Jaguars sign veteran QB Mike Glennon

The Jags now have the veteran presence they were looking for in their quarterbacks room.

[jwplayer JT8uRGUW]

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran quarterback Mike Glennon the team announced Friday. The move comes after the Jags had interest in Andy Dalton but missed out on him as the veteran signed with the Dallas Cowboys six days ago.

“Mike is entering his eighth season in the NFL and will bring vital experience into our quarterback room and make us a better football team,” said Jags coach Doug Marrone on the team’s official site. “We want to be as strong as possible at every position.”

Glennon, 30, has been a journeyman quarterback since he was drafted out of N.C. State in 2013 (round 3, selection No. 73) by the Tampa Bay Bucs. After spending four seasons there, he spent time with the Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, and Oakland Raiders. With the Raiders, Glennon played under Jon Gruden, brother of Jags coordinator Jay Gruden and was also a part of 2019’s season of “Hard Knocks.”

Glennon will enter his career with the Jags with 22 career starts, a 60.9% completion percentage (488-of-801), 5,163 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and 20 picks. He’ll also be entering his seventh season, making him by far the most experienced quarterback on the Jags’ roster.

Notre Dame in NFL: Raiders Waive DeShone Kizer

The Las Vegas Raiders waived former Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer Tuesday and it made us remember Brian Kelly’s warning to Kizer.

DeShone Kizer went from relative unknown to the top of some NFL Draft charts after his 2015 season at Notre Dame.  2016 proved to be a rough patch for him and Notre Dame both as Kizer and the Irish went just 4-8 after a heartbreaking loss at Texas in Week One.

Kizer ultimately was drafted 52nd overall, a second round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2017.  He started 15 games for the Browns his rookie season and struggled mightily to the tune of an 0-15 record as a starter.

He was then traded from Cleveland to the Green Bay Packers where he saw action in three games in 2018, throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns.

Kizer was claimed off waivers by the Raiders in 2019 but never saw regular season action in the silver and black.  Tuesday saw the Raiders part ways with the former Notre Dame quarterback.

Kizer is only 24 and with the level of play at quarterback in the NFL I’d be surprised if he doesn’t at least pop up again in another training camp.

It probably wouldn’t have made a night and day difference in terms of his NFL career but perhaps a few of those that were so quick to jump on Brian Kelly for daring to suggest Kizer wasn’t yet ready for the NFL back in 2017.

Perhaps Kelly knew something afterall.

Watch: Wild, scary video of ex-Dallas Cowboy RB Darren McFadden’s arrest

TMZ got its hands on the video of former Cowboys and Raiders RB Darren McFadden’s arrest in January.

Another crazy video uncovered by TMZ of a football player getting in trouble with the law.

This time the entertainment juggernaut got its hands on the wild scene and arrrest of former Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden in January.

McFadden was found asleep in his SUV outside a Whataburger fast-food restaurant in McKinney, Tx. Officers tried to wake up the former first-round pick by banging on the SUV and rocking it.

McFadden’s foot slipped and his vehicle hit the restaurant. Officers broke the windows open in a more intense effort to get McFadden to awaken. A fight then ensued between McFadden and the officers. The cops Tased McFadden and pointed a gun at him to stop the fight.

The 31-year-old Razorback was hit with two misdemeanor charges, including a resisting arrest or search infraction, following his arrest 40 miles north of Dallas. McFadden was booked into the Collin County jail and released after posting $2,000 bail.

NFL will not play international games in 2020

The NFL will release their full schedule later this week, but they have officially cancelled all of their international games for 2020.

The NFL is planning to release the preseason and regular season schedules by Friday, May 9, but the schedule will not consist of any international games this year.

“After considerable analysis, we believe the decision to play all our games domestically this season is the right one for our players, our clubs, and all our fans in the US, Mexico and UK,” said NFL Executive Vice President, Chief Strategy & Growth Officer Christopher Halpin in a press release. “We greatly appreciate the support of our governmental and stadium partners in Mexico and the United Kingdom, who all agree with this decision, and we look forward to returning for games in both countries in the 2021 season.”

The NFL has held at least one game abroad every season since 2007, but the global pandemic shifted the league’s priority to safety rather than the financial gain of playing in an international market.

