5 Remaining free agents that just make sense for the Lions

The free agent market isn’t strong but there are still some players out there who might help Detroit

As the 2022 NFL draft has passed us by, and the early stages of free agency are in the rearview mirror, remaining free agents will be awaiting calls from a slew of teams, now that they don’t account into the 2023 compensatory pick formula, post-draft.

The Detroit Lions had a sneaky excellent offseason that should make them a much-improved team in 2022. Take a look at the additions the Detroit Lions made through the NFL Draft and Free Agency (excluding UDFAs)

2022 Additions: DJ Chark, Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams, DeShon Elliot, Mike Huges, Garrett Griffin, Chris Board, Joshua Paschal, Kerby Joseph, James Mitchell, Malcolm Rodriguez, James Houston, and Chase Lucas

But with all of this behind us, there are still some talented veteran free agents on the market. Here’s a look at some of the better fits for this roster, and why they just make too much sense. Detroit still struggles to attract big-name free agents, but in 2022, with this improved roster, we may finally see people wanting to become a part of One Pride.

Bengals cut center Trey Hopkins

Zac Taylor confirmed the move.

The Cincinnati Bengals have moved on from starting center Trey Hopkins.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed the news on Friday while introducing new free agents Alex Cappa and Ted Karras.

The move creates roughly $6 million in cap space for the Bengals and was a predictable domino once the team signed Karras to play center and Cappa to man the right guard position. He was right behind cornerback Trae Waynes as far as upcoming releases go.

An amazing undrafted story, Hopkins powered through multiple serious injuries and different positions before finding a home as the starting center. He came back early from a serious knee injury to play 15 games last season, but gets swept up here in the line overhaul, largely because of his big salary.

Should Hopkins not find a home elsewhere, there’s an angle where the team might have him back as immediate depth.

As far as cap space goes, Hopkins’ cap savings essentially matches the Karras contract, making it a wash. Joe Burrow and Co., as of this writing, are trying to recruit La’el Collins.

WATCH: Trey Hopkins and Aaron Donald get into scuffle during Super Bowl

Trey Hopkins doesn’t let Aaron Donald’s hit on Joe Burrow slide.

In the biggest football game of the year, and likely the biggest sporting event of the year, a former Longhorn has become one of the most talked about aspects of the game.

He doesn’t play a skill position, and certainly isn’t a quarterback, but Cincinnati Bengals center Trey Hopkins is still a popular subject on Twitter. The reason being because of the extracurricular activities he got himself into with one of football’s most feared players in Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Early in the third quarter of Super Bowl 56, Bengals quarterback Joe (Shiesty) Burrow was left with no options and seemed to be running out of bounds to avoid getting hit. The only issue being the fact that Donald gave him quite the assist as he launched Burrow out of bounds.

This led to Hopkins pushing and causing somewhat of a skirmish between the whole Bengals offensive line and Donald.

As it currently stands, Hopkins and the Bengals have gotten off to a hot start and are looking to close out a victory over the Rams.

Former Longhorn Trey Hopkins to play in the Super Bowl

A former Longhorn has played in the last 17 Super Bowls.

Former Longhorn offensive lineman Trey Hopkins will have his chance at the Lombardi Trophy. Hopkins appearance will make 17 straight seasons a Longhorn is represented in the Super Bowl.

Hopkins played in 37 games for the Longhorns from 2010-2013. He went undrafted in the 2014 NFL draft before finding a home in Cincinnati.

Rookie Joesph Ossai is also on the Bengals roster but has been on the injured reserve after suffering a preseason knee injury.

The Bengals made an improbable postseason run to make the Super Bowl. They won three nail-biter games against Las Vegas, Tennesee and Kansas City. Each game came down to the final play.

Hopkins will look to add his name to a long list of former Longhorns with a Super Bowl ring. Most recently, Alex Okafor won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2019.

The Bengals will take on the Rams on Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Riley Reiff, Trey Hopkins injury update after win over Steelers

Some small news for the Bengals after the big win.

Lost in the hype of the Cincinnati Bengals putting a 41-10 beatdown on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 12 was the team losing offensive linemen Riley Reiff and Trey Hopkins to injury.

But it turns out the injury news is mostly of the good variety.

According to head coach Zac Taylor, Hopkins doesn’t have a serious injury and Reiff could have returned to the game in an emergency sort of situation.

It’s a huge sigh of relief for the Bengals. Reiff, the starter at right tackle who came over via free agency this past offseason, suffered an ankle issue the team was mum about for a notable amount of time. He’s been solid on the edge and, paired with new right guard Hakeem Adeniji, helping the right side become a strength.

As for the center Hopkins, he got rolled up on in a brutal-looking injury but managed to jog off. That it’s not serious is remarkable — and a good thing considering he’s starting to get back to pre-injury form after coming back early from a season-ending injury suffered last December.

At this point, it wouldn’t be too surprising if either of these guys got held out for precautionary reasons next week against the Chargers. But the fact it’s not a long-term injury for either means the team gets to keep enjoying fantastic injury luck this year.

Report: Bengals center Trey Hopkins should be ready for training camp

A new report gives the Cincinnati Bengals good news about center Trey Hopkins.

[jwplayer hHwtLOQo]

One of the quiet — but bigger — problems facing the Cincinnati Bengals offensive line this offseason is the center position.

And unlike the majority of the other spots, it’s a problem due to injury, not performance.

Center Trey Hopkins tore his ACL in the team’s season-ending loss to Baltimore in Week 17, a devastating setback for player and unit both given the timing.

And yet according to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Tyler Dragon (via Lindsay Patterson), Hopkins is expected to be ready for training camp.

It would be a stunning turnaround for Hopkins given the timing of the injury. Knee issues certainly aren’t what they once were, but a Week 17 injury made it easy to write off Hopkins until perhaps the season’s midway point.

And maybe the Bengals will treat it that way this offseason anyway, opting to add a center in free agency or the draft as insurance. But Hopkins has been an amazing undrafted story turned into quality starter once finally given the chance and the sooner he’s back, the better for Joe Burrow.

Bengals confirm center Trey Hopkins suffered torn ACL vs. Ravens

Cincinnati Bengals center Trey Hopkins needs surgery to repair his injury.

Cincinnati Bengals center Trey Hopkins tore his ACL during Sunday’s season-ending loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor confirmed the news Monday during a presser.

It’s a sour point atop the 38-3 loss in which the defense coughed up 404 rushing yards. Hopkins had been a bright spot for the team all season after the coaching staff finally shoved aside the Billy Price experiment.

Now Hopkins will have to spend his offseason rehabbing and the team will have to think about making multiple additions to the interior of the offensive line this offseason.

Hopkins, alongside left tackle Jonah Williams, was one of the lone bright spots for the future along the line in front of Joe Burrow.

What would an NFL offense look like comprised of only Texas Longhorns?

The Texas Longhorns have produced a plethora of offensive talent over the years. So what would an offense of only Longhorns look like?

The Texas Longhorns have provided plenty of NFL talent over the years, but a large portion of that talent came during the Mack Brown era. It wasn’t just Brown that produced NFL talent, as the first Longhorn ever drafted dates all the way back to 1938 when Hugh Wolfe was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round.  Other big names include Bobby Layne, Tom Landry, Tommy Nobis, Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Vince Young and many more.

Manny Rubio-USA TODAY Sports

Given the amount of Longhorns that have made the jump to the NFL and AFL, we were curious what an offense of former Texas players would look like in the NFL today. We used players from the XFL as well to fill out the starters. So let’s get started with the quarterback.
