The Houston Texans and New York Jets don’t meet one another very often; sometimes it is every three years, other times it could be the very next season as part of the NFL’s same place finisher formula.

The two sides will face one another with 2-8 records Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

The Jets lead the season series against Houston with a 5-3 record. So far, the series history has ebbs and flows: the Jets started out with a five-game winning streak, and the Texans have been on a three-game winning streak since 2012.

Can the Texans make it four in a row with the 2021 matchup?

Texans WR coach Robert Prince tells story of when he knew Matt Schaub would succeed in the NFL

Houston Texans WR coach Robert Prince coached Matt Schaub with the Atlanta Falcons and saw signs he would be a good player even back then.

Houston Texans receivers coach Robert Prince used to be on the Atlanta Falcons coaching staff under Jim L. Mora from 2004-06. In that span, Prince got to see the origin story for future Texans Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Schaub.

Prince, who says he still loves Matt Schaub, shared a story about the former 2004 third-round pick from Virginia when he visited with Texans Radio play-by-play Marc Vandermeer and sideline reporter John Harris.

“What a great learner,” Prince said. “I date myself. I used to have to fax the game plan to the guys Tuesday night. And then, so, Wednesday morning when they come in during the quarterback meeting, you could say, ‘Hey, Schauby, how we running Z-drive this week?’

“And he would go, ‘Here we’re going to go double Z-short or we’re also going to run it out of trips.’ He could tell you either way. You could ask him, ‘Hey, what plays are we running out of trips right, Z-short’ or whatever, and he could just rolodex it in his head. Just a smart guy.”

In Schaub’s rookie year, the Falcons played the Minnesota Vikings in the second preseason game, and it offered the young signal caller a chance to display his ability to process the game.

“There was also a clip where he said, ‘Hey, listen, this play, we run this play, you get two-man, understand, you got to be your own checkdown and you have to take off running,'” said Prince.

When Schaub saw the two-man, according to Prince, the quarterback took off.

“I said, ‘That guy is going to be a good player one day,'” Prince said.

Schaub did have a productive career for the Texans from 2007-13, earning two Pro Bowl selections in 2009 and 2012. In 2009, Schaub won the NFL passing title as the Texans earned their first winning season in franchise history.

Falcons sign quarterback AJ McCarron to one-year deal

When the Falcons passed on Ohio State’s Justin Fields for Florida tight end Kyle Pitts on day one of the 2021 NFL draft, it was clear the team was going all in with Matt Ryan for another year at least.

When the Falcons passed on Ohio State’s Justin Fields for Florida tight end Kyle Pitts on day one of the 2021 NFL draft, it was clear the team was going all in with Matt Ryan for another year at the very least.

Despite there still being some decent quarterback prospects available as round two is set to begin, Atlanta agreed to terms with free agent AJ McCarron on Friday on a one-year deal to replace Matt Schaub as Ryan’s backup.

McCarron, a fifth-round pick by the Bengals in 2014, was once a sought after backup after playing well in relief of starter Andy Dalton in 2015. That would be about the extent of McCarron’s NFL career, though, as he would only go on to start one game in the following five seasons with the Bengals, Raiders and Texans.

Appearing in 17 games (four starts), the 30-year-old veteran has thrown for 1,173 yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions and a career passer rating of 86.7.

Former Texans QB Matt Schaub explains why Andre Johnson should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Former Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub outlined why he believes Andre Johnson should make the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Former Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson is eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.

The Texans’ former No. 3 overall pick from Miami had a productive and exemplary career with Houston, earning seven Pro Bowls, three first-team All-Pro selections, leading the NFL in catches twice, and also leading the league in receiving yards twice. Johnson is also the “Mr. Texan” of the franchise as the organization’s charter member of the Ring of Honor.

Although Johnson caught 1,062 passes for 14,185 yards and 70 touchdowns in his career, he faces stiff competition as the league expanded its rules to accommodate for a heavier emphasis on the passing game.

Nevertheless, former Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who was Johnson’s teammate from 2007-13, knows that his former teammate’s work ethic was unquestioned, and that will earn him consideration as a first-ballot inductee.

“The thing obviously most people won’t know because they’re not between the fences when we’re at practice and into the offseason and everything is Andre’s work ethic is second to none,” Schaub told “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] on April 23. “And I’ve been around a lot of good players, a lot of solid type players, top at their positions, and no one works as hard as he does.

