Throwback Thursday: What happened in Alabama’s 2022 pre-Iron Bowl matchup

Looking back at Alabama’s 2022 pre-Iron Bowl FCS matchup against Austin Peay

Believe it or not, the 2023 college football regular season is nearly over. In just a couple of weeks, conference championship weekend will be here and the final College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled.

For [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide, it is all about taking care of business. Despite some early season struggles, Alabama has won eight straight and is in a good position to earn a birth in the CFP if they can win out.

Up next for the Tide is a matchup with the Chattanooga Mocs on Saturday morning from Tuscaloosa.

It has become the norm for Coach Saban and the Tide to schedule an FCS opponent the week before their annual rivalry matchup with the Auburn Tigers.

On this edition of Throwback Thursday, let’s look back at last season’s pre-Iron Bowl matchup against the Austin Peay Governors.

Cowboys-Rams Throwback Thursday: Best short gain in team history?

Which was the craziest short-yardage gain in Cowboys’ history? Tony Romo’s escape vs the Rams or Marion Barber’s against the Pats? Relive both here. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up to face off against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 8 of the 2023 season. The teams have met 28 times previously, with Dallas owning a 15-13 advantage in the head-to-head series. The teams have split the last four contests and Dallas has won six of the last 10. Most of the Cowboys’ victories during this recent stretch have been blowouts while most of the Rams’ wins were close contests.

One of Dallas’ blowouts occurred in 2007, when the Cowboys broke a 7-7 tie late in the first half and scored the final 28 points en route to a 35-7 victory. The Week 4 win sent Dallas to a 4-0 record at the time as it was one of the best Cowboys’ teams of this millennia. There was one lasting memory from the contest though, and it wasn’t even a scoring play.

Throwback Thursday: Highlights, more from Alabama’s 2021 win over Tennessee

What happened the last time Alabama hosted Tennessee?

We are now just a couple of days away from the “Third Saturday in October” when Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Volunteers travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Aside from taking home bragging rights to a historic rivalry, both Alabama and Tennessee are trying to position themselves for a spot in Atlanta for the SEC Championship.

It is now time for Throwback Thursday where each week we look at a previous matchup between Alabama and the upcoming opponent.

This week we go back just two seasons to the last time Tennessee played in Tuscaloosa.

Throwback Thursday: The wild finish in 2007 that started Alabama’s winning streak over Arkansas

Throwback Thursday: How Alabama football’s 16-game winning streak over Arkansas got started!

In a couple of days, [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide will look to put together their 17th straight win over the Arkansas Razorbacks when the Hogs travel to Tuscaloosa this Saturday.

As hard as it is to believe, the Crimson Tide have not lost to the Razorbacks under the leadership of Coach Saban who first arrived in 2007.

So how did this incredible winning streak get started for Alabama? On this edition of Throwback Thursday, we are going to show you the incredible finish between Alabama and Arkansas from Coach Saban’s inaugural season in Tuscaloosa before he became the G.O.A.T.

With time running down in the fourth quarter, Crimson Tide quarterback John Parker Wilson would connect with wide receiver Matt Caddell for a 3-yard touchdown pass to give Alabama the 41-38 victory over the Hogs.

Take a look!

While this season’s version of the matchup is not likely to provide as much drama and action, it’s always fun when the Tide takes on the Razorbacks.

Throwback Thursday: Insane stat line reveals what kept Alabama-Texas A&M close in 2022

It’s a wonder that Alabama was able to come away with a victory over Texas A&M in 2022

Everyone remembers that Alabama starting quarterback [autotag]Jalen Milroe[/autotag] received his first career start last season against Texas A&M as Bryce Young was healing up from a shoulder injury.

Fast forward to the present and Milroe is now set to make the sixth start of his career and second against the Aggies on Saturday afternoon from Kyle Field in College Station.

Last year’s matchup was a strange one. Not only was Milroe making his first career start, but Texas A&M was reeling and was honestly just flat-out bad in 2022. Nevertheless, the Aggies kept it close and even had an opportunity to win it on the last play of the game despite Alabama being the much better team.

This insane stat line below basically tells the story of what all went wrong for the Crimson Tide that allowed the Aggies to stay in it.

While Alabama was able to escape with a victory last season, there is no doubt that repeating that stat line this weekend would lead to a loss against the Aggies.

Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for more in-depth coverage of Alabama-Texas A&M!

Throwback Thursday: Top plays from Alabama’s last trip to Starkville

What happened the last time Alabama played in Starkville?

[autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama football team will look to recreate some of the magic from the team’s last trip to Starkville when they took down the Mississippi State Bulldogs 49-9 in 2021.

The Alabama defense suffocated Will Rogers and the Mississippi State offense, holding the Bulldogs to under 300 yards and just nine points.

Will Anderson Jr. dominated the offensive line of the Bulldogs racking up four sacks in the contest.

Offensively, Alabama was led by quarterback Bryce Young who threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns while completing over 70% of his pass attempts.

On this edition of Throwback Thursday, we will look back at some of the top plays from Alabama’s emphatic win over the Bulldogs in Starkville.

Throwback Thursday: DeVonta Smith’s incredible performance vs. Ole Miss in 2019

Who remembers this record-breaking performance?

[autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide are now just a couple of days away from their 2023 SEC opener inside Bryant-Denny Stadium against [autotag]Lane Kiffin[/autotag] and the Ole Miss Rebels.

Alabama and Ole Miss has annually been an exciting matchup, but with Kiffin now in Oxford, a little extra flavor has been added to the series.

On this week’s edition of Throwback Thursday, we look back at one of Alabama’s greatest single-game performances and we don’t have to dig too deep to find it.

In 2019, wide receiver [autotag]DeVonta Smith[/autotag] put together a recording-breaking performance against the Rebels, hauling in 11 catches for 274 yards and five touchdowns in Alabama’s 59-31 victory over Ole Miss.

Below are Smith’s highlights from his epic display of talent!

Alabama will host Ole Miss this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS. Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for continuous coverage leading up to the crucial SEC West matchup.

Throwback Thursday: A look back at the Bowden Bowl

The Clemson-Florida State rivalry is one of the most entertaining in college football and it started with a father and son.

The Clemson-Florida State rivalry is one of the most entertaining in college football.

And it started with a father and son.

Bobby Bowden started at Florida State in 1976 and rewrote college football history. Most people recognize Bowden’s most prominent rivals as Florida and Miami.

It wasn’t until 1992 that Clemson became a thorn in his butt when the Noles joined the ACC. Clemson was recognized as a basketball then, but the two programs’ first game as conference foes resulted in a 24-20 Florida State victory. Florida State won the next ten matchups.

Things began to change when Tommy Bowden became head coach of Clemson in 1998, paving the way for the first-ever meeting between a father and a son as opposing head coaches in football.

The first game 1999, won by Florida State 17-14, set a new attendance record of 86,200 at Clemson University’s Memorial Stadium. Tommy Bowden’s first victory came on his father’s birthday in 2003, when his Tigers defeated the third-ranked FSU, putting a dent in their chances of winning the national championship.

During the Bowden Bowl era, FSU won five conference championships, two of which were won by teams that Tommy Bowden coached to victory in 2003 and 2005.

The Bowden Bowl series ended when Tommy resigned as head coach six games into the 2008 football season. Bobby Bowden won the overall series with five wins and four losses.

Even though Clemson ended up on the losing end of the Bowden Bowl, the era helped Clemson become a legitimate football school in the ACC and the country.

Throwback Thursday: Chiefs set NFL record with 8 rushing TDs vs. Falcons in 2004

#TBT to when the #Chiefs were a much different team and set an NFL record for team rushing touchdowns in a single game:

The NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs have changed quite a bit since 2004. Most offenses in the league were predicated on a strong running game, including Kansas City’s offense under former head coach Dick Vermeil.

During Week 7 of that season, the Chiefs stamped their names in the NFL history books when it comes to rushing offense. After the team got wind of some bulletin board material because of its 1-4 start to the season, it changed up the game plan against the Atlanta Falcons.

K.C. would run the ball 49 times for 271 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per attempt. Teammates Priest Holmes and Derrick Blaylock each rushed for four touchdowns to set an NFL record for the most rushing touchdowns by a team in a single game.

“We were getting ready to play the Falcons and they were talking like mad junk,” former Chiefs FB Tony Richardson said, via KC Sports Network’s One-on-One. “And so Vermeil was like, ‘We’re going to run the ball every single down.'”

They had the ability to pound the rock because they had a world-class offensive line featuring Willie Roaf, Brian Waters, Casey Wiegmann, Will Shields and John Welbourn.

The Chiefs took a 35-3 halftime lead and cruised to a 56-10 win. No passing touchdowns were thrown by either team. After the game, Waters became the first offensive lineman to ever be named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Unless the NFL has a vast change in offensive philosophy, the record of eight rushing touchdowns may stand the test of time.
