Eagles NFL Draft grade: Cooper DeJean, DB, Iowa 40th overall

Eagles NFL Draft grade for trading up and selecting Iowa DB Cooper DeJean

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to improve their secondary by trading up early into the second round to nab Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean with the 40th overall selection.

DeJean projects as an immediate starter in the Philadelphia secondary in whatever role they have imagined for the versatile defensive man. Now paired with fellow rookie Quinyon Mitchell, it will allow DeJean to play mostly inside either as the nickel or at one of the safety spots.

Versatile, quick, and instinctive, DeJean was perhaps the best defensive back in all of college football last year, constantly creating big plays and turnovers in the Iowa secondary. Expect DeJean to make big plays early for the Birds.

Grade: A

Philadelphia Eagles select Iowa DB Cooper DeJean with the 40th overall pick. Grade: A

Iowa DB Cooper DeJean is the perfect multi-position foil for Vic Fangio and the Eagles.

People in and around the NFL won’t shut up these days about “Fangio guys” and “Fangio schemes.” Well, the real Vic Fangio is Philly’s new defensive coordinator, and he has a perfect foil for his concepts in the person of Cooper DeJean, who has legitimate skills at outside corner, slot, and STAR. With Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell as the Eagles’ first-round pick, and Darius Slay as Mitchell’s bookend, I would expect Fangio to use DeJean as his situational “floater,” and play more man than expected as he did in Denver when he had Patrick Surtain II as his primary man in the secondary.

Cooper DeJean was a four-star recruit from OA-BCIG High School, which includes four local towns (Odebolt, Arthur, Battle Creek and Ida Grove) in Odebolt, Iowa. He played quarterback, receiver and defensive back in high school, and he was also quite the basketball player. Iowa was DeJean’s first FBS offer, and that’s where he went.

In 2023, his third season on the field for the Hawkeyes, DeJean was a leader in Iowa’s top-tier defense, allowing 20 catches on 46 targets for 194 yards, 44 yards after the catch, no touchdowns, two interceptions, four pass breakups, and an an opponent passer rating of 37.8 — which means that opposing quarterbacks had as much luck throwing the ball into the dirt as they did targeting him.

Unfortunately, DeJean suffered a lower leg injury in mid-November, which ended his 2023 season early and will prevent him from working out at the combine. But as they say, tape don’t lie, and DeJean’s tape is full of compelling reasons to take him seriously as a first-round cornerback prospect who can shut things down outside and in the slot,

PLUSES

— Opposing offenses kept trying to beat him with comebacks and stop routes in off coverage, and he kept making them look silly with outstanding recovery speed.

— Tremendous in bail coverage where he’ll work back to or though the receiver to take the ball away.

— Expert route-jumper.

— Rarely played press in his 2023 targets, but has most of the skills to match and follow.

— Closes with nasty intentions on screens and swing passes.

— Times his hits to deflect and has no issue whatsoever getting grimy in the run game. Tough guy.

MINUSES

— Might take a second to become a great press cornerback at the NFL level; he’ll get a bit lost at the top of the route stem.

— Tracks the ball as a receiver would and is able to throttle up and down accordingly, but he could be better at keeping his eye on the receiver.

— Hesitates at times to match targets; this may because he played an inordinate amount of off coverage. His NFL coaches should work on DeJean trusting his technique through the rep and not thinking too much.

As good as DeJean was in college, I think there’s some unlocked potential as a press/match DB. Hopefully, he’ll go to an NFL team that just wants him to hunt. I’m not convinced that he’s an automatic safety prospect in the NFL by default.

Eagles select Houston Christian University LB Jalyx Hunt with the No. 94 overall pick

Eagles select Jalyx Hunt with the No. 94 overall pick

Howie Roseman is restocking the Eagles’ defense and landed an under the radar linebacker who started his collegiate career at the safety position.

After making multiple Day 2 trades, Philadelphia selected Houston Christian University Jalyx Hunt with the 94th pick.

A converted safety that transferred to Houston Christian from Cornell, Hunt stands 6-foot-4, 252 pounds, and runs a 4.64 40-yard dash.

With Brandon Graham retiring next off-season, and Josh Sweat a free agent, Hunt gives the Eagles athletic and versatile prospect.