“No one was willing to put in the time, stay after, ‘Hey, Dre, let’s get in a few more throws.’ ‘Hey, absolutely.’ Most guys say, ‘No, I’m good.’ He would be wanting to. He would be like, ‘Let’s get that route two more times from both sides of the field.’ He would want to do more. He wanted to be there working in May and OTAs.”

Because of how reliable Johnson was as the team’s No. 1 receiver, Schaub was able to count on the 6-3, 229-pound target on Sundays.

“He knows where I’m going to throw it, and you know where he’s going to be and how he’s going to get there,” said Schaub. “So, that’s just something that the outside world never saw because obviously closed practices, you don’t see those things.

“But that is the type of guy Andre Johnson is and was, and I think that in itself, along with the numbers and the production and what he meant to the Texans organization and the NFL for all his years, shoot, he’s first ballot in my book.”

Schaub was a beneficiary of Johnson’s playmaking. The former Atlanta Falcons 2004 third-round pick earned two two Pro Bowl selections and won the NFL passing title in 2009.

Matt Schaub says QB isn’t the most ‘pressing issue’ for the Texans

Former Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub says that the QB position is not one of need for his former club in the 2021 NFL draft.

The Houston Texans enter the 2021 NFL draft with eight draft picks, but they don’t get to kickoff the fun until day two in Round 3 withe 67th overall pick.

With a roster full of question marks and holes, including quarterback, it would seem that getting a young signal caller to ostensibly replace Deshaun Watson would be the most glaring need.

However, former Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who was with the club from 2007-13, believes the Texans have already fixed quarterback in free agency and need to move on to other positions.

“When you bring in a guy like Tyrod Taylor, who’s played a lot in this league, whatever happens that’s a guy who can go on the field and produce and win football games,” Schaub told Sports Radio 610’s “Payne & Pendergast” on April 23. “So I don’t think that necessarily quarterback is the No. 1 pressing issue when you look at the Texans.”

The way that Schaub, a former 2004 Atlanta Falcons third-round pick, sees the situation, Houston needs to use their complement of mid to late-round selections to bolster the depth of their roster.

Said Schaub: “That’s how you accumulate talent that can play special teams, that can do multiple things for your football team. They don’t cost a ton of money, you can develop them and you can have solid starters in those rounds. You’ve got to be able to hit on the picks and find guys that work and fit what you’re trying to do with your system, whether it’s on offense on defense.”

With over 70 roster transactions made since new general manager Nick Caserio took the job on Jan. 5, the Texans have reworked their roster to add veteran depth. If the Texans eschew the quarterback position in the draft, it will be another part of Caserio’s rebuild to get Houston in a position to take a quarterback in the 2022 offseason.

A letter to Matt Schaub, the Houston Texans’ 1st successful franchise quarterback

Matt Schaub is retiring from the NFL. The Pro Bowler did a great job helping the Houston Texans transition from expansion team to AFC contender.

On Jan. 4, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank announced that Matt Schaub would be retiring, officially hanging up the cleats after an eventful 16 seasons. One tweet from Adam Schefter evoked similar feelings of seeing a high school sweetheart post on Facebook. Suddenly, for many Houston fans, it didn’t feel as if seven years had passed since No. 8 suited up for the Texans.

You took over the starting quarterback job in 2007, during a time when the Texans had never sniffed better than third place in the AFC South since their 2002 inception. If Schaub was an ex, then Schaub was the ex who showed Houston what they deserved. You taught Houston what love was, during an average 9-7 campaign (so close to the postseason) where Schaub led the NFL with 4,770 passing yards. A franchise-record that would stand until just two days ago, when Deshaun Watson wrapped up his first passing title.

You would man the backfield with undrafted, breakout running back Arian Foster, and throw bombs to Andre Johnson. Suddenly, the fledgling Houston franchise had one of the most legitimate offensive trios in the league.

You taught the Texans to believe in relationships, piloting the team to their first playoff appearance in 2011. Although T.J. Yates ended up starting in the playoffs after an unfortunate broken foot, Houston saw the postseason and found postseason success for the first time. There’s no AFC South Title or memorable J.J. Watt interception.

