Eagles updated 76-player roster as 2024 offseason program gets underway

We’re looking at the Philadelphia Eagles updated 76 man roster as the offseason workout program gets underway

The Eagles are back at the NovaCare Complex as the offseason program begins for 76 select veterans and second-year players.

The nine-week training program has three phases: one mandatory minicamp for the entire roster and one rookie minicamp for each group.

Phase One consists of the first two weeks of the program, with activities limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two consists of the next three weeks of the program with on-field workouts, which may include individual or group instruction.

Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program, during which teams may conduct ten days of organized team practice activities, or “OTAs.”

No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are allowed.

The Eagles are changing their offseason program, including adding a mandatory minicamp for the first time under Nick Sirianni. They will have 7 OTAs (May 20, May 22-23, May 28, May 30-31) and three days of mandatory minicamp (June 4-6). In 2022 and 2023, they had six total OTAs.

With the workouts and on-field training underway, we’re looking at Philadelphia’s updated 76-player roster ahead of next week’s NFL draft.

Every move the Eagles have made so far this offseason

We’re 16 days away from the start of the 2024 NFL draft’s first round, and the Eagles along with 31 other teams have started preparing for a fast approaching training camp and regular season.

Philadelphia has been dilligent in retooling the coaching staff and a roster that’ll be without Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce for the first time since 2010.

The Eagles have been active this offseason, adding Saquon Barkley, Bryce Huff and Kenny Pickett among others, while Haason Reddick was traded, and a handful of other free agents departed.

With the final draft preparation underway, we’re looking at every move Philadelphia has made this off-season.

Ex-Lions OLB Julian Okwara signs with the Eagles

OLB Julian Okwara signs with the Philadelphia Eagles, ending his four seasons in Detroit

The days of the Detroit Lions featuring the Okwara brothers along the defensive line are officially over. Julian Okwara has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Okwara was a third-round pick by the Lions in 2020 and has spent hte first four years of his career in Detroit. He joined older brother Romeo with the Lions but never established himself as more than a part-time player. His most productive season was his second one, with five sacks in 13 games and playing 40 percent of the snaps in 2021. He missed games due to various injuries in all four of his seasons.

Okwara was waived late in the 2023 season but returned to the Lions’ practice squad. Because he was not on an active roster at the end of the season, Okwara was free to sign anywhere.

With Julian now gone, the question for the Lions shifts to whether they will have either Okwara brother back in 2024. Romeo’s contract for 2024 officially voids on Friday.

Eagles sign pass rusher Julian Okwara to a deal

The Philadelphia Eagles announced the signing of outside linebacker Julian Okwara to a deal ahead of the start of NFL free agency

The Eagles added some intriguing depth at the linebacker position, agreeing to a deal with Julian Okwara ahead of NFL free agency.

A pass-rushing outside linebacker, Okwara was waived by the Lions ahead of the NFC title game.

Okwara logged just seven tackles (six solo), including two sacks, in nine games played last season.

Over the past three seasons, the 25-year-old defensive end recorded 29 total tackles, ten tackles for loss, and seven sacks for the Lions’ defense.

The signing looks like a reach for potential; as the third-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, Okwara hasn’t played more than 13 games in a single season, but he has been a regular part of Detroit’s defensive line rotation when able to suit up.

Detroit Lions unrestricted free agents now that the 2023 season is completed

With the 2024 offseason looming, here is the master list of the Detroit Lions unrestricted free agents

The Detroit Lions had an impressive season, coming within one game of a Super Bowl berth despite their loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Looking ahead, the future seems promising for the Lions.

GM Brad Holmes and Coach Dan Campbell are likely already diligently evaluating the roster, identifying areas for improvement to overcome the challenges. From a personal perspective, they should have the trust of the fanbase to execute the necessary moves. As they enter the offseason, the Lions possess $58.6 million in cap space, ranking sixth in the NFL according to Over the Cap. This substantial amount will likely be essential to bolster the roster, especially with only 38 players currently under contract for the upcoming season.

Certain players demonstrated their value this season, earning a return to the roster, while others failed to meet expectations. The decisions on who to retain and who to release will be intriguing. Here’s the comprehensive list of the Lions’ unrestricted free agents.

Lions re-sign Julian Okwara amongst practice squad moves

Okwara was waived when the Lions activated James Houston and comes back after going unclaimed on waivers

Julian Okwara never left Detroit after being waived on Thursday when the team activated James Houston to take his spot on the active roster. Okwara went unclaimed on the waiver wire, and now he’s back with the Lions.

The team re-signed Okwara to the practice squad on Saturday, a day ahead of the postseason matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Detroit also promoted two players from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday afternoon’s game.

For the second week in a row, DT Tyson Alualu and FB Jason Cabinda have been elevated for the game. Both played in the win over the Rams as practice squad elevations.

There is no limit on elevations in the postseason.

Detroit didn’t announce any game status changes from Friday’s injury report, which is a positive development for TE Sam LaPorta and his questionable knee.

Notre Dame Football: 12 Former Golden Domers Remain in NFL Divisional Playoffs

Who do you like to advance to the NFL conference championships?

The NFL Divisional Playoffs are set and 12 former Notre Dame players are moving on to the second round.

