Jace Sternberger gets released by the Buffalo Bills

Jace Sternberger’s time as a Buffalo Bill has come to a conclusion as he is one of the players cut from the roster on Sunday

With the pre-season ending and the NFL moving to one cut-down day from 90 to 53, teams are starting to trim their rosters a few days early. The Buffalo Bills were one of those teams releasing three on Sunday, including former Texas A&M All-American tight end Jace Sternberger.

After bouncing around the NFL, Sternberger found a home in the USFL, where he became a star, setting a few records in the league’s young history.  He was an All-USFL TE who led the league in touchdowns (7) and helped lead the Birmingham Stallions to the 2023 USFL Championship.

He played well enough to earn a contract with the Buffalo Bills in late July after a workout. It was going to be a tough room to break into with veteran Dawson Knox and 2023 first-round draft selection Dalton Kincaid already on the roster, and unfortunately for Sternberger, his time with the Bills has ended. However, he is grateful for the opportunity and ready for what comes next.

Buffalo Bills 2023 roster cuts tracker

Stay on top of the #Bills’ roster cuts right here:

The Buffalo Bills have begans their quest to 53 players (and a practice squad). The team must be down to that to total number of players by 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

But as is often the case, the NFL is wasting little time skimming down their rosters. Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott included.

Here is Bills Wire’s 2023 roster tracker for Buffalo as the Bills work their way down to 53 players:

Former Packers TE Jace Sternberger signing with Bills

Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jace Sternberger is signing with the Buffalo Bills after revitalizing his football career with a standout season in the USFL.

Sternberger, 27, worked out for the Bills on Monday. Agent Mike McCartney confirmed the signing on Tuesday.

In Buffalo, Sternberger will join a talented tight end room that features Dawson Knox and rookie Dalton Kincaid, a first-round pick in 2023.

A third-round pick of the Packers in 2019, Sternberger caught only 12 passes over 18 games with the Packers between 2019 and 2021. He was released following a two-game suspension for violating league rules in 2021.

After departing Green Bay, Sternberger spent time at the NFL level with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Football Team and Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2023, his football career was revived when he caught 33 passes for 517 yards and a league-high (and USFL record) seven touchdowns for the USFL champion Birmingham Stallions.

Talent was never an issue for Sternberger, a dominant pass-catching force at Texas A&M. He dealt with injuries, including a concussion during his first training camp, and off-the-field issues while in Green Bay. He’ll get a chance to prove he’s still an NFL-caliber player during training camp with the Bills.

Sternberger was a teammate and top target of USFL MVP Alex McGough, who signed with the Packers before training camp.

Report: USFL star and former Aggie TE Jace Sternberger signs deal with Buffalo Bills

Former Texas A&M star tight end Jace Sternberger is getting a second shot at the NFL after signing with the Buffalo Bills.

Former Texas A&M tight end Jace Sternberger is officially getting a second shot at the NFL. After impressing in a workout with the Buffalo Bills Monday morning, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Sternberger had signed with the Bills.

The former Aggie is coming off a breakout season in the USFL, leading the league with seven touchdowns while finishing fourth in receiving yards. Sternbeger joins a competitive tight end room in Buffalo that features veteran Dawson Knox and 2023 first-round draft selection Dalton Kincaid out of Utah.

Sternberger helped lead the Birmingham Stallions to their second consecutive title, thwarting the Pittsburgh Maulers 28-12 in the championship game.

This marks Sternberger’s second go-around in the NFL after entering the league as a third-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2019. He appeared in 18 games in two seasons in Green Bay, totaling 12 receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown.

After playing his first two collegiate seasons at Kansas, Sternberger finished his college career at Texas A&M with All-SEC and consensus All-American honors in 2018. He appeared in 13 games for the Aggies, catching 48 passes for 832 yards and ten touchdowns.

Reports: Bills have workout scheduled with Jace Sternberger

Another visit for the #Bills prior to training camp’s start.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8221″]

The Buffalo Bills are bringing in tight end Jace Sternberger for a scheduled workout this upcoming week.

