Georgia freshman quarterback limited by injury through spring practice

Freshman quarterback Ryan Puglisi has been hampered by a knee injury through practice

Kirby Smart spoke to the media on Tuesday and gave an update on the health status of one quarterback vying for the backup job. Freshman quarterback Ryan Puglisi has been hampered by a non-serious knee injury through practice, somewhat limiting his ability to fully participate thus far.

Smart clarified Puglisi’s status, saying “Ryan is dealing with a little bit of a knee injury. It’s not a significant injury. He’s had it before, since high school. It has been bothering him. He’s been able to throw. He hasn’t been able to go out and be mobile and run.”

It is good news for the Bulldogs that Puglisi has been able to throw thus far, though Smart did confirm he has “had to miss out on some reps.”

Puglisi was recruited as a four-star quarterback from Avon, Connecticut. He has been praised not only for his talent but also for his competitive nature, showcased during the recruitment process in his decision to stay with Georgia through the entire process despite Dylan Raiola’s initial commitment to play for the Bulldogs.

Puglisi is competing with Gunner Stockton to be Georgia’s backup quarterback behind starter Carson Beck.

Antonio Pierce calls GM Tom Telesco ‘magician’ in terms of drafting quarterback

Is Tom Telesco really the ‘magician’ in terms of drafting quarterback that Antonio Pierce thinks he is?

Regardless of how you feel about the hiring of Tom Telesco, for the Raiders, the former Chargers is seen as the right guy at the right time.

First and foremost, Mark Davis opted not to go with any first time GM’s because he had already decided to go with first time head coach Antonio Pierce. In this situation, Pierce was to be surrounded by experienced people to allow Pierce to focus on motivating his players.

But there’s also the issue with the Raiders heading into the draft with a need at QB for the first time in a decade. That’s an area where they like Telesco’s experience.

“I got Tom Telesco in there. Got the magician. Figure out what he’s got up his sleeve,” Pierce told NFL media’s Carol Smith. “He’s done it for a long time. I got a lot of trust in him. I think he’s seen it wherever he’s been. Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, becomes a GM with the Chargers, Philip Rivers, Justin Herbert. So he knows something about quarterbacks. So I’m going to let him figure it out.”

Yes, Telesco has “seen” great quarterback play. Though he can’t really be credited much for it.

The Chargers landed franchise QB Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick after Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa had been selected. Making for one of the more no-brainer picks in the draft as the Chargers were moving on from Philip Rivers and there was a significant dropoff at QB in the draft after that. They were taking whichever of the three QB’s were on the board.

Andrew Luck’s selection carried even less suspense. Telesco had just been promoted to VP of football ops from director of player personnel. The Colts had the number one overall pick and Luck was the obvious choice at first overall.

Peyton Manning was also a number one overall pick and he was selected the same year Telesco joined the team as an area scout. So, needless to say Telesco was not influencing anything with that pick. Philip Rivers was already a veteran on the Chargers when Telesco joined those team.

So, at best Telesco may be a good judge of the kind of intangibles great quarterbacks should possess because he shared a building with several in his career. He’s been lucky enough to have only experienced one full season without one of those four quarterbacks behind center. And that was the notorious “Suck for Luck” season.

Pierce and the Raiders are banking on Telesco’s up-close-and-personal experience with these QB’s translating to the Raiders finding their own answer at quarterback in this year’s draft.

The Raiders currently sit at 13 overall. Most expect the top four quarterbacks — Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and JJ McCarthy — to be off the board by then, with a dropoff at the position after that.

Next up would be Michael Penix and Bo Nix, but both are considered late first round or early second round prospects.

This means for the first time in his front office career Telesco’s QB magic skills will be truly put to the test.

Atlanta Falcons bring Kirk Cousins to the NFC South

Kirk Cousins is joining the NFC South as an Atlanta Falcon. The starting quarterbacks in the division are now set.

Kirk Cousins is coming to Atlanta. The Atlanta Falcons have an agreement in principle with the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback on a four-year contract valued at $180 million, averaging out to $45 million year with $100 million guaranteed, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Cousins departing Minnesota was a bubbling offseason story, and Atlanta was always the predicted alternate destination given the similar offense that new play caller Zac Robinson is installing.

Now the quarterbacks in the NFC South are set:

  • Atlanta Falcons: Kirk Cousins
  • Carolina Panthers: Bryce Young
  • New Orleans Saints: Derek Carr
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Baker Mayfield

Raheem Morris has said he wouldn’t be the head coach right now if quarterback play had been better in 2023, and Cousins provides a clear upgrade over every recent option the Falcons have had at quarterback. Their weapons entered the league with promise but are largely unaccomplished. How much will Kirk Cousins improve the Falcons passing attack will be one of their biggest storylines of 2024.

Saints picked as a surprise team to trade into the 2024 draft’s top-10

Bleacher Report picked the Saints as a team who could trade up into the top-10, targeting a quarterback. Here’s two reasons that won’t happen:

Mickey Loomis is known for being aggressive, but could this be the year he goes for broke? The New Orleans Saints were listed as one of five surprise teams who could trade into the 2024 NFL draft’s top 10 picks by Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton.

Why would they do that? Moton says it should a move for a quarterback to develop as Derek Carr’s replacement. New Orleans has been aggressive, but it’s doubtful they will be that aggressive. Restarting with a rookie quarterback would help the team avoid their annual salary cap gymnastics. Moton writes:

In all likelihood, Carr will get another opportunity to take the Saints to the playoffs, but New Orleans shouldn’t rule out a move into a top-10 spot for a quarterback with more potential. The Saints have the 14th overall pick, so they wouldn’t have to make a massive leap to get the third- or fourth-best signal-caller in the draft.

