Saints waive cornerback Cameron Dantzler from the 53-man roster

The Saints waived cornerback Cameron Dantzler from the 53-man roster after finding better options to round out the depth chart:

The New Orleans Saints are known for always churning the bottom of their roster to find the right combination of players, and here’s another move. Per Monday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire, the Saints waived veteran cornerback Cameron Dantzler Sr., who had been inactive since being signed to the 53-man roster on Nov. 21.

There’s a good chance Dantzler will return to the practice squad if he clears waivers; that’s where he started out with the Saints, having been elevated for two games earlier this year. But there’s a chance they’re ready to move on altogether after better options emerged to round out the depth chart.

One of those players is Shemar Jean-Charles. To their credit, the Saints overlooked his size limitations (at 5-foot-10 and 184 pounds, he’s the lightest defensive back on their roster). He’s gotten on the field with half of the special teams units in the last two weeks, including kickoff coverage, punt coverage, and punt returns. Dantzler was limited to work with the punt returns team.

More roster moves are on the way. The Saints will have two open spots on the 53-man roster after waiving Dantzler and losing linebacker Nephi Sewell to a season-ending knee injury. They also have a vacancy on the practice squad. Stay tuned for updates as they finalize personnel for Week 18’s regular season finale with the Atlanta Falcons.

Saints promote CB Cameron Dantzler, reunite with WR Marquez Callaway

The Saints promoted CB Cameron Dantzler from their practice squad, opening a slot to reunite with WR Marquez Callaway:

The New Orleans Saints are working to account for several key injuries this week. After putting wide receiver Michael Thomas on injured reserve, the Saints signed WR Marquez Callaway to their practice squad — reuniting with the former starter who filled in for Thomas during the last three years.

But they had to open a spot on the practice squad for him. With a slot vacant on the 53-man roster and cornerback Marshon Lattimore dealing with an ankle sprain, the Saints promoted Cameron Dantzler. Dantzler appeared in two games earlier this season exclusively on special teams, but he’s an experienced pro who can help round out the depth chart.

So now the Saints have Paulson Adebo, Alontae Taylor, Isaac Yiadom and Dantzler available on the 53-man roster with Lattimore on the mend. Veteran safeties Ugo Amadi and Lonnie Johnson Jr. can also cover the slot and line up at corner in a pinch. We’ll have to wait and see what the plan is on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

With injuries mounting in the secondary, the New Orleans Saints elevated two practice squad defensive backs for Week 4’s game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Starting cornerback Paulson Adebo is out with a hamstring injury, too.

So here’s what you need to know about the guys helping to fill in for them: Johnathan Abram and Cameron Dantzler Sr.:

Eagles updated 53-man roster vs. Buccaneers: News and notes for Week 3

We’re looking at the Philadelphia #Eagles updated 53-man roster for Monday night’s Week 3 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFL rosters are always fluid, and the Eagles have had some changes ahead of Monday night’s Week 3 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In Week 2, Philadelphia moved on from punter Arryn Siposs, signing Braden Mann to the practice squad.

The Eagles will also get back three key starters and it’s another prime opportunity for Nicholas Morrow, Christian Elliss, Sydney Brown, and others to carve out a role ahead of Week 4.

With kickoff just hours away, here’s an updated 53-man roster by jersey number.

Saints elevate two experienced defensive backs from their practice squad

The Saints elevated two experienced defensive backs from their practice squad for Sunday’s game with the Packers. One of them signed with the team just three days ago:

The New Orleans Saints elevated two experienced defensive backs from their practice squad for Sunday’s game with the Green Bay Packers, per the daily NFL transactions wire. And one of them signed with the team just three days ago: cornerback Cameron Dantzler.

It makes sense to bring up more defensive backs with two starters down this week — cornerback Paulson Adebo won’t play after injuring his hamstring in practice Friday, while free safety Marcus Maye has been suspended the next three games.

Dantzler was given the nod ahead of two younger teammates who were also on the practice squad, Anthony Johnson (a rookie) and Faion Hicks (who played just 30 snaps on special teams with the Denver Broncos last year). Dantzler has played 1,792 snaps in 35 career games, so it’s clear they wanted an experienced player in that reserve role behind Marshon Lattimore, Alontae Taylor, and Isaac Yiadom. Ideally Dantzler won’t see the field. But if he has to, the coaches must trust him better than an inexperienced backup.

The other practice squad defensive back coming up this week is Johnathan Abram. Derek Carr’s old teammate with the Raiders, he’s primarily played strong safety throughout his career but could step into the secondary in a pinch. Hopefully guys like Jordan Howden, Lonnie Johnson Jr., and Ugo Amadi can hold up on the back end during Maye’s absence so that Tyrann Mathieu can continue to line up closer to the line of scrimmage, where he’s been at his best.

Saints sign cornerback Cameron Dantzler to their practice squad

NOF’s Nick Underhill reports that the Saints are signing cornerback Cameron Dantzler to their practice squad, adding some veteran depth:

Here’s some more depth in the secondary. The New Orleans Saints are signing cornerback Cameron Dantzler to their practice squad, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Dantzler participated in a group tryout in New Orleans last week but wasn’t initially signed.

He’s an interesting pickup. Dantzler is a former Minnesota Vikings third-round draft pick who has bounced around the league a bit. He joined the Houston Texans late this summer and practiced against the Saints for a few days before intercepting Jake Haener in their final preseason game, so he’s someone the coaching staff had an opportunity to evaluate closely.

We’ll have to wait and see what the corresponding roster move is to add him. Other cornerbacks on the team include Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, Alontae Taylor, and Isaac Yiadom on the 53-man roster with Anthony Johnson and Faion Hicks further down the depth chart; Dantzler could be replacing one of them on the practice squad.
