Value is an integral part of the draft process. Understanding the board is vital to judging how teams maximized value during the draft.

Establishing actual “value” on NFL draft prospects is incredibly difficult, with all 32 NFL teams having different schemes, cultures, and ideas of what elite talent looks like.

Arif Hasan of Wide Left Football creates the go-to consensus board, ranking the top 300 players in the draft class based on 101 big boards from draft analysts. As Hasan noted, “the consensus of these experts does a better predictive job than individual experts.”

Eagles select FSU WR Johnny Wilson with pick No. 185 overall in 2024 NFL draft

The Philadelphia Eagles selected Florida State wide receiver Johnny Wilson with pick No 185 in the 2024 NFL Draft

The Eagles added more size, versatility, and length to the wide receiver and tight end room after selecting Johnny Wilson with pick No. 185 in the sixth round.

A big, physical wide receiver the size of Harold Carmichael or Alshon Jeffery, Wilson averaged over 20 yards per catch in 2022 after transferring from Arizona State.

Wilson logged 41 receptions for 617 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games as a senior in 2023, playing alongside Keon Coleman, while his best statistical season came in 2022 when he hauled in 43 passes for 897 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

2024 NFL Draft: Florida State WR Johnny Wilson scouting report

Florida State receiver Johnny Wilson is a giant for his current position. Will NFL teams be able to convince him to switch to tight end?

A four-star recruit out of Calabasas High School in Pacoima, California, Johnny Wilson had offers from Florida State, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, UCLA and Washington on the table. He originally committed to Oregon, and then changed his choice to Arizona State to play under head coach Herm Edwards. He then transferred to Florida State for the 2022 season after everything fell apart for the Sun Devils. In 2023, Wilson caught 41 passes on 70 targets for 617 yards and two touchdowns. Four of those receptions came on passes of 20 or more air yards for 131 yards.

The interesting question about Wilson at the NFL level is whether he can be convinced to be a tight end. Based on his media session at the combine, it’ll be a tough go.

“If you go look at the Louisville game, the tape speaks for itself,” he told me. “I feel like every week, I showed what I can do. Just look at the Clemson game; they had an elite defense, but I was able to create separation and make some plays against them.”

PLUSES

Wilson’s measurables (6′ 6⅜”, 231, 84½” wingspan) are all 97th to 99th percentile for receivers since 1999. He uses all of that to make himself a consistent contested catch winner with height and size, but also subtle pushoffs and the ability to box cornerbacks out from the line of scrimmage.

— Wilson isn’t the twitchiest receiver in short areas, but he’s better moving into the angles of his routes than you might expect with this many moving parts. Can turn sharply into slants, comebacks, and curls.

— Has decent acceleration in a straight line, though he’s not a third-level burner.

— Can beat press coverage with good foot-feints and crossovers from the line of scrimmage.

MINUSES

— For a guy this size, you’d certainly want to see a wider catch radius. Too many misses when the ball isn’t thrown in his area.

— Had five drops last season, most of which were timing-related.

— Needs to catch the ball away from his body to take better advantage of his ridiculous frame.

— Blocking is iffy at best, which you don’t want to see from a guy this huge. He’s more adept at using that physicality to gain separation than he is a blocker with intent.

— Not quite the YAC monster you might expect.

Maybe teams can convince Wilson to believe in a WR/TE hybrid role where he can win as both an X-Iso and a Y-Iso player. There are things he needs to clean up before he’ll be able to fulfill his athletic potential, but I’d be interested in thinking outside the box a bit in this instance. He brings a lot of fascinating possibilities to the right offense.

Huge WR prospect Johnny Wilson met Bills at 2024 NFL combine

Huge WR prospect Johnny Wilson met #Bills at 2024 NFL combine:

The Buffalo Bills might have their eye on bringing in both talent and size at the wide receiver position this offseason, potentially during the 2024 NFL draft.

At the recent combine, Florida State’s Johnny Wilson said he met with the Bills during the event.

Wilson is a massive 6-foot-7 target, an extremely rare trait. That size gives him a catch radius larger than most which he uses to his advantage.

But as one could imagine, that comes with some concern in terms of finding separation, which is highlighted by The Draft Network. It appears Wilson might be an option for Buffalo on Day 2 of the 2024 NFL draft if Gabe Davis departs during free agency, which seems likely after his semi-goodbye message he posted to social media. Pro Football Focus currently has Wilson as the No. 76 player on their draft big board.

Wilson’s best season saw him put up 43 catches for 897 yards and five touchdowns in 2022. Some also consider Wilson a potential tight end prospect instead of a receiver, but that remains to be seen.

