Chiefs’ Charles Omenihu speaks about not being able to play against the 49ers in Super Bowl

The former 49ers defensive end wasn’t able to suit up for the Super Bowl due to an ACL injury.

In their Super Bowl matchup, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs had multiple connections on the field with different players who have suited up for both sides during their career.

Charvarious Ward, Jerick McKinnon and Richie James all have walked the sidelines of both the 49ers and the Chiefs. Yet, one former member of the 49ers who now plays for the Chiefs wasn’t able to play in the Super Bowl due to an injury.

Former 49ers defensive end turned Kansas City Chief, Charles Omenihu, missed the Super Bowl with an ACL injury. On Tuesday, Omenihu spoke about missing the Super Bowl against his former team in an interview with Kay Adams on the Up And Adams Show.

I think pregame was the worst — pregame and kickoff. Just seeing everybody warming up. I could feel the atmosphere of being at the Super Bowl. But then you’re on the sideline with nothing around. That was the worst of it all. I was just telling myself ‘hopefully you will be back here and playing.’

It wasn’t good. It wasn’t a good feeling at all. I wanted to play so bad. Especially being my former team last year. I felt like this was my opportunity to show y’all like ‘you didn’t want to pay me.’ Y’all let me go. This is kinda like my opportunity to show y’all that was a horrible decision. And the fact that I wasn’t able to do that against them. I have got over it now, but at that time it very much ate at me.

I saw our schedule came out though and we do have them on the schedule next year. I’m hoping it’s around the time I will be back. I really really want to be available for that game.

Omenihu played 11 games with the Chiefs lasts season, racking up 28 tackles and a career-best seven sacks. The former Texas Longhorn played the 2022 season with the 49ers before joining the Chiefs.

5 moves that helped the Chiefs get to Super Bowl LVIII

Check out these five cruciall moves that helped the #Chiefs get to Super Bowl LVIII.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to play in their third Super Bowl in four years on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While the defending champions are certainly no strangers to the big game, their path to the Super Bowl was exceedingly difficult in 2023. Kansas City struggled throughout the regular seasons, looking like a shell of their former selves against opponents like the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8 and Week 16 respectively.

Despite the adversity, the Chiefs tightened up when it mattered most in the playoffs. Victories over the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens on the road dispelled any doubt that Kansas City could hack it in the Super Bowl and earned the Chiefs a chance to defend their Super Bowl LVII title.

A few key moves in the offseason helped Kansas City field a roster worthy of championship contention.

Check out which transactions made the difference for the Chiefs:

Chiefs activate WR Skyy Moore, place DL Charles Omenihu on injured reserve

The #Chiefs activated Skyy Moore and placed Charles Omenihu on injured reserve ahead of their Super Bowl LVIII matchup against the #49ers.

The Kansas City Chiefs made two key roster moves on Wednesday night ahead of their February 11 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Second-year wide receiver Skyy Moore was activated for the Chiefs’ championship bout with the 49ers, and veteran defensive lineman Charles Omenihu was placed on injured reserve after injuring his knee against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.

Moore was a contributor in Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVII win over the Philadelphia Eagles and could play a role in Andy Reid’s game plan against San Francisco on Sunday.

Omenihu joined the Chiefs as a free agent in the 2023 offseason and was among Kansas City’s most productive pass rushers after missing the team’s first six games due to a suspension.

Expect both of these moves to play a factor in the Chiefs’ approach to Super Bowl LVIII on both sides of the ball.

Steve Spagnuolo on replacing Charles Omenihu: ‘Everybody has to up their game’

#Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo told reporters that there will be a group effort to compensate for DL Charles Omenihu’s absence against the #49ers.

Kansas City Chiefs pass rusher Charles Omenihu suffered a torn ACL against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC championship game and will miss Super Bowl LVIII against the San Fransico 49ers.

While addressing the media on Friday, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo explained his strategy to compensate for the loss of Omenihu, and let reporters know which players will have to step up in his absence.

“I’ll tell you; you don’t replace that height and that length that he [Charles Omenihu has, but we’ll have guys to step in there,” Spagnuolo said. “Felix [Anudike-Uzomah] will probably have to step in, everybody has to up their game in a Super Bowl anyway.

“Hopefully, like last week, I think it was decent in the first half where we didn’t have to play as many plays. If the play count gets up, that’s where it gets tough for George [Karlaftis] being out there a lot and Mike [Danna] and that’s when we have to have guys to step in.”

The loss of Omenihu may prove to be a major blow to the Chiefs’ defense, as the 26-year-old pass rusher accumulated seven sacks in 11 games played during the regular season.

Omenihu, who previously played for the 49ers before signing a two-year, $16 million contract with the Chiefs this past offseason, had a strip sack against the Ravens that resulted in a key turnover for Kansas City’s defense.

Chiefs fans react to Charles Omenihu’s season-ending injury

#Chiefs fans on Twitter reacted to the news of Charles Omenihu’s season ending injury.

After a phenomenal performance against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game that saw him strip-sack Lamar Jackson, news broke on Monday that Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Charles Omenihu tore his ACL and would miss Super Bowl LVIII.

Omenihu, who signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in 2023, grew into a major role on Kansas City’s defense after missing the first six games of the regular season.

His absence in the Super Bowl will be a crushing blow for the Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers’ prolific running game, and Kansas City’s coaching staff is sure to be hard at work finding a fix to fill his spot on the team’s front-four.

There was an outpouring of support for Omenihu on social media when Chiefs Kingdom found out about the extent of his injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs will enter their Super Bowl LVIII matchup against the San Francisco 49ers without a key member of their defensive unit. According to reports, veteran defensive end Charles Omenihu suffered a torn ACL during Sunday’s victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game.

The report surfaced on Monday from NFL Network National Correspondent James Palmer via social media.

“Charles Omenihu was optimistic last night, as were the Chiefs about his knee injury. But Omenihu did tear his ACL per source.” posted Palmer on X, “He’s been a big part of KC’s defense and is now done. Brutal blow.”

Omenihu’s injury will force some shuffling around on the defensive line that is already missing Derrick Nnadi due to injury. Omenihu was signed last offseason by the Chiefs after spending two seasons with the 49ers. He missed the first six games of the 2023 season due to suspension following a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

The veteran lineman made an immediate impact once he was activated to play for Kansas City. He finished the regular season with seven sacks and two forced fumbles while contributing a sack in Sunday’s victory before leaving with the injury.
