Ex-Falcons QB Matt Ryan reflects on lack of appreciation from fans

Ex-Falcons QB Matt Ryan reflected on his lack of appreciation from fans during an interview with Cam Newton

Where does former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan rank among the greatest players at his position? On a statistical level, Ryan has the seventh-most passing yards (62,792) in NFL history and ranks ninth all-time in touchdown passes (381).

Despite his on-field accomplishments in Atlanta, Ryan’s efforts weren’t always appreciated by the Falcons fan base. During an interview with Cam Newton, Ryan was asked whether or not he felt appreciated by the fans during his 14-year run in Atlanta.

“The short answer, is probably no,” said Ryan. “But, at the same time, I’m proud of what I did, and the time that I spent there. I think there was a level of consistency that we provided. The division was a juggernaut.”

Newton, an Atlanta, native, said he brought the topic up because he felt Ryan hasn’t received the respect he deserves.

“But the reason why I ask that question — a native of Atlanta,” said Newton. “I went through the transition from the Michael Vick to Matt Ryan, and I will say I don’t think you do have the measure of respect of the body of work that you did.”

The two went on to discuss the philanthropic work that Ryan has done throughout the city of Atlanta, even after leaving the organization in 2022. However, the biggest issue many have with Ryan is the fact that he was part of the team’s Super Bowl collapse.

Obviously, a loss like that stays with you, but Ryan doesn’t deserve to have his entire legacy tarnished over the result of a game in which he performed extremely well. Ryan completed 17 of 23 pass attempts for 284 yards, two touchdowns and a passer rating of 144.1 in that fateful loss to the Patriots.

Former Falcons QB Matt Ryan believes he should be in the Hall of Fame

Former Falcons QB Matt Ryan believes that he should be in Pro Football Hall of Fame

An induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is the ultimate accomplishment for any former NFL player. However, as the league continues to evolve, the requirements to get into football’s most exclusive club have become harder to understand.

This has left a handful of players, including former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, wondering whether or not they will someday be inducted. Ryan passed for 62,792 yards, 381 touchdowns, 183 interceptions and a career passer rating of 93.6 over 15 NFL seasons (14 in Atlanta).

Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team asked Ryan if he should be in the Hall of Fame. “I do,” said Ryan. “The numbers speak for themselves. The consistency speaks for itself. I hope it’s something that happens one day.”

Had the Falcons not collapsed against the Patriots in the Super Bowl, Ryan would likely be a lock for the Hall of Fame. With over a decade of consistent production under his belt, though, he should still have a legitimate chance to end up in Canton.

Atlanta traded Ryan to the Colts in 2022, which ended up being his final season, barring a comeback. Ryan spent 2023 in the broadcast booth for CBS.

Matt Ryan got some long-awaited payback against Cameron Jordan

Matt Ryan got some long-awaited payback against Cameron Jordan. The ex-Falcons QB finally sacked his greatest rival:

Matt Ryan finally enjoyed some payback. The ex-Atlanta Falcons quarterback surprised his nemesis on the CBS Sports set ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, sneaking in from offstage to tackle Cameron Jordan. And the New Orleans Saints defensive end took it in stride, laughing and embracing one of his oldest rivals.

“Never have I been sacked in my life,” Jordan later wrote on social media in disbelief.

He’s normally the one sacking the quarterback. Jordan and Ryan set the record together for the most sacks of a single quarterback by a single defender (23), though it’s debatable whether Ryan is proud of his part in that accomplishment.

Either way, it’s clear that there’s a ton of respect between the two. Jordan got Ryan one last time during pregame warmups when he was on the call for a Saints game earlier this season. Ryan hasn’t made his retirement official, but he’s been working for CBS as a broadcaster in recent years, and it’s a role he’s grown comfortable in. There’s a good chance Jordan will join him on the other side of the microphone some day soon.

Former Falcons QB Matt Ryan is the latest to praise new Commanders coach Dan Quinn

The former NFL MVP remains a huge fan of Dan Quinn.

New Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn will look for a franchise quarterback this offseason. With the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, Washington is in an excellent position to land one of the draft’s top three quarterbacks entering the league.

When Quinn was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-20, he had his franchise quarterback Matt Ryan. Arguably the greatest success Ryan enjoyed over his outstanding 15-year career came when he played under Quinn.

These days, Ryan is an NFL analyst and is in Las Vegas for this weekend’s Super Bowl. With Quinn having recently been named as Washington’s coach, Ryan was asked about Quinn.