The Seahawks were not confirmed to be playing internationally in 2020, although the Falcons and Cardinals were slated to host games in London and Mexico City, respectively, two opponents Seattle could easily have been scheduled to play abroad.

The Seahawks played abroad in 2018, when they faced the Raiders in London’s Wembley Stadium and won handily by a score of 27-3.

It was their first, and to date only, game outside of the United States.

Jets OT Mekhi Becton will be among NFL’s heaviest players

Jets’ first-round pick Mekhi Becton is currently the second-heaviest player in the NFL after Raiders’ tackle Trent Brown.

Jets’ first-round pick Mekhi Becton is massive.

Not only is he one of the tallest players in the draft at 6-foot-7, but he’s also 364 pounds. If he stays at that weight before the 2020 NFL season, Becton will be the second-heaviest player in the league behind only Oakland Raiders’ offensive tackle Trent Brown.

But there’s more to Becton than his size. He’s also incredibly light on his feet and posted an impressive 5.10 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine.

“A man that size isn’t supposed to be as nimble as he is,” Jets general manager Joe Douglas said after taking Becton. “We’re so excited to add a guy this size and athletic ability. A guy we feel can fortify our front for the long term.”

Becton will likely try to slim down from that size, as he prefers to play at around 350-355 pounds. That would drop him likely to the third-heaviest behind Steelers tackle Zach Banner, who weighed 360 pounds in 2019. Whatever weight Becton enters 2020 with, it won’t be nearly as much as Aaron Gibson, who entered the 2002 season with the Cowboys at 410 pounds.

The Jets will need all of Becton to turn around their bottom-tier offense in 2020 and protect Sam Darnold from the barrage of defenders who were able to take him down in 2019. Becton should have no problem with that huge frame of his on a new offensive line that features a handful of veterans and new free-agent acquisitions.

Former Oklahoma receiver CeeDee Lamb drafted No. 17 overall by the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys just selected Lamb with the No. 17 pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

[jwplayer MY4dAg6e-er0jUifI]

The Dallas Cowboys just selected Lamb with the No. 17 pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Richland, Texas native came to Oklahoma in 2017 as a four-star prospect. Lamb made an immediate impact his freshman season with 807 yards breaking the school’s freshman receiving yards record while hauling in seven touchdowns. Opposite Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown for the 2017 and 2018 seasons the duo were one of the best dual-threats in the nation while catching passes from Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.

In 2019, Lamb led the Sooners in receiving with 62 receptions, 1,327 yards, and 14 touchdowns, good for a Big 12 best in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Lamb finished his career at Oklahoma with plenty of accolades including being named a Consensus All-American in 2019, First Team All-Big 12 in 2019, Second Team All-Big 12 in 2018, and an ESPN Freshman All-American in 2017.

Lamb is the highest-drafted Sooner wideout since former corps mate Marquise Brown in 2019 who was taken No. 25 overall by the Baltimore Ravens.

The Raiders made pick that would’ve made Al Davis proud

Will Henry Ruggs follow in the path of speedy Raiders wideout Darrius Heyward-Bey?

The late Al Davis, who owned the Oakland Raiders, loved speed. The Las Vegas Raiders made a pick that was basically an ode to Davis’ need for speed. The team picked Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs with the 12th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Ruggs came .05 seconds short of setting an NFL combine record for the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.27 seconds.

Ruggs’ production (40 catches 746 yards, 7 TDs) didn’t wow at Alabama, where he was the third receiver on the team’s depth chart. In fact, Jerry Jeudy, the team’s second receiver was also in the 2020 draft. But the Raiders made Ruggs the first receiver selected, surely in large part because of his explosive playmaking abilities. You can’t coach speed.

Here’s what Twitter had to say about the Raiders’ pick.

Will Ruggs follow in the path of speedy wideout Darrius Heyward-Bey? Or will Ruggs help usher the Raiders into an era of success, much like they had when they favored speed in the 70s and 80s?

Lamar Jackson: ‘I’d be happy’ if the Ravens signed WR Antonio Brown

After working out together this offseason, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson would like the team to sign Antonio Brown

[jwplayer lBPjlRuH-ThvAeFxT]

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has been spotted working out with former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown this offseason. And if Jackson had his way, he’d like to continue throwing to him come Week 1 as well.

