March Madness: 2021 NBA draft prospects who improved stock in tournament

There is no stage as important for NBA draft evaluation quite like March Madness, which means we have a better idea about tons of prospects.

There is no stage as important for NBA draft evaluation quite like March Madness, which means we have a better idea about tons of prospects.

Now that the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament is all said and done, we have a better idea of whose draft stock is in a better place now than it was before the games began in mid-March.

Upperclassmen like Baylor’s Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell were already on draft boards as projected first-rounders before the postseason began. Similarly, top prospects like Gonzaga’s Jalen Suggs or USC’s Evan Mobley had big moments but that was expected for projected lottery picks.

Several others were able to make their case for why they should be picked earlier in the draft than many had previously expected.

Below are some of those prospects who shined the brightest under the big lights during the exciting stretch of March Madness that we just enjoyed.

We have also included a rough estimate of draft stock as it stands right now before the combine and interview process. Note that because all seniors are allowed to return to school for another year due to the pandemic, it is harder to predict who will be in this class than in a typical year.

Texas basketball vs. TCU: First half recap

The first half recap of the regular season finale between the No. 16 Texas Longhorns and the TCU Horned Frogs.

The No. 16 Texas Longhorns (16-7) are in the middle of their rematch against the TCU Horned Frogs and are hoping to end the regular season on a high note before the Big 12 Tournament. At the half, the Longhorns lead the Horned Frogs 33-29.

Jericho Sims leads all scores with 10 points in what has been another dominant game from him thus far. He’s shooting 100% from the field and has a block.

Sims has had to pick up the slack from Texas’ guard trio of Matt Coleman III, Courtney Ramey and Andrew Jones. The trio is a combined nine points on 30% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range.

Aside from RJ Nembhard and Mike Miles, no one else from TCU has had much of an impact on the game, as they’ve scored 16 of the 29 points.

Kai Jones and Jase Febres have given the Longhorns a much needed boost off the bench for a combined 12 points on 50% shooting, which may need to continue if the starters can’t land shots.

Scoring Leaders at the Half:

Jericho Sims: 10 points, 2 rebounds

RJ Nembhard: 9 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist

Mike Miles: 7 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist

Texas Basketball: Longhorns smother UT-Rio Grande Valley 91-55

The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team handled their business on Wednesday night. They beat UT-RGV 91-55, led by Courtney Ramey.

The Longhorns men’s basketball team got their season started against UT-Rio Grande Valley. Courtney Ramey got the scoring going early with their five points of the game. It was clear there was a talent gap between the two teams. Texas returned their entire team from a season ago with the addition of Greg Brown, more on him in a moment.

The story of the first half was the transition offense and play of Kai Jones. He led the team in the first half with 11 points and four rebounds at the half. Texas built a 45-29 lead heading into the break. Brown struggled in the first half missing all six of his shots but had two points and six rebounds at the break.

He would open the second half with a ferocious dunk.

As the game wore on, the Texas Longhorns team showed off their length and athleticism. K. Jones was able to showcase his hops with a few dunks off passes from Matt Coleman and Ramey. The Longhorns built their lead up to 81-53 late in the second half with just under five minutes to go.

Brown played much better in the second half went on, he recorded a double-double in his first collegiate game. The Longhorns expanded their lead to over 30 points in the closing minutes.

Courtney Ramey led all scorers in this game. At times looked sloppy but Texas handled an inferior opponent, which hasn’t always been the case for Shaka Smart in early nonconference play. Five Texas players would finish with double-digit scoring.

Final Stats:

Player Shooting Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks
Ramey 7-11 20 5 6 1 1
Coleman 6-10 17 1 5 1 1
Brown 2-9 11 10 0 0 0
K. Jones 6-6 14 8 0 1 0
Sims 1-3 4 10 0 1 1

Injury update ahead of Texas’ game against TCU

UT has been struggling on the court, losing four games in a row. Off the court, UT has also been in trouble, losing key players to injuries.

Texas has been struggling on the court, losing four games in a row. Off the court, the Longhorns have also been in trouble, with the injury bug hitting the team during the stretch of Big 12 play.

In Saturday’s blowout loss to Iowa State, Texas was without Jericho Sims and Jase Febres. Now with a game on the road against TCU on the horizon, it may have gotten worse for Shaka Smart’s squad.

The Longhorns may be without leading scorer Matt Coleman on Wednesday with Smart saying he is “hopeful” that he will play against TCU. Coleman has a bruised heel and has not and will not practice, just rest.

Even worse news for Texas is that leading rebounder Jericho Sims is more than likely done for the season. Dealing with a back injury, Sims suffered the injury during the Feb. 10 loss against Baylor.

Wednesday’s game against TCU will be a struggle, especially without Sims and Coleman. The Longhorns will travel to Fort Worth on Wednesday and play the Horned Frogs at 7 p.m. CST on Longhorn Network.

Texas Basketball: Jericho Sims, Kai Jones and Jase Febres to miss ISU game

The Texas Longhorns will be without Jericho Sims, Jase Febres and Kai Jones against the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday.

Life for the Texas men’s basketball team has been rough going through the thick of their conference schedule. Life didn’t get any better as they prepare for their next matchup with the Iowa State Cyclones. The Longhorns will be looking for the season series sweep on Saturday, one of their lone bright spots on this season filled with disappointments.

The Longhorns will be without Kai Jones and Jase Febres for the Cyclones game and now it looks like Jericho Sims will be out for an undetermined amount of time. The latest news came as a bit of shock as he is dealing with a back injury that could possibly keep him sidelines for the rest of the season. That was a huge blow to the Longhorns basketball team that has had their own issues on the court.

Sims currently sits 8th among Big 12 rebounders with 8.2/game. The Longhorns will now need to find production with no other Texas player in the top 20 rebounders in the conference. This likely will mean more playing time for Royce Hamm Jr who is only averaging 9.4 minutes per game. He also averages 2.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. The Longhorns could also lean on more Kamaka Hepa to play some more minutes for Texas.

The Cyclones are dealing with injury issues of their own with Tyrese Haliburton done for the year with a fractured wrist. He was averaging 15.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. The Longhorns travel to Ames, Iowa on Saturday for the final regular season matchup between these two schools.

There was no moneyline available at the time of publishing.

Against the Spread (ATS)

WEST VIRGINIA (-9, -110) opened as a double-digit favorite, but it has been bet down to single digits. Perhaps it is a little nervousness on the side of the public after the Mountaineers were just hammered by K-State. Still, they’re 5-1 ATS in the past six games overall and 4-0 ATS in the past four at home.

Texas (+9, -110) is a dismal 4-11 ATS in the past 15 games overall, and 1-5 ATS in the past six games against teams with a winning mark.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 127.5 (-106) is worth a small-unit play. The Under is 8-2 in West Virginia’s past 10 games overall, while going 4-1 in the past five for Texas.
