Texas will travel to Lubbock on Saturday to begin Big 12 conference play. Here are three concerns going into the Texas Tech matchup:

Texas will travel to Lubbock on Saturday to begin Big 12 conference play. Over the past decade, the Longhorns won all five of their road games against Texas Tech. Hopefully, the 2020s continue the wins over the Red Raiders.

Going into the game, Texas will have a couple of questions to answer. The Longhorns looked better against UTEP than Texas Tech did against Houston Baptist. However, moving into a conference play will be a different story than nonconference play.

We know Texas’ offense is going to have a solid day. Chris Ash’s defense and how well they hold up will become the main concern. Alan Bowman led an efficient attack against the Huskies and the Longhorns will need to slow Matt Well’s offense down.

Here are three concerns going into the Texas Tech matchup:

In his last game against Tech in Lubbock, he led them to a last second win. Alan Bowman will be making his debut in the series. Due to season ending injuries the last two years, Bowman has yet to play against Texas.

On the subject of running backs, Patrick and Cami discuss who will start for the Longhorns. Keatontay Ingram is listed as the starter but as seen in the opener it was Roschon Johnson who took the first snaps. Head coach Tom Herman has stated that they will spread the snaps equally among the three backs, including freshman Bijan Robinson. For Tech, their running back was arrested on Monday afternoon. What we learned from Texas Tech vs Houston Baptist

Texas opens Big 12 conference play against Texas Tech on Saturday. Here is what we learned from their season opener against Houston Baptist:

Big 12 conference play is finally here and to open, Texas will be traveling to Lubbock to face off against Texas Tech. After the one nonconference matchup designated by the conference, both the Longhorns and Red Raiders are 1-0.

Matt Well’s squad like Texas played on Sept. 12 and had a bye week. Texas Tech will be playing in its second home game of the year after hosting Houston Baptist. Favored by nearly 40 points according to BetMGM, the Red Raiders needed a two-point conversion stop to earn a 35-33 victory.

With a full two weeks to learn from Texas Tech’s matchup, Tom Herman is going to realize he needs to attack offensively. The Huskies themselves, an FCS program, had an incredible day against the Red Raider’s defense.

Here is what we learned from Texas Tech’s season opener against Houston Baptist:

Texas Football opponent preview: Texas Tech Red Raiders

The first conference opponent for the Texas Longhorns will be the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Both teams are coming off wins in their opening game of the year. They just did it in two different manners. While the Longhorns’ game was never close, the Red Raiders held on for dear life for a two-point win at home against FCS opponent Houston Baptist.

Last year, the Red Raiders started 2-0 before their season began to come unraveled. Wins over Montana State and UTEP by a combined 87-13 led many to believe the Matt Wells era was getting off to a hot start after relieving Kliff Kingsbury of his duties.

A 28-14 loss to Arizona in Week 3 was not the only bad part of the third game. Starting quarterback Alan Bowman was sidelined for the season following that game. The Red Raiders won only two more games following the loss of their quarterback.

Tech beat Oklahoma State at home and West Virginia on the road. It would play some Big 12 teams close but lost every one possession game. Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State and TCU won by a combined 11 points. Many felt if Alan Bowman had been healthy, Tech could have won at least a couple of those contests.

Texas Longhorns vs Texas Tech: QB Tale of the Tape

The Texas Longhorns travel to play Texas Tech next Saturday. We look at the quarterbacks in our tale of the tape.

One week from Saturday the Texas Longhorns will travel to Lubbock for the Big 12 opener against Texas Tech at Jones AT&T Stadium. For the Longhorns this will their earliest trip to Lubbock since the 2010 season. That year they won 24-14. It was a sloppy game from quarterback Garrett Gilbert who threw three interceptions in that game but the Longhorns never trailed.

This will be the first time that Alan Bowman will face Texas as he has been injured the last two times these teams faced off. That is the biggest concern for Red Raider fans, can Bowman play an entire season? He has shown promise in two seasons but staying healthy and consistent is what Texas Tech needs from their passer. They struggled last weekend against Houston Baptist, but not necessarily Bowman’s fault. The defense was as effective as a wet paper bag.

On the other hand you have the Big 12’s leading passer (touchdowns) in Sam Ehlinger. He is the opposite in that he doesn’t miss football games. A true gamer with an immense competitive drive. Last week against UTEP, he got off to a hot start from the first play on. Set school records for passing yards and touchdowns in the first half. Had he played the second half like he did the first, he would have obliterated any school records for one game.

Bowman will likely test this Texas defense with the amount of times they will throw the ball. On the other side, Ehlinger is looking at this defense and salivating. If Texas continues with their own version of the ‘air raid’ attack, Matt Wells defense could be in for a long game next Saturday.

Quarterback Sam Ehlinger named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm watchlist

Senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger joins two other Big 12 passers on Johnny Unitas watchlist. Looking to become the second Longhorn to win it.

Stop me if you have heard this before but Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger has been added to a preseason watch list. Yes, indeed after being named to the the Maxwell, Davey O’Brien, Manning and others you can add the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watchlist.

Texas Tech’s Alan Bowman and Baylor’s Charlie Brewer join Ehlinger as the only Big 12 passers to make the watch list. In a press release from Texas Athletics a list of the accolades for Ehlinger over the past two seasons show how good he has been.

Ehlinger, an Austin native, has started all 27 games for UT over the past two seasons and leads all active FBS quarterbacks in completions (571), attempts (879), passing yards (6,955), total offense (8,100) and total touchdowns (80) since the start of the 2018 season. He also ranks second among active FBS quarterbacks in touchdown passes (57) and fifth in completion percentage (65.0) during that stretch. Ehlinger is the only FBS player to account for at least 50 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns over the last two seasons.

The award was first presented in 1987 with Don McPherson of Syracuse being the first recipient. In the 33 year history, five times a Big 12 quarterback has been given the award. Colt McCoy is the only Texas quarterback to earn this honor. Last season Joe Burrow walked away with the honor of being associated with a legendary quarterback in Johnny Unitas.

In 2017 Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State was the winner of the award under the tutelage of offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. As Ehlinger enters his senior season that kicks off September 12th against UTEP, expectations are high. The senior quarterback hopes to pick up the accolades as the looks to dethrone the Sooners as top dog in the conference.

A mixture of younger and older signal callers have taken over, ranging from a redshirt freshman like Spencer Rattler, all the way to juniors and seniors such as Brock Purdy and Charlie Brewer.

Getting ripped to shreds in the passing game last season, the Longhorns ranked ninth in the Big 12 last season. Even with an improved defense, Texas is going to have some challenges ahead facing these talented quarterbacks.