Cooper DeJean selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Draft

Cooper DeJean is carrying on the Iowa Hawkeyes’ NFL pipeline. He has been drafted No. 40 by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The wait is over. Cooper DeJean is an NFL player. The Iowa Hawkeyes’ star defensive back has been selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 40 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

DeJean, one of the best defensive backs to come through the University of Iowa, ascended himself into stardom the last two seasons with the Hawkeyes. He has ultimately turned that stardom and exhilarating play into his dream, becoming an NFL player.

An instant boost to the secondary, DeJean brings versatility, athleticism, and a very high football IQ with him from day one. All of that was on display at Iowa as he was the best player on the field most of the time.

The Eagles are known for being a team with athletic, ball-hawking cornerbacks. DeJean gives them that and then some. With a secondary that needs help and is aging, the Hawkeye gives them an instant boost.

During his collegiate career, Cooper DeJean totaled 120 tackles, 20 pass breakups, and 7 interceptions. He took three of those interceptions back for touchdowns. His game also brings excellent special teams experience. DeJean has All-Pro potential as a punt returner. At Iowa, he averaged 13.1 yards per return with one touchdown.

DeJean was also Iowa’s go-to man on punt coverage when looking to down punts deep in enemy territory. His high football IQ allowed him to constantly be in position to down punts without himself or the ball trickling into the endzone.

Cooper DeJean is the next NFL player in a long line. The Iowa Hawkeyes’ NFL pipeline is alive and well and DeJean looks to be the next star.

Eagles select Cooper DeJean in 2nd round of NFL draft

The Eagles picked cornerback Cooper DeJean in the second round of the NFL draft on Friday night.

The Philadelphia Eagles selected Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean with the 40th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft in Detroit on Friday night.

DeJean (6-1, 203 pounds) emerged as a starting cornerback in his second season at Iowa and earned second-team All-Big Ten recognition after breaking up eight passes and grabbing five interceptions (three of which he returned for touchdowns).

DeJean had a decorated final season in 2023, earning first-team All-American recognition, Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year honors and the Return Specialist of the Year award. He broke up five passes and recorded five interceptions while also returning 21 punts for 241 yards and one score.

Some draft pundits project DeJean to play as a safety in the NFL. Regardless of what his primary position ends up being, DeJean’s positional flexibility should help him win playing time. The 21-year-old prospect has played outside cornerback, slot cornerback and nickel safety. He will also contribute on special teams.

After months of speculation, mock drafts, and expert predictions, the 2024 NFL draft started on Friday. The Chicago Bears selected USC quarterback Caleb Williams as the No. 1 pick. The Washington Commanders selected Jayden Daniels as the No. 2 pick, while the Patriots followed with Drake Maye as the No. 3 pick.

Six quarterbacks went in the first round, while three wide receivers were selected in the top nine picks.

With the Day 2 picks set to begin, we’re tracking every pick in Round 2.

CBS Sports projects day two NFL draft landing spot for Iowa’s Cooper DeJean

CBS Sports shared its day two NFL draft landing spot for Iowa’s Cooper DeJean.

If things work out the way CBS Sports projects, folks in the “City of Brotherly Love” are going to be doing celebratory backflips later on tonight.

CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso released his mock draft for day two of the 2024 NFL draft and he has Iowa’s Cooper DeJean falling all the way to the Philadelphia Eagles at pick No. 53 overall.

Quality players seem to fall into Roseman’s lap, and it happens again with DeJean who can play any secondary position. – Trapasso, CBS Sports.

This would certainly qualify as a sensational player falling into Philly and Roseman’s lap. That Philadelphia draft war room would be jumping for joy.

For DeJean’s financial sakes, let’s hope that he comes off the board before then. If DeJean landed with Philadelphia at pick No. 53, Spotrac projects it as a $7.15 million four-year rookie contract while Over The Cap projects a $7.23 million rookie contract.

The first pick of the second round belongs to the Buffalo Bills. That selection would net a rookie deal of $9.92 million per Spotrac’s projections and a $10.07 million deal per Over The Cap’s projections. Here’s a look at the full second-round contract projections.

Per ESPN, DeJean is atop their list of “best available” players entering the second round of the 2024 NFL draft. Several other Hawkeyes were among ESPN’s best available heading into tonight as well.