“Dan, Dan is an awesome coach and I love my time with him in Atlanta,” Ryan said. “I think they’re going to get somebody who has got great energy. Day in and day out, really good energy. One of his greatest strengths is building the right culture, and in my opinion, that is what’s needed in Washington. I think they’ll do an excellent job. I like the staff they’re starting to put together. They’ll be a team that’s going to play hard, and that’s kind of the hallmark of what he believes in. He knows how to motivate guys extremely well. I’m happy for Dan, and I really think he deserved another opportunity as a head coach and I think it’s a really great fit with Washington.”

Things may have ended badly for Quinn in Atlanta, but he maintains the respect of his former players, including his former quarterback.

Former NFL MVP Matt Ryan names top five QB prospects for 2024 NFL draft

See where Caleb Williams lands in Matt Ryan’s list of top NFL QB prospects.

Matt Ryan knows what it takes to be a top quarterback in the National Football League. Ryan won the 2016 NFL Most Valuable Player Award with the Atlanta Falcons, teaming with then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to create one of the most potent offenses in the history of the NFL.

Ryan has stepped away from playing football. He worked this past NFL season as a game analyst for CBS Sports. He appeared on the NFL Today studio show for CBS Sports on Sunday. He seems to be embracing a new chapter of his life as a football analyst. It will be interesting to see if his career as a commentator takes off.

Ryan, who played in Super Bowl LI and came achingly close to winning an NFL championship before losing to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in overtime, has thoughts on the top five quarterback prospects for the 2024 NFL draft.

Let’s go through the list and see what Ryan had to say:

Ex-Falcons QB Matt Ryan weighs in on Belichick-to-Atlanta rumors

“Belichick makes sense if they get a veteran guy. I think if you’re drafting young, I think you go with a younger coach” — Matt Ryan on ATL

The Atlanta Falcons have a tough decision to make when it comes to picking their next head coach. Should they go with an experienced coach like Bill Belichick, who would likely make significant roster changes, or will the team look to hire one of the NFL’s bright young coordinators?

Former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan weighed in on during the CBS pregame show on Sunday.

“Well, here’s the thing, there’s a lot of baggage that comes with that because of what happened in the Super Bowl,” said Ryan. “So it’s an awkward thing but if you look at the organization like Jonathon said, an owner that is getting older and is anxious to win right now, and you look at their roster — we’ve had them twice this year — they’re built to win now.”

Ryan went on to compliment the defense before saying the team needs to find a quarterback. The former NFL MVP thinks the decision at QB could affect the coaching hire.

“The defense plays good football, they’ve got an excellent offensive line, good skill positions, but they’ve gotta figure out the quarterback. I think Bill Belichick makes sense if they get a veteran guy. I think if you’re drafting young, I think you go with a younger coach — somebody that’s going to be there longer.”

Matt Ryan’s excellent breakdown of a botched Falcons play highlighted his broadcasting potential

Matt Ryan is really good at calling NFL games.

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has a bright future in NFL broadcasting, and his call on his former team’s game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday was further proof of that.

While talking about Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder missing a red zone pass, Ryan succinctly broke down Ridder’s footwork and how it contributed to the errant throw.

Ryan’s process of explaining to the folks at home how this play didn’t materialize for Atlanta was a masterclass in clearly communicated football insight from a color commentator who knows the game well.

It’s the kind of expert knowledge football fans cherish as they further try to understand what they’re watching and why it happens like it does.

Ryan has done quite well in his first season in the booth with CBS Sports, and it won’t surprise us if the network continues to put him in bigger games in the future.

Honestly, we could see a world where Ryan is helping broadcast a Super Bowl for the network one day. He’s that good at what he does.

Matt Ryan to call Falcons-Saints matchup in Week 18

Ex-Falcons QB Matt Ryan will be in the broadcast booth for Sunday’s season finale against the New Orleans Saints

A familiar face will be in attendance when the Atlanta Falcons face the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. Former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is set to call Sunday’s NFC South showdown for CBS.

Ryan will be joined in the broadcast booth by Andrew Catalon, Tiki Barber and A.J. Ross, according to the CBS Sports Twitter account.

Ryan previously called Atlanta’s Week 6 game against the Washington Commanders. The Falcons lost 24-16 and Ryan got to see the team’s dysfunction up close from the broadcast booth.

Ryan was traded away during the 2022 offseason after the Falcons’ failed pursuit of Deshaun Watson. If Atlanta loses in Week 18, there’s a good chance it could be Arthur Smith’s last game as head coach.

Smith has gone 21-29 over the last three seasons. The Falcons were expected to take the next step this year, but poor quarterback play ultimately doomed them.

Sunday’s game kicks off at 1:00 p.m. ET at the Caesers Superdome in New Orleans.
