Head coach: Matt Wells (4-8)

Offensive coordinator: David Yost

Defensive coordinator: Keith Patterson

Matt Wells began his second year in Lubbock with a win. A 35-33 victory in front of a small crown at Jones AT&T Stadium. He came over from his alma mater, Utah State, where Wells finished 44-34 overall. In his final season at Utah State, the team finished 10-2, but he did not coach in the bowl game due to leaving for Lubbock. His bowl record overall is 2-2.

Both David Yost and Keith Patterson followed Wells to Lubbock to run the offense and defense, respectively. In his two seasons as the Aggies offensive coordinator, Yost had a top 20 passing attack and top 35 rushing attack. The 2018 semifinalist for the Broyles Award likes his offense to be uptempo. Last season, his offense ran more plays per game than they did under Kingsbury.

Last season the Red Raiders were 11th in the country in total offense per game. They also finished fifth in number of players per game. Wake Forest was the only Power Five school ahead of them in the rankings. Their running game was 83rd in the nation. Their scoring wasn’t what fans had been accustomed to, with 30.5 points per game, which was 53rd in the nation.

The Red Raiders run a 3-4 base defense under Patterson. He joined the Aggies staff in 2018 as the co-defensive coordinator and became the defensive coordinator for Tech in 2019. Last season, his total defense finished as the fourth-worst unit in FBS. The defense gave up 30.3 points per game which was 84th in FBS. They need to be vastly improved in 2020 for Tech to have any shot at winning more than four games.
