WATCH: Eagles’ RB Will Shipley put his dual-threat abilities on display with 7-yard TD catch

Philadelphia rookie running back Will Shipley was dynamic during Eagles first drive of the preseason

Will Shipley was drafted with the idea that he’d bring a dynamic, dual-threat ability to the Eagles’ offense. During the first drive of the preseason, Shipley made the case to be a huge part of the offense in 2024.

On the Eagles’ second drive, in place of Kenneth Gainwell, Shipley had seven carries for 23 yards rushing and one catch for a 7-yard touchdown.

Philadelphia backup quarterback Kenny Pickett was 8 of 11 for 59 yards and the one touchdown pass before Shipley’s touchdown.

Shipley finished the 2023 season with 827 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He also added 31 receptions for 244 yards and two more scores.

After months of waiting, and stories about Jalen Hurts and head coach Nick Sirianni, the Eagles returned to the NovaCare Complex, for their first training camp practice of 2024.

Here are highlights from Day 1 of action.

Eagles updated 90-man roster arranged by uniform number ahead of training camp

We’re looking at the Philadelphia Eagles updated 90-man roster by uniform number ahead of Tuesday’s report date for training camp

The Eagles are just 12 away from being back on the field for the start of one of the most critical training camps in franchise history.

After signing seven undrafted free agents following the draft, Philadelphia has a full roster, including Laekin Vakalahi, who’ll be exempt from a roster spot as the team’s representative in the International Pathway Program.

After the team placed offensive tackle Le’Raven Clark on injured reserve, it released tight end Noah Togiai and signed cornerback Shon Stephens. Philadelphia now has a roster space for one player ahead of the July 23 report date for rookies and veterans.

With things about to ramp up, here’s an updated 90-player roster for the Eagles.

Eagles land high on a list of NFL teams that improved the most during 2024 NFL Draft

PFF listed four teams that improved the most during the 2024 NFL draft and the Philadelphia Eagles landed at the top of the list

The Eagles collapsed after starting the 2023 season 10-1, losing six of their final seven games, including the 32-9 beatdown from the Buccaneers in the NFC wild-card matchup.

That loss set the course for both coordinators’ departures, along with the news that Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce would be retiring from the NFL.

After adding critical pieces in free agency, Philadelphia improved the most in last April’s NFL draft, adding two elite cornerbacks, two athletic linebackers, and an underrated running back. PFF recently looked at which teams improved the most or the least during the draft, and the Eagles led the list of the most improved teams.

It seems to be an annual tradition that the Eagles end up with the league’s best draft class. If they aren’t the best this year, they are at least in the argument again. At the forefront are two potentially elite talents who will hope to improve a cornerback room that ranked 31st in coverage grade in 2023.

Mitchell’s ball production vaulted him into elite status among FBS cornerbacks. Perhaps more frightening for opposing offenses is that he actually dropped eight interceptions over the past two seasons, twice as many as any other cornerback in the nation. Mitchell has all of the ability to be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

Of course, Philadelphia wasn’t done there with their secondary. Iowa’s Cooper DeJean, the eighth-ranked player on PFF’s big board, fell to the second round and the Eagles traded up to snatch an incredible value.

The addition of edge defender Jalyx Hunt, a converted safety, posted a 90.2 pass-rush grade for FCS-level Houston Christian last season.

He’ll be in the mix for a situational pass-rush role.

Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was listed as a steal in the fifth round while running back Will Shipley and wide receivers Ainias Smith and Johnny Wilson add elite athleticism and versatility.

Eagles sign CB Quinyon Mitchell to 4-year rookie deal

The Philadelphia Eagles now have all nine 2024 NFL draft picks under contract after signing first round pick Quinyon Mitchell to a 4 year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles now have all nine 2024 NFL draft picks under contract after signing first-round pick Quinyon Mitchell to a four-year deal on the final day of the team’s offseason program and mandatory minicamp.

Mitchell became the first cornerback drafted in the first round by the Eagles since 2002 after the Toledo product became the first back-to-back Associated Press All-American in program history. Mitchell was a third-team All-American in 2022 and a second-team All-American in 2023.

Mitchell will compete with Kelee Ringo and Isaiah Rodgers for the starting cornerback spot opposite Darius Slay.

Philadelphia has one practice left before breaking until the late July training camp, and the Eagles are implementing a new offensive and defensive system.

Wednesday was Day 2 of the Eagles’ mandatory minicamp, and a familiar face was back at the NovaCare Complex, as Fletcher Cox appeared amid his retirement adjustment.

There are battles for the cornerback spot opposite Darius Slay and at middle linebacker, where Nakobe Dean will work to hold off Zack Baum alongside Devin White.

With the second day completed, we’re looking at takeaways and observations from the session.

It’s only an early preview, but Quinyon Mitchell, Kelee Ringo, and Isaiah Rodgers are set to have an intense battle for the cornerback spot opposite Darius Slay.

Don’t look now, but Ross could easily land Philadelphia’s third or fourth wide receiver spot. The speedy former first-round pick took first-team snaps on Wednesday and has been active during two days of practice.

Devin White appears to be the only lock as a starter, while Nakobe Dean and Zack Baun will continue to battle for the inside linebacker job.

The future Hall of Famer appeared at the NovaCare Complex in street clothes for the first time since retiring.

With Landon Dickerson absent and Trevor Keegan injured, Mekhi Becton logged first-team snaps at left guard.

Kellen Moore is installing a new offensive system, and Wednesday presents some frustrations for Jalen Hurts and company.

The former Georgia running back has fresh legs and is starting to emerge as a training camp dark horse to watch in the running back competition.

Eagles sign RB Will Shipley to his rookie contract

The Philadelphia Eagles signed former Clemson running back Will Shipley to his rookie deal

The Eagles signed three NFL draft picks on Monday, including former Clemson running back Will Shipley, to his standard four-year deal.

Philadelphia selected Shipley in the fourth round after a trade saw them move back four spots and acquire a 2025 fifth-round pick.

During his final season at Clemson, Shipley became the first Power 5 player since Christian McCaffrey (2014-16) to have 2,500+ rushing yards, 500+ receiving yards, and 900+ kickoff return yards in a three-season span.

That triple threat versatility will transition to the Eagles, where Shipley could carve out several roles.
