Alvin Kamara wins Florida sport fishing tournament

Alvin Kamara took some time off between Saints offseason workouts to get out on the water and reel in a tournament-winning sailfish:

Props to Alvin Kamara for making the most of his offseason. The New Orleans Saints running back headlined “The Catch” sport fishing tournament in Florida last week, teaming up with Miami Dolphins star Raheem Mostert to win the whole thing. They competed with other NFL players including Kamara’s former Saints teammates Trey Hendrickson and Jameis Winston.

One of the highlights of the fishing rodeo came when Kamara and two of his teammates hooked three sailfish at the same time. Kamara described it as “Chaos. Organized chaos … It was great. Lot of moving parts, but I think we did it effortlessly. Raheem was on there. He was fighting for his life. I was fighting for my life for a second. I got mine in first. We had to give Raheem some moral support.”

It was a fun time for all. With offseason training sessions ramping up as the summer approaches, it’s good to see veterans like Kamara making time to enjoy themselves before locking in for months of hard work.

New Browns quarterback Jameis Winston hilariously interviews a fish

Does Winston have a second career in television waiting after he retires?

When the Cleveland Browns added veteran backup quarterback Jameis Winston this offseason, we knew there would be some funny moments to document. That started over the weekend after a video of Winston interviewing fish caught on a fishing boat was posted to social media.

Winston is seen on a fishing boat asking the fish questions about flopping around and whether the two fish are related. Videos like this show why teammates love to be around a fun, easygoing individual like Winston.

Winston brings great stability to the backup quarterback position, but his leadership and impact in the locker room are also huge. Now, the Browns turn their attention to the 2024 NFL draft, which kicks off in just a couple of days.

Will the Browns take advantage of the incredibly deep wide receiver and offensive tackle classes in a few days? Or will they shock some of us and add to an already-stacked defensive line?

Browns: Jameis Winston to wear no. 5 in Cleveland

Winston will throw it back to his college days

The new backup quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, Jameis Winston, has chosen his number heading into the 2024 season.

With the number 2 taken by wide receiver Amari Cooper and 3 taken by Jerry Jeudy, the two numbers Winston has historically worn throughout his NFL career, the former first overall pick has opted to wear number 5 for the Browns.

This is a throwback to his collegiate career, as Winston wore 5 during his time with the Florida State Seminoles where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2013. This number was previously worn by linebacker Anthony Walker Jr., who is now with the Miami Dolphins after three seasons in Cleveland.

The newest members are slowly beginning to choose their new numbers, and Winston is just the latest. You can find the rest of the pack who have chosen numbers for the Browns here.

Browns QB Jameis Winston joined Theo Von on This Past Weekend podcast

Newly signed Cleveland Browns QB Jameis Winston joined Theo Von on his podcast This Past Weekend.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston went on comedian Theo Von’s podcast. The two traded funny tales about life and football on “This Past Weekend”. Theo Von is a comedian who started his career on MTV.

The newly signed quarterback seemed eager to be part of the organization. Winston showed a wide smile whenever he spoke of the team. Winston shared a funny anecdote of seeing snow when he signed with the Browns in early March. Winston called his wife to share his excitement about playing in the snow. However, his wife was not thrilled with the late spring snow flurry and missed the weather of the Gulf Coast.

Winston and Von didn’t spend much time talking about the ins and outs of the sport, focusing more on life. Winston spoke about staying inspired and motivated as a backup quarterback after losing a franchise job. Von mentioned that Winston’s example of determination mirrored Baker Mayfield’s career arc. Winston agreed and was extremely complementary of the former Browns quarterback.

Winston shared what he learned from Drew Brees and how eager he is to work with Deshaun Watson. Winston ended the interview by offering his thoughts on recent social media trends. The pair of jokesters narrated a video of a monkey gang war in Thailand. Theo Von’s This Past Weekend episode with Jameis Winston can be watched here.

WATCH: New Browns QB Jameis Winston enjoys first day in Berea

There’s a new quarterback in town and he’s happy to be here

After a season in which the team needed to use five different quarterbacks, the Cleveland Browns made a point early on to pay top dollar for a quality backup. The Browns guaranteed veteran Jameis Winston $4 million with a chance to double that in incentives.

You would be hard-pressed to find many better backups in the league, and you definitely won’t find any as entertaining as Winston. The new quarterback was in Berea this week to sign his contract with Cleveland, and the video the team released made it look like he was having a great time visiting.

Winston made a point to ask everyone he talked to what their name was and shake their hands. While out on the field talking to the grounds crew, with snow on the ground, Winston seemed to be taking it all in, and he said, “Thank you, Lord,” at that moment. The offseason continues, and the team will be back on the field before we know it.

Jameis Winston thanks New Orleans for embracing him, says goodbye to Saints fans

Jameis Winston said goodbye to Saints fans in a last look back before signing with the Browns, thanking New Orleans for embracing him:

Jameis Winston formally put pen to paper on his new contract with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, but before doing that he made time to thank New Orleans Saints fans for embracing him during his four years with the team.

Winston shared a highlight reel of his favorite memories and touchdown passes in a Saints uniform on social media, along with a long goodbye message expressing his gratitude for everything he experienced in New Orleans. It’s a classy tribute to a memorable stretch of his NFL career.

“Trust and believe that y’all haven’t seen the last of Jaboo,” Winston said at the end of his letter, again thanking fans in the community for their support.

He’ll be back sooner than you think: Winston’s new Browns team is scheduled to visit the Saints for a home game at the Caesars Superdome in the fall. Depending on when that game kicks off and how far along Deshaun Watson is in recovering from surgery on his throwing shoulder, it just might be Winston making the start against his former team.

