In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we travel back to 2016. D’Onta Foreman has a monster game in Lubbock as Texas holds on late.

In this week’s throwback Thursday, Longhorns Wire travels back four years. The Texas Longhorns came into Lubbock with a 4-4 record and 2-3 in conference. In fact both teams had the same record up until this point. The quarterback battle featured Shane Buechele and future Super Bowl and NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes. At the time Mahomes was a junior and it would mark the final time that he would play in this series as he left for the NFL following the season.

Tech opened the game with nine-play drive going 75 yards for the opening score of the game. After Buechele found Jake Oliver for a 52-yard pass, D’Onte Foreman finished off the drive to tie the game up. He wouldn’t be done in this one. In the weirdest play of the game, Texas drove 99 yards for a go ahead score but a fumble prior to crossing the goal line ended up as a 99-yard fumble recovering for a touchdown.

The Longhorns would eventually take the lead prior to halftime 24-23 after a Collin Johnson touchdown reception and a field goal from Trent Domingue with just 0:26 left to go.

The teams traded touchdowns as the second half kicked off and the Longhorns would find themselves ahead 38-30 as they headed to the final quarter of play clinging to an eight-point lead. As the quarter opened, Texas called a run play on third and three from their own 26. That is when Foreman went right up the middle for a 74-yard touchdown to give them the 14 point lead.

A fumble deep in their own territory gave the Red Raiders new life as Da’Leon Ward scored from nine yards out to cut the lead to just 7. A drive late in the fourth quarter for Tech came down to fourth and three. Mahomes found his high school teammate Dylan Cantrell for the conversion. On third and ten from the Texas 20-yard line Mahomes heaved the ball to the endzone but it was Kris Boyd who caught the ball intended for Cameron Batson.

On this day, D’Onta came oh so close to matching Ricky Williams single game record. Foreman ran the ball 33 times for 341 yards and three touchdowns. Buechele threw two touchdown passes to Collin Johnson and Texas held on 45-38 in Lubbock.

Three Vikings who are dark horse starter candidates

Here are three players on the Vikings who could surprise some people and crack the starting lineup in 2020.

This will be a much different Minnesota team than it was last season.

The Vikings will probably have at least two new starters on offense and will probably have at least four on defense.

This has led plenty of people to try and guess which Minnesota players will break through and crack the starting lineup this season.

Defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo, cornerback Mike Hughes and wideout Justin Jefferson are some obvious candidates who could win starting spots.

But what about some people who are less obvious? What about those who may be good enough to move up the depth chart, but aren’t garnering the hype that the aforementioned three have been getting this offseason?

Well, here’s a list of just some of those players who might surprise fans and become starters in 2020:

What would an NFL defense look like comprised of only Texas Longhorns?

A look at an NFL defense comprised of Texas Longhorns. Earl Thomas and Jordan Hicks were bonafide locks but who are the rest?

Some of the best defenders in the NFL hail from the University of Texas. Earl Thomas being one of the bigger names as he was recently named safety of the decade by Pro Football Focus. The lineage of defenders doesn’t begin with Thomas, but it goes all the way back to players such as Tommy Nobis, Tom Landry and more recently Casey Hampton. The series of professional teams comprised of Longhorns continues. Recently we published our list for the offense.

The focus will shift to the defensive side of the ball. After all there is that old adage of defense wins championships. Not necessarily the case in all championship teams but without one your team stands no chance of winning. Top defenders such as Brian Orakpo, Henry Melton and Roy Miller won’t make the list as they have retired from their professional careers but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty to choose from.

Let’s start with the defensive ends of our all Texas Longhorns team.

Texas Longhorns In NFL Wild Card Weekend

A look at which former Texas Longhorns who will play on NFL Wild Card weekend.

Even with the college football season coming to an end this past Tuesday, there are former Texas Longhorns players who still have some football left to play. On Saturday and Sunday there a list of former Longhorns who will be participating in wild card weekend as the playoffs kick off.

Saturday

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans

In the first matchup on Saturday, it will feature the only former Longhorn playing on Saturday. Charles Omenihu will be suiting up for the Texas as they host Buffalo. The former sixth-round draft pick will look to help notch the first postseason victory on the day when they host Buffalo. Omenihu will likely see a lesser role with the return of J.J. Watt for Houston.

Omenihu

13 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles

Jackson Jeffcoat

Jeffcoat is the son of former NFL chamption Jim Jeffcoat. He played on the defense along with Okafor. During his four-year college career from 2010-2013, Jeffcoat recorded 172 total tackles with 26 sacks and five turnovers forced. He was an All-American in 2013 when he was also named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Jeffcoat is currently playing in the Canadian Football League for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The man in the middle of the defense, Ford played in Austin from 2014-2017. During that time he recorded 133 total tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. He also forced three fumbles. Omenihu was named All-Big 12 and Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2018. He is currently a member of the Houston Texans.

Texas Longhorns Team of the Decade: Cornerbacks

While there has been debate over who DBU is, Texas makes a strong case. Diggs and Boyd are two of the bost CBs to ever come out of Texas.

While there has been a long debate over who ‘Defensive Back University’ or DBU is, the Longhorns make a strong case when bringing up these two names at the cornerback position. Both crucial members on their current NFL teams, Quandre Diggs and Kris Boyd are two of the best cornerbacks to come out of Texas.

While they never played on the same field, what Diggs and Boyd do share in common is that they both had two different head coaches during their time in Austin. Diggs was there for the final years of Mack Brown while playing under Charlie Strong for one season. Boyd got two years of Strong and the first two years of Tom Herman.

On the field, Diggs played amazing in his first two seasons, getting All-Big 12 honors and even being named the Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2011. His best season came in 2011, when he had four interceptions, while also being involved in 13 pass breakups. His 11 career interceptions rank him at No. 10 in career interceptions in a Longhorn uniform.

Coming in the season after Diggs was drafted, Boyd found more success under Tom Herman than he did with Charlie Strong. Even though he was not a huge interception machine, Boyd covered No. 1 receivers really well. His final two seasons saw him receiving All-Big 12 honors and got him drafted in the seventh round by the Minnesota Vikings.

Here are your Longhorn cornerbacks on the decade:

Former Longhorn Malik Jefferson waived by Cleveland Browns

Former Texas Longhorns linebacker Malik Jefferson was waived by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday

On Tuesday, former Texas Longhorns linebacker Malik Jefferson was waived by the Cleveland Browns.

Jefferson is in just his second year as a pro. He was drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

With the Browns in 2019, Jefferson only made an appearance in one game, and that game came in week one against the Titans. In that game, Jefferson recorded just one tackle.

Hopefully, we see Malik find a new home soon. After all, he was a third-round pick last year for a reason.

WATCH: Quandre Diggs gets first interception with Seahawks

Watch as Seattle Seahawks defensive back Quandre Diggs gets his first interception with his new team

A few weeks ago, former Texas Longhorn defensive back Quandre Diggs was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Seattle Seahawks. Last night, Diggs saw his first action with Seattle in a clash between the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers went into this Monday Night Football matchup as the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL. The Seahawks were able to stun the 49ers in San Francisco, winning in overtime by a score of 27-24.

About midway through the 3rd quarter, Diggs was able to intercept 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the score being 10-7 in favor of San Francisco. This interception led to a Seahawks touchdown, giving them the lead.

On the night, Diggs was able to tally two tackles, one of which was solo, a pass defense, and this interception.