“I’d be happy if they signed him,” Jackson said in a pre-draft video conference. “He done showed up each and every year he was with the Steelers in the past. But that’s not my decision.”

Fans have been drooling over the potential pairing since video showed up on social media of Brown working out with his cousin and Ravens wide receiver Marquise Brown. But when Jackson was videotaped throwing passes to Brown this offseason, the talk reached a fervor.

Though Brown has currently unresolved issues that could make his return to the NFL daunting, it’s easy to get excited when thinking about the possibilities.

Jackson is fresh off an MVP season that has him as the new cover player for ‘Madden 21,‘ throwing a league-high 36 touchdown passes and shattering all types of records. Brown, at his best, is arguably the greatest wide receiver in the league currently. Discounting last season and his rookie year, Brown has averaged 103 receptions for 1,380 yards and 9 receiving touchdowns per season over eight years in the NFL. Even though Baltimore has revamped their wide receiver corps over the last two seasons, there’s little doubt a focused Brown could take them to the next level.

But for all the excitement fans have had about Brown joining the Ravens, he’s had a troubled year.

Brown is looking for his fourth team since last offseason, being traded by the Steelers to the Oakland Raiders. However, antics involving a cryotherapy injury and Brown refusing to play without a specific and discontinued helmet marked a quick end to his tenure with the Raiders, causing his release before the season started. Brown quickly signed with the New England Patriots but that lasted just one game before a lawsuit filed by his former trainer alleging sexual assault saw his release from there as well. Since hitting free agency, Brown has continued to have trouble staying out of the spotlight for negative reasons, getting in an expletive-filled confrontation with police in front of his house and being arrested on burglary and battery charges against a truck driver.

With such an extensive list of issues against him, Brown is currently under investigation by the NFL and is undoubtedly looking at a suspension if a team is brave enough to sign him.

Where are they now: Alec Ingold

Catching up with the former Badger fullback, and looking at where his NFL career has taken him

[lawrence-newsletter]The newest edition of the “where are they now” series, a series of articles looking at former Badger football standouts and checking in on where they are in the NFL or elsewhere, turns its focus to fullback Alec Ingold.

The Wisconsin native came to Madison by way of Bay Port High School (Wis.) where he was a dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2015. After fielding offers as a quarterback and eventually committing to Northern Illinois as a signal caller, the 6-1 athlete eventually ended up re-committing to the Badgers without a designated position.

At Wisconsin, Paul Chryst and the coaching staff started Ingold out as a linebacker, before making the permanent switch to fullback early in his Badger career. As a fullback, the former Bay Port standout had a career-high seven total touchdowns in his 2018 senior season. Ingold finished his Badger career with 21 total touchdowns in 51 total games. The former quarterback was invited to the 2019 NFL combine, but went undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft.

When the Raiders called in May of 2019, the former Badger was close to accepting a sales job from the tech giant Oracle. Instead, he was finally able to live out his NFL dream. Ingold signed with the Raiders on May 2nd, 2019 and ended up appearing in all 16 games for Oakland. The partnership with Coach Jon Gruden and the silver and black proved to be the perfect one. As a rookie this past season, the fullback made key blocks for fellow rookie running back Josh Jacobs, and even found the end zone himself through the air in week 10 against the Chargers:

This offseason, in the midst of a global pandemic, Ingold along with fellow Raider rookies, has found a creative way to help feed people in need. With a $20 donation to the organization linked in the tweet, fans can be entered for a chance to meet Ingold and fellow Raiders Foster Moreau, Josh Jacobs, and Hunter Renfrow.

There were few undrafted rookie free agent signings who made a bigger impact this season than Ingold. The Wisconsin native finished with six receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown through the air, as well as 10 carries for 17 yards on the ground that came mostly in 3rd-and-1 or 4th-and-1 situations. Even more impressive were the monster blocks he delivered, an aspect of his game that Badger fans remember well from Ingold’s days in Madison. Expect the former Badger to be a major part of the now Las Vegas Raiders’ future in their new home.