Wild Card weekend saw one great game between the Lions and Rams and five other ones that left quite a bit to be desired.

As the NFL playoff field gets cut nearly in half, so do the amount of former Notre Dame players participating in the postseason.  The Irish saw 10 of their 22 former players on playoff teams eliminated this weekend.

So who is left and how did they fare on Wild Card weekend?

Breaking down the Detroit Lions pass rush woes

Breaking down the Detroit Lions pass rush woes over the recent weeks and how it’s ruining the defense

The rest of the football nation witnessed on Thanksgiving something Lions fans know all too well: Detroit’s pass rush is seriously lacking.

The Lions defense did not sack Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love once. Detroit registered just four QB hits on Love’s 32 dropbacks, per the NFL’s official statistics. The lack of pressure and negative play generation showed in the Packers’ 29-22 upset win, a game where Love consistently had time to survey the field and pick apart the Lions’ outmanned secondary.

Unfortunately, the national television audience saw the ongoing status quo from Detroit’s defense. The Lions have registered just two sacks in their last three games, both of which came in the Week 11 win over the Bears. One of those was Aidan Hutchinson’s strip-sack/safety on Chicago’s final offensive play. Alim McNeill had the other on Justin Fields.

Detroit didn’t sack Chargers QB Justin Herbert in the Week 10 win. In that game, Hutchinson hit Herbert thrice and LB Alex Anzalone hit him twice on blitzes, one of which forced an interception. That was the total production on 40 pass attempts by Herbert, who threw for four touchdowns and 323 yards in the Lions’ win.

The game before that was a bright spot. Julian Okwara had one sack in Week 8 (the Lions had a Week 9 bye) against the Raiders, a game where McNeill had two. Linebacker Alex Anzalone also bagged two sacks and safety Tracy Walker added another against sitting duck Jimmy Garoppolo.

Prior to that game, the last sack also came from Okwara in the Week 6 win over the Buccaneers. That was a cleanup sack of Tampa Bay QB Baker Mayfield that produced just a one-yard loss.

Keeping track of all that:

In their last six games, the Lions have nine sacks. Six of those came against the Raiders. Other than McNeill’s three in that span, the line has produced only three other sacks in six weeks. Julian Okwara has two and Hutchinson, who has the highest double-team rate in the NFL in that span per SIS, has one.

It’s the utter lack of any pressure coming from the front four (or five, at times) that has become a major problem for the Lions. And it’s not trending in the right direction as the team efforts a playoff push.

Okwara was a healthy scratch on Thanksgiving. Charles Harris hasn’t touched an opposing QB since Week 4. Romeo Okwara, per PFF, has created one pressure on 28 pass rush reps since Week 6. John Cominsky has five QB pressures in 88 pass rush reps in the last five games; PFF hasn’t credited Cominsky with one QB hit in that span. Josh Paschal got his first two QB hurries since Week 7 on Thanksgiving, a span of 80 snaps.

Outside of blitzing Anzalone and occasionally a safety, the Lions generate next to nothing beyond Hutchinson (3rd amongst EDGEs in pressures) and McNeill (18th among DTs).

Coordinator Aaron Glenn has not been effective in scheming up pressure from the front. How much blame Glenn deserves depends on your perspective of the talent on hand and how much juice can be expected from a sack of lemons.

One thing is clear — the pass rush must improve if the Lions want to make noise in the NFL postseason. Somehow, some way, Glenn and his players have to do better. The Detroit secondary doesn’t have the coverage talent to cover it up, and opposing offenses have figured that out.

Lions inactives for Week 12 vs. Packers: Healthy scratches provide roster clues

With Jonah Jackson the only player out, the Lions made several healthy scratches

The Thanksgiving game in Ford Field features a Lions team that enters the Week 12 contest with just one player ruled out for an injury. In fact, left guard Jonah Jackson (wrist) was the only Detroit player with any injury designation at all.

That means the weekly inactive list is full of healthy scratches. And healthy scratches mean we get a glimpse of the pecking order of the bottom of the Lions roster.

We got an early idea when the Lions elevated DT Quinton Bohanna and OL Michael Schofield from the practice squad. After adding them into the mix, the Lions made the following players inactive:

LG Jonah Jackson (injured)
OLB Julian Okwara
DT Isaiah Buggs
DT Brodric Martin
WR Antoine Green
CB Steven Gilmore
LB Trevor Nowaske

The notable players here are the veterans, Buggs and Okwara. Being inactive while healthy is an indication that they are at the bottom of the depth chart at their positions. With both of them pending free agents, it could very well be seen as a sign that neither is long for Detroit.

Watch: Amon-Ra St. Brown plays off bet by wearing Notre Dame leprechaun costume

St. Brown looks pretty good

It has become an NFL tradition for players to make fun bets with each other when their colleges face off against each other and former USC player [autotag]Amon-Ra St. Brown[/autotag] had to play up as [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] defeated the Trojans last weekend.

St. Brown’s family is used to having Irish gear, as his brother, Equanimeous, played for Notre Dame, but it was a bet between his Detroit Lion teammate and former Irish star [autotag]Julian Okwara[/autotag] where the wide receiver had to pay up.

As you can see below St. Brown went with a full leprechaun outfit to complete the wager and it was quite the look.

Can’t wait to see more of these bets won for the Irish in the future.