DeJean will hopefully make some NFL franchise and fan base very happy by night’s end. The Hawkeye star was a unanimous consensus All-American in his final season with Iowa.

DeJean was also named the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year and Rodgers-Dwight Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year. He was a Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Jim Thorpe Award finalist, too.

The Odebolt, Iowa, product registered 120 tackles, 20 pass breakups, seven interceptions and five tackles for loss over the course of his 30 career games played and 23 starts while at Iowa. DeJean returned three of his interceptions for touchdowns during the 2022 season and had a 70-yard punt return touchdown in the Hawkeyes’ 26-16 win over Michigan State.

The second round of the 2024 NFL draft begins at 6 p.m. on ABC, ESPN and the NFL Network.

Chargers mock draft roundup: Who Los Angeles is projected to take in Rounds 2-3

Analysts project what the Chargers will do with their picks on Day 2.

The Chargers came out of the first round with offensive tackle Joe Alt. After the selection, Los Angeles should have their focus on wide receiver, cornerback and the interior part of the defensive line.

General manager Joe Hortiz will have picks No. 37 and 69 to add more talent to the roster.

With that, here’s a glimpse at who L.A. could add on Friday based on what a few mock drafts are projecting.

CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso

Round 2: WR Keon Coleman, Florida State

Analysis: “Keon Coleman is a young wideout who plays a tick faster than his timed speed and flashes acrobatic catch skill.”

Round 3: LB Junior Colson, Michigan

NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein

Round 2: DT Braden Fiske, Florida State

Analysis: “Fiske is all gas and no brakes on every single snap, which is exactly what Jim Harbaugh is looking for.”

Round 3: WR Malachi Corley, Western Kentucky

Pro Football Focus’ John Kosko & Trevor Sikkema

Round 2: DT Jer’Zhan Newton, Illinois

Analysis: “The Chargers need to improve almost everywhere on defense. They find a versatile defensive lineman in Newton. He has some physical limitations due to his size and lack of natural flexibility, but his hand usage, pass-rush tools and block-shedding ability allow him to be very productive in any alignment from three-technique to five-technique.”

Round 3: RB Jonathon Brooks, Texas

“Brooks is an ideal blend of size, speed, strength and agility. Though limited in snap totals, he has good vision in both gap and zone run schemes. If he can get back to form following his torn ACL, he has all the goods to be a starting running back in the NFL.”

NBC Sports’ Eric Froton

Round 2: CB Cooper DeJean, Iowa

Analysis: “A tweener who many scouts profile as a slot corner/safety in addition to having game-breaking punt return prowess, DeJean allowed a 38% catch rate with just 44 YAC on 20 receptions this season. The Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year and member of the famed Bruce Feldman “Freaks List”, DeJean could be the Chargers’ new version of Eric Weddle.”

Round 3: WR Roman Wilson, Michigan

ESPN’s Steve Muench

Round 2: WR Ladd McConkey

Analysis: “The Chargers address their most pressing need at receiver after losing Mike Williams and Keenan Allen this offseason, snagging the No. 31 overall player on my board.”

Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame

Round 2: OL Jackson Powers-Johnson, Oregon

Round 3: TE Ja’Tavion Sanders, Texas

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler

Round 2: LB Junior Colson, Michigan

Round 3: RB Blake Corum, Michigan

Analysis: “Given the Chargers’ need for another running back and Jim Harbaugh’s affinity for Corum, this match feels almost too obvious.”

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar

Round 2: DT Jer’Zhan Newton, Illinois

24 potential Falcons targets on Day 2 of 2024 NFL draft

Looking at 24 potential draft targets for the Falcons on Day 2 (Rounds 2-3) of the 2024 NFL draft

The Atlanta Falcons weren’t messing around when they said they wouldn’t reach for needs in the 2024 NFL draft. To the surprise of nearly everyone, the Falcons selected Washington quarterback Michael Penix on Thursday night.

While fans were hoping for an edge rusher, like Dallas Turner or Laiatu Latu, the first defensive player (Latu) didn’t come off the board until pick No. 15. There are still some quality defensive players on the board going into Day 2, and a few big-time offensive playmakers as well.

The Falcons have one second-round pick (No. 43) and two third-round picks (74 and 79) thanks to the Calvin Ridley trade. Here are 24 potential targets for the Falcons on Day 2 of the draft:
