/CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson, LB Devin White, LB Oren Burks, DT PJ Mustipher, WR Parris Campbell, and CB Tyler Hall to deals during the first wave.

Philadelphia then traded for quarterback Kenny Pickett while extending Landon Dickerson and Jake Elliott.

Philadelphia currently has about  $33,657,986 in cap space per Over The Cap, and they’re spending about $100+ million plus on both sides of the football.

The Eagles also have a Haason Reddick dilemma that’ll be resolved in the next week or more.

The biggest salary cap hits have changed, with Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox counting until they’re officially released on June 1.

With the first wave of free agency completed, we’re taking an updated look at the 15 biggest salary cap hits for the Eagles, according to Over The Cap.

Eagles to sign QB Will Grier to a 1-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing quarterback Will Grier to a one-year deal

The Eagles are adding another quarterback to the roster, as Adam Schefter reports the team is signing veteran Will Grier.

Grier, who will turn 29 next month, has not seen the field for regular-season action since 2019 in Carolina.

Grier spent two seasons in Dallas working with new Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier.

The Cowboys claimed Grier off waivers in September 2021, but he was not active for any games. In 2022, Grier was signed back to the Dallas practice squad after being waived in August and then signed to the active roster in October. Last year he had brief stints on the rosters of the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers.

A solid player at West Virginia, Grier entered the NFL as a third-round pick (No. 100 overall) by the Carolina Panthers in the 2019 NFL draft. He was the fifth quarterback selected in that draft.

Chargers 2024 offseason position preview: Quarterback

Evaluating the Chargers’ quarterback room entering the offseason.

After receiving a contract that briefly made him the highest-paid quarterback of all time, Justin Herbert was largely the same player on tape in 2023 that we’ve become accustomed to seeing in most of his other seasons. Unfortunately, what surrounded Herbert on offense was not as strong. Several high-profile, season-ending injuries collapsed the Chargers season around him in addition to the adverse coaching situation.

20 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 3000+ yards in 13 games wasn’t going to win him awards, but it also became clear that the state of the offense, in addition to his own personal injuries affected what the potential production could’ve been.

Herbert played through fractures of his non-throwing hand throughout the season. Eventually, he’d be shut down after he injured his index finger on his throwing hand against the Broncos in Week 14. While he could’ve potentially played through it under some circumstances as opposed to opting for the surgery outright, the Chargers rapidly falling out of the playoff picture made the decision to sit him easy.

To kick off our offseason position preview series, we’re evaluating the quarterback group entering the offseason.

Report: Patriots never seriously considered Will Grier starting at QB

Will Grier reportedly was never in the Patriots’ plans to start at QB, despite being told he could compete.

The New England Patriots quarterback room was inconsistent at times in the 2023 season.

The team carried primarily three quarterbacks with Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe and Will Grier making up the room. But Grier was never a serious consideration to start for the Patriots, as noted in a detailed report from the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed.

Grier was signed by the Patriots on September 22 off the Bengals’ practice squad. He was waived on November 25 and re-signed a short time later to the practice squad.

He was signed off the New England practice squad on December 18, landing with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Despite all the dysfunction in the quarterback room, it became clear that Grier was never going to get a shot at starting for New England, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London.

The Herald wrote:

Newly signed backup Will Grier was never a serious consideration, per sources, despite being told he could compete for playing time. That left Jones all alone in a quarterbacks room that sources familiar with the room paint as quiet and uncomfortable.

This is just another example of dysfunction within the Patriots’ organization. Given the struggles of Zappe and Jones, the fact that Grier never got playing time is a bit surprising.

Chargers make roster moves on Tuesday

The Chargers made a handful of roster moves on Tuesday.

The Chargers made a handful of roster moves on Tuesday.

Los Angeles signed quarterback Will Grier to the active roster. To make room for Grier, the team waived rookie QB Max Duggan.

Additionally, L.A. signed center Cameron Tom to the active roster from the practice squad and placed Will Clapp on injured reserve.

The Chargers also signed center Brent Laing to the practice squad.

Grier will be the backup to Easton Stick.

With Clapp on IR, Brenden Jaimes will serve as the team’s starting center.

JoJo Wooden’s first move as interim general manager came on Monday morning.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Chargers have signed quarterback Will Grier to the active roster. Grier was previously on the Patriots practice squad.

A third-round pick in 2019, the 28-year-old Grier has spent time with the Panthers, Cowboys, Bengals, and Patriots. His time in Dallas overlapped with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier.

Grier has not seen regular-season action since his rookie season in 2019, when he started two games for the Panthers. He went 28 of 52 for 228 yards, adding 22 yards on the ground, but threw 4 interceptions to 0 touchdowns.

Grier will likely be added as the backup to Easton Stick, who took over the starting job from Justin Herbert after the franchise quarterback was placed on injured reserve with a broken finger last week.

A corresponding move to open the roster spot for Grier has yet to be announced.

Report: Chargers sign Patriots QB off practice squad

Patriots practice squad QB has reportedly signed with the Chargers.

For a second time in less than a week, another team has signed a New England Patriots quarterback off the practice squad.

Last week, it was the Baltimore Ravens signing Malik Cunningham, and this time, it’s the Los Angeles Chargers reportedly signing Will Grier off the Patriots’ practice squad.

The Chargers are fresh off one of the most embarrassing blowouts in franchise history. With Justin Herbert sidelined with an injury, the team is leaving no stone unturned at the quarterback position. Grier never saw the field for the Patriots, but he is a veteran player with starting experience at the quarterback position.

Perhaps this move could give Grier the opportunities he never found in New England. As for the Patriots, they’re suddenly down to only Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones as the only two quarterbacks left on their roster.

Patriots reportedly pick starting QB for Sunday’s game vs Chargers

The Patriots have reportedly made their decision on a starting QB.

Move over, Mac Jones. There’s a new starting quarterback for the New England Patriots.

On Friday, The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reported the Patriots are starting second-year quarterback Bailey Zappe for the first time this season in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Backup Malik Cunningham is expected to be elevated from the practice squad and work into the mix as well in package plays. Meanwhile, Jones isn’t expected to take snaps at all, unless an injury forces him onto the field.

It’s a major shake-up for the Patriots, but it’s also one that was believed to be coming after Jones was benched in back-to-back games.

It has been a rough season for the former Alabama standout, who hasn’t played with anywhere near the same level of confidence he showed in his rookie season.

Keep in mind, Zappe starting this week doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be the starter moving forward. Granted, he’ll have an opportunity to earn more future starts if he plays well. But the starting quarterback situation in New England could turn into a weekly decision by coach Bill Belichick moving forward.