Saints to release Jameis Winston, Michael Thomas in procedural moves Wednesday

As was expected, the Saints will release Jameis Winston and Michael Thomas in procedural moves on Wednesday. Here’s what it means for the salary cap:

We knew this was coming, but now it’s confirmed, and there’s no going back. The New Orleans Saints will be releasing quarterback Jameis Winston and wide receiver Michael Thomas on Wednesday with post-June 1 designations, per Over The Cap’s Jason Fitzgerald, making both of them unrestricted free agents. A number of other players around the league are being let go with the same designation, including Odell Beckham Jr.

It’s unclear whether Thomas was given permission to begin speaking with other teams prior to being released, like Winston, but that’s a reasonable assumption. In Winston’s case, he already knows where he’ll be playing football in 2024: the Cleveland Browns. Winston has agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth up to $8.7 million. He’ll be backing up Deshaun Watson who is still recovering from season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder in 2023.

Teams are only allowed to designate two releases as post-June 1 cuts each offseason, which is done for accounting purposes to help manage the salary cap. Here are the remaining salary cap hits the Saints will carry in 2024 and 2025 after moving on from both players:

  • 2024: $15.69 million in total. $11.1 million (for Thomas) and $4.59 million (for Winston). This is about 6.1% of the salary cap
  • 2025: $16.54 million in total. $9.18 million (for Thomas) and $7.36 million (for Winston). This is about 5.9% of an estimated $280 million salary cap

It’s frustrating to lose so much salary cap space for players no longer on the roster, but that’s the cost of doing business sometimes. And things will get a little easier for the Saints on June 2, at which point they will get some cap relief. They’ll receive a $2.42 million cap credit for both players’ base salaries coming off the books, which can go towards signing their rookie draft class.

We’ll see what’s next for both of them, and for the Saints. Players come and go but the NFL’s calendar keeps moving on.

Jameis Winston comments on his decision to join the Browns

Jameis Winston commented on his decision to join the Browns, saying he sees Cleveland as a great opportunity:

Why is Jameis Winston planning to sign with the Cleveland Browns for 2024 if he had his hopes set on competing for a starting quarterback job? The New Orleans Saints free agent shared his thought process after news broke of his impending departure, and he sees Cleveland as a great opportunity to help a team reach the Super Bowl while getting chances to play with a starter on the mend.

Deshaun Watson is coming off of a season-ending injury to his throwing shoulder, and he hasn’t met expectations after the Browns made a historic investment to acquire him. Winston sees this as a good place to be a supporter, and, if needed, fill in should Watson miss more time.

“Yes, I still envision myself as a starter, however the Lord has also called me to lead by impacting and increasing the men who are around me,” Winston told CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson. “Having the opportunity to work with Deshaun and help him be the best he can possibly be, is my main mission. Now, if Deshaun has to heal up for whatever reason, and I have to take a few games off of him, I’m going to be ready to do that; but I have to fulfill God’s purpose first before my own heart’s desire. Because ultimately I desire to win some Super Bowls, and this roster that Cleveland got, looks like they can do it.”

The Saints went 5-2 with Winston starting under Sean Payton back in 2021, but back-to-back injuries and poor play-calling from Pete Carmichael caused Winston’s performance to nosedive. He’s thrown more interceptions (8) than touchdowns (6) in limited appearances over the last two seasons.

But, as he said, the Browns present a good opportunity. Watson missed 11 games last year recovering from shoulder surgery. He’s thrown more interceptions (9) than Winston over the last two seasons, and there are high expectations for him to deliver on what the Browns promised when they traded so many draft picks for him and guaranteed his entire contract.

Something to keep in mind: the Browns will visit the Saints at the Caesars Superdome during the 2024 season. There’s a chance it could be Winston, not Watson, under center when the time comes.

Jameis Winston speaks after agreeing to terms with the Browns

The backup quarterback has spoken for the first time since agreeing to terms with the Browns

After agreeing to terms with the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Jameis Winston has released a statement through insider Josina Anderson:

“Yes, I still envision myself as a starter, however the Lord has also called me to lead by impacting and increasing the men who are around me. Having the opportunity to work with Deshaun (Watson) and help him be the best he can possibly be, is my main mission.

Winston is ready to get to work with the Browns, and now the Browns have some added security in case Watson goes down with an injury again next season. Welcome to Cleveland, Jameis!

Chris Olave may be going back to his college jersey number

With the loss of Jameis Winston to the Cleveland Browns, Chris Olave has floated the thought of changing back to his jersey number:

The offseason is in full swing, and with that, the New Orleans Saints are reportedly going to be losing Jameis Winston to the Cleveland Browns. It’s an opportunity for wide receiver Chriis Olave to return to his old college jersey number.

In his first two seasons at Ohio State, Olave wore No. 17 as his teammate J.K. Dobbins was using  No. 2; however, Olave would snap it up in his junior and senior years. Then he had to move on to No. 12 in the NFL with Jameis Winston having already claimed it. However, with Winston reportedly gone, that frees up Olave to return to his preferred number.

Olave responded to Alontae Taylor, who wears No. 1, on Twitter when Taylor asked if he wanted to rep the “1 & 2 combo” and his brother Josh Olave would also send out a post about the potential number change:

If this number change were to go into effect, Olave would be the first wide receiver to wear it for the Saints. There have only been six others to wear No. 2 for New Orleans, all of whom were kickers or quarterbacks:

  • K Chip Lohmiller: 1995
  • QB Aaron Brooks: 2000-2005
  • K Olindo Mare: 2007
  • K John Kasay: 2011
  • K Zach Hocker: 2015
  • QB Jameis Winston: 2020-2023