Wilson discussing the Bills can be found in the WUFO clip below, along with a series of his college highlights:

INDIANAPOLIS — Unless you are somehow able to gain access to one of the rooms in which NFL teams meet with draft prospects during the week of the scouting combine, there’s no way to know what’s really discussed. One thing that is almost always happens is a tape-watching expedition in which the NFL people will have play examples dialed up that hopefully show what the prospects can do.

Here at Touchdown Wire, we do not possess the required juice to crash those rooms, but we are able to ask these prospects during their combine media sessions which plays from their college careers best typify their potential.

We’ve already done this with five quarterbacks, six tight ends and seven cornerbacks here at the combine, and now, it’s time to get into the favorite plays of nine receiver prospects of all shapes, sizes, and talents.

The full lineup:

  • Washington’s Jalen McMillan and Ja’Lynn Polk
  • Alabama’s Jermaine Burton
  • Tulane’s Jha’Quan Jackson
  • Florida State’s Johnny Wilson
  • Pitt’s Bub Means
  • Michigan’s Roman Wilson
  • South Carolina’s Xavier Legette
  • Texas’ Jordan Whittington

Johnny Wilson wants everyone to know he’s a wide receiver, not a tight end

2024 NFL draft prospect Johnny Wilson wants everyone to know he’s a wide receiver, not a tight end, despite his impressive size

Johnny Wilson knew the question was coming. The supersized Florida State wide receiver fielded it right off the bat during his NFL Scouting Combine podium interview.

Have any NFL teams he’s met with asked if he would consider playing tight end?

“No, nobody has,” Wilson responded.

It’s a natural question for the 6-foot-6, 237-pound Wilson. He towered over his podium microphone much like he did opposing DBs during his time at Florida State, and Arizona State before that.

“Just focusing on being the best receiver I can be,” the soft-spoken Wilson stated.

He described his playing style as “physical, fast and deceptive,” with an aspiration of running a 4.4 40-yard dash during his on-field workout. The physical part of that answer has led many to speculate a transition to tight end at the next level, but that’s clearly not something Wilson has interest in pursuing.

2024 NFL draft: Giants address multiple needs in 7-round mock

The New York Giants address multiple needs and still land a QB in the first 7-round Giants Wire mock draft of 2024.

The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana gets underway this week and draft prospects will rise or fall depending on how they test.

Before those wild swings occur, those of us at Giants Wire took our first stab at a full 7-round mock draft focusing solely on the New York Giants.

Because our previous Round 1 mock draft was so controversial, we eliminated all trades in this one. That’s obviously not how the actual draft will play out but only allowing a single trade last time was justifiably unrealistic as well.

For this mock draft, we once again used the Pro Football Focus mock draft simulator and left all settings on default. We chose only for the Giants.

Here’s a look at the Giants’ seven-pick haul.

9 takeaways from American team Senior Bowl practice day 1

The American team at the Reese’s Senior Bowl had some standouts at practice. Tyler Forness is in Mobile and gives his biggest takeaways.

The road to the NFL Draft has started as the Reese’s Senior Bowl is underway in Mobile, Alabama this week. Vikings Wire Managing Editor Tyler Forness has boots on the ground in Hancock-Whitney Stadium, home of the South Alabama Jaguars, giving us a first-hand look at the prospects who hope to live out their dreams as NFL players in April.

For some, it’s a foregone conclusion that they will hear their names called as the draft rolls around. For others, they will have to earn that right. Forness will give us his insights as this week of practice goes along and highlight names that fans of all teams, not just the Minnesota Vikings, should keep their eye on.

With that, we turn our attention to the American Team and nine takeaways from their first practice.

10 prospects at the 2024 Senior Bowl who could interest the Jaguars

Which prospect at the 2024 Senior Bowl has the best chance at being a Jaguars draft pick?

Draft season’s kickoff event is this week in Mobile, Ala. where scouts, coaches, and decision-makers from all 32 teams will gather to watch all-stars from across the country.

While the 2024 Senior Bowl is set for Feb. 3, the real action begins Tuesday when the players hit the practice field. That’s where many of the top prospects of the draft class will line up across from each other for one-on-one drills and get work with NFL coaches.

It could also be an opportunity for the Jacksonville Jaguars to fall in love with a player they end up picking in April.

Last year, Oklahoma State defensive lineman Tyler Lacy was among the prospects who participated in the Senior Bowl. About three months later, the Jaguars made him the No. 130 pick of the 2023 NFL draft.

With Senior Bowl week just getting started, here are 10 participants who could catch the Jaguars’ eye:
