Cardinals cut RB Keaontay Ingram, DL Ben Stille, practice squad O-lineman

The 2022 sixth-round pick saw his spot in the rotation get taken by Emari Demercado and Michael Carter.

The Arizona Cardinals announced three cuts on Tuesday, the team’s day off. After being deactivated on Sunday and not playing a single offensive snap the previous week, second-year running back Keaontay Ingram was released.

With rookie Emari Demercado returning from a toe injury, the Cardinals had three healthy backs to go with James Conner and Michael Carter.

Ingram struggled this season when given snaps. In 35 rushing attempts, he gained only 74 yards (2.1 yards per attempt).

Ingram started the season as Conner’s primary backup.

The former sixth-round pick out of USC averaged 2.2 yards per carry with one touchdown on 64 attempts in two seasons with the Cardinals.

In addition to cutting Ingram, the Cardinals also cut defensive lineman Ben Stille from the active roster and offensive lineman Austen Pleasants from the practice squad.

Stille’s release suggests perhaps an expected return to the lineup of defensive lineman Kevin Strong, who missed the game on Sunday against the Rams with a knee injury. Another move on the defensive line will likely occur in the days to come.

Stille, if he clears waivers, will likely be re-signed to the practice squad, where he has been for part of the season.

Cardinals players to watch in Week 7 vs. Seahawks

Here are the individual players to watch in Week 7 for the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals play on Sunday on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. They hope to snap their three-game losing streak and pick up their first road win of the year.

In this game, our eyes will be on a few players in particular.

Who and why?

We explain it below.

James Conner’s injury puts spotlight on young RBs

Keaontay Ingram and Emari Demercado will get the first opportunity to shoulder the load of the running game with James Conner out.

The Arizona Cardinals have a new challenge offensively. They have had to adjust to a new quarterback with Josh Dobbs. Now they have lost running back James Conner for at least the next four weeks, as he was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

That puts two young backs in focus as the guys to hopefully produce.

Keaontay Ingram, in his second NFL season, and undrafted rookie Emari Demercado now sit atop the Cardinals’ depth chart and they will likely be the first guys given the opportunity to handle the load.

Ingram has missed the last two games with a neck injury but should play this week. He looked great in training camp.

Demercado isn’t special at any particular thing but can do everything pretty well. He scored his first NFL touchdown last week and, after some very short gains after Conner got hurt, has runs of eight, nine and 11 yards, the final one getting into the end zone.

They have veterans Damien Williams and Corey Clement on the practice squad and added Tony Jones this week on a waiver claim, but Clement is mostly a special teams player, Williams is 31 years old and Jones has a career 2.8-yard per-carry average.

So if the Cardinals can maintain a productive running game, it will depend on the young guys. It is a big opportunity for them.

Keaontay Ingram showed why he could be Cardinals’ No. 2 RB

In his first action of the preseason, he was one of the Cardinals’ bright spots in their loss to the Chiefs.

The Arizona Cardinals were quiet all offseason at the running back position. They brought back Corey Clement and added Emari Demercado as an undrafted rookie.

Expecting to rely more on the running back and with the history of missing games that starting running back James Conner has, it made sense to believe that they would add a veteran.

But maybe that was because they believe in second-year back Keaontay Ingram.

Ingram missed the preseason opener and much of training camp with some injury the team never disclosed (Pro Football Focus indicated once that it was an abdomen injury, but that is the only place I saw anything). but he returned to action and was a bright spot in the team’s 38-10 preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.

Ingram rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, he caught two passes for 20 yards and returned a kick for 13 yards.

His five-yard touchdown run was a display of effort and strength.

“I thought he looked good,” head coach Jonathan Gannon said after the game. “(He) made some runs and made a couple of guys miss. That touchdown run was pretty special so it was good to have him back in there. That was his first exposure in a live game. I know he was lathered up pretty good, he had a good attitude, he did a good job. And the O-Line did a good when they were in there with him. They opened up some holes and created some displacement.”

Ingram showed burst, strength and the ability to make guys miss.

He made plays in the passing game.

After last week in the preseason opener looked like they were missing something in the running game, if Ingram can keep healthy and look how he looked against the Chiefs, the Cardinals might be just fine with a running back duo of him and Conner for the regular season.

5 2022 drafts picks for Cardinals with uncertain future with team

These 5 Cardinals draft picks from last year will have extra to prove with a new coaching staff and front office, in addition to new competition.

The Arizona Cardinals have a new front office and coaching staff. That means they were not the ones who necessarily liked the players the team drafted in 2022.

Some of their draft picks seem destined to bigger roles in 2023 — tight end Trey McBride and linebackers Cameron Thomas and Myjai Sanders. However, the other players have uncertain futures for the coming season.

They are players to watch in training camp and the preseason coming up later this month and next month.

2023 Cardinals offseason needs: Running back

We take a look at the running back position and determine the level of need the Cardinals have for the offseason.

With a new general manager and coaching staff, the Arizona Cardinals have a lot of work to do with the roster coming off a 4-13 season.

Virtually every position group has some level of need to be addressed.

Over the next few days in this offseason series, we will take a look at each position group, what the offseason outlook is, what questions they have what level of need is there — critical, urgent or secondary.

Rookie RB Keaontay Ingram likely to make NFL debut vs. Seahawks

At least one of the Cardinals’ running backs is expected to be out this week, opening the door for the sixth-round rookie.

Rookie running back Keaontay Ingram has been inactive for every game this season for the Arizona Cardinals. That is likely to change in Week 6 when the Cardinals travel to take on the Seattle Seahawks.

Because of injuries in the running back room, Ingram, drafted this year by the Cardinals in the sixth round, will likely make his NFL debut.

James Conner injured his ribs, Darrel Williams had a knee injury and Jonathan Ward injured his hamstring on Sunday. All three exited the game.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury indicated that Ward has a pulled hamstring, which essentially rules him out for the game on Sunday.

The status of the other two is unknown.

The Cardinals have had four running backs active every game so far this season. At minimum, Ingram should be active to play special teams.

Kingsbury is confident in Ingram.

“He’s very talented,” he told reporters Monday. “That’s why we kept five. You don’t see that a lot, but he was really impressive in the preseason and has been impressive on the scout team. Now it’s just about making sure he understands the game plan and executing at a high level if he gets called upon, but his natural gifts are pretty special we think.”

The Seahawks allowed more than 200 rushing yards in Week 5 to the New Orleans Saints in a 39-32 loss.

He will surely be excited for his opportunity and fans will be, too.