You taught the young franchise the highs-and-lows that comes with relationships. A 12-4 campaign in 2012 that left Houston fans feeling like legitimate contenders was followed-up by a devastating 2-14 season. We watched Richard Sherman and other defensive backs ultimately destroy what had been a beautiful legacy in Houston. The four consecutive games with a pick-six streak will not soon be broken nor forgotten.

You left your separate way for the OaklandRaiders , Houston turned towards new head coach Bill O’Brien, top selection Jadeveon Clowney, and a pedestrian era of quarterback play, exemplified by Brian Hoyer, Brock Osweiler, and Tom Savage.

Of course, now Houston has met “the one” and things are different now. Houston sports fans have moved on, just as you did. 2021 seems all but certain that Watson breaks your franchise record for passing touchdowns and passing yardage.

Thank you for everything, Matt. Thanks for helping to pull the Houston Texans out of the AFC cellar and into something respectable to cheer for, something memorable. Sorry it couldn’t end here with hoisting a Lombardi Trophy.

8 best games Matt Schaub played for the Houston Texans

Matt Schaub is retiring from the NFL. Here are eight of his best games with the Houston Texans.

Matt Schaub is retiring from the NFL, according to Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

Although Schaub played for the Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens in addition to the Falcons and Houston Texans, he is best remembered for his time as the franchise quarterback for the Texans. Here are eight games Schaub played at his best for Houston.

Falcons QB Matt Schaub retires after 16 NFL seasons

On Monday, during an end-of-the-season press conference, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank told reporters that backup QB Matt Schaub, a 16-year NFL veteran, has officially retired.

On Monday, during an end-of-the-season press conference, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank told reporters that backup QB Matt Schaub has officially retired.

Schaub’s 16-year NFL career is pretty impressive in totality. While younger fans will probably always think of him as Matt Ryan’s backup, Schaub was once known as the talented backup to Michael Vick.

After playing well in relief of Vick, the Houston Texans traded for Schaub in 2007, where he was a starter for seven seasons. For his career, Schaub has spent time with the Falcons, Texans, Ravens, and Raiders. He’s played in 155 games with 93 starts, throwing for 25,467 passing yards, 136 touchdowns, 91 interceptions, and a passer rating of 89.5.

Schaub’s departure leaves an opening for a backup quarterback in Atlanta, which Kurt Benkert is the most likely candidate to fill after signing a futures contract on Monday.

Texans QB Deshaun Watson can match a Matt Schaub record, bury another against the Titans

Quarterback Deshaun Watson has a chance against the Tennessee Titans to match a Houston Texans record Matt Schaub’s and eclipse another.

The Kansas City Chiefs will rest quarterback Patrick Mahomes and start backup Chad Henne as they finish out the season against the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday.

Shouldn’t someone at Chiefs Wire write that up? What does that have to do with the Houston Texans?

Because Mahomes is sitting, it means his passing yards for the season are locked at 4,740. Entering Week 17, it is the most in the NFL.

Second-most passing yards in the NFL belong to Deshaun Watson at 4,458. If he can get 283 passing yards against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, he will pass Mahomes for the passing title. The last Texans quarterback to win the passing title was Matt Schaub in 2009 with 4,770. That is one record that Watson can match.

The Schaub record that Watson could eclipse against the Titans at 3:25 p.m. CT at NRG Stadium is most passing yards in a single season in Texans history. Watson would need 313 to set the record.

The three-time Pro Bowler has produced a 300-yard game in five of his last six ballgames. Watson also threw for 335 and four touchdowns against the Titans in Week 6, a 42-36 overtime loss. All of his production was in regulation, not benefiting from the overtime period at all.

The possibility is there. The Titans will be giving more of an effort than the Chiefs as Tennessee has yet to officially lock up a playoff spot. A win will be very significant for their cause as they seek to win the AFC South for the first time since 2008 and qualify for the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2007-08.

6 Matt Schaub Texans records Deshaun Watson broke or tied against the Bengals

Against the Cincinnati Bengals, Deshaun Watson matched or broke more than a few Houston Texans records set by Matt Schaub.

Deshaun Watson passed Matt Schaub for the most touchdown passes in a single season in Houston Texans history. However, did you know there were other marks of Schaub’s that Watson either passed or matched? Here is a look at the other annals.
