What would an NFL defense look like comprised of only Texas Longhorns?

A look at an NFL defense comprised of Texas Longhorns. Earl Thomas and Jordan Hicks were bonafide locks but who are the rest?

Some of the best defenders in the NFL hail from the University of Texas. Earl Thomas being one of the bigger names as he was recently named safety of the decade by Pro Football Focus. The lineage of defenders doesn’t begin with Thomas, but it goes all the way back to players such as Tommy Nobis, Tom Landry and more recently Casey Hampton. The series of professional teams comprised of Longhorns continues. Recently we published our list for the offense.

The focus will shift to the defensive side of the ball. After all there is that old adage of defense wins championships. Not necessarily the case in all championship teams but without one your team stands no chance of winning. Top defenders such as Brian Orakpo, Henry Melton and Roy Miller won’t make the list as they have retired from their professional careers but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty to choose from.

Let’s start with the defensive ends of our all Texas Longhorns team.

What would an NFL offense look like comprised of only Texas Longhorns?

The Texas Longhorns have produced a plethora of offensive talent over the years. So what would an offense of only Longhorns look like?

The Texas Longhorns have provided plenty of NFL talent over the years, but a large portion of that talent came during the Mack Brown era. It wasn’t just Brown that produced NFL talent, as the first Longhorn ever drafted dates all the way back to 1938 when Hugh Wolfe was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round.  Other big names include Bobby Layne, Tom Landry, Tommy Nobis, Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Vince Young and many more.

Given the amount of Longhorns that have made the jump to the NFL and AFL, we were curious what an offense of former Texas players would look like in the NFL today. We used players from the XFL as well to fill out the starters. So let’s get started with the quarterback.

Texas Lt. Governor’s idea to put fans in the stands

The Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick wrote an op-ed on Dallas Morning News about how to get fans back in the stands for sporting events.

The Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick recently wrote an op-ed for the Dallas Morning News on the topic of bringing sports back with fans in the stands. Patrick was once in the business of sports reporting, most recently at the Houston, Texas television station KHOU-TV. He left the station in 1983 and after a failed stint with a sports bar chain, Patrick returned to broadcasting as a conservative talk show host before eventually becoming the Lt. Governor of Texas.

Each fan would be limited on the number of games he or she could attend, including season ticket holders, so more fans can have the opportunity to attend a game. Fans will have their temperatures checked at the security entrances. A fan with a high temperature will not be allowed in and the ticket will be refunded. Tickets will clearly state that fans waive liability if they should become ill. – Dan Patrick’s idea on Dallas News

Patrick goes on to discuss how a computer program can determine the seating so that fans can still be socially distant while enjoying their favorite team at a ball game. Fans obviously would need to wear their masks and even suggesting some sponsors would provide them with the team logo. A great opportunity for company branding.

The idea isn’t a farfetched idea and there is a lot of positives about his idea. Even at the 30% capacity that he suggested, that would still mean 30,000 screaming fans at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturdays. It won’t make everyone happy, including the season ticket holders based on Patrick’s plan. However, it would be a way to get to watch their team at the stadium. For college sports, the atmosphere is everything.

As Dan Patrick stated, let’s end this talk about sports with no fans in the stands. The focus should be on finding ways to get fans in the stands for games without putting people at any higher risk and the Lt. Governor might have some good ideas for the major sports leagues to take a look at.

PFF ranks Samuel Cosmi second in the Big 12 at offensive tackle

Pro Football Focus released their rating for the top returning offensive tackles in 2020. Samuel Cosmi came in second in the Big 12.

This offseason Pro Football Focus (PFF) has done a tremendous job at ranking returning starters in their perspective conferences. Samuel Cosmi has been a hot topic among the NFL Draft community. Viewed by man such as ESPN’s Mel Kiper as a top 20 talent and one of the best tackles of the class. However, as PFF sees it Cosmi is the second best returner in the conference but by a narrow margin. Teven Jenkins of Oklahoma State takes the top spot.

It could be a battle between Jenkins and Cosmi for who is the second offensive tackle taken off the draft board in 2021. The top guy being Oregoon’s Penei Sewell who is being touted as a top three draft pick this early on. Cosmi is returning for his fourth season on the Forty Acres after passing up the NFL Draft in 2020.

After moving to left tackle, Cosmi has only continued to improve each and every year under offensive line coach Herb Hand. The 2020 season should be no different for the Humble, Texas. Once a three star prospect and the 135th ranked offensive tackle by 247Sports, continues to prove his doubters wrong. Why should anyone believe that he won’t continue to do so and make another big jump in 2020?