According to multiple reports including NFL insider Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, Sternberger will be in Buffalo on Monday.

Sternberger, 27, was a third-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2019. Green Bay took him No. 75 overall and Buffalo selected Dawson Knox that same year at No. 96 in Round 3.

In two seasons with the Packers, Sternberger appeared in 18 games and recorded 12 receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown. In 2021, Sternberger was released after serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Sternberg had stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers after he was cut, however, he never appeared in a regular season game with any of them. That led Sternberger to joining the USFL in January.

There with the Birmingham Stallions, he led the league with seven touchdowns.

With first-round rookie Dalton Kincaid alongside Knox, Sternberger would potentially be competition for Quintin Morris, the favorite to land Buffalo’s No. 3 tight end position. Like Morris, Sternberger has experience on special teams as well, appearing in 32 and 29 percent of Green Bay’s special teams snaps in his first two seasons, respectively.

Prior to the 2019 NFL draft, the Buffalo had a pre-draft visit with Sternberger.

The Bills begin 2023 training camp on Wednesday.

Former Aggie Jace Sternberger becomes USFL Champion

Former Aggie Jace Sternberger becomes USFL Champion

On July 2nd, the USFL held its championship game at the Tim Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, OH. The Birmingham Stallions entered the night looking for back-to-back championships, but the top offense in the league was up against the best defense in the league. I know they say defense wins championships, but that was not the case in this game.

The Stallions did what they have been doing all season… put up points. This time, your guy Jace did not reach the endzone, but he was still a big factor adding three catches for 65 and a staggering 21.7 average per reception.

That helped lead the Stallions to a 28-12 victory for their second consecutive title. Congrats to Jace on a wonderful season where he led the league in receiving touchdowns en route to becoming a champion. He talked about how his resurgence in the USFL would hopefully open the door for another NFL opportunity. After such a dynamic year, there is bound to be at least one or two teams looking to bring him in for a look before it’s all said and done.

We wish Jace the best of luck and are proud to see him succeeding at the next level!

Jace Sternberger helps lead the Birmingham Stallions to the USFL Championship game

Sternberger helps lead the Birmingham Stallions past the New Orleans Breakers in a blow out game

Jace Sternberger keeps adding to his touchdown total this season as he helped lead the Birmingham Stallions past the New Orleans Breakers in dominant fashion in the USFL South Division semifinal game. The Stallions jumped out to a 25-7 halftime lead en route to a 47-22 victory and advancing to the USFL Championship game.

Jace was able to cross the pylon again this season scoring from 17 yards out to put the Stallions up 9-7 early in the game. He closed out the game with three catches on five targets for 65 yards and one touchdown.

A few other notable names on the Birmingham Stallions roster are former LSU tight end Thaddeus Moss, former Arizona LB Scooby Wright, and former Oregon safety Tyree Robinson. You can watch Jace, and the Stallions take on the Pittsburg Maulers on Saturday July 1st on NBC at 8pm EST / 7pm CT.

Former Texas A&M All-American TE Jace Sternberger is finding his way in the USFL

Jace Sternberger reflects on his time at Texas A&M and his current resurgence in the USFL

Professional sports are for the elite of the elite, but it’s not always about the physical challenges; there are mental and opportunity hurdles that must be overcome as well. We hear a lot about athletes no longer being in love with the game, simply questioning if the grind is worth it in the long run, or just needing an honest shot at getting on the field to play. For Jace Sternberger, it came down to opportunity, and after a brief stint in the NFL, he is now making a name for himself in the USFL with the hopes of getting another crack at the National Football League.

He currently leads the league in receiving touchdowns (7), second in receiving average (15.7), and fourth in receiving yards (517). Sternberger has also proven throughout the season that he is the best tight end in the league, being named to the All-USFL Team offense. As a side note, former Aggie Avery Gennesy is also seeing a resurgence as he made the team.

In a recent interview with David Nuno at TexAgs, Sternberger gave fans an update on his journey where he is now and his hopes for the future. Below are a few of the highlights of that interview:

It has been a refreshing year. The USFL kind of reminds me of being in JUCO right before I went to A&M, especially with the way the season is going. I hadn’t played football for 18 or 19 months. I didn’t realize what I had until it was gone. This is a great training opportunity to get back into the NFL.

I remember all the things people said during the 18 months I wasn’t playing. I always appreciate the love and support, but some of the people reaching out now weren’t there in those months. Those months were rough times for me. It has never been a talent issue for me. It is all about the scheme and fit

For a deeper insight, visit TexAgs to listen to the entire interview. Also below are highlights from Jace’s record-setting year in the USFL.

Former Packers TE Jace Sternberger makes 2023 All-USFL team

Jace Sternberger, a 2019 third-round pick of the Packers, was named to the All-USFL team in 2023. He led the league in TD catches.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jace Sternberger was named to the 2023 All-USFL team after leading the league in touchdown catches.

Sternberger, now a member of the Birmingham Stallions, caught 33 passes for 517 yards and seven touchdowns over 10 games. He finished 12th in the league in catches, fourth in receiving yards and first in touchdown catches.

The Packers made Sternberger a third-round pick in the 2019 draft. He caught only 12 passes over 18 games and 262 total snaps in Green Bay, and a suspension for violating league policy to start his third season led to him being released in 2021.

During his first season in the USFL, Sternberger caught touchdown passes in seven of 10 games, including the first three of the season and the final four of the season. He also produced five games with 50 or more receiving yards.

Here’s the All-USFL team on offense for 2023:

Sternberger spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers after being released by the Packers but didn’t not play a regular-season snap for any of the three franchises.

It’s quite possible this productive stint in the USFL will get him another shot with an NFL team at some point in 2023. The Stallions, who won the league last season, will play the New Orleans Breakers in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday, June 25. FOX will televise. The winner will face the winner between the Pittsburgh Maulers and Michigan Panthers in the title game.

In other former Packers news, receiver Bailey Gaither finished 10th in the USFL in catches as a member of the Maulers, and running back Dexter Williams finished 18th in rushing yards for the Philadelphia Stars.

Former Packers TE Jace Sternberger currently leads USFL in receiving touchdowns

Jace Sternberger, the Packers’ 2019 third-round pick, is emerging as one of the top receiving weapons in the USFL in 2023.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jace Sternberger is enjoying a career resurgence as a standout pass-catcher for the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL.

In fact, after nine games, Sternberger leads the entire league in receiving touchdowns with six, and he’s one of only three players with at least five receiving touchdowns so far in 2023.

Overall, Sternberger ranks 10th among all USFL players with 29 catches and sixth with 433 receiving yards.

Birmingham is currently 7-2 and leading their division.

The Packers’ 2019 third-round pick started fast with touchdowns in each of his first three games in 2023 and then caught fire again recently, scoring touchdowns in each of the last three games.

Here’s one recent touchdown:

Arguably the most productive tight end in the USFL so far this season, Sternberger has multiple catches in eight of nine games, a catch of at least 20 yards in six games, and 50 or more receiving yards in four games.

Here is one of his best plays of the season:

In Week 2, Sternberger produced five catches for a season-high 127 yards and a score.

Sternberger was in Green Bay from 2019 to 2021 but failed to become an impact player, catching only 12 passes in 18 games. A suspension for violating league policy helped lead to his release in 2021. Short stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers between 2021 and 2022 did not result in any snaps during the regular season.

Talent does not appear to be an issue. He is a plus athlete with legitimate ball skills and route-running ability, and his dominance of the USFL is strong evidence that he deserves another chance on an NFL roster.

Tight end is a notoriously difficult position, especially during the transition from college to the pro game. It’s possible Sternberger has physically and mentally matured to a level where he’s now ready to take on the NFL.

Will that next opportunity come with the Packers? Unlikely, given the past history and the team’s investment in Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft in the 2023 draft. But don’t be surprised if Sternberger gets a chance to make an NFL roster at some point this summer.