New Orleans can sit its rookie signal-caller for the 2024 campaign and then reassess its thoughts on Carr next offseason. In 2025, the club can opt to find a trade partner that appeals to Carr or cut him in a transition to an upstart signal-caller.

Sitting a rookie for a year would allow the Saints to grab their quarterback of the future while also keeping Carr as the starter this season. But there are two major issues with this theory for New Orleans. The Saints are committed to Carr, not stuck with him. Carr may not be the future at the position in three or four years, but Dennis Allen will give him every opportunity to earn that opportunity.

The other issue is the Saints aren’t necessarily in a position to trade up for a player who won’t impact their 2024 season. Allen could lose his job if the Saints are unsuccessful this season and again fall short of the playoffs. Their first-round pick should be spent on an immediate-impact player. If that quarterback can’t at least show promise as a rookie, Allen may never see the benefit of drafting them.

Saints assistant Jordan Traylor has a new assignment in 2024

New Orleans Saints assistant coach Jordan Traylor has a new assignment in 2024: working with the quarterbacks

The New Orleans Saints are hiring within their own staff as Jordan Traylor has been promoted to the assistant quarterbacks coach, replacing D.J. Williams, per 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

Traylor played college football at Texas A&M as a quarterback, and has been with New Orleans for five years now. He spent two years as a scouting assistant before joining the coaching staff as a defensive assistant. He switched to offense last season and will now move up to his new role for 2024. It’s clear that he has made a name for himself in New Orleans as he will stick around among a lot of offensive turnover on the staff.

Traylor will work closely with recently hired quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko. It’s a positive that the Saints were able to find at least some continuity within the offensive staff as Janocko remains an up-and-coming coach at just 36 years old. Janocko could leave for a promotion of his own if Derek Carr makes rapid progress in the fall. Developing in-house replacements like Traylor is a key to sustaining success.

Add Coach Prime and Colorado to Those Trying to Poach Notre Dame Quarterback

Hands off, Buffs!

The biggest name to date in Notre Dame’s star-studded 2025 recruiting class is quarterback [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag].  Knight committed to the Irish back in September and has been a vocal leader in helping recruit more talent to Notre Dame’s 2025 class.

Despite this, other programs are trying to swoop in and get Knight to flip his commitment.  The latest to do so is none other than the Colorado Buffaloes and head coach Deion Sanders.

Colorado doesn’t yet have a quarterback commitment in the class.  They were in on top quarterback prospect Bryce Underwood, but he ultimately committed to LSU.

This past Friday, Knight announced on social media that Colorado had extended him an offer:

Knight is rated as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports composite.  The same outlet ranks him as the 62nd overall player in the class and fifth overall quarterback.

That specific Notre Dame football history can’t be spoken without discussing the names of some of the best to ever drop back to pass in blue and gold.

Joe Montana, Brady Quinn, Rick Mirer.

Jarious Jackson, Joe Theismann, Tony Rice.

And the list goes on and on.

We break down the top 20 passers in Notre Dame football history. A group that includes a Heisman Trophy winner and plenty of eventual NFL draft picks.

Saints request interview with Rams QB coach Zac Robinson

The ongoing Saints offensive coordinator search added another name: the team requested an interview with Rams QB coach Zac Robinson

Here’s another name added to the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator search: Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson, who also works as the team’s pass game coordinator. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported that the Saints requested an interview with Robinson for their OC opening.

Robinson, 37, has been with the Rams since 2019 while working with both their quarterbacks and wide receivers, though he’s held his current titles for two years. He was credited for helping the L.A. offense stay afloat during a chaotic 2022 season in which four different quarterbacks started games after an injury sidelined Matthew Stafford.

It’s clear now that the Saints are looking for someone from Sean McVay’s coaching tree to help liven up their offense, which makes sense given the success his system has found around the league. Former Rams offensive line coach Kevin Carberry joined the New Orleans staff last offseason so there’s some familiarity here. We’ll see if anything comes of it.

USC quarterback and likely No. 1 pick Caleb Williams declares for the NFL draft

The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner ends his collegiate career with 10,082 career passing yards, 93 passing touchdowns, 27 rushing touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.

In one of the least shocking announcements of the college football offseason, USC quarterback and 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams announced he would declare for the 2024 NFL Draft on Monday.

“Since I was 10, all I ever wanted to do was play football,” Williams said in the social media announcement. “I’m ready to do whatever it takes.”

The heavy favorite to be both the first quarterback and the first player drafted in April, Williams ends his collegiate career with 10,082 career passing yards, 93 passing touchdowns, 27 rushing touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in just 34 full games of work with the Trojans and Oklahoma.

He became the eighth underclassman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2022, a season that saw him throw for 4,537 yards, score 52 total touchdowns, and throw just five interceptions.

Despite not replicating his Heisman status, he actually increased his completion percentage from 66.6% to 68.6% and his yards per attempt from 9.1 to 9.4 this past season, and the USC offense averaged more points per game in 2023 (41.8) than in 2022 (41.4). However, the nation’s 121st-ranked scoring defense held the Trojans down to 7-5.

Williams and UNC quarterback Drake Maye will be the top names atop NFL draft boards over the coming months.
